From Small Beginnings – Tina Walker

It’s Tuesday and time for my Creative Squad to share a project with you with this month’s theme: “From Small Beginnings”. Throughout the month of September, the team will be using my n*Studio Stamps to interpret the theme. The change in seasons and the childhood ritual of Back to School in September has me thinking about starting new things – new projects, learning new things, and meeting new people, and all the excitement and challenges that come with all of these “new”s. For this theme, From Small Beginnings, my Squad will think about the process of starting something new and the very first steps they took. I’ll ask them, how did you experience a Beginning?

This week we bring you Tina Walker, our newest Creative Squad member!  Tina brings her beautiful vintage inspired style to our team and we are so excited to welcome her to the bunch.  We are also saying goodbye and thank you to our dear squad member Gwen Lafleur for the time being while she begins some new journeys in her life!

So here we have two gorgeous projects from Tina that use my Marks stamp set: an inspiring art journal page and a charming little keepsake gift bag for you to enjoy!

Hi!  Tina Walker here today with my very first n*studio Creative Team post!  I am super excited and super thrilled to be part of Natalie’s Creative Squad and I have to pinch myself every day to make sure my life is real!  This month’s theme is a perfect way to celebrate my new beginning here at Nat’s and to share a bit about the beginning of my creative journey.

The theme this month is “From Small Beginnings” and that explains simply in three small words how I got to where I am today.  My creative journey began with an occasional crafty project that could be completed when I had a few spare moments in between daily family and work responsibilities.  It wasn’t something that I had to do, but more something I did as a hobby and fun activity.  As life changed (as it does) and my children grew, I found myself immersed into the scrapbook world with full force.  Scrapbooking evolved to all types of mixed media, art journaling, and DIY.  Many of my creative dreams were actually happening and creating was no longer just a hobby, but more a way of life.  I found that the more I enveloped myself in creating, the more I discovered who I was and the more it revealed who I wanted to become.  I really wanted to capture this ‘light bulb moment’ on an art journal spread, using a quote from ‘Joyce Meyer’ to say what I struggle saying in my own words.

To be honest, the graphic image created by using all ‘Xs’, with one lone red ‘X’, visually defines the feeling without words.  But I think the quote strengthens the message about how a small change can actually bring about a big beginning.

Keeping the rest of my spread simple and un-cluttered emphasizes the message even more.

Because this is a new beginning for me, I wanted to share another quick and fun project that is also a great functional way to celebrate new beginnings.

Do you know someone getting married?  Do you have a friend starting school?  Do you want to say Thank You to a special somebody?  How about creating a handmade gift bag perfect for gift cards and jewelry. Using the same ‘X’ stamp I used on my art journal spread, I stamped/heat embossed the canvas bag, adding hand-stitching to highlight the ‘X’s. You can decorate your bag with your favorite ribbons, buttons or vintage findings to make your gift even more memorable.

You can make these ahead of time and display them until they are ready for giving.  I have mine hanging from an old vintage printer drawer. Functional and decorative.  Perfect!

Inspired by my Summer Vacation

After sending in my final manuscript for my book and being done with loads of “secret” stuff I will share in the next months with you, I needed a little break and I took a week off to recharge.

My husband and I went for a couple of days down the Jersey Shore and spent some time with our family close to Sea Isle City. You see my awesome niece and nephew in the photo above. We had a really relaxing time, celebrated big birthdays and anniversaries and the beach was just so beautiful! Love my family!

On our anniversary we stopped on the way back to Jersey City at Ashbury Park. I love the old convention building and there is a lot of awesome street art around there.

I spend one day at home and then headed out to Boston to visit my friend Julie Fei-Fan Balzer . We had a crazy fun time. We went to the Museum of Fine Art – and finished the Art Stroll with some sketching (the art stroll is coming later)

We had an insane amount of food ….yes that is my kind of vacation and so yummie-. High Tea – chatting, laughing and having a good girlfriend time- now if that is not vacation *wink

We ate even more – here I am in a fancy bib and two new shells -and hey – I don’t care- eating lobster is super duper expensive in Europe – so this is special and funny in a plastic bib – LOL

Now I am back in the n*Studio and recharged for new fun things to come! There was so much inspiration in the museum, the chats, the sightseeing, the beach, the food. It feels good to have a brush in the hand again and let see where the inspiration from my summer vacation leads me.

    N., loved the art walks, and I have another small world — I was raised on a chicken farm in Vineland, New Jersey — In the back of everybodys’ farms, for miles and miles around; Campbell Soup Company rented our land to raise tomatoes for their famous tomatoe soup — I absolutely started salivating as soon as you mentioned eating South Jersey tomatoes– I still have mouth sores for eating millions of tomatoes every summer — Nat, thanks for the memories !!! love this vacation of yours —SAM

    I couldn’t help but laugh when I read about your vacation. What a small world we live in. When I first moved to NJ I lived in Sea Isle with my sister and her family and then moved to Cape May where I live now. Sea Isle was nice but barren and CM is just gorgeous. Sounds like you had a fantastic vacation and then you headed to one of my favorite places..Boston. My daughter went to Boston University of the Arts and I loved going to visit. Sadly not much of a vacation for me this year as health is a issue.

    Love your new top Nat!
    High Tea is always fun with cucumber sandwiches and desserts.
    I had a wonderful summer with 2 camping trips and one week in a cabin on a lake. Inspired by nature I made a painting of birch trees when a painter at the campground gave me a one on one class.
    Now back to school for my son and I (lunch lady with a hair net) and the fall with pumpkin muffins and cooler days ahead with (hopefully) some pretty leaves to draw inspiration from.

Art Stroll: Dadaglobe Reconstructed at MoMA

A couple weeks ago Andrew Borloz (check his amazing new stencils out!) and I met in the City for a an extended Art Stroll, to be precise – three art strolls and this is the first of them.

Our first stop was the Dadaglobe Reconstructed exhibition at MoMA. Dada is an Anti-Art Movement founded in 1916 in Zurich which spread all over the world. Dada embraced the idea of art as protest and rejected the idea of art as commodity. The world had changed after WWI and artists were ready to break down hierarchy, breaking rules and thinking about what was going on in the world. Usual themes of Dada were politics of the time, new technology, ideas of authority – striving to equalize, turning everyday objects into art. Dada revolutionized Modern Art, anything was possible, mixing ideas, embracing everyday objects as potential art materials, using collage etc.

Dadaglobe was planned by Tristan Tzara, one of the founders of the Dada Movement. He wanted to create a book to be published in 1921 and invited 50 artists from 10 different countries to submit artworks for the book. The work was to be mailed and usually in the size of the later book pages. Reaching out this way was in itself revolutionary as it was a collaboration of international exchange in a time of Nationalism where many resentments against other nations existed and some countries weren’t allowed to travel everywhere. Unfortunately for financial and other reasons the book was never published, but what remained were some of the artwork that was sent in, and the cataloging how Tzara envisioned the layout of the book and the order of the artwork.

In his solicitation letters Tzara instructed his fellow artists to provide 2-3 reproductions of their work, drawings, a book page with text and a photograph of themselves which they could alter freely. The last part of the instructions was the one that the artists seemed to have the most fun with and went wild.

In Picabia’s self portrait he describes himself as a failure, a wag and a gigolo and represents himself as a clown .

In this drawing Picabia created an calligraphic signature and then signs it , mocking conventions of authorship and authenticity.

I had to keep in mind that all the artwork in this exhibition was not made for the wall, they were made for reproduction in book form and the exhibition shows more or less the Making of a Book.

I love that the self portrait shows her with the artwork below – it was wonderful to see the original work

which she then also had painted. Again I loved that they included the original artwork which she submitted as a photograph for the book.

Submitted was a photograph of Duchamp’s painting.

I really loved the pieces below- one of the reasons is that the german text is actually quite funny – I know… unfair ;)

Baader wrote Hannah Höch after he received the invitation by Tzara that he was very excited about this clever and good idea for a collaboration. How cool is that?

This is my favorite- I love Max Ernst and his humor – he is one of my favorite artists and a lot of the techniques that we as Mixed Media Artist use were actually invented by him. The above work says “Speak loud! Be brave!”

It was a fun exhibition and I loved that the movement of Dada and the projects for Dadaglobe got many later very famous artists inspired and trying new things and approaches to their art. That is why collaborating with other artists can be such an rewarding and inspiring thing to do!

Such a beautiful quote! I used my Bird Stamp Set and my initial bird that was the start of my stamp design.

I created a background using the masks and stencils in the Bird set, and then used the patterned foam stamp and painted inside with brush.

Say Yes to New Adventures – Michelle Rydell

It’s Tuesday and time for my Creative Squad to share a project with you with this month’s theme: “Say Yes to New Adventures”. Throughout the month of August, the team has been using any of my n*Studio Stamps and Stencils they would like to use to interpret the theme. Here in the northern hemisphere, summer is coming to a close and it’s about time to seize the days and go on a little adventure before hibernation! With this in mind, the team has created something that celebrates the spirit of adventure.

This week we bring you Michelle Rydell and an art journal page all about her adventures with love!

As soon as I heard that the theme for this month was “Say Yes to New Adventures,” I knew I wanted to do a colorful, many-layered page, to represent the many adventures I’ve had with my hubby Michael! I also thought it would be a great opportunity to make the creation of the page an adventure in itself, by letting it develop organically, instead of having a set plan before beginning…

Here’s how it went…  I opened to a page in my journal that already had the background painted, and a few random collage elements pasted on. I set up my table with a bunch of Dylusions acrylic paints, and foam tools, and got to work…

The first stencil I used was the one from the Fashion Dame set, which I applied randomly around the page with turquoise paint…

And then added some white doodling with a paint pen.

Next I used the Batik Stencil, with Pomegranate paint for contrast. I applied random bits of it in the “empty” spaces…

I kept up the same process, adding the stencils from the following foam stamp sets: Bird (in pink), Elephant (in yellow) and then Urban Scribble (in orange), adding doodling here and there along the way…

At this point, I printed out a 5 x 7” photo from our wedding, and gently set it where I thought I wanted it to go, outlining with a Stabilo all pencil.

I removed the photo (so as to not get it dirty) and activated the water-soluble pencil with matte medium to make a nice black frame for contrast. After that I realized the page was needing some drippage! Over to the spray station it went, and high flow paint was added along the top edge, spraying with water to increase the dripping effect.

Looking at the page without the photo gave me an idea – that frame would be a perfect place to put the quote I had in mind! Busting out the stabilo pencil again, I created the journaling lines, and then used a paint pen to create the background and lettering. I stepped back and took a look… I felt like it was complete! No photo needed! Here’s how the final page turned out…

Inspiration from Around the Globe… August!

This Tuesday we’re taking a short break from our Creative Squad (they will be back next week with one last “Say Yes to New Adventures” project) to bring you some amazing projects from around the globe. As you know, my stamps and stencil designs are available for purchase online and maybe even in your local craft store, so crafters and mixed media artists and art journalers from around the world are using them. Finally is this nifty printed canvas pencil case from one of my former students, Riikka Kovasin from Finland.  She layered a bunch of designs including my Marks stamp set on this little case and the results are awesome.

Photoshoot at F+W in Cincinnati, Ohio

This June I went to Cincinnati for the photo shoot for my book. It was such a fun week and I loved learning yet another step on how an art & craft book gets put together.

Christine is the awesome photographer for F+W and here she is taking photos of some of my artwork for the book. What takes me ages to do took her about 2 seconds per painting.

The interesting part was how the step-outs for the book are being photographed. There was an insane amount of pre work involved. Basically each step needs to be prepared so it can be photographed without stopping and waiting for paint to dry or layers to be applied. So I had to replicate certain projects about 10 times, just so I could show the different stages of a technique. Which …admittedly while preparing wasn’t my favorite part- but it made the photo shoot a breeze!

We also did some video shooting for the promo video of the book …yeah baby – hair frizz is my name on a hot and humid day – LOL.

Aaron below was looking out for me and that there is no train coming …well in this pic he is being shooshed away by me so I can take a picture, but for the rest of the shoot he was either protective or attaching clothes pins secretly onto us.

It was a lot of fun and I am so grateful that I get to work with such an awesome team on something that is so dear to my heart. The book is going soon to copy editing, so I have a bit of a breather time before I get it back. Oh man this is really not for the impatient one- hehehehe.

    What a fun post to read. I loved seeing the behind the scenes shots and the train track looked like a super fun photo shoot. You are so adorable. AND you are wearing my favorite sneakers! I live in mine and they look like it haha! Love ya!

      heheeh- Rae- mine are newer ones- the old sneakers fell apart after many years. Sometimes I look at them and think “boy …you like really new” LOL. have a wonderful weekend my friend!
