Description

An original mixed media painting by Nathalie Kalbach, signed in the lower right.

“Gritty” is an original painting made with acrylic paint, acrylic ink, graphite, markers, gesso, and spray paint on canvas.

“Gritty” is a painted montage of buildings in my Jersey City neighborhood. I’m exploring the dual meaning of “gritty”, and celebrating both in this piece. While it could refer to a physical state of containing or being covered with grit, it also describes a character of courage and resolve. Both of these play an important role in my work, and in this painting are used to capture scenes in my environment that are beautiful, filled with history, prone to decay, sometimes overlooked, and in constant flux.

The layered background creates a dreamlike atmosphere and buildings appear out of the mist like snapshots in my mind. Certain details are clear and present while others fade out of focus – a memory of a time and place that may or may not still exist as imagined. Rough textures and expressive linework are balanced by alluring colors, suggesting that the story behind these scenes includes both past struggles and optimism for the future.
