I am not what I am …or In My Art Journal Today

NatKalbach_MyHands01

I am not what I am. I am what I do with my hands.

NatKalbach_MyHands02

I used Acrylic Paints and my Stamps and Stencils and wrote the quote with Acrylic Inks onto a piece of washi paper. I found the photo many years ago at a flea market in Germany and I always wondered about the story behind it.

NatKalbach_MyHands03

Here are some of the supplies I used:

Do old photos you see at a flea market intrigue you too?

Have a gorgeous day!

Absolutely! I have a couple of shoeboxes full and several old albums that I have picked up at flea markets and antique shows. My mom thinks it’s sad that someone’s family doesn’t want them but I like to think it’s a way of honouring them, to use their pictures in my art. I am always curious about the people in the photos and what they might have been doing when the photo was taken.

Yes they do and my son thinks it’s strange that I buy pics of people that I don’t know. He does like making up the stories with me however.

Spray Painted the background, used some Acrylic Paint. Let dry- and then placed the words over the background and sprayed over again. :) So excited you are coming to CREATE in Dallas- and yes- I will show loads of “secrets” there ;) have a gorgeous day, Laura!

Hi Tracy, I spray painted the background and used some Liquitex Soft Body Iridescent White Acrylic Paint here and there. It shows here and there and I am amazed you saw it as it is so hard to capture in a photo :)

Applause or … In my Art Journal today

NatKalbach_Applause01

If you close your eyes the rain sounds like applause.

NatKalbach_Applause02

I stenciled and stamped the background with acrylic paint. Using my Stampendous stamps and the included templates. Added a translucent yellow acrylic paint over it and then stenciled and stamped some more on top. The quote is written with a bamboo sketch pen and acrylic ink.

Here is a list of supplies :)

And remember – close your eyes when it rains…it might just sound like applause ;)

Hope We Make It All or …In my Art Journal today

Journaling says: I am not interested in competing with anyone. I hope we make it all.

NatKalbach_Hopewemakeitall02

had a good time playing with heavy body acrylic paint to get a nice background texture. Used Flexible Modeling Paste with black over my Crackle Stencil and green Spray Paint over Jessica Sporn’s Leave Stencil. Here is a list of the materials I used:

When The Why Is Clear or… In my art journal today

NatKalbach_WhenTheWhy01

When the why is clear, the how is easy. – unknown

I love this – makes so much sense in so many parts of your life :)

NatKalbach_WhenTheWhy02

Used Soft Body Acrylic Paints on the background and layered them adding gesso here and there. I also used some paint skins and applied them with Gloss Medium and Varnish – I love how they fuse into the background and yet add texture and visual interest.

NatKalbach_WhenTheWhy03

Then I just stamped the quote with the wooden alphabet stamps.

Done :)

Try to Fail or…In my Art Journal Today

NatKalbach_TryToFail01

“It’s easier to succeed if you’re trying to fail” – Philip Guston

So very true  – and something I tell my students quite often  too – if you just enjoy the process and don’t care about the outcome – the result usually rocks for you!

NatKalbach_TryToFail02

I love using some of my left over color chips on my palette – I peel it of and apply it with Gel Medium – gives texture and interesting little color fields in the art journal. Texture in the background was achieved with heavy gesso through punchinella and then I painted over and applied again a thinner layer of gesso here and there to lighten areas up.

Time is Killing You or …In my Art Journal today

NatKalbach_Time_01

Do something instead of killing time. Because time is killing you. – Paulo Coelho

NatKalbach_Time_02

I spray painted the background  in brown and blue tones and lifted off some of the paint by pressing different household items  into the wet paint getting a nice texture and pattern. I splattered some acrylic ink in white here and there and then adhered the clocks which I found in a newspaper with Gloss Medium and Varnish.

NatKalbach_Time_03

I like how the background turned out a lot – I want to use this technique more often.

Have a gorgeous day!
