YEah – ich freue mich riesig Emily Falconbridge interviewen zu dürfen, deren Arbeit ich seit langem bewundere.

I’m really happy to be able to interview Emily Falconbridge, who’s work I admire for a long time.

Emily ist Australierin, verheiratet und ist mit ihrem Mann und ihrer kleinen Tochter erst vor einem knappen Jahr von Australien nach Los Angeles, USA ausgewandert.

Emily is from Australia, married and she and her husband as well as their little daughter just moved from Australia to Los Angeles about a year ago.

Sie ist in diversen Magazinen veröffentlicht worden, unter anderem Scrapbook Answers, sie war Co-Autorin des Buches Card Art und hat an den Büchern Freestyle und Designing With type von Autumn Leaves mitgewirkt. Darüberhinaus ist Emily ein GardenGirl bei 2Peas.
She was published in several magazines, including Scrapbook Answers, she was Co-Author of the book Card Art and contributed her work to the Books Freestyle and Designing with type by Autumn Leaves. Furthermore Emily is a GardenGirl at 2Peas.
Hi Emiliy – I’m really happy to have an interview with you since I just love your style! Hi Emily – ich freue mich total ein Interview mit Dir zu führen, weil ich Deinen Stil liebe!

Emily, how long are you scrapbooking and how did you discover this hobby? Emily wie lange scrapbookst Du und wie hast Du dieses Hobby entdeckt?

I started scrapbooking officially in 1998 – my mum had been doing it for a while and was keen to get me hooked! she bought me a stash of supplies and put them in a plastic crate for my christmas present! at the same time i met my best friend who was a die hard scrapbooker, so i would take my little crate to her house and we would spread out on the floor and crank out the pages!

Ich habe offiziell 1998 mit dem Scrapbooken begonnen – meine Mutter tat dies schon eine ganze Weile und war sehr erpicht, mich  dafür zu gewinnen! Sie kaufte mir einen Haufen Materialien und packte sie in eine Plastikkiste als ein Weihnachtsgeschenk! Zu gleichen Zeit traf ich meine beste Freundin, die eine absolut überzeugte Scrapbookerin war und brauchte meine kleine Kiste mit. Wir machten uns auf dem Fußboden breit und hauten die Seiten raus.

You said once something that made me really thinking: that one should embrace one’s old creations – can you show us your first layout? Du hast einmal etwas gesagt, was mich sehr nachdenklich gemacht hat: man sollte seine alten Werke mit Freuden betrachten – zeigst Du uns Dein erstes Layout?

ooh, i wish i could! when we moved from Australia i left all of my old albums with my mum to save on shipping costs…my early layouts were quite hilarious – normally involved me cutting a shape out of fluorescent cardstock to match the theme – ie, for photos of a trip i went on, i cut out a giant bright blue aero plane to put the pictures on top of! of course i look back and think these are pretty silly, but i love that they were a reflection of my ideas at the time, and it takes me back to how i felt when i made them, and i think that is more important than cool looking pages! i like to see my handwriting and the elements i chose and be transported back in time.

Oh, ich wünschte ich könnte! Als wir von Australien hierher zogen, ließ ich all meine alten Alben bei meiner Mutter um die Transportkosten niedrig zu halten. meine frühen Layouts waren ziemlich lustig , normalerweise schnitt ich eine zum Thema passende Form aus fluoreszierendem Cardstock aus z.B. fü¼r Reisefotos ein riesiges knallblaues Flugzeug, um sodann die Fotos darauf zu kleben! Natürlich blicke ich zurück und denke, dass diese Layouts ziemlich albern sind, aber ich liebe, dass sie eine Reflektion meiner damaligen Gedanken sind und sie erinnern mich daran wie ich fühlte als ich diese Layouts machte und ich denke, dass dies weitaus wichtiger ist als cool aussehende Seiten! Ich mag es meine Handschrift und die ausgewählten Elemente zu sehen und in der Zeit zurückzureisen.

What was the first extraordinary technique you used on a layout and how did it work?

Welche ungewöhnliche Technik war die erste, die Du auf einem Layout angewandt und wie war das Ergebnis?

i think it was the first time i ever used paint on a layout. i can’t believe it had never occurred to me before seeing Heidi Swapp do it in DW Textures. i was like ‘WOOOW!’, that’s phenomenal! from then on i have experimented with paint and art supplies and LOVED IT!

Ich denke es war das erste Mal Farbe auf einem Layout. Ich kann nicht glauben, dass mir dies nicht viel früher eingefallen ist, sondern erst, als ich Heidi Swapp damit in DW Textures arbeiten sah. Ich war total hin und weg Wooooow, das ist phänomenal! Seit diesem Zeitpunkt experimentiere ich mit Farbe und Kunstartikeln und ich LIEBE ES!

Can you also show us one of your latest layouts? Zeigst Du uns auch eines Deiner letzten Layouts?

i actually did this a year ago exactly but it is one of my all time favorites – it is taped up on my wall and always serves as a reminder to me! it is simple, but powerful.

Dieses hier habe ich exakt ein Jahr zuvor gemacht aber es eines meiner absoluten Lieblingslayouts . es ist an meiner Wand befestigt und es dient als eine ständige Erinnerung an mich! Es ist einfach aber aussagekräftig.

I think Scrapbook Answers with all the techniques was such a perfect magazine for you – what do you think about the sad fact that this unique magazine is gone?

Meiner Meinung nach war Scrapbook Answers mit all den Technik-Artikeln das perfekte Magazin für Dich – was denkst Du über den traurigen Umstand, dass dieses einzigartige Magazin nun nicht mehr verlegt wird?

i think it is SUCH a shame – they were really forging ahead in the industry as something unique and clever – with humour, equality and tons of information and cool artwork! it was a lot of fun to work for them, and i am really sad that the publishing house closed them down along with several other women’s magazines.

Ich denke es ist wirklich SEHR traurig , sie waren wirklich fortschrittlich in dieser Branche als etwas einzigartiges and cleveres mit Humor, Gleichberechtigung und einer Tonne von Informationen und coolen Kunstwerken! Es hat wirklich Spass gemacht mit ihnen zusammenzuarbeiten und ich bin wirklich traurig, dass Verlagshaus sie gemeinsam mit vielen anderen Frauenzeitschriften geschlossen hat.

What is your favorite technique right now? Welche Technik magst Du zur Zeit am liebsten?

i really enjoy flicking ink onto a painted background! it looks cool and is really quite satisfying to do! ;)

Zur Zeit geniesse ich es sehr, Ink auf einen gemalten Hintergrund zu schnellen! Es sieht sehr cool aus und ist recht befriedigend! ;-)

Emily, you said scrapbooking helps you to feel yourself – can you explain what you mean by this? Emily, Du sagst, Scrapbooking hilft Dir Dich selbst zu fühlen – kannst Du uns erklären, was Du damit meinst?

i have always loved to think about things…and memories are so important to me. scrapbooking helps me to process MY LIFE…it gives me time to nurture myself by freely creating something – painting, sewing, cutting, collaging – but at the same time reflecting on my life and the things i cherish the most. it helps me to appreciate my life, it helps me to set goals and want to improve my life.

Ich habe es immer genossen über Dinge nachzudenken und Erinnerungen sind sehr wichtig für mich. Scrapbooking hilft mir MEIN LEBEN aufzuarbeiten…es gibt mir Zeit mein Ich zu pflegen indem ich ganz frei etwas kreiere –  malen, nä¤hen, ausschneiden, Collagen machen aber zur gleichen Zeit reflektiere ich mein Leben und die Dinge die ich am meisten schätze. Es hilft mir mein Leben zu schätzen, es hilft mir Ziele zu setzen und mein Leben zu verbessern.

You just started teaching classes this year – what do you like about teaching classes and does doing this help you to learn things? Du hast gerade damit begonnen Kurse zu geben – was magst Du dran und hilft Dir diese Dinge hinzu zu lernen?

i actually taught classes in australia for 2 years before i moved to the US, much
smaller though! i love to share ideas and get people excited about scrapbooking, to maybe help people think about the way they create a tiny bit differently – to open them up to new ways of looking at things. my main goal as a teacher is to help others embrace themselves and THEIR art, not to create the way that *i* do, but to do what makes them happy and appreciate what they do for themselves. i always, always learn things when i teach a class. i absolutely LOVE meeting women from all over the world who share in
this same passion for creating and for valuing their lives. i get really inspired by them. in all of my classes i will share some techniques or ideas with the class first, then let them loose to create THEIR OWN piece or project. so i am constantly blown away by the way people take my one tiny snippet of information and create amazing things with it, i just get so happy seeing everyone make their own individual project, they all turn out differently and it is wonderful. i also love to learn new ways of thinking from the women who come to my class, they might share a new spin on a technique, or help me to see a different way to look at something. People are sunshine!

Ich habe eigentlich schon Kurse in Australien unterrichtet, zwei Jahre bevor ich in die USA zog, nur waren diese viel kleiner! Ich liebe es Ideen mit anderen zu teilen, bei ihnen Spannung zu erzeugen, ihnen möglicherweise zu helfen ein wenig anders über das Wie des kreativen Prozesses nachzudenken, dies vielleicht ein wenig zu ändern  sie zu öffnen, für neue Sichtweisen. Mein Hauptziel als Lehrerin ist es anderen zu helfen sich und IHRE Kunst einzubeziehen und nicht auf die Weise zu gestalten, wie ich es tue. Das zu tun, was sie glücklich macht und zu schätzen, was sie für sich selbst tun. Ich lerne immer Dinge wenn ich einen Kurs unterrichte. Ich LIEBE es sehr andere Frauen aus aller Welt zu treffen, die dieselbe Leidenschaft für das Schaffen von Kunst und die Wertschätzung ihrer selbst mit mir teilen. Ich werde sehr durch sie inspiriert. In all meinen Kursen teile ich erst Techniken oder Ideen mit den Teilnehmern und lasse sie dann frei ihre EIGENEN Stücke oder Projekte kreieren. Dadurch bin ich laufend völlig fasziniert von der Art wie die Leute mein kleines Stück Information aufgreifen und Dinge damit kreieren. Ich bin einfach glücklich wenn ich all die individuellen Projekte sehe, alle so unterschiedlich und wunderschön. Ich liebe es auch neue Dinge von den Frauen zu lernen, mögen sie eine neue Anwendung einer Technik mit mir teilen oder mir helfen etwas von einer anderen Seite zu betrachten. Menschen sind Sonnenschein!

One of the goals you set yourself for this year was to make more art for yourself. Did you succeed? Eines der Ziele die Du Dir Anfang diesen Jahres gesetzt hast, war mehr Kunst für Dich selbst zu machen. Warst Du erfolgreich?

actually, just recently i have learnt a few new skills which i am pretty happy about! i have been making wire bracelets, and also i just learnt how to felt. i have spent the year slowly ‘artsy-ing’ up my apartment too with collages, salvaged items i have altered, and of course my scrapbook pages!

Tatsächlich, ich habe gerade ein paar neue Fähigkeiten gelernt, über die ich sehr glücklich bin! Ich habe Draht-Armreifen gemacht und ich habe gerade gelernt wie man filzt. Ich habe das Jahr zudem damit verbracht, mein Apartment langsam mit Kunst zu verschönern  mit Collagen und gefundenen Objekten, die ich bearbeitet habe und natürlich, mit meinen Scrapbook-Seiten!

Emily, you think we are all on our own art journey and that there is no such thing as being not creative. Where does your personal art journey leads you to? Emily, Du denkst wir seien alle auf unserer eigenen Kunst-Reise und, dass es keine solche Sache gibt wie “nicht kreativ”. Wo führt Dich Deine Kunst-Reise hin?

it really is such an outlet for me. i feel such freedom and relief when i am swishing away with a paintbrush and pouring my heart out onto paper with journaling and pictures. moving across the world was a very daunting thing for me, and being able to art journal through this time has been invaluable.

Es ist wirklich solch ein Ventil für mich. Ich fühle solche eine Freiheit und Erleichterung wenn ich mit einem Farbpinsel rumsause und mein Herz auf dem Papier mit Journaling und Bildern ausschütte. Der Umzug um die Welt war sehr gewaltig für mich und in der Lage zu sein ein Art Journal während dieser Zeit zu führen, ist unbezahlbar.

What do you recommend to find one’s own path to one’s art journey? Welche Empfehlung hast Du, damit man seinen eigenen Pfad zu seiner Kunst-Reise findet?

i think as soon as we can let go of our own fear and worry about what other people
think about our art, we will be flying down the path of art-happiness! This is something that i am constantly striving for – being more accepting and less judgmental of myself. its paper, and photos, and paint, and glue! It doesn’t need to be such a big deal. it should make us happy.

Ich denke sobald wir loslassen können von unserer eigenen Angst und dem Sorgen machen darüber, was andere Leute über Deine Kusnt denken, fliegen wir über den Pfad der Kunst-Glückseligkeit! Das ist etwas wonach ich konstant strebe , mehr mich selbst zu akzeptieren und mich weniger zu bewerten. Es ist Papier und Fotos und Farbe und Kleber! Es braucht nicht so ein Riesending zu sein! Es sollte uns glücklich machen.

You are now living in the States for a year, what do you think is the main difference scrapbooking related to Australia? Du lebst nun seit einem Jahr in den Staaten, was denkst Du ist der Hauptunterschied im Bezug auf Scrapbooking zu Australien?

um, stuff is a lot cheaper here in the states!! haha!

Um, das Zeug ist viel billiger hier in den Staaten!! HaHa!
