Aussies Rule or Gesso-Marker-Letters-Tutorial

Now that’s a title- huh? LOL. I created this layout with the new Cocoa Daisy January Tea & Cupcakes Kit.

Being able to teach 18 workshops last April in Australia still makes my heart sing. It was such an amazing experience and my students were sooo fun and creative – so that is why Aussies Rule

In the kit are those black American Crafts Felt letters- which I love – but after creating a couple layouts with them I was a bit tired of the harsh black (this out of the mouth of someone who LOVES black- LOL).

So now changing up the color here with a marker is a bit challenging since a) the letters are felt – they love to act like a sponge making it hard to apply markers and b) they are black – even harder to get a color showing. There comes….GESSO to the rescue A nice primer- that has so many versatile uses from priming backgrounds, applying texture, for embellishments, manipulating photos….ah …..crazy yummy stuff

I just took off the letters I wanted to use and put them on a Craft Mat (Teflon Sheet will do too), so that you can easly peel them off later and still use them being tacky. I used a wet brush and added the gesso with a thin layer – it cover most of the black – I didn’t want it to cover all- and I was able to get some texture worked out this way. You can of course just apply a thin even unwatered down layer. Just make sure to not add it too much into the insides of the letters.

After the Gesso dried- and that goes quick – I used two different LetraSet Promarkers . First I painted the bottom with the darker green and then the top with the lighter green. Always better to have the darker color on the bottom so it doesn’t look awkward. Peel of the letters and apply them to the layout. Voila

And there you go – you have the black a bit peaking out- but it is not as harsh anymore- the colors are fitting to the mini letters I used from the kit and I added some texture that fits the workshop I taught in Australia Pretty easy and although it looks like a lot of work- it is actually not- easy peasy fast -promised!

Crafter’s Workshop Stencil Blog Hop – Numero Due

sooo thrilled to be again part of the Blog Hop for Julie Fei-Fan Balzer …I just love her wonderful release of Crafter’s Workshop’s Julie Fei-Fan Balzer Stencils. Here is my work with the featured Stencil Circles in Squares:

Glow Canvas:

Somehow the Stencil gives me an 80′s flashback- so I wanted to do something that goes with the 80s for me…colorwise and pattern wise:

I glued down some book pages to a 12 x 12 canvas, put the Circles in Squares Stencil on top and used black Gesso over it. I applied quite a lot- so it actually covered the whole stencil and not just the areas without plastic. Then I lifted the stencil and used here and there a grid tool to add some LP-like patterns to it (for those young folks like my 11 year old god son: – those vinyl round thingies you find in your parents livingroom close to the dinosaur music hifi tower – they are not frisbees…oh wait…you might not know what frisbees are either…never mind )

It is a bit hard to see in the photograph – so the first layer of the dark gesso has then the structure of the Stencil here and there included.

I waited then several hours until the Gesso was ALMOST dry – when I poked my tiny sausage fingers in and ripped the rubber like gesso here and there off. I pulled it up a bit too – so that it bend upwards and created little wholes revealing the book paper underneath. Because that is the coolest part- it dries in a way that it is not totally ruining the book paper underneath. So far as I tried it only works with the Golden Black Gesso – it is a matter of thickness and binding stuff in there

Then I sprayed some Inchworm Chalkboard over the wholes- nice neon color….pops even more on the black and goes very well with the 80s theme- LOL

Then I mixed some yellow and red acrylic paints and created a darker shade of orange and dabbed this first over the Circles in Squares Stencils, then just red and then just to get some contrast three circles in squares- with white gesso.

Some found objects…voila- done

Homedecor Canvas

Lately I have been playing on bigger Canvases – love it – giving me so much more room to play with texture…only…where to put it- LOL. The Canvas was part of an article I wrote about the Canvas Corp. Products in the Fall ScrapArtZine.

In der letzten Zeit hatte ich sehr viel Freude mit größeren Leinwänden zu spielen – ich liebe es- es gibt mir so viel mehr Raum mich mit Textur auszutoben…nur…wo passt das noch hin – LOL. Die Leinwand ist Teil eines Artikels über die Canvas Corp Produkte.

For the background I used different kinds of coarse paint media- like gesso with sand and speckeling paste. I sprayed the background with the Limited Fall Edition Glimmer Mist by Tattered Angels.

Those awesome canvas and bulap banner pieces by Canvas Corp are so fun to play with either as Homedecor times or for an album. I used a Pink Paislee Mistable Screen on top of the canvas banners. The Letters are from Tattered Angels.

For the flower I used some yummie Prima Lace and in the middle- hard to see I placed a self made denim brad. So beautiful how all those products work together

Color Connections Heritage Shadowbox

This shadowbox was created as a special assignment for CHA Summer 2011 for all the Color Connections Companies (Tattered Angels, Prima Marketing, Pink Paislee and Walnut Hollow) – It was so much fun but also scary (for example if you only have two sheets of papers or the prototype letters mnopqrst for three projects – so no testing, screwing up ) working with all the newest -by then still secret poducts by Pink Paislee and Prima Marketing.

Diese Shadowbox habe ich für einen speziellen Auftrag für CHA Sommer 2011 für all die Color Connections Firmen (Tattered Angels, Prima Marketing, Pink Paislee und Walnut Hollow) – It was so much fun- aber auch ein wenig gruselig (wenn man zum Beispiel nur zwei Papier für drei Projekte oder nur die Prototyp Buchstaben mnopqrst bekommt – also nix mit ausprobieren oder Fehlern), mit den Neuesten – jedenfalls damals noch geheimen Produkten von Pink Paislee und Prima Marketing zu arbeiten.

This is my personal favorite project out of the three I had to make. My grandaunt Margot, who I visited yesterday (miss her so much!), and her parents…my great grandparents. I love this picture and have used it before- but it is special for me and that is what counts

I used the new Pink Paislee Mistable’s Mask on the Walnut Hollow wooden Canvas- which I just turned into a Shadowbox. I love the texture with Gesso and the Tattered Angels Glimmer Glam on top and the Chalkboard – I mixed both up here. I wish you could see it in real life

Willkommen auf meinem Blog! Es gibt keinen Zweifel daran – ich liebe Stencils und ich bin total verschossen in Crafter’s Workshop Stencils und Templates – kann man ja daran sehen, dass ich sie ständig verwende und zwar auch in meinem gerade stattfindenden PanPastel Online Workshop. Es gibt auch keinen Zweifel daran, dass ich Julie Fei-Fan Balzer liebe …und daher ist die Vereinigung von allen zu Crafter’s Workshop’s Julie Fei-Fan Balzer Stencils ein Schmankerl sondergleichen. Hier ist der Stencil Triangle Plaid den wir alle bei diesem Blog Hop verwendet haben!

*Sometimes All I Want…*

I used the Stencil with several Paint Media- creating visuell and actual texture and dimension. It was lot’s of fun.

Ich habe den Stencil mit verschiedenen Farbmedien verwendet und damit visuelle und tatsächliche Textur erarbeitet. Es hat riesigen Spaß gemacht.

I also used Julie’s Clouds Stencil.

Ich habe zudem noch Julies Clouds (Wolken) Stencil verwendet.

For the Vintaj Stars I used some Patina as I found the brass color to harsh on the background.

Für die Vintaj Sterne habe ich ein wenig Patina verwendet, da ich das Metall zu krass auf dem Hintergrund fand.

Bye Bye Canvas…or let’s dress up

I love the 50′s clothing, I always loved paper dress dolls and I love creating fun collage dolls for canvases with real headshots…so I guess….no wonder I had fun to create this canvas for the inside of our main door

Ich liebe 50er Jahre Klamotten, Papierpuppenkleidung und ich liebe es auch witzige Collage-Puppen für Leinwände mit richtigen Porträtphotos zu kreieren…ich nehme also an…es ist nicht wirklich verwunderlich dass ich einen Heidenspaß hatte diese Leinwand für unsere Ausgangstür zu gestalten

My husband had first a yellow turtleneck on but he insisted on the fact that he is not a fashion victim and that he wanted to be dressed properly- LOL. Ok ok….

Mein Mann hatte ja erst ein Outfit mit einem gelben Rollkragenpulli an, aber er bestand darauf, dass er ja nun wirklich nicht so rumlaufen würde, also mußte ich ihm was anständiges anziehen – LOL. Ok ok….

Prima Workshop – Romantic Grunge – Video & Tutorials

Thank you so much for all those people that joined me yesterday during my first Live With Prima Show – we had people from all over the world – Germany, Singapore, USA, Sweden, Norway, Canada, Spain, England and so much more- it was so fun! The Chat was hilarious as you can tell when you see the recorded version.

Vielen Dank an alle, die gestern mit dabei waren bei meiner ersten Live With Prima Show – wir hatten Zuschauer aus aller Welt – Deutschland, Singapore, den USA, Schweden, Norwegen, Kanada, Spanien, England – und noch viele andere – es hat so Spaß gemacht. Der Live -Chat war zum Schießen, was man wahrscheinlich auch in der aufgenommenen Version hören kann.

I showed how you can create different versions of canvases using the same products and techniques. And besides some “accidents” in the background – like spraying into my “face” (I actually sprayed the part between my neck and my stomach – LOL), a falling canvas onto my head and a demanding cat – all went well- LOL

Ich habe gezeigt, wie man verschiedene Versionen einer Leinwand mit den gleichen Produkten und Techniken kreieren kann. Und außer ein paar Unfällen im Hintergrund – wie zum Beipiel das versehentliche Ansprühen meines “Gesichts” …na ja, ich konnte ja nicht laut rausschreien, dass ich mir in den Ausschnitt gesprüht hatte- LOL – und einer auf mein Kopf fallenden Leinwand, sowie einer rummeckernden Katze – lief es glaube ich ganz gut – LOL.

Engaged…or the anatomy of a layout

This layout was created with all the new yummie goodness by Prima Marketing for the CHA Summer Booth. I had so much fun to play with it.

Dieses Layout habe ich mit lauter wunderbaren neuen Prima Marketing Produkten für deren CHA Sommer Stand kreiert. Ich hatte riesigen Spaß damit rumzuspielen.

*Engaged*

The soft colors of the beautiful new Pixie Collection paper reminded me on the soft and tender love of my sweet grandaunt Margot and my granduncle Hans who got engaged in 1942. The photo is their official engagement photo.

Die pastelligen Farben des neuen Pixie Papiers haben mich irgendwie an die Liebe meiner Großtante Margot und meinen Großonkel Hans erinnert, die sich im Jahre 1942 verlobten. Dies ist das offizielle Verlobungsphoto.

These flowers are the new Ceylon Attic Flowers and I love the lilac and apricot ones the most – all those different little pearls inside. The umbrella was cut out and then mounted on 3D Foam Square by Scrapbook Adhesives by 3L to give it a bit more dimension.

Die Blumen sind die neuen Ceylon Attic Flowers und mir gefallen ja die lilane und die apricot-farbene am besten – mit all diesen unterschiedlich gefärbten Perlen innen drin. Der Regenschirm war aus einem anderem Papier der Kollektion ausgeschnitten und mit einem 3D Foam Square von Scrapbook Ashesives by 3L aufgeklebt, um den ganzen noch ein wenig mehr Dimension zu geben.

I stamped the background paper with some gesso over bubble wrap – you know I love this for years.

Das Papier habe ich noch mit ein wenig Gesso und Luftpolsterfolie bestempelt – ihr wisst ja- das liebe ich seit Jahren

Some of my favorites of this release must be those Resins – here the Large Window Sutters as well as the Writers Tape.

Eines meiner Favoriten der Sommer-Kollektion sind ja diese Resins (sehen aus wie Gips). Hier die Fensterläden – und auch das Writers Tape hat es mir angetan.

I stamped the Writers Tape with an older beloved Prima Clear Stamp – which has a Notestamp included and then ruffled it a bit and adhered it to the paper.

Das Writers Tape habe ich mit einem Prima Notenstempel und Sepia Archival Ink bestempelt und dann ein bischen gerafft aufgeklebt. Klebt wie Hulle.

The Window Shutter I treated with two different colors of Chalkboard Glimmer Mist and painted the window hinges with Glimmer Glaze

Die Fensterläden habe ich mit zwei verschiedenen Farben Chalkboard Glimmer Mist besprüht und die Fensterangeln mit Glimmer Glaze bemalt.

The flocking – with the “singing” and the other flocked areas you see and there on the page are from the fun new flocked rub ons by Prima. And the little crystals that you see are the cool new Say It in Crystals which come in different sizes.

Das geflockte “Singing” und andere geflockte Elemente, die Ihr auf dem Papier entdecken könnt sind von den witzigen neuen Rub Ons von Prima. Und die kleinen Kristalle – Say It In Crystals – sind jetzt so geschliffen und kommen in vielen verschiedenen Größen.

Another favorite of mine must be the new letters – those white ones you can alter in any color you want…you know I love those

Besonders liebe ich ja auch die neuen Buchstaben – die weißen kann man ja seinem Hintergrund anpassen ….und Ihr wisst ja, dass ich sowas liebe

For the window parts- which I used here as corner embellishments I used a bit more of the Glimmer Glaze – love the outcome.

Für die Oberfenster Teile- die ich als Eckenverzierung verwendet habe, habe ich ein wenig mehr von dem Glimmer Glaze verwendet – gefällt mir ganz gut.

So – I think this layout is pretty soft for me- but I added my typical edges , haven’t I?

Sodele – Ich denke, dass das ja ein …sehr sanftes Layout für meinen Stil ist – aber ich habe doch ein paar meiner typischen Ecken und Kanten hinzugefügt, oder ?;)

Let’s experiment in Nathalie’s Studio

I just got a pile of the awesome Crafter’s Workshop Templates created by Julie Fei-Fan Balzer and was going to experiment a bit in my studio anyway. And so I thought why not tape it and show you how studio day with just playing around looks like.

Ich habe gerade erst einen Stapel der grandiosen Crafter’s Workshop Templates designt von Julie Fei-Fan Balzer bekommen und hatte mir vorgenommen in meinem Studio ein wenig rumzuspielen. Und so dachte ich, wieso nicht einfach mal aufnehmen, was da so passiert, damit Ihr wisst, wie das so ausschaut.

*If You Believe You Can, You Will*

I truly believe that you cannot teach a good workshop until you know how your media react to different treatments, surfaces and materials and the only way you can find out how this works is by just experimenting. Just copying one technique that someone else showed you will not make you someone who knows how to work the media. You can still try to embrace your mistakes- but that doesn’t mean that the outcome would make a good workshop. So let me show you how I work with it and how I look at it.

Ich glaube fest daran, dass Du keinen guten Workshop unterrichten kannst, wenn Du nicht weißt, wie die unterschiedlichen Media auf unterschiedliche Anwendungen, Untergründe und Materialien reagieren. Der einzige Weg, herauszufinden, wie das funktioniert, ist indem man halt rumexperimentiert. Einfach nur eine Technik kopieren, die jemand anderes Dir gezeigt hat, macht Dich noch lange nicht zu einem Experten des Mediums. Du kannst natürlich noch immer Deine Fehler in etwas Gutes verwandeln – aber das heißt nicht, dass das Ergebnis auch ein guter Workshop wäre. Lasst mich mal zeigen, wie ich so rumexperimentiere und was ich daraus lerne.

So the next step for me would be to take the good outcomes and experiences from this and tweak it and try something different. And I will do this until I find something that speaks to me and says “that would be a cool workshop” (well at least in my opinion – LOL)

Der nächste Schritt wäre also die guten Ergebnisse aus diesem Experiment zu nehmen, sie noch ein wenig zu verändern und dann noch ein paar andere Dinge auszuprobieren. Und das mache ich solange, bis ich endlich was gefunden habe, was mich anspricht und sagt ” hey…das wäre echt ein cooler Workshop” (nun ja, wenigstens meiner Meinung nach- LOL)
