Stroll Through The Hood

Stroll Through The Hood

A lot of times I get asked what inspires me. And one of my key answers is always “a stroll through the hood”. It might be street art, it might be thoughts or feelings connected with certain sights, it might be stuff I find to buy…in one way or the other you might find the photos, the thoughts, the feelings, the colors or anything from those strolls in my art journal, a mixed media project or a scrapbooking layout.

I would love to show you once a month what inspired me while strolling through my neighborhood. I hope you like the little insights into my daily life where I live . This is also a wonderful way for me to remind myself on the inspiring things in the hood. Maybe you get inspired by those posts and even invite ME to a stroll in YOUR hood – feel free to grab the logo and leave a comment for me on the post and share!

Now that the weather is warmer, there is finally more strolling around in the neighbor hood and I discovered this:

NatKalbach_M14_01

which was by the way on the way to the art store- which I love because it has changing art work out side and has very knowledgable staff and …it is always good to support small businesses when they do such an awesome job

NatKalbach_M14_02

Perfect to also stop to get a yummie bread which was used with an awesome mask

NatKalbach_M14_03

On the way I love to see the obvious stated

NatKalbach_M14_04

And shake my European head in disbelief when stumbling upon adventurously installed power cables…in front of a window…in the middle of the pavement…

NatKalbach_M145

These are the things you still have to keep in mind and watch when you are looking for all this amazing street art work here

NatKalbach_M14_06

or smile at this

NatKalbach_M14_07

and then you can take the path and visit a friend in Hoboken and find inspiration in the subway station too -isn’t this color combination great? White, Blue, Black and Rost (forget the feeling that the subway station looks as if it is falling apart ;) )

NatKalbach_M14_08

And when you arrived in Hoboken you can drive your friend Carla crazy by telling her that Hoboken is the 7th Borough of NYC ;)

NatKalbach_M14_09

It was an awesome day and I am so happy that the weather is now getting better and more strolls in the hood are coming up…and time on our deck too :)

NatKalbach_M14_10

Wishing you a gorgeous day!

It has been a while since I did this….why? Because of this:

NatKalbach_StrollM01

and this

NatKalbach_StrollM02

perfect days to stay inside and work in the studio…or travel (NOT!) but sometimes it looked like this:

NatKalbach_StrollM03

and then I bit the bullet and bundled up to go outside ;)

NatKalbach_StrollM04

It was COLD- but I was rewarded with fun stuff like this

NatKalbach_StrollM05

Who could have PERDICTED? And then with a friend visiting you – it is even more fun to stroll through the hood :)

NatKalbach_StrollM06

Especially when said friends likes the same grungy stuff as I do …btw- I do love the background to this- it already inspired me to something :)

NatKalbach_StrollM07

And since they are big here on Security cameras…this is a good advice me thinks :) :) :)

NatKalbach_StrollM08

I do love this building- It will be in one of my canvases some time- I am sure.

NatKalbach_StrollM09

And a little view over to Manhattan…YES…we are the Sixth Borough…so there Hoboken…don’t even try to claim this…LOL (I figured a bit of local patriotism doesn’t hurt ;) )

NatKalbach_StrollM10

And an insane walk through snow and ice and wind chills in Liberty State Park rewards you with this view…

NatKalbach_StrollM11

I mean…all in all it is all about

NatKalbach_StrollM12

And as for Spring…well…gotta make your own spring at home I guess ;)

NatKalbach_StrollM13

Hope you had fun strolling through my hood – until next time…in J.C. :)

Hey! You can come stroll through my neighbor in PA anytime! I’m so excited to see you tomorrow, by the way! As I lay here in bed in the Jane Hotel (talk about eye candy – oh my gosh!), I can see your ‘hood right across the Hudson! Love seeing your strolls…

Thank you do much for the pictures and narrative of your stroll thru the hood. I don’t do much mixed media anymore but loved it at Art Venture. When taking your canvas class, I futzed around with materials a bit until I came up with a friend. She loves roses and calligraphy which were on one sheet of paper. I immediately selected it, and knew it was going to be for her.

Your question made me realize that I am most of the time inspired by the people for whom I make things. Even cards. When it is scrapbook pages, generally it is materials and ideas for titles that come together. I don’t even worry about matching my photos to papers. I like all the colors together.

Good question! But again, living on west coast, I enjoyed your stroll… you can keep the white stuff, though!

Nat, thanks for the stroll! It makes me want to take a stroll in my neighborhood and look for some inspiration. It also makes me want to go to our downtown area and walk around with my camera and capture some inspiration there, too. We have a small downtown as Winston-Salem is not a big city but we do have some lovely architecture. Inspiration can be found all around us, we just have to open our eyes and look with our hearts and our creative minds. I’ve been meaning to tell you how much I enjoyed Creative JumpStart. I’m already looking forward to next year! Thanks again for the walk-about and some giggles along the way!

This bathtub used as a planter in front of a neighbor hood florist always makes me laugh…I see this funny face with a funny nose …hilarious! – You should know by now I am a weirdo…if not…LOL- Welcome to my world!

NatKalbach_JC02

I did n’t even see those faces hidden in our stucco at our apartment building till my friend Marsha visiting me from The Netherlands pointed them out. There are several different ones…very funny. I am intrigued to find out about the story here…

NatKalbach_JC03

On the way to the Hamilton Farmers Market, I saw this sign…this makes me giggle ..I want this- LOL

NatKalbach_JC04

My sis in law and I took a screen printing class in my favorite store in J.C.  – Kanibal Home . The store is filled to the brim with wonderful home decor items, beautiful gifts, vintage furniture and cool clothing. The owner is amazing too and she probably thinks I am a weird stalker because my strolls through the hood let me end up in the store every second day – LOL.

NatKalbach_JC05

I love this old advertisement in the brick wall – you see a lot of those fading away in J.C. .

NatKalbach_JC06

Last saturday we were at TEDx Jersey City. A lot of great and inspiring talks- my favorite one was by Ben Figueroa. Ben “Broken English” Figueroa is a self-taught writer, spoken word artist, and stage performer. His talk was on “Step Your Art Up: Creating Honest Art for Today’s Youth”. It was such an amazing and inspiring speech  – I hope it will be soon available so I can share with you. BTW – it blew my mind that there almost no people at TEDx here…if you ever have a chance to go to one in your hood- GO!!!!

NatKalbach_JC07

Some of the street corners still have the old street signs- I love them – I hope they will keep them!

NatKalbach_JC08

A new mural- I saw the progress of it and it was pretty cool how they sprayed it –

NatKalbach_JC09

Other than strolls November was pretty crazy busy – so here is a stroll through our living-dining room where we hosted our house warming/home coming party and our first Thanksgiving Dinner in the states with our family. It was wonderful and we had a great time with our loved ones!

NatKalbach_JC010

Time to snuggle up in front of the fireplace for a moment…before the next crazy bit of the year begins. Looking forward to my December strolls through the hood…although…the weather here is something I have to get used to. While cold weather in Hamburg is like Needles in your Bone, in NJ/NYC it is like scissors in your lungs and the wind is like a shovel in your back…or …actually …it is more like a shovel right in your kisser ;)

Have a wonderful day in or out :)

Jersey City is oozing with creativity and it really makes me happy to wander around here. I wasn’t even surprised when I read that it shows in a 2011 survey of census data  Jersey City to have one the nation’s highest percentages of residents who work as artists. And now  there is one more ;)

NatKalbach_StrollSep02

And it is a 20 min Path-Ride away from Manhattan – I mean seriously- I met my wonderful friend Julie at MoMA and from door to door it took me 45 mins with walking between stations and getting lost and buying a Metro Card…not too shabby, eh? Next time I make it in 35…I hope – hehehe

NatKalbach_StrollSep065

There are farmers markets almost every day in close walking distance and I love to discover new or fun things. The purple peppers for example- beautiful. Also the New Jersey Tomatoes- all kinds of colors and forms and boy are those yummie!

NatKalbach_StrollSep09

Also very interesting business models around here- LOL- I am not sure if that store would work in Germany-but hey- I love the set up and think it is also very inspirational with the green and yellow,  the circles and the stenciled title :)

NatKalbach_StrollSep10

Advertising at it’s best…LOL- love this – I was cracking up!

NatKalbach_StrollSep08

I also love all the black iron cast railings in front of the brownstones here- so beautiful and so detailed too.

NatKalbach_StrollSep03

About a 20 minute walk from here starts the Liberty State Park – I love this place! It starts with this Marina and this view of Jersey City Down Town and Manhattan.

NatKalbach_StrollSep04

Also in the Park is the official New Jersey 9/11 Monument called “Empty Sky” .  It’s short illusion of the twin towers still existing is very emotional and touching.

NatKalbach_StrollSep05

While walking further along the Park, my husband and I started talking about our container and when it should come in, we knew it should be in around that day and go to somewhere in Newark Harbor. So we checked on the vessel’s tracking and I kid you not – my husband yelled “It just passed under the George Washington Bridge three minutes ago”…and we were staring right at the bridge at that very moment. So we started running like idiots until we saw the ship coming out again behind the Statue of Liberty – you cannot really see it on the photo – as a cell phone camera can only do that much – but YES it was it. It was quite funny. So the container is in…now it is up to customs on how long this will take to clear. After we got clarified our ship made it, we were able to look at the main tourist attractions again ;)

NatKalbach_StrollSep11

Jersey City Skyline to the left, Manhattan in the middle and to the right. Amazing to see these buildings all together.

NatKalbach_StrollSep07

I couldn’t pass up this opportunity to photograph the Freedom Tower through a field of sunflowers. The one leave drives me nuts though- hahahha- but I couldn’t get  it over me to take it off (read – I am wayyyyy to short to even reach it ;) ).

I hope you enjoyed the first stroll through my hood here in J.C. and I for sure will keep them coming ;)

have a beautiful day!

I hope you like the little insights into my daily life where I live (this is the last one from Hamburg, Germany). This is also a wonderful way for me to remind myself on the inspiring things in the hood. Maybe you get inspired by those posts and even invite ME to a stroll in YOUR hood – feel free to grab the logo and leave a comment for me on the post and share!

NatKalbachAugustroll02

While on a Beatles-Tour with a friend (yes…you gotta do some sightseeing in your own city) I actually for the first time realized the St. Joseeh Church in my neighbor-neighborhood St. Pauli. The Beatles started their career in Hamburg and it is said that Lennon once said: “I might have been born in Liverpool but I grew up in Hamburg.” Well…same for me- I might have been born in Düsseldorf but I grew up here as well…or so I think…snigger ;)

NatKalbachAugustroll06

Actually I let you down a bit on photos of the hood- LOL- there will be photos of me in the hood mostly. I asked Andreas Muhme to take some photos of me in the hood as a memory- and we had a wonderful morning.

NatKalbachAugustroll05

He always makes me laugh and do the worst faces…I guess it is a face of the hood ;)

NatKalbachAugustroll03

Here is actually my bestie, former room mate and maid of honor Esther goofing around in front of our old apartment. We used to live in the yellow house in the background which back then wasn’t as cutely renovated and we froze a lot with wooden windows and had the ugliest bathroom you could imagine. But oh I loved this little place – lot’s of happy memories connected with it.

NatKalbachAugustroll01

And just recently they put up these tourist signs in my hood. It is quite funny for me- because 20 years ago when I moved here, my family would anxiously call me because they heard bad stuff again about my area on the news and would asked if I was ok. Nobody wanted to live here, the rents were still low and now, the rent skyrocketed, and it is constantly changing – some things are good some things are not good at all…this neighborhood is tourist destination when you go to Hamburg. I made a joke when I saw the sign and said “I guess it is indeed time to go now” ;)

And so..this was the last stroll through my Hamburg Hood (at least online ;) ) …I am moving in less than 2 weeks. Packing up stuff, doing lot’s of paper work, sorting, giving things away to friends, seeing lot’s of friends every day…slowly saying good bye to this wonderful place that was my home for 20 years. But I am so excited to stroll through my new hood in Jersey City next month and I cannot wait to share pictures with you.

Have a wonderful day!

This must be challenging. I love all the strolls through Hamburg that you have shared. On to new adventures!

Your pictures also make me sad. I lived in exciting cities my whole life until I met my husband and moved to the country and I still miss that vibrancy of city life. But I am doing my best to embrace country life.

I am looking forward to your strolls and post when you get to Jersey, your new hood! Although I live in the states, I’ve never been to NY so it will be interesting and fun to see your new hood. Stroll Through The Hood

Disclaimer: This post makes a bit fun of “The Lions of Michigan” – if you are a Lion of Michigan and weren’t in this crowd – I am sorry, I do not mean to make fun of all Lions of Michigan, nor all Lions nor the Lions Club nor all people of Michigan! If you are on that photo…sorry- if you hadn’t shouted out so loud..I would have not even noticed you in the crowd- you were almost invisible! ;)

I hope you like the little insights into my daily life where I live (at the moment Hamburg, Germany). This is also a wonderful way for me to remind myself on the inspiring things in the hood. Maybe you get inspired by those posts and even invite ME to a stroll in YOUR hood – feel free to grab the logo and leave a comment for me on the post and share!

You gotta love a neighbor hood where an artist works on the street – this guy is working on a canvas and is a friend of the hair dresser – the canvas will be hanging there soon. I hope I will see it finished. It is pretty cool!

NatKalbach_StrollJuly02

Our Central Park- LOL – it is a piece of land …prominent right smack at best building location – which is now for several years rented out for a “beach-club” – yup right…in the middle of the city, at the train tracks going above you have a piece of beach with nice chairs and you can hang out there if you want. Totally forgot to take Julie for a break there…oh well…we did so much ;)

NatKalbach_StrollJuly03

The usual saturday flea market from a different angle – it was so hot that day and soo crowded. But fun. Apparently this flea market made it to some travel guides for Hamburg

NatKalbach_StrollJuly04

The Lions of Michigan…we did almost not know they were here…almost ;) ROAAARRRR

NatKalbach_StrollJuly06

One Saturday morning I met my friend Sandra for a breakfast at one of the many portuguese cafe’s in this particular street. It is even called Galao (portuguese expresso with hot foamed milk) Strip . Great place for people watching and catching up before heading out to do the weekend grocery shopping.

NatKalbach_StrollJuly05

Well…gotta say I love Hamburg ;) Only one more Stroll from the hood is going to be from Hamburg. I think I might continue though once I moved to Jersey City- might be a good way to keep me going checking out my new hood. What do you think?

Have a wonderful day!

Oh my goodness Hamburg looks so cool. Jersey City has it’s cool spots- it’s changing so fast due to the increasing rents you’ll be a welcome addition to the artist community there.

Love this simple cute one -it would be a perfect postcard- and…the wall does indeed look like this- pink patina ;)

NathalieKalbach_Stroll02

Speaking of pink….hello…it is usually not my color- but ohh love. This is from the inside of my favorite flower store …you get a bunch of flowers- no big stuff around, 5 Bucks, and you are out. They open Wednesday till they sold all flowers…sometimes Friday your are out of luck. Then they are on their way to Holland again to stock up ;)  Awesome awesome- I know I will for sure miss this one.

NathalieKalbach_Stroll03

I love this in a little alley in the hood. I also love the background- I am not a brown color person- but this is intriguing with ll the dots and little hints of red.

NathalieKalbach_Stroll01

And how can you pass up this photo-op – in a site street around the corner – so much fun with Andreas Muhme– we did another photo shoot, this time outside and had fun strolling around looking for places.

And another pussy cat…again love the simplicity of it- and yet so cool!

NathalieKalbach_Stroll06

This is the outside of a kindergarten – loooveee the colors! So much fun!

NathalieKalbach_Stroll07

Especially since I know we move I walk around my neighborhood with more open eyes than ever and explore little alley ways too. It is a lot of fun.

Hope you liked it- see you next month in the hood ;)

hugs

What beautiful flowers – roses? We are not as fortunate to get a bunch for a low cost here in TX; but in order to go get roses we have to go to the supermarket – hate going shopping! No, no, really. I don’t enjoy shopping when there’s a lot of people and there’s always a lot of people around. I only go when I’m running out of food in my fridge! I’ll have to go around my hood and take pictures of the school grounds, see what interesting art I can find!

That kindergarten wall is very cool and makes me think that the students and teachers are creative. And yes, definitely your color pallet. My family thinks that I am strange because I just can not pass up an opportunity to take pics like the ones you took of yourself inside of the tiger’s mouth. Your hood will be changing soon.

I love these pillars that some of the houses have around here- this one is my favorite as it has also so much texture – ahhh – I want to create a background that looks like this

NathalieKalbach_strollmay02

This is outer wall to a garden of a kindergarten in the hood. I love this – it is funny and I am sure the kids love it too.

NathalieKalbach_strollmay03

I was rushing to go out with some friends when I passed by this clothes stores and the decoration made me stop. Love the clothespins lamps-  such a cool idea – it is formed chicken wire and attached to it are the clothes pins

NathalieKalbach_strollmay04

Love this view out of the window of the train right before you roll into my neighbor hood train station. BTW…notice T-Shirts ? Yes…the ONLY day so far in this spring there it was warm enough and I spent it in train….LOL

NathalieKalbach_strollmay05

I thought this was such a fun idea – in this shop which sells things from local designers and artists you step up from the shop into the window display and you can walk around the display and check the things out in the window. Great idea to make it part of the shopping experience.

Hope you liked it- see you next month in the hood ;)

hugs

That’s one of the things I miss about Germany. Living in the midwest you don’t see that. Sigh, I have a love/hate relationship with your blog. LOVE you, your art and your photos but yet, photos of “the hood” really (really) make me homesick for Bad Hersfeld. :-(.
