YES Nat – loved seeing your ‘rule of 3’! And you are so right – the fun of foam is that it’s not a perfect imprint – which is what I love best about your foam stamps. But then, I have always been weird that way – never wanted to do anything the same as anyone else!!!! I think your foam stamps are INCREDIBLE…. just like YOU!!!! XXj.

Tommy, glad you liked the video and yes give it another try. Just keep in mind that a foam stamp is not providing a perfect image as a rubber stamp and that is the wonderful thing about it. You can create texture with it – visual and actual texture and there are many more ways than the three I showed in the videos to apply paint – I will share some other tricks and tricks in the coming months. Hope you have fun with the bird stamp! Nat

I’m glad that you showed how to store the cut and foam with paint on it. I would not have thought of that. Thanks for the tips.

Blooper Reel! Acrylic Painting Workshop Outtakes

KalbachDVD Collage

Last year in November I went to the F+W studio to record some Acrylic Painting Workshop videos, which are being released at the moment. But…because I like to laugh…I thought, you might enjoy this blooper reel with all kinds of silly outtakes from the 4 day shoot.

Did you hear me snort? I snort when I laugh hysterically, are you a “laugh-snorter” too?

I hope you laughed as much as I did because, hey – we all need a good laugh once in a while ;)

I will share all links to the videos and more about the content soon :) I promise that the videos are seriously loaded with tons of information and techniques!

Have a wonderful day

Put a Stamp on it or… Check it out

Today is all about stamps :) Stamps on Video and about Stamps in a podcast:

Christine Urias from ScrapTime visited me at the Stampendous booth at CHA – Check out her video of me

Thank you Christine for coming by and doing such an awesome job every year to cover what is new at CHA – always fun to see you and Mark!

And now…if you are tired of seeing me …how about  listening to my kraut-accent on this Adventures in Arting Podcast hosted by Julie Fei-Fan Balzer. Julie, Rachel Greig and I talk about how we each started designing stamps, both the why and the how of how we each design stamps, the experience of seeing work that people make with our stamps, the appeal of stamping in general, and we give some stamping tips too!

Screen Shot 2016-02-16 at 6.20.48 PM

Thank you Julie for having me and to Julie and Rachel for this fun and interesting discussion about stamps.

I hope you enjoyed the visual and auditory stamp information !

Behind The Scenes – Filming My DVDs

FW-Goofy-Collage

Last year was really a whirlwind of a year and I might have to pinch myself still in disbelief things really happened- LOL. For example my trip to Cincinnati, Ohio where I was invited to film some Mixed Media DVD’s for F&W Media (parent company of Cloth Paper Scissors,  Artists Magazine, North Light Books,  Artists and Makers and many many more).

It was quite an operation and it was pretty cool to see how filming outside of a tiny messy studio with a little webcam works and how much work and how many awesome fun people are involved. Let me show you some behind the scenes photos :)

FW 02

I was so crazy nervous the first of the four days- you have no idea. Besides being nervous about the whole camera situation I also became pretty aware that I have an accent and make language mistakes …what if I would really blow it…LOL. No worries though …I think I compensated that with funny faces ;)

FW 03

Everything was good – The crew was super super sweet and Kristy Conlin who was my “student” for the filming was super fun to work with! We laughed a lot …

FW 05

And made smart comments about weird things…

FW 20

and made very important decisions on what to eat for lunch

FW 22

and just picked on each other ….LOL

FW 23

and smiled….a lot …when we didn’t know if the camera was already rolling or not…

FW 06

Here is Amy Jones, my producer – she is so sweet and awesome and organized and really put me at ease and was just amazingly encouraging and welcoming!

FW 18

FW 13

She also kept all of us in check …because you know…lot’s of Shenanigans happened during the takes ;)

FW 21

FW 25

FW 12

Lot’s of cameras and lot’s of light- boy – it was HOT in there …I have a new respect for everyone working in studios …ever walked through the light section of a big department store in your winter jacket? Double that feeling and you are close! Because of the noise you can’t run the air conditioner to cool it down either and it was a really warm November on top. So every time we were done with a take we pretty much went out side to cool off a bit.

FW 14

It was great to see how they had set up the set with my artwork

FW 16

FW 26

This is Sam – above – so much fun to work with him and Erin – below left. They are amazing!!!

And see George mounted on the camera?

FW 11

Yup- that is a trick to keep you reminded to look at him and so into the camera while talking …because…it is awkward to talk to the a camera…but talking to George …ha …nice ;)

FW 24

Amy stuck George into my Art Journal when I went home, which I forgot until I was teaching a class at Pratt where he fell out …very weird moment- LOL – try and explain that ;)…I need to do a page with him – LOL

FW 28

Such a wonderful crew of people- It was so wonderful to work with them and the four days went by really quick. I hope I will see them again :)

FW 08

The DVD’s are estimated to come out in March this year and I am looking forward to tell you what the content is- that I wasn’t allowed to share yet :)

I hope all of you on the East Coast are all warm and safe right now with the snow storm – I am snuggled into my warm studio and I am planning on doing some artwork and eat some hearty stew today. Have a wonderful weekend!

Art Tapas – Bite Sized Tips for the Mixed Media Artist – Tip #1 Storage

I am starting a new Web-Video-Series called – Art Tapas – Bite Sized Tips for the Mixed Media Artist.

Art Tapas are short videos (1- 3 mins) that will give some practical tips or advice about anything that is related to tools, art supplies or processes and any Mixed Media or Hobby Artist might appreciate. Lots of times these reflect some mistakes that I made along my journey, so to speak, things that I learned the hard way and sometimes they are just some things that I would have loved to have known when I actually started in Mixed Media.

But without further ado – here is your first Art Tapas

How do you store your acrylic paints? For some this might be obvious but, let’s talk about it, shall we? :)

Art Tapas – Bite Sized Tips for the Mixed Media Artist – #1 Storage from Nathalie Kalbach on Vimeo.

I hope you enjoyed this Art Tapa –  and if you have questions that you would love to have answered in some of the Art Tapas videos- let me know and I might just cook one up for you to nibble on :)

Happy Creating !

Love this concept of “Art Tapas”, Nat! Great tip! As artists we can appreciate form over function, but if our supplies cannot function we cannot create the form! ;)

Love the formate! And a great first tip. I don’t have a craft room or craft space so I store everything – including the acrylic paints – in my walk in craft storage. Never had a problem with paints drying up before they’re used up.

Clean and simple for sure, Nat! And a great tip. I also found this out the hard way, and since storing my paints in an opaque plastic storage tub kept INSIDE my closet, no more dried up paints! Can’t wait to see what other tips you will have for us—-thank you for taking the time to share with us!!!

Thank you Kathy! That is a great idea too to store them in plastic tubs in a closet- that way you can get the whole thing out when painting. Have a wonderful day!

What is an Art Journal? or … When the Why is clear the How is easy!

Art Journal …What is this thing? Let me try to explain in this video in my thick dscherman accent ;)

I art journal for different reasons:

  • to try out now techniques or art supplies
  • to get me creatively into swing before I paint
  • to get emotions and thoughts visually out
  • to try something that I will later apply in one form or the other on a canvas

So an art journal for me is a safe creative playground ;)
