What a trip :) It was adventureous, fun, sad, touching and uplifting – all at the same time. A weird mixture for sure! When my husband was invited to come to the Polish IA Summit in Warsaw a couple months ago -we didn’t think long and decided that I would come along, since we both never had been too Poland. We couldn’t possibly know by then that a terrible tragic President’s Plane Crash and a Volcano Ash Cloud would overshadow our journey.

Was für ein Trip – es war abenteuerlich, witzig, traurig, berührend und erbaulich – alles zu gleichen Zeit. Eine komische Mischung, das ist sicher! Als mein Mann vor einigen Monaten zur Polnischen IA Konferenz in Warschau eingeladen wurde, haben wir nicht lange überlegt und entschieden, dass ich mitkommen würde, da wir beide noch nie in Polen waren. Wir konnten ja nicht ahnen, dass der Flugzeugabsturz der Polnischen Präsidentenmaschine und eine Vulkan-Asche-Wolke unsere Reise überschatten würde.

It started of course that I got sick the night before the flight- I say of course- because my followers know that I kind of get sick everytime before I get on vacation – don’t ask me why. So the flight was not very pleasant for me. We arrived then in our amazing Hotel right at the Pilsudski Square/Victory Square, where the streets sourrounding the hotel were already closed off. The crowd we saw on the first day was nothing in comparison of the following days we were there.

Es fing natürlich damit an, dass ich die Nacht vor dem Flug krank wurde- und ich sage natürlich, weil meine regelmäßigen Leser wissen, dass ich es schaffe immer vor einem Urlaub krank zu werden – fragt nicht warum. Der Flug war also schon nicht so angenehm. Wir kamen dann in unserem grandiosem Hotel direkt am Pilsudski Platz an, wo die Straßen rund um das Hotel bereits abgespeert waren. Die Menschenmenge am ersten Tag war noch nichts zu dem was wir in den folgenden Tagen zu sehen bekamen.

 The people were coming to pay their tribute to the plance crash victims at the Present’s Palace – lit candles and lay down flowers. The waiting line the day we arrived was 2 hours – the following days 7-9 hours. The Palace was open to the public day and night.

Die Menschen kamen um den Opfern im Präsidenten Palast die letzte Ehre zu erweisen – sie entzündeten Kerzen und legten Blumen nieder. Die Wartezeit am Tag unserer Ankunft betrug 2 Stunden – die nächsten Tage 7-9 Stunden. Der Palast war tag und nacht geöffnet.

 I loved the Old and the New Town of Warsaw. It is unbelievable that all of this was distroyed to 90 percent by NaziGermany and I was touched when I walked through the streets and realizing how much the people of Warsaw have suffered and how amazing it was that they rebuild the city the way it looked like before WWII.

Besonders die alte und die neue Stadt Warschaus haben mir gefallen. Es ist nahezu kaum unvorstellbar, dass 90 % der Stadt von Nazideutschland zerstört wurde und ich war wirklich ergriffen als ich durch die Straßen lief und realisierte, wie sehr die Menschen in Warschau gelitten haben und wie großartig es ist, dass die Bürger die Stadt teilweise wieder so aufgebaut haben, wie sie vor dem 2.Weltkrieg ausgesehen hat.

The next day I was on my own and had the absolute pleasure to meet Alejandra again- who was in my Workshops in New York City last year and moved to Warsaw – and Anna for the first time- who is an amazing stunning scrapbooker! We had so much fun that day – chatting, drinking coffee and tea, eating Pazki (a polish kind of donut :) ) and exploring the city.

Am nächsten Tag war ich “alleine” unterwegs und hatte das wunderbare Vergnügen Alejandra wiederzutreffen, die letztes Jahr noch an meinem Workshop in New York  teilnahm und nun nach Warschau gezogen ist -und ich traf Anna das erste Mal – die eine absolut grandiose Scrapbookerin ist! Wir hatten so viel Spaß an diesem Tag – quatschen, Tee- und Kaffeetrinken und Pazki – so ne Art polnische Berliner essen – und natürlich auch die Stadt erkunden.

I learned about the Volcano Ash Cloud that afternoon and we already tried to see how we would get home. In the evening we were at this really cool bar – called “Brave New World” or “Nowy Wspanialy Swiat”

 The next morning Andrea and Eric – our friends- who were supposed to fly home had to book another night at the hotel – what fortunatley worked out- since the whole city was full with people for the funeral and ceremony! Throughout the day our hosts tried to find a way to get us home. I met Anna in the morning again- which was awesome- I hope we see soon again! And then I met Alejandra again too and we went to the Warsaw Uprising Museum. It was really touching!

Am nächsten Morgen mußten schon Andrea und Eric – unsere Freunde, die eigentlich nach hause fliegen sollten, eine weitere Nacht im Hotel buchen, was glücklicherweise klappte, da ja die ganze Stadt voll mit angereisten Menschen zur Beerdigung und Zermonie war! Während des ganzen Tages versuchten unsere Gastgeber herauszufinden, wie wir nach hause kommen könnten. Ich traf wieder Anna am frühen Morgen und dann später Alejandra. Wir schauten uns das Museum des Warschauer Wiederstandes an. Es war wirklich berührend!

Meanwhile it turned out that the waiting line for tickets at the trainstation was 5 hours…and that there were no tickets anymore from Warsaw to Hamburg or Copenhagen. Then we tried to get a rental car for the four of us (me, my husband and our two friends) and that was an immediate NOOOO because they wanted to charge us 2000 EUR which is an equivalent of 2700 Dollars nowadays. When we got the word that we could get a taxi cab – driving us all the way to Hamburg- Germany – and then the remaining two from there to Copenhagen-Denmark for 600 EUR -we decided to do this – rather than staying more nights at an 5Star hotel (the only one possible at that time) and not knowing when the flight ban would ever  be lift up again. Crazy- huh?

Währenddessen stellte sich heraus, dass die Warteschlange am Ticketschalter des Bahnhofes 5Stunden ausharren mußte …und, dass es gar keine Tickets mehr von Warschau nach Hamburg oder aber Kopenhagen gab. Als versuchten wir einen Mietwagen für uns vier zu organisieren- was wir relativ schnell aufgaben, nachdem man von uns hierfür 2000 EUR haben wollte. Als wir dann hörten, dass wir ein Taxi bekommen könnten, das uns den ganzen Weg nach Hamburg und sodann unsere beiden anderen Freunde nach Kopenhagen führe- für 600 EUR – haben wir beschlossen, diesen Weg zu nehmen. Die andere Alternative wäre in dem 5Sterne Hotel zu bleiben, weil alle anderen ausgebucht waren – dort Unmengen zu zahlen und zu hoffen, dass der Flugverkehr bald wieder aufgenommen werden würde. Verrückt oder?

 So we got up at 5am the next morning – here is the view out of the hotel lobby- you can see the place where the cermony took place a couple hours later.

Also sind wir um 5 Uhr am nächsten Morgen aufgestanden -hier ist der Blick aus dem Lobbyfenster des Hotels -man kann den Platz sehen, wo die Trauerzeremonie später am Tag standfand.

We had to walk 20 minutes through closed down streets till we arrived at our HAPPY CAB – how fun is this ? We had to so much fun!!!!

We mußten 20 minuten durch abgesperrte Straßen laufen, bis wir dann bei unserem Taxi HAPPY CAB ankamen – wie witzig ist das? Wir hatten so viel Spaß!!!

After 11 hours we arrived in Germany, Eric arrived in Kopenhagen after 15 hours and Andrea made to Sweden in 20 hours- not bad :)

Nach 11 Stunden kamen wir in Deutschland an, Eric in Kopenhagen nach 15 Stunden und Andrea schaffte es nach Schweden in 20 Stunden – nicht sooo schlecht :)

It was a great journey :)
