Celine is 25 years old and lives in Montpellier, France. She has been published in several issues of Legacy, Somerset Studio, Scrapbook Answers, in the book New Directions in Altered Books,A Somerset Home and the ATC book by Stampington. She also teaches art classes in France and in the States. Furthermore Celine is member of the Design Teams for Rouge de Garance, Lazar Studio Werx, Scrapbook Answers,Paperbag Studios and Paper Artsy.

How long do you work with Mixed Media and what made you start? When did your interest in scrapbooking start?

I’ve been in the Mixed Media world for about 8 years now. When I was 16, I used to have lots of penpals in the UK and the US, to improve my english, and some of them used to send me beautiful handmade cards, then we exchanged handmade collages, and one pal from the US introduced me to ATC’s. I had No internet connection at home at that time but the day we got it, I simply searched for ATC’s and Altered books and OH MY! It was a whole new world that opened to me! Like if I had discovered a new planet with likeminded persons! It was a shock but oh how it was soooo cool to know that I wasn’t doing that all alone in my side of the world! And then, everything went fast : I joined some yahoo groups, met new friends, got involved in swaps and round robins and here I am! Mixed Media became a passion, a lifestyle, a way to express myself truly, the way I wanted it to be. And now it’s my full time job!
Concerning scrapbooking, that is another story ! :) I’ve only been scrapbooking since MARCH! In fact, my friend Karine Cazenave-Tapie asked me whether I’d like to teach classes at a crop in Southern France. I was thrilled and said yes! I taught an art journal class that was pretty interesting. But I had to participate in the challenge and make a 12×12 layout ! Oh my! I had never done that before! I have to admit that my layout sucked. LOL but then, I joined the Rouge de Garance DT and their papers really inspired me and got me doing more and more 12×12 layouts. Scrapbooking helps me celebrate life, the ones I love, the ones I lost, the ones I cherish and discover new parts of myself as well.

A like Artist

You quit your job to go being a full time artist in June – how did this change your life and how does it work?

I changed my life in a way I would have never expected !!! I thought it would be easier to organize myself during the week. I used to have a part time job and it was getting hard to handle my real job and my art career.I had no time to create and do all the things I wanted to do. So I quit. And thought I would have way more time to create! Which is false as I realize I get involved in more and more things here in France and in the US ! But it is SO cool ! It’s my dream come true! I mean,I would have never thought I would do that as a living! Now I teach classes nationnally and internationally (I used to teach in Quebec too when I lived there), I am involved in collaborative projects with incredible artists, I create whenever I want to ! It’s wonderful ! I don’t care whether I only sleep 4 hours a night, as long as I wake up in the morning and tell myself “yay…one more day of ART!” I only wished a day could be 48 hours long instead of 24! :)
My day usually starts at 8.30am-9am…even if I have to admit I can wake up at 10 too! LOL after a shower and a cup of coffee, I check my emails, work on things that need to be done on the computer (schedule, photoshop etc…) and try to organize myself about what I need to do during the day. After lunch, I create from 2pm to 8pm…and sometimes even during the evenings and NIGHTS! I love it! I don’t regret one second leaving my job for my life now : it’s priceless! Freedome is priceless!

Also habe ich gekündigt.

What are your favorite medias to use in your artwork? Welche Medien benutzt Du für Deine Kunstwerke am liebsten?

I have a love for acrylic paints. All colors. All textures. My favorite are Golden acrylics and Golden Fluid Acrylics. Can’t get enough of them! I also love papers so much… And fabric… What I really like is to mix everything all together to create one single piece of work. That is mixed media my friend! :)

What is your favorite Technique right now?  Welche Technik bevorzugst Du zur Zeit?

I don’t have any favorite techniques. I just like to go and do something. I usually don’t plan on doing anything in particular.I don’t plan doing this or that technique either. I just go and see where my creativity leads me.

Do you think that the development of Freestyle in the Scrapbooking world is actually just a way to include Mixed Media art in Scrapbooking?

EXACTLY! I personnally think that, sometimes, Scrapbooking has too many rules, you know (follow this or that sketch, use that paper this way…) and people need to create on their own. Mixed Media and the Scrapbooking “Freestyle” way of creating really help break the rules a bit and give more freedom. Of course we can scrapbook by using paints, found objects and junk stuff ! I really hope that, someday, Mixed Media and Scrapbooking will create a brand new STYLE! That would be cool ! I can see artists like Emily Falconbridge, Ashley Calder and more that really break the rules and I can’t thank them enough for that ! :)

GANZ GENAU! :-)

So, what makes you scrapbook?  So, was läßt Dich scrappen?

Everything inspires me to scrapbook ! A photograph, a friend, a landscape, an ad, a song, a book, a quote, a TV show (No, not a TV show, I rarely watch TV)… I am a photographer from the beginning and I like all kind of photographies. A picture can inspire me to create. A combo of color can inspire me to create. A bunch of new papers can make me want to scrapbook ! As long as I’m inspired, I just go for it !:)

What is the difference between art and scrapbooking for you?

There’s no difference for me between the two : as long as you decide it is priceless, that it comes from the bottom of your heart, from inside your brain and soul, that you can say whether you like the piece or not, to me, IT IS ART. I remember ,when I used to study Marcel Duchamp‘s art in my Photography school, a sentence he said :”It is ART as long as you decide it is ART”. My Mixed Media pieces are ART. My scrapbook pages are ART. And if I am the only one to like it, I don’t mind : I enjoy doing it ! :)

In one entry on your blog you wrote you need to handle the time between Scrapbooking and Mixed Media – how and why? ;-)

I tend to do too many things at a time and I don’t want to feel lost. I love Mixed Media and I love Scrapbooking. But I need to find a good balance between them two in order to stay focused on the important projects I have going on. I cannot be everywhere or do all the things I wanna do ! I wanna learn how to design websites, I wanna study Spanish again, I wanna buy an old house and decorate it…I can’t do all these for now. It’s the same for MM and Scrapbooking. I just need to stay focused on all the important things going on and make choices.

What are the techniques you usually use for your altered art or mixed media art that you now use for scrapbooking the most? Welche Techniken, die Du normalerweise fü¼r Mixed Media Art benutzt, wendest Du nun oft beim Scrapbooking an?

I really like to use transparencie pictures, play with paints, textures, make collages but with my own photographs, I like doolding, I like drawing, stamping !

What do you like the most about scrapbooking?  Was gefällt Dir am besten am Scrapbooking?

I like the fact that I can celebrate life and my loved ones’ lifes through Art. I like to talk about tiny details, funny stories, my own thoughts, dreams, hopes, wishes for life in general. Just like in my art journal in fact.

My Mini Art Journal

Why is art or creativity important to both to you and to society as a whole?

I wouldn’t be the same without Art today. Art has been helping me in soooo many ways. When my sister was fighting against cancer, it was my one and only way to express my sadness, my anger, all the feelings I had inside. I now encourage everyone I know to simply write or draw or collage anything : it helps you feel better and makes you say something that you cannot do with your own voice. I’m not really someone that talks about her own feelings easily but Art is my voice for that.

What would you like to add?  Gibt es etwas, was Du hinzufügen möchtest?

I would just like to say that there is NO limits to ART : do whatever comes to your mind, feel free to create whenever you want to! Art is a cure to happiness! :)

Thank you Nathalie! I really enjoyed this little interview! It was fun! :)

Danke Nathalie! Ich habe dieses Interview wirklich genossen! Es hat Spass gemacht! :-)

Thanks a lot Celine for this wonderful and cordial interview!
