“Winter Village” is an original painting in acrylic paint, ink, and marker on canvas. Nathalie was inspired by the Italian Village neighborhood in Jersey City for this seasonal scene. This historic area still retains some businesses and families that have been here since the neighborhood’s heyday way back when. As with most of Jersey City, the Italian Village has in recent years seen an influx of new residents and the ever present forces of gentrification. Here she captures a street scene with one of the new mural paintings that have become ubiquitous in all of the city and indicate both a resurgence of love and energy for the area but also signal dramatic changes underway for many of the original residents. Just as wintry weather sweeps through the streets, so does the evolution of the old cities. Nathalie represents this contrast with brilliantly rendered buildings alongside the wistful sweeping brushstrokes of winter weather.
