Stroll Through The Hood

Stroll Through the Hood – August 2016

NathalieKalbach_Strollhood_Logo

Time for a Stroll Through the Hood . Strolls through my hood get me out of my studio, they help me unstuck and often I get inspired by what I see and to get new ideas to create something.

Strollaug_01

I cannot get enough of all the beautiful and different views Jersey City offers from the water front!

Strollaug_02

Our neighbor hood bakery not only makes really yummy bread, they also love to use stencils on the bread- and this one: LOVE!!!!

Strollaug_03

Look at this stink eye …he is not interested in any strolls through the hood …he rather spends his whole day exactly on that chair sleeping!

Strollaug_04

I love the iron work we have downtown in some areas around trees.

Stroll02

I have walked past this alley way a million times and never noticed it- and when I went through I found this mural.

Stroll01

The biggest Sunflowers I have ever bought at a farmers market – I had to carry them over my shoulder like a log and my arms were aching- but for 8Bucks they are like having the sun four times in your living room – plus, sunflowers are my favorite flowers .

Hope you liked the little stroll through the hood- until the next time . Have a gorgeous day

Stroll Through the Hood – July 2016

NathalieKalbach_Strollhood_Logo

It’s been a while since I have posted pictures of a Stroll Through the Hood – so I figured- it is about time again :) Strolls through my hood get me out of my studio, they help me unstuck and often I get inspired by what I see and have new ideas to create something.

Kalbach7-16Hood01

I am in full summer mode right now- we are taking a lot of bicycle trips and here is a favorite spot in Liberty State Park just a couple minutes from our house with an amazing view of Manhattan- yeah New Yorkers, take that, we have the best view ;)

Kalbach7-16Hood02

New and colorful graffiti getting up on Columbus Ave.

Kalbach7-16Hood03

Beautiful afternoon at the Jersey City Jazz Festival in the park in the Heights -again an amazing view.

Kalbach7-16Hood04

The historic Ellis Island Immigration train station in Liberty State Park is open again. The already very fragile building took a big hit from Hurricane Sandy, and was closed off for past couple years. I so wish there was a way to have markets and other fun stuff going on there.

Kalbach7-16Hood05

Jersey City  LGBT Vigil for the victims in Orlando. Love is Love!

Kalbach7-16Hood06

Love this colorful and fun mural I saw while exploring some different streets of the city.

Kalbach7-16Hood07

Another bike ride- another view – Jersey City, Empire State Building, Word Trade Center …not too shabby :)

Kalbach7-16Hood08

4th July in the park – it was such a beautiful day…until we were about to eat on the deck with our friends and wait for the fireworks…and it started pouring  – oh well – LOL- we still had fun!

Kalbach7-16Hood09

Love this by Sean9luo – “Alas, poor Yorick! I knew him…”

Hope you liked the little stroll through the hood- until the next time . Have a gorgeous day

I live in MA and come to NYC often. I would love the address’s for the art you showed in today’s post. Most wonderfully if you would privately email me? And any additional addresses you know of with wonderful street art that only a local would know. If and when you would like to come to MA I live 4 miles from the Plimouth Rock! Stroll Through The Hood – November 2015

I traveled most of this month but still had some fun time strolling through my hood. It is unusually warm for November and so sitting outside and getting happy doggies jump onto your lap and greeting you is something that can happen. The pic makes me laugh- you can barely see where the dog starts and ends ;)

StrollnatKalbach01

A lot of new street art was happening during November- here is a work in progress by Shepard Fairey again. I guess he likes J.C. :)

StrollnatKalbach02

And here is another one in progress- I will try to make sure to post pictures of the finished work next month.

StrollnatKalbach03

Below is a fun pigs in space graffiti by my friend Sam Pullin aka Bed Bugs in Love – love it! I also often say “if pigs could fly” …

StrollnatKalbach04

Mana Contemporary had an Open Studio day – perfect time to goof around there with some friends …sorry but …cannot take everything art related too serious ;)

StrollnatKalbach05

In front of Mana was this awesome new mural by How and Nosm

StrollnatKalbach06

And last – this made me crack up when I was crossing the street and looked up – by @sean9lugo – super fun!

StrollnatKalbach07

I love that there is so much street art is happening in Jersey City – it makes me excited to walk around everyday even if it is for normal errands like going to the supermarket and keeping an eye open if there is something new happening that might inspire me.

Hope you liked the stroll!

Have a gorgeous week

I really enjoy seeing your neighbourhood, would love to have so much street art around for inspiration. I live in a seaside area in NSW, Australia, lots of sea, sand and trees, but not much street art. A few years ago my husband and I went down to Sydney to a little island that was once a ship building facility and nowadays they use the area and all the old buildings for some art festivals. The one I am thinking of was called “Outpost”, and they had the most wonderful collection of street artists displaying their work, it was amazing. There was talk of it being an bi-annual event, but unfortunately I haven’t seen it advertised again. You may still be able to see a record of it on the web if you google “Outpost at Cockatoo Island”.
But thanks for sharing all the cool art in your neighbourhood.

Loved this post. Of course, the pics of you always make me smile because you are smiling/laughing in most of them!! But these were really fun with the doggie and silly friends! I have never seen this type of artwork in person – out in the world – so I can only imagine how it must look when you are standing near it. Personally – I so love seeing the world thru your eyes Nat. Seems like I have traveled miles with you and love it all. Love the bear and she is in orange – my fav!!! But these are all just so intriguing to me. Thanks bunches for sharing. j.

Stroll Through The Hood – October 2015

NathalieKalbach_Strollhood_Logo

This golden month was filled yet again with lot’s of bicycle trips. I will for sure miss those little rides in the colder months but let’s see what was inspiring and fun in October!

NatKalbach_Stroll01

Bam  – a really cool new mural surfaced near Mana Contemporary done by Shepard Fairey – amazeballs!

NatKalbach_Stroll02

And there he was with the mayor and some other peeps early in the morning when we took our bikes to see the mural. We had no idea he was there and that was quite cool …I did not say hi though … I am having art crushes and then get like super shy …and think he probably really doesn’t need a person jumping like a 3 year old telling him “love your stuff, so cool ” hence nothing more intelligent went through my mind at the moment ;)

NatKalbach_Stroll03

Another bike ride – almost out of J.C.

NatKalbach_Stroll04

flying by a mural by Li-Hill

NatKalbach_Stroll05

Mural by Sue One.

NatKalbach_Stroll06

I tawt I taw a puddy cat ;)  – this one is by Jerkface

NatKalbach_Stroll07

Another weekend we spent a couple hours at the Secret Beach – where you have a fantastic view of Lady Liberty and you are pretty much alone …

NatKalbach_Stroll08

I am still fascinated by horseshoe crabs – this one is a mini baby horseshoe crab- it was smaller than the palm of my hand.

NatKalbach_Stroll09

I love the pattern here!

NatKalbach_Stroll10

yes yes- I am obsessed with the lady liberty- but also loved the natural colors and textures.

NatKalbach_Stroll11

The Secret Swamp – gorgeous colors right now

NatKalbach_Stroll12

And it was just so beautiful and peaceful – again crazy if you think you are a stone throw away from the busiest city in the U.S.A

NatKalbach_Stroll13

Now this crab shell totally spoke “Yoda-Face-Asleep” to me- tell me what you see :)

NatKalbach_Stroll14

And with this hidden path photo I wish you a wonderful day! Hope you enjoyed the stroll through my hood this month!

I do love your strolls and to see through your camera lens. This time I really enjoyed the beach photoes – there is something about beaches “off season” that I love. I can see the Yoda face when you mention it, but for me it was a Teenage mutant ninja turtle on the Shell …

Love your monthly strolls and seeing the murals. I’m certain they so much more impressive in real life! Shepard Fairey is from my hometown (Charleston SC) and he did some beautiful work here back in 2014. And absolutely Yoda!!! You nailed it ?

Not sure if I would have come up with Yoda on my own, but I do see a face for sure. It continues to amaze me that you have such a view of Lady Liberty and you don’t even live in NYC. Love that first mural and how the brick gives it such a perfect texture (goes along with the strong lady).

Stroll Through The Hood – September 2015

I did some nice bicycle strolls through the hood this month – although I have to admit – I am still a bit scared riding my bike in this city. The streets are insanely bad and are pot hole traps and the car drivers basically never watch out for bicyclists. But anyway …let’s go!

NatKalbach_JerseyCity01

I loooooveee this- here it is still in progress. Mural by Hellbent close to Journal Square in Jersey City.

NatKalbach_JerseyCity02

This was taken at the Historic Jersey City and Harsimus Cemetery. Prior to it’s creation in 1829 it was the site of multiple Revolutionary War skirmishes and an ammunition storage during the War in 1812. Now it is inhabited by goats and maybe ghosts? :) Apparently there is a Halloween Candle Light Crawl scheduled on Halloween – you won’t find me there- I would probably pee my pants- LOL

NatKalbach_JerseyCity03

Dylon Egon ‘The Evolution of Modern American Man’ – love his work!

NatKalbach_JerseyCity04

The last couple months we had dinner almost every evening on our deck enjoying the city view -I will miss this for sure as it is getting colder.

NatKalbach_JerseyCity05

Have I mentioned before that EVERYTHING is bigger in America? Well …I am not the tallest person, I admit , but I took a photo of this sunflower looking up, it is like a huge shower head- LOL. FUN

NatKalbach_JerseyCity07

Another bike tour through the Liberty State Park – sneaking up from behind on Lady Liberty :)

NatKalbach_JerseyCity08

Fascinating lines and lights – the old Railway Station where immigrants coming from Ellis Island would head out to all other places but NYC in the States.

NatKalbach_JerseyCity09

just loved this view Jersey City,The World Trade Center and Manhattan…and look at the heron …I am amazed that these places exist – little oases in buzzing cities ….

NatKalbach_JerseyCity10

Another view of Manhattan … now…who has the best views of Manhattan? Yes ….we in Jersey City have ;)

NatKalbach_JerseyCity06

And things like this make my  day :) Hope you have a beautiful day too! Thanks for strolling with me through my hood!

Stroll Through The Hood – August 2015

NathalieKalbach_Strollhood_Logo

What a beautiful summer this is  – perfect to stroll through the hood :)

NatKalbach04

Graffiti by Emilio Florentine – love the energy!

NatKalbach01

Pedestrian Area down town – someone started painting those ugly planters – YES . so much better and making me really happy!

NatKalbach02

Beautiful window display by one of my favorite stores in Jersey City – Beekman Lane . It’s even prettier from inside with the light coming through the glassware into the store !

NatKalbach03

Loved the colors of the boarded windows against the brick – would love to have  a studio in this building.

NatKalbach05

Another awesome brick house – I love the details of the the windows and around the window as well as the alcove.

NatKalbach06

Not sure what this frame around a porch is called in english – but look at the gorgeous cut outs – super inspiring as a pattern for an Art Journal Spread.

NatKalbach07

NatKalbach08

Loving the colors, the lines, the font, the face – everything – about this by Christina Angelina aka @starfightera

NatKalbach09

And for the first time while waiting for my trainer in our community room of the building I realized these awesome textures -loving the brick, copper, wood, ceramic and textile mixture and the color scheme is speaking to me for fall.

NatKalbach10

Since I am a sucker for sunflowers, this makes me happy. I love those little community garden oases all over Jersey City.

Hope you enjoyed the stroll through the hood this month – until next time!

WoW it has been a while since I took you on a Stroll Through The Hood. Time to show some of the photos that inspired me while walking around in my neighborhood :)

NatKalbach_JC01

love this new mural at the Turnpike down right before the Holland Tunnel – this area needs a bit more color anyway!

NatKalbach_JC02

This skunk made me laugh in an alley way

NatKalbach_JC03

and this made me laugh even harder – Nice ….

NatKalbach_JC04

NatKalbach_JC05

ooops- looksie – someone finally finds it safe to join us on the terrace after 1 1/2 years …

NatKalbach_JC06

Love the view from the Marina at Liberty State Park – never seen so many boats in there than on Independence Day

NatKalbach_JC07

4th of July Party at Liberty State Park

NatKalbach_JC08

Goat at Liberty State Park …probably waiting for the ferry home after the grass chewing shift
