Art Journal

Wear It…or ArtJournal Page

This was an art journal page I created in California last month.

NatKalbach_WearIt_01

The journaling says:
Wear it, you own it…don’t hide – time is to short to not embrace the bright things in life!

NatKalbach_WearIt_03

It actually sprung out of the feeling how hard it is as a woman to embrace success or things we are proud of to have accomplished. Usually because we fear that other people would take us as arrogant …It is the same with us when we got something cool to wear. Are you like me when you get a compliment about your clothing for example and say: “oh that thing…yeah…it was a) really cheap though b) it is soooo old though . How about we wear our success/nice clothes once in a while and say just “Thank You” and embrace it without a guilty feeling? I mean…do we really have to be a downer to ourselves all the time if there is enough people out there that keep us down? LOL- just saying ;)

NatKalbach_WearIt_02

By the way…I think my lady in my art journal really wears it- LOL- what do you think ? ;)

I especially like the lady’s shirt design. And yes, it is hard to just say thanks without an excuse about how it’s no big deal. I am famous for saying “oh this…it was on sale at (fill in the blank) like it somehow means that I don’t look good in it.

Artvergnugen at The Ink Pad in NYC – March & April

NatKalbach_ArtvergnugenAd

The new dates for Artvergnugen at The Ink Pad in New York City are up for March and April :

  • Session Three: Spray Ink Splash! – March 7th
  • Session Four: Stencil Madness! – April 25th

It starts the moment you sit down, an experience that is distinctly Art Journaling. A quick exhilaration, a sense of control, the art media’s surprising responsiveness as if they were simply an extension of you.

There is a word for this creative experience: Artvergnugen ! Artvergnugen is what makes your journal a piece of art.

Join Nathalie once a month and play each time with a different art medium or supply. Learn techniques, tips and tricks to take your art journaling further and turn it into Artvergnugen.

You will have to bring basic supplies – list on The Ink Pad Website – while Nathalie will bring the art medium/supply of the month for you to share. Sign up for as many of the sessions you want but be quick – space is limited.

Have an amazing day

Snake Bite Kit ArtJournal Page

Natkalbach_SnakeBite01

I love this color combination – it was kind of an accident but a happy one – when I was just playing with different templates and stamps of my Stampendous Stampsets while in California.

Natkalbach_SnakeBite02

It is a rare journal page of mine with lot’s of journaling but I just felt like it in that moment :) And the title? It is a sentence I used in my journaling and that I heard in Australia when I checked in into a hotel “The snake bite kit is in the kitchen, Mate – no worries” I thought that was hilarious – time to use this phrase ;)

That is the beauty of an art journal- you can do with it whatever you want- quotes, lot’s of journaling, no journaling, just a title, symbols- it is yours – no rules! It is your art journal: OWN IT!

Here are the stamps and supplies I used:

“The snake bite kit is in the kitchen”…a phrase that I’ve never heard. LOL
While working in my art journal this morning I thought to myself “who would enjoy looking at these pages?”. Kinda bummed out I realized that I loved looking at them and creating them and isn’t that who they are for. Silly me.

Photos of Artvergnugen at the InkPad

Last Friday was the first of my ongoing once a month evening class at The InkPad in New York City.

NatKalbachTIP01

Every month I teach about a special medium or supply and I bring it for an ongoing Artjournal Class. This time the theme was Stamping :) So I brought my new Stampendous Stamps and showed some techniques how you can incorporate them in your artjournal. so much fun to see them in the store and to see how people liked them :) – here you see Ana having a hard time deciding…

NatKalbachTIP02

I love the intimacy of the class- since the evening classes take in  the tiny but wonderful store (the weekend class are taking place in an out-of-store location) – there is only room for 8 students. It is a wonderful way finding out what expectations of a class exist and I loved being able to talk to each one and having them show their results and talk about it.

NatKalbachTIP03

Here is Cheiron showing her two page spread playing with different techniques – love the color combination

NatKalbachTIP04

NatKalbachTIP05

Diane playing with backgrounds and the stamps- especially love her silhouette outcome.

NatKalbachTIP06

Sandra playing with the latest Whatever Photo- love the sentiment!

NatKalbachTIP07

Robin showing her wonderful background- great base for an art journal page!

NatKalbachTIP08

NatKalbachTIP09

Ana with some beautiful color combinations and I love how she framed the second spread with the stamps – it looks so organic.

NatKalbachTIP10

Karen’s wonderful spread- I love how all fits perfectly together!

NatKalbachTIP11

Love Cheryl’s spread which totally reminds me of a Monet painting

The next session on February 20th, 2014 is about Mono printing and already full – sorry- there is a waiting list at The InkPad. If you are interested in the upcoming sessions in March and April sign up for their Newsletters so you don’t miss out to sign up.

On another note :

Scavenger Hunt Button

today is the start of fellow Stencil Girl Products Artist Jessica Sporn’s awesome Stencil Scavenger Hunt. Check it out- she posts every day this week a new design and let’s you guess which stencils by Stencil Girl Products she used.. you can win something too- so check it out ;)

Wishing you a wonderful start into the week!

Round-Robin Art Journal or…Let’s Play Together

Natkalbach_2days02

One of the fun things we did together in our Art House in California was, that we did a so called Round-Robin Art Journal. Julie, Birgit, Jenn and I  agreed to post all at the same time today and share our thoughts and experiences about this- so this is my part.

Here is a picture I already posted which is taken during the process:

NatKalbach_ArtHouse11

Each of us had their art journal and as we sat at a square table we had all of our art supplies piled up in the middle. The rules were easy. 15 minutes for each entry – a 7 minute break. Each starts in their own journal and then passes clockwise on and starts working on the next journal. You can use all art supplies on the table. In the end you will have received your journal back.

It was so fun- I will get into this in detail later- let me share the different journals and progress pictures.

JennAJ

So first this is Jenn’s art journal, you can see her start on the top left- then on the top right you see how the page looked like when Birgit was done, then was Julie’s turn and then lastly mine.

BirgitsAJ

Next up is Birgit’s journal- she passed it on to Julie and Julie passed it on to me and then on the bottom right you see Jenn’s finished entry.

julieaj

So this is Julie’s page- next was me, then Jenn and last Birgit.

NatAJ

And then this one is mine- you see I started with a busy background, and then it was Jenn’s entry, Birgit and then Julie.

Natkalbach_2days01

Besides that it was a lot of fun creating- with the added time pressure and doing it with your artsy friends – here are some thoughts during and after our collaboration:

  • gosh – I really don’t want to screw up my friend’s journal
  • Interestingly enough I was not the least worried about my own journal– I know the would create something wonderful in it.
  • I found it harder to add my own style the more advanced the pages were. See in my own sample- I started crazy with lot’s of paint and even added texture through sgraffito. I had no problem adding bigger spots and details on Julie’s page which I had second, Birgit I got a bit more hesitant but the least alas already three of my friends left marks on it was Jenn’s I had a hard time getting over destroying this page. I found this interesting – since I thought in the beginning the start in someone’s journal would be harder.
  • I love to how we all worked on what we got and just had a go. Like Jenn’s painting over half of my page calmed it down in a different way I would have done it differently.
  • I think all of us have left a signature style on the pages– you can spot all of us in the pages when you look at the end result
  • gosh – I really don’t want to screw up my friend’s journal
  • I love having a journal page all to myself where all my friends left their mark and I also love that all pages are very unique to the occasion. insider jokes, and other references that only we will get or only we will be able to laugh about- what a great memory piece this is.
  • I really liked to see the progress instantly and how things were done by the others- not waiting for it or shipping totally let the momentum going. I feel it is often lost when you do such things by mail.
  • gosh – I really don’t want to screw up my friend’s journal
  • We all wanted to do it again after we did it but the time was not there anymore- it was early morning already. We all said we should have done it earlier in our stay at the art house but I feel that it was good to wait till the end- we felt more comfortable with each other and had shared memories we could include. I feel it would have been hard to do in the beginning of our stay.

Natkalbach_2days03

I hope you found this interesting and maybe you give it a go with your friends some time – of if you did it- tell me if you could relate to some of my thoughts. Don’t forget to check out what the other three JulieBirgitJenn have to write about this.

Have an amazing day!

huge hugs

This is just the coolest project. I love your stream of consciousness…gee I really don’t want to screw up here…it seems like the end of the stay is a good time to have a go at it. And of course, there’s never another time like the first time. I so appreciate seeing this from everyone’s perspective…I can only dream of doing something like this one day. One day. What a great way to memorialize a trip!

So much fun! I actually ‘made’ my son and husband do a similar thing. My son has had a week off school and has been playing way too many video games. So I left out a whole bunch of supplies and ‘insisted’ thT he make an art journal page. When I got home from work he had a nice background finished. So I made my husband add to it, and then I finished it off. I love the results and that we all were part of it. I will have to encourage (‘make’) them do it again!

OMG, what a great idea, Nat. I have had fun doing this in the past with a gathering of friends but on a MUCH smaller scale…ATCs! Can definitely relate to some of your thoughts—I too thought starting would be harder, but soon found that I preferred it. Definitely can relate to the “don’t want to screw up” comment- ha! And I would feel that way even more if working in someone’s journal — in just 15 minutes. What a challenge, I LOVE it! Will definitely have to give this a try the next time we do a Friday night art journaling meet. Thanks for sharing :)

Thanks for showing this to us! It was really cool and fun to read/see. I especially like how worried you were about “messing” up your friends’ art journal pages – not that you were worried, but I can totally see that that’s how I’d react to an immediate round robin like that. Thanks for your honesty about that part.

I’ve done it at crops with LO’s and had the “oh crap I don’t want to ruin my friend’s page as well”. I love how it transforms that LO/page in a way that one wouldn’t get on one’s own. Thanks for sharing.

Rules Schmules or… New Art Journal Page

Are you guys also covered over the ears with stuff to do ? I bet you are. Crazzzzyyy times. At least a new Art Journal Page

NatKalbach_rules1

I was checking out a color combination in my art journal for a CHA Project – I love the blue, purple and vibrant green.

The Quote by Claude Debussy reads: Works of art make rules, rules do not make works of art!

NatKalbach_rules3

That is why I enjoy art journaling so much. Don’t get me wrong…working on CHA Projects with super-secret-not-yet-revealed-stuff is super fun…but there are also a LOT of rules. What you can use, what you can combine, what you can make, how big, how small… etc. And that is why this quote came back to my mind…so time to throw it in my art journal and move on ;) Get these projects done…oh…and CJS14…and Christmas Shopping and …Cleaning of the house… I bet you can relate :)

NatKalbach_rules2

In any event- I hope you have a couple minutes to do something creative and play! Take them :)))))

Have a wonderful weekend!

Whatevers Round 2 #6 …or Undercover Cross-Dressing

the WHATEVERS 2 A

Are you ready for the 6th photo of the Second Round of Whatevers? If you missed what the Whatevers is all about or want to see all the past photos and takes…check it out here.

Click here to see what CatVickiMartha and Cuchy made out of the photo and which story they tell.

Here is my take:

NatKalbach_EasyHide01

Journaling: Detective Henry Millera and Detective Stewart Fisher knew exactly that the more flashy they would dress the less it became obvious that they didn’t belong to the Women’s Club Fighting for Equal Rights. It was almost too easy to hide.

NatKalbach_EasyHide02

For the background I used Liquitex Paints  and also Claudine Hellmuth’s Foam Stamps .

And here is the photo of this month’s Whatever for you:

8674828378_9f599432e4_o

Here is how it works

  • Vicki, Cat, Cuchy (Carmen), Martha and I and I have made a one-year commitment to each other and picked twelve photos with Whatevers whom we will give a story.
  • Every month – if possible always on the 15th –  each of us will do a post with an individual story that goes along for us with the same photo.
  • If you want you can play along and we will have the photo for you to download and show us your version of The Whatevers. The photo will be posted at the end of our blogposts- not on Facebook!
  • There is no rules to the story itself- it can be funny, sad, uplifting, breathtaking- WHATEVER
  • There is no rules on the length or the form of the story– it can be a short sentence, an essay, a poem or a soap opera – WHATEVER
  • There is no rules on the artform you choose – it can be a scrapbook layout, an altered art project, an artjournal page – WHATEVER
  • Here is a rule though: if you take the photo you have to link back to us and show us your story.
  • These pictures are from our personal stash and are for personal use for you only! If you want to use them for a publication whether a book or magazine in print or digital form please ask for permission!
  • If you want to participate we’ll have a linky list for each Whatever Post.
  • You can also join our The Whatevers -Facebook Page

Brain vs. Kool Aid or …New Art Journal Page

4 days…no post…what??? I tell you…I am so sorry….but I am over my head in work…and hey…an upcoming housewarming party and hosting Thanksgiving this year is not helping either ;) I am working on several things at the same time…frantically and I know that some things might be totally up your alley and you will love love love them…so…BEAR with me! (Did you notice..I got it…I no longer write “bare” with me….I was so embarrassed when I learned what this means when I write it wrong- LOL). I had time for a quick art journal page – the foundation of it was made in my Class at the Ink Pad demoing.

natkalbach_koolaid1

It is always great to have some backgrounds ready to go in your art journal- so if you need a quick artfix that only takes a couple minutes- you are ready to go …

natkalbach_koolaid2

Here I also used another background page that I did and cut it up in circles which I used on the art journal page – I love it. It is one of the rare occasions where I actually have a lighter background and darker spots on top – usually I do darker backgrounds and lighten everything up with the embellishing features.

natkalbach_koolaid4

I used the Circuit Stencil I designed for StencilGirl Product and using a Versamark Pen I traced the pattern and then heat embossed with Stampendous Aged Enamel Powder.

natkalbach_koolaid3

and Mr Brain …with the dirty face (note to self: clean your fingers in between before you are fiddling in someones face!)…with a nice blue shirt to contrast the orange background ….fun
