Icy fun on the Alster

We have this nice river Alster – besides the river Elbe – which is dammed in the city center and form two huge artificial lakes there. It adds a lot of beauty to our city- and once in a while in winter it freezes.

It freezes so much that you can walk on it – …kind of like..it could be safe enough to walk on it- we won’t kill you if you do so but we also might not save you if you do so. This happened last 2 years ago and is in itself rare.

But then…..VERY VERY RARELY it freezes so that the city of Hamburg officially says – ok…you can go on it on your risk (yes….there is a difference to former said ;) ) and we will safe you when you break in AND – you can even have a little party called “Alstervergnügen” on the “Lake”.

This happend last in 1997 – so 15 years ago.

So all Hamburgers (stop laughing – that is what we are called) LOOOOVEEE when this happens.

They say about 700000 people visited the ice this weekend -and we were two of them :)

You know what an outdoor party in the winter means in Germany right?

Sausage Booths (well- that is also a given thing in summer ;) and mulled wine. That is pretty much it – and yet it is so much fun.

I had no ice skates – at the last move 5 years I decided the Alster might never ever freeze again…oh well ;)

BTW – it took about 1 hour till we – totally bundled up were freezing in the ice cold wind on the alster- so we headed home and Kitty was like…PAH – “why on earth would you leave cozy warm house anyway???” ;)

And so the rest of the day we worked drinking hot tea and having the heater go bonkers :)

What is your favorite local winter thing to do ? Ice Skating, skiing?

And a few words in English: I spent half a year in California, between August ’92 and January ’93. It actually snowed that year and everyone said it was because the German girl had brought it over ;)

Ich halt’s da eher wie Deine (und auch meine) Katze…

I live in California. People wear wet suits and go surfing not far from where I live right now. The storms way up in Alaska help create waves that surfers like. Instead of real cold we pray for rain to fill our reservoirs for our next summer drought. We can pretty much expect a period of no rainfall of 6 months in a row.

that is really crazy. When I was in California before CHA it rained and I heard that it hadn’t rained for a long time. I guess we brought it over- because here in Hamburg it rains a LOT .

Folks around here go skiing, snowboarding, ice fishing (really smoke cigars and drink beverages that have alcohol in them), go sledding and my favorite is to sit inside with a good book and a hot cocoa or chai:-)

(not much snow this year so we have to go north of us to do any of these things…except mine)

What a fun event! Pretty spectacular when it happens with so many years in between. I love your phone photo with your location in the water–Funny! Hmm, my favorite local thing to do in winter…I will tie it to the holidays…I like to drive around with a hot chocolate and look at all the Christmas lights while listening to Christmas CD’s. Then, like Dottie and the kitty, I like to snuggle at home with some soup, a movie, and some crocheting. :)

If you have troubles watching this video in this format – you can also see it here: ( I will always provide two options :) )

[youtube=https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wz03eO_S0lg]

I would love to share you some home*art that some of my students created for the class:

Cuchy aka Carmen Sanchez:

I love how the texture draws you into the page- amazing !

Eeva

I love how Eeva used this sweet photocopy of a photo of her baby to do the painting. I love that nobody can see she used a photo- awesome!

I love the background and then Mia’s awesome tissue paper heart and the flower. What a great mixture of all those techniques we used in lesson 1!

 Rebecca:

I love how Rebecca took all the techniques a step further for example on using a straw or sanding the metal after spraying it. That she used a soda can metal is rocking cool!!!

Riikka

These are gorgeous pages by Riikka- I love the weaving of page three and the amazing colors and texture of the first two ones- wonderful!
Ana:
I love the free approach to both of the pages and the awesome edge on the second. How fun that her son did those together with her – this rocks!

Hello from France! Thanks a lot for this tutorial. This little notebook is so versatile. I love the tip about gesso and pan pastel. And the great thing about your tutorial is the video is so good even those who don’t understand English can do this project. So I’ll pass it on to my non-English-speaking friends.

CHA Designer Giving Tree Ornament

The CHA theme this year was The Power of Community. Some wonderful Charities were doing all kinds of activities during the show. The Designer Members were given the opportunity to create an ornament for one of the charities of their choice and it hang in one of those Community Parks from a tree and was later auctioned off.

I chose to create my ornament for Crafting for a Cure – which “is  a not-for-profit registered charity that looks for opportunities to insure children are having a positive experience when a hospital visit is necessary.”

Having spent a lot of time of my childhood in hospitals – something that I for sure never mentioned and also almost never talk about- this charity rings a personal string in me and I love the thought behind this charity.

Being in the hospital as a kid is scary. You do not understand everything that happens whether it be the things that are happening with you or around you.

I remember one of the times I was in the hospital – I had an operation the next day and I was 6 or 7 and the night before the operation I was brought to this special room – I actually still don’t know why they did this- but they brought me and another boy there because we had our operation the next day and it had something to do with getting us ready easier the next morning or so. So anyway- we both were lying in bed the whole night scared about our upcoming operation and talked. I’m sure it just felt for us as if it was the whole night and it was only a couple of hours- but anyway we talked about our fear of the operation.

The boy was getting a heart operation. When we were rolled out to the elevator the next morning to get to OP we actually said bye-bye and promised to visit each other later. A couple of days after my operation I asked my mother to find out where the boy was – so I could visit him. She came back and had to tell me the boy did not make it.

Still to this day I don’t like hospitals. I have a hard time visiting hospitals. You must be a really good friend or family member that I actually do visit you. I will have all kinds of excuses why I can’t make it. The smell, the look, the atmosphere – everything reminds me of those times back then. And once in a while- not often- but once in a while I think about the little boy with whom I had spent a scary night in the hospital and who I never  even asked about his name, because all that mattered for us was our fear.

Thank you Crafting for a Cure for doing such an amazing work! I hope my little ornament helped a lot towards your cause!

Also thank you to Candice Windham for organizing this  for CHA – what a wonderful idea!

hugs

Nat

    Hallo Nathalie,

Hi Nat! I adore these gorgeous pieces…such beautiful colors, layers, and textures!

My sister was diagnosed with Crohn’s Disease at age 16, and she also spent lots of time in the hospital, as doctors performed surgeries to remove/repair damaged intestines and tried to get her condition under control. I can certainly relate to what you’ve described here. So important for kids in these kinds of circumstances to feel there are others out there who’ve had similar experiences!

Saying good bye as a Tattered Angels Golden Ambassador

Yesterday was my last day as a Golden Ambassador for Tattered Angels.

The past four years I had a wonderful time filling several roles for the company, sometimes at the same time with being on the Design Team, being the Design Team Coordinator, being an Educator and being a Golden Ambassador of Tattered Angels. Last year alone I taught over 50 Tattered Angels Workshops – pretty crazy number, huh?  ;).  With the transition of Tattered Angels to Canvas Corp. the decision was made to close the Golden Ambassador Programme. Although this is a sad moment as a wonderful time ends, it also makes me happy as I know it frees me for the awesome things that are coming up in my creative life…it is all good and I’m giddy at the same time because I know this is going to be a rockin’ year :)

I will still work with Tattered Angels products and I will continue teaching the already scheduled workshops for the next months, so don’t you worry – we will mist away :)

I would love to show you my favorite work that I have done for Tattered Angels the last 4 years as a way to say good bye and close this capital for now

And this is only a SMALL fraction of my projects – but I think those are my faves of all of them in all the years. Looking at those projects puts a smile on my face because I had a great time while creating them- and that is what it is about for me: the creating process and the memories that go along with it and the photos I use. Nobody can take that away from me :)

Thank you Wendy and Tattered Angels for your trust in my work all those years and giving me the chance to work with you. You have been the reason for where I stand and who I am right now as me regarding my professional life. It has been a fun ride. I have learned a huge amount of things from being on the teams whether it about how I love to create, teaching or about the industry itself. Thanks for letting me be myself in my art projects.

I hope you enjoyed my little TA-Gallery post :)

Have a wonderful day

Nat

Epic Post about CHA Winter 2012 and a Secret Revealed

≈Back Pipes signaling the beginning of the show≈

I cannot even tell you how awesome this CHA has been! This was my third time and I did a lot of things different this time. The first time I went and had no idea what to expect, was totally overwhelmed and had the feeling I did everything wrong. The second time I went and worked the whole time, saw almost nothing of the floor and was totally overwhelmed and had the feeling I did everything wrong. And this time?

I went – and totally loved every single minute- had the feeling I saw everything, enjoyed everything and made the most of everything :) This was the best and most uplifting inspiring CHA yet.

I guess I should blurt it right out because to be quite honest, I have no idea how I was able to keep this secret so long- LOL ….Eco Green Crafts and I partnered and they released a Stamp Plate of mine this CHA – Texture stamps- here is a product Mock up. I’m sooo thrilled about it since Eco Green Craft is a company I do love for a couple of years now – I love their products and I love the concept behind it- it is dear to my heart. So this is a huge honor for me. See my logo? I was almost wetting my pants when I saw it – sorry- but hey- that is just honest – LOL

But also my amazing friend Julie Fei Fan Balzer has some stamps coming out with Eco Green Crafts and here is what she had to say about them and you will get a short glimpse of mine too – thank you Julie for shouting this out :)

[youtube=https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=Efz6D35rlRo]

The new Artist Spackle by Eco Green Crafts is AMAZING- I’m sooo in Love with it- watch out for texture galore the next months till this baby bucket is empty – LOL

I was filmed too by Scraptime in Canada and will post it when it is up too :) Probably made a fool of myself ;) (Photo stolen from Birgit)

Here with Susan of Eco Green Crafts and Vanessa from Stampington

– My favorite was sharing lot’s of time with my friends!!

≈Ted & Jaime of The Crafter’s Workshop and I celebrated Julie’s birthday on friday together – picture stolen from the Birthday girl – Julie Fei Fan Balzer :) – We had an awesome evening together ≈

On set up day I visited many seminars and cruised through the lines of booths to deliver my projects. Here are Sharon and me doing the Creative Jump Start “Let’s Jump” – I ‘m still giggling when I see the picture- LOL. Sharon already landed again- while still yelling “Let’s jUmp” Hilarious blurry picture.

Here is Drew Scott– amazingly talented teenager! Watch out for him ! Thank you Drew for all your help during my Make ‘N Takes- you rock!

Sunday and monday I did my Make ‘N Takes at the Prima booth-picture stolen from Louise – don’t kill me girl- you are still traveling- LOL !!! I will post the tutorial for the Make and Take later this week.

I spent lots of time with my adorable friend and room-mate Birgit Koopsen – she looks too cute in this Prima hat. Birgit has helped me a lot with my Showcase- you rock girl – and oh well- what can I say- she is the best! Oh wait it was Julie…oh wait it is both of them- LOL – or maybe it is Cat….mmmhh

my amazing friend cat-herine Scanlon who also helped me big time setting up the show case!!! Miss you already girl!

It was so fun to see Anna again – here we are with Pom :) and see- Jaime is in the background – love that girl!

Here is Donna- we spent a fun evening together – hehehe :)

But of course I was not ONLY chatting there ;) I actually did also see products- but honestly I did not take too many photos and was too lazy to get the big camera out- so those pictures are all of poor quality taken with my cell phone camera

The big secret is out – Tattered Angels was not only acquired by Canvas Corp – no, they also released their new product Line Plain Jane. It contains – Simply Sheer, Baseboard and Stained Glass. Basically it  is the four paint products they had before (Glam and Glaze are as one) without the Glimmer. Nice! I had fun playing with it before CHA and doing some projects for the booth.

Heidi Swapp was one of my first stops. She releasied her new Signature line – and I love love love it! And I love her! Heidi Swapp just made me REALLY happy this CHA – and she knows ;)

The memory filed folders were my absolute highlight with them and here is s a little sneak of a project I did with them- can’t show you all yet

I love Heidi’s Ribbon – it has a plastic like surface- but still is like fabric- but the cool thing is that actually Tape Runners stick to it – unlike to fabric and that if you heat it starts fringing- totally cool!

As always I also loved the Pink Paislee collection and fell totally in Love with those tags- tags are the rage anyway- but boy do I love THOSE tags!

And as always Pink Paislee had a cute decoration :)

I loved this line by Jilli Bean- terrible photo I know- but the second grey picture is actually from an old phone book – sooo awesome.

Ronda Palazzari, Birgit and i spent one morning together and had lot’s of fun using the Jilli Bean Booth for some mischief ;)

I cannot wait till Ronda comes out with her book

And here are Ronda and Birgit playing with the gesso I told them about by Deco Art

The Gesso is nice and thick and highly pigmented and smooth- loved it. Thanks to the amazing Bethany Kartchner for enabling me with her amazing inspiring Make ‘N Take!

Oh and look  – I also ran into the fabulous girls Tina and Mireia from Scrapbook Werkstatt– hehehe- they are too funny! oh brother I look quite stupid in this picture- but oh well- out with it ;)

here are my two aussies that brought me lots of yummie and sweet presents – Louise Nelson and Sherry Mendoza!

The amazing Jen Cushman at the Designer Roundtable- who later on won the New Horizon Plaid Award- so cool and so well deserved! She is awesome

Julie Fei Fan Balzer with her awesome apron and logo “I’m a Dirty Girl” I loved seeing all those people wearing this sticker through CHA – and ….This woman is THE HIT. I saw her talking in front of 100s of people- and boy does she have presence! If you have the chance to take a class with her – TAKE IT!!!!! She is funny, knows so much and knows how to engage people and teach them lot’s of things! I was trying to rub my should on her to get some of her talent off but she was calling me Dirty Girl ;)

And of course I had to visit Allison – Hambly has always been one of my favorite companies!

Look at this mistable paper- yummie!

And here is Dyan – loved chatting with this girl – she is fun and we share a love for vintage dresses- hehehe- I think her son got really scared when I told her where she should go in L.A. LOL – Next year we have a shopping date- huh? LOL

Her stencils with Crafter’s Workshop are awesome too!

and of course her artwork too

Oh and speaking of Ranger’s – here is Terry- looooooveeee her!!!

oh and look who I bumped into – Elina from Greece. Finally I was able to congratulate her to the wedding personally :)

oh and look who I also met- Emily Pitts from Cocoa Daisy :)

Some highlights have no picture- dinner with Christine from Cocoa Daisy with Ronda and Birgit and Julie – and some other times – but sometimes the memory is just as good as a dark blurry picture :)

I have so many more pictures also of booths- but I think I have to stop now- cause this is pretty epic already- you are probably already bored….snore…or are gone already ;) I will show you some pictures of my designer show case in a different post too :)

Wishing you an amazing day

Nat

Back in Time, Joshua Tree National Park and how to enjoy life

Let me show you the second part of my California vacation before I finally show you tomorrow some CHA pictures ;)

When we came out of the Death Valley National Park – and I repeat again- every corner looks the different – after a couple miles ;) – we saw this cool cloud formation – doesn’t that look like a person? I thought it was sooo cool!

We did a little detour onto Route 66 on our way to Joshua Tree National Park and btw- we just recounted and that was number 16 of visited National Parks in the US – wowser. I also counted again and figured I visited so far 34 States in the U.S. – I think now I really wanna visit all States in my life :)

So on Route 66 you can find some treasures like this – The Road Runner’s Retreat

And while we were standing there, wondering when the Road Runner’s Retreat might have been the up and running place a car stopped and a  guy talked to us. He said he saw the car from far away and thought we were the owner and that he actually was looking for the owner because someone wanted to use this as a photo set (I can see that ;) ) . We asked then when this was left and he said in the 60s. Fun – I wish I could see a picture of how this place looked back then.

A couple of miles later you find this gem in Amboy

That was the coolest place ever- I tell you something, If we had had more time- I would have gotten into my suitcase to take out my vintage 50s dresses for a photo shoot. Sooo cool. The owner actually bought the whole place not too many years ago and found the whole furniture / registration area still intact and he preserves it very well.

Can you tell I’m excited about this place?

So finally Hubs was able to drag me away and we arrived in 29Palms next to the Joshua Tree National Park…and ohhhh my…another preserved place build in 20s where stayed. We had a nice cute little Adobe house to ourself- the furniture and bathroom almost all orignal furnished- which some people were writing negative reviews about- but oh gosh I loved looking into this chipper old mirror and brushing my teeth over this old worn out sink.

I also loved the swimming pool area – and the reception- original too – maybe the swimming pool a bit later. We spent some nice time there

We spent two days in the park- hiking and checking it out- it was sooo cool! we also saw a coyote pretty close while sitting in the car and chatting – but oh that hurts- I did a nice shot of its face looking directly at me  and then ….accidentally deleted the picture- I’m still crying! Here is the one I didn’t delete- can you see it?

I love those Joshua tree- every single one looks different and it was really a view I didn’t get tired off. There is something magical about those trees!

Different sorts of cacti

And some came with a warning sign to not get too close! – You bet I didn’t – LOL – cause I’m already afraid of needles and I’m a sissy if it comes to being injured by stuff like that.

And then it was time to make our way to Los Angeles- Anaheim where we met a cousin for an awesome lunch and hubs waived good bye to me. so as promised CHA pictures tomorrow :)

What a fun adventure! Love the pictures–it is amazing the bits of history that survive. Your husband is from New Jersey, I think you’ve mentioned? I’d love to hear your love story, how you met, how you handled the compromises of trans-continental roots. :)

Graffiti, Ghost Towns and Gazillion other photos

What a blast! It is no secret that I truly love California- the more as a couple of really dear friends live in and close to San Francisco. It was a bit crazy doing this tour before CHA – but it was WELL worth it :)

We had some fun shopping and strolling through different neighborhoods

dreaming of living there and taking photos of street art. One day we will be there…or in New York…or not- LOL

Love those fishies and the black, white and orange colors

and hanging out with friends

Then we headed to San Jose where I taught 3 classes at the Scrapbook Island. Such an awesome store and an extra huge classroom. I loved it and had a great time. Here are some girls :) It was wonderful seeing Emi, Erin and Christine then later again at CHA – I missed Laurie there though.

A special thanks goes out to the Scrapbook Island staff who did a tremendous job helping me before and during the classes and also to Christine Delgadillo – who is not only an extraordinary teacher but also a wonderful helper!! Thank you girls!

I was turned into a 49er fan this day- and was telling all I like that Smith guy in the team (they have three of them- LOL). I’m not sure my hubs is happy about it…he is a Giant’s fan ;)

We went to the Death Valley National Park – and it rained -which blew my mind- LOL -but it was somehow fun to see. I mean- it never crossed my mind that it could actually RAIN in the desert but of course, dummie!

Amazing landscape – Artist Drive with different colored rocks- I think this was my favorite of the Death Valley National Park.

Badwater – stunning! And somehow the bad weather made for some really beautiful sceneries.

We drove a lot and sometimes….to fast….AHEM – here in Germany we have radar and you get a “nice” picture in your mail and a message with the ticket about your speeding. I only knew the cops get out the car thing from American Movies – my husband found it quite funny that I was so excited about this – he hadn’t had a speeding ticket since we live in Germany- all I say is AUTOBAHN – I guess he got spoiled. Well – it was a pretty expensive excitement and for the rest of the trip we behaved!

Ghost towns – pretty cool. It is so surreal – having those buildings in the middle of nowhere.

Loved those sand dunes at the Death Valley

It always baffles me in America when you are at a place like this and every couple of miles everything looks totally different.

Are you still here? Well…hang in there…LOL – more photos from my trip tomorrow- and yes – CHA photos are coming too – but those are coming last ….I like it in order…hey- I’m a Kraut ;)

So insecure about this workshop… I am doing the Gesso-workshop. You are using Pan Pastel there as well… So, will I have any use for the pan pastel-workshop as well??? They are pretty expensive, so I wanna be sure before I choose to sign up…

I do not quite understand your question. sorry- if you mean of you need PanPastel -yes. It is a PanPastel workshop. As far as PanPastel in the Gesso workshop that was just one out of many many possibilties and doesn’t mean you have to have it.

        That’s not exactly what I ment… I have Pan Pastel :)
I’m just so in doubt about taking the workshop or not…. Will there be many different techniques than the one you showed in the Gesso class?

Is your question if the techniques in this workshop are different from the ones in the Gesso class? Then the answer is YES- absolutely. If not – I still don’t get it- sorry- I have a blonde moment ;)

Maybe my English is rusty…. hehe.. Since I’m Norwegian :P
But, I’m kind of asking myself if I need both classes…..?! Since I already have the gesso-class…. I’m kind of going back and forth about the money… ;)
