Today I’m honored to post an interview with Donna Downey.
Donna ist Trends Editor und QVC host für Simple Scrapbooks magazine. Sie ist darüberhinaus Autorin der Buch-Serie “Yes, it’s a Scrapbook”. Donna Downey unterrichtet für the Big Picture Scrapbooking in Online Classes und darüberhinaus life und in Farbe auf der ganzen Welt. Sie ist verheiratet, hat drei Kinder und lebt North Carolina.

Donna you are the Queen of altering all kind of things. Would you mind showing us your first altered item or if you don’t find it, tell us something about it? Donna, Du bist die Königin beim Bearbeiten und Umgestalten aller möglichen Dinge. Zeigst Du uns Dein erstes Stück oder wenn Du es nicht findest, erzählst Du uns was darüber?
I guess that depends what you consider altering? I think the mere act of scrapbooking is the altering of a blank page, much as an artist looks at a blank canvas and alters it into an end result we consider to be art. I alter rooms in my home all the time by changing the paint color or moving the furniture around. However the first time anyone looked at me funny for calling what I had made a scrapbook was the cd album I made in my creative albums book. It is the first project in the book and the inspiration for the book series.
Ich vermute, daß dies davon abhängt, was Du als Umgestaltung ansiehst? Ich denke der schiere Akt des Scrapbookens ist das Verändern einer Blanko-Seite, ganz so wie ein Künstler eine unbearbeitete Leinwand betrachtet und diese sodann in einer Weise bearbeitet, die wir als Kunst betrachten. Ich wandle ständig Räume bei mir zuhause um, indem ich die Farben verändere oder Möbel umstelle.
Wie auch immer, das erste Scrapbook war ein CD-Album, das ich in meinem Creative Albums Buch veröffentlicht habe. Es ist das erste Projekt in dem Buch und war die Inspiration für die Buchserie.
What draws you to altering projects? Was fasziniert Dich am meisten an der Umgestaltung von Gegenständen?
I think what draws me most to altering things is the sheer curiosity. I find myself always looking for things that have more potential than originally perceived.
Ich denke, was mich am meisten an der Umgestaltung von Dingen fasziniert, ist schlichte Neugierde. Ich ertappe mich dabei, ständig nach Dingen Ausschau zu halten, die mehr Potential haben, als ursprünglich angenommen.
You once said that coffee is your simple pleasure – did you scrap about this or other simple pleasures and if so would you show this to us? Du hast einmal gesagt, dass Kaffee Dein simples Vergnügen ist , hast Du dies einmal verscrappt oder auch vielleicht andere simple Vergnügen und wenn, würdest Du uns dies zeigen?
You know what I haven’t!! I need to do that tomorrow because the obsession goes much farther than the coffee, it is the timing and the coffee cup that makes the experience of drinking the coffee so pleasurable.thanks for the inspiration!!
Weißt Du was, habe ich nicht!! Ich muss das morgen tun, weil die Obsession viel tiefer geht als der eigentliche Kaffee, es ist das Timing und der Kaffeebecher, die das Trinken des Kaffees zu einem solchen Genuss macht.Danke für die Inspiration!!
Donna, in one entry on your blog you said “Scrapbooking is a Lifestyle” – would you explain what you mean with this? Donna, in einem Deiner Blog-Einträge sagtest Du “Scrapbooking ist ein Lebenstil“ magst Du uns erklären, was Du damit meinst?
Scrapbooking is a lifestyle and is suited to conform to everyones individual tastes. As a scrapbooker I feel that sometimes I eat, sleep and drink this passion of mine and I am sure my family would agree hee hee! If you look at your life as an opportunity for inspiration and art, the hobby just follows suit.
Scrapbooking ist ein Lebensstil und ist dazu geeignet jedermanns Geschmack zu treffen. Als ein Scrappbooker fühle ich, dass ich diese meine Leidenschaft manchmal esse, schlafe und trinke und ich bin sicher meine Familie würde dem zustimmen hehe! Wenn Du Dein Leben als Gelegenheit zur Inspiration and Kunst ansiehst, wird sich das Hobby dem einfach anpassen.
You are teaching all around the world, you have been to South Africa, The Netherlands and New Zealand and many other countries. How do you capture all those unique and most certainly influencing impressions? Du unterrichtest auf der ganzen Welt, Du warst in Süd-Afrika, den Niederlanden und Neuseeland, sowie vielen anderen Ländern. Wie bewahrst Du Dir all diese einzigartigen und ganz bestimmt auch beeinflussenden Impressionen?
You know what to be honest; I do not think I have captured them all. I have scrapbooked bits and pieces but not truly compiled the experiences anywhere. However, the best thing I have ever done was learn to keep a working journal with me while I travel. A simple journal with a small baggie of supplies is all you need to keep a daily diary of the moments, places and people who have moved you.
Weißt Du was, um ehrlich zu sein, ich glaube nicht, dass ich all dies bewahrt habe. Ich habe ein paar Teile und Stückchen davon verscrappt, aber ich habe diese Erfahrungen nicht wirklich zusammengetragen. Wie auch immer, das Beste was ich mir jemals angeeignet habe, ist, ein Arbeits-Journal mit mir mitzuführen wenn ich reise. Ein einfaches Journal mit einer kleinen Tüte gefüllt mit ein paar Materialien ist alles was Du brauchst um ein Tagebuch über die Momente, Plätze und Leute zu führen, die Dich bewegt haben.
What other materials or medias do attract the “Paper-Product-Junkie”? Welche anderen Materialen oder Medien ziehen den Papier-Produkt-Junkie an?
All of them there is no craft that I haven’t dabbled in or wanted too. I have a basket for polymer clay, paper clay, sewing, sections for stamping, bookbinding and making, metal, soldering. I am not proficient in any of them but I sure like to play!
Alle vorhandenen, es gibt kein Handwerk an dem ich mich nicht versucht habe oder zumindest versuchen wollte. Ich habe einen Korb für Polymer Ton, Papier Ton, Nähzeug, Stempel, Buchbinderei und Buchmacherei, Metall, Löten. Ich beherrsche keines dieser Kunsthandwerke in hundertprozentiger Form, aber ich liebe es herumzuspielen.
What technique is your favorite right now? Welches ist zurzeit Deine Lieblingstechnik?
Felt. Felt is getting hot and so is stitching. Right now I am into anything I can do using my sewing machine.
Filz. Filz wird ein Hit und so auch Nähen. Zurzeit fahre ich auf alles ab, wobei ich meine Nähmaschine benutzen kann.
Donna, you have a rocking newsletter. In your last one you posted a challenge to think of something to do with toilet paper tubes. A brilliant idea but how do you come to such an idea ;-)? Donna, Du hast einen genialen Newsletter. In einem Deiner letzten hast Du eine Challenge gepostet, bei der man Toilettenpapierrollen verwenden sollte. Eine grandiose Idee, aber wie kommt man auf eine solche ;-) ?

The toilet paper tubes, well change enough of them and before long your cursing them so why not find a better use for them, we all have them!

What means art for you? Was bedeutet Kunst für Dich?
Art means life. Art is a person’s view of the world and how they choose to celebrate it with others. It manifests itself in a million different forms, but it is all art.
Kunst bedeutet Leben. Kunst ist das Weltbild einer Person und zeigt, wie dieses mit anderen geteilt werden soll. Es manifestiert sich selbst in vielen verschiedenen Arten, aber dies ist alles Kunst.
You have three kids, a wonderful husband, a house that needs some work from time to time and a very busy job including traveling a lot. How do you find time to be still creative and what do you do when you lost your MOJO? Du hast drei Kinder, einen wundervollen Mann, ein Haus, das ab und zu ein wenig Arbeit braucht und einen sehr anstrengenden Job, bei dem Du auch viel reisen musst. Wie findest Du die Zeit immer noch kreativ zu sein?
I have no idea, but if I did I would bottle it.
I think it is because my husband is a saint and 110% supportive of me. We work well together.
Ich habe keine Ahnung, aber wenn ich sie hätte, würde ich mein Ergebnis in Flaschen abfüllen lassen. Ich denke, es liegt daran, dass mein Mann ein Heiliger ist und mich zu 110 % unterstützt. Wir arbeiten sehr gut zusammen.

Just thank you and I am so flattered and honored to be asked my thoughts. I did my student teaching in Germany; I lived in Trippstadt for 3 months and have a special place in my heart for the country.
