Workshop at ScrapbookKings – more photos to follow. I love teaching at their place – if feels home and is so wonderfully organized. And I love meeting the girls again :) It was a crazy day. Later cocktails with friends at the harbour, Dinner and a stolen bike. As I said on Facebook already:

After a fun but short visit by two friends from Switzerland we had a wonderful evening with friends. 2 Americans, 2 Germans, 1 Danish and 1 Italian. hehehe- such a fun photo. Look how they all look as if they just can’t take this plate of German Food- that actually my husband prepared. LOL. They loved it though and had twice servings :)

Last friday I taught my second workshop for children. This time it took place at Liz’ and it was at a birthday party with 10 little 9 year old girls plus one 12 year old girl.
Letzten Freitag habe ich meinen zweiten Kinder-Workshop unterrichtet. Dieses Mal fand der Workshop bei Liz anläßlich einer Kindergeburtstagsfeier statt – zehn kleine 9-Jährige und eine 12-Jährige.
I taught the same workshop in NYC in March at PortraitBug where I had a small group with two 9year old and two 12year old girls.
Ich habe den gleichen Workshop in NYC bei PortraitBug im März unterrichtet, wo ich eine ganz kleine Gruppe mit zwei Neun- und zwei Zwölf-Jährigen hatte.
Here are some thoughts on workshops with children – resulting from those two workshops. Keep in mind that I do not have children :)
Hier ein paar Gedanken zu Kinder-Workshops – resultierend aus diesen beiden Workshops. Vergesst nicht, dass ich selbst keine Kinder habe :)
1:
Workshops with Children are pure fun! Children are little artists – they make the piece they create their own. They do get the inspiration, they look at your piece, but they choose their own colors, decide on their own which design and very rarely do they copy big parts of our piece. It is amazingly inspiring to watch them just go and have fun and enjoy the creative process.
Workshops mit Kindern machen unglaublich viel Spaß! Kinder sind kleine Künstler – sie schaffen es sich das Stück, welches sie bearbeiten, zu eigen zu machen. Sie lassen sich von Dir inspirieren, schauen Dein Stück an, aber sie wählen ihre eigenen Farben, zumeist wählen sie ein etwas anderes Design und sehr selten kopiert eines von ihnen große Elemente Deines Stückes. Es ist wirklich inspirierend ihnen zuzusehen, wie sie einfach loslegen und den kreativen Prozeß genießen.
2:
The smaller the group the better – or…if the group is bigger you definetly need help. With four kids in NYC I was really comfortable. I was easily able to answer all questions and have an eye on all of them. The pace was almost in sync. Different with eleven children. It feels as if there are 20 kids. It is really hard to keep an eye on all of them, at some points 5 at the same time are asking you questions while you still try to help one of the other kids and also try to keep materials out of paint. The kids even made some cute jokes that it would be really cool if I could tripple myself since they had so many questions. LOL. I was so happy that Liz helped me! So – with more then 6 kids you definetly need someone helping you!
Je kleiner die Gruppe desto besser….oder wenn die Gruppe größer ist, brauchst Du unbedingt Hilfe. Mit vier Kindern in NYC war es wirklich gemütlich. Ich konnte alle Fragen beantworten und war in der Lage alle Kinder und ihre Projekte im Auge zu behalten. Alle waren mehr oder weniger synchron. Ganz anders aber mit elf Kindern! Gefühlt sind das übrigens 20 Kinder- LOL. Es ist unglaublich schwer alle im Auge zu behalten, manchmal stellen fünf auf einmal Fragen, während ich noch einem anderen Kind half und dabei versuchte das Material aus der Acrylfarbe zu fischen. Die Kinder machten sogar ein paar witzige Bemerkungen, dass es doch cool wäre, wenn ich mich einfach verdreifachen könnte. LOL. Ich war so froh, dass Liz mir half! Also, wenn man mehr als sechs Kinder hat, braucht man unbedingt Hilfe.
3:
The attention span is not too long. Well…of course you think…but seriously that is something you easily forget as an adult. In NYC I did the workshop not as a canvas workshop and it was laid out for 1 1/2 hours. It was a bit of really rushing at points but it worked out well. At the birthday party we did this as a 3 hour canvas workshop and it was really hard to keep the kids focused after the third step of the project. It was ok since we let them play in between but still I think a shorter workshop would have been better. It was totally amazing to see in both workshops how three years make a difference – the 12year olds were in both places really good with the attention span while the 9 year old all had little problems.
Die Aufmerksamkeitsspanne hält nicht zu lange an. Nun…klar, denkt Ihr…aber ernsthaft, das ist etwas, was man als Erwachsener schnell vergisst. In NYC hatte ich den gleichen Workshop auf Cardstock und nicht als Leinwand gemacht, was bereits einen Schritt spart – der Workshop war außerdem auf 1 1/2 Stunden ausgelegt. Das führte zwar schon dazu, dass ich hier ziemlich zackig vorgehen mußte und sehr of die Kids auch antreiben mußte, aber es war eigentlich gar nicht so schlecht. Bei der Geburtstagsfeier gab ich den Workshop als Leinwand in 3 Stunden und nach den ersten drei Schritten war es für die Kinder recht schwer sich zu konzentrieren. Es war nicht schlimm, weil wir die Kids immer wieder zwischendurch spielen und toben ließen , aber falls ich nochmal einen Kinderworkshop machen sollte, auf jeden Fall einen kürzeren :) Übrigens fand ich den Unterschied zwischen den 9-Jährigen und den 12-Jährigen unglaublich groß – drei Jahre machen so viel aus.
4:
Not all 9year old do have the same skills. That I think astonished me the most. I had kids that were able to cut the tiniest pieces with scissors or paint the smallest windows of skyscrappers without going over the lines and on the other side kids that were’n even able to cut out huge pieces of paper with straight lines or painting without going over lines. It wasn’t a problem – you just have to be prepared that you have to help some kids so that they do not feel left out.
Nicht alle 9-Jährigen sind auf dem selben Level. Vor allem nicht motorisch. Der teilweise sehr große Unterschied hat mich wohl am meisten erstaunt. Während manche super fitzelige Dinge mit der Schere ausschnitten oder mini-Fenster im Wolkenkratzer anmalten, ohne über die Linien zu kommen – waren einige der Altersgenossinnen nicht in der Lage große gerade Stücke aus dem Papier zu schneiden oder einen kleinen Pinsel so zuführen, dass nicht alles neben dem anzumalenden Haus in einer anderen Farbe erschien. Es war kein Problem – man muß nur darauf vorbereitet sein, dass man einigen Kindern besonders helfen muß, damit diese sich nicht ausgeschlossen fühlen.
5:
Stop crying over your materials. Yeah…no kidding lol. If you use your own materials for a children workshop- just say good bye to clean tools. But be prepared to think ahead if you work with paints ….Kids love to forget where they have paint on their working place and drop everything into it – worst is their own creative piece (be prepared for some crying – just tell them it is ok and come up with a quick solution! – LOL) – not so bad is…your tools (whatever- you can clean it…it is just a tool…right ;) )
Heul nicht rum wenn Deine Materialien nicht so schön behandelt werden. Yup…kein Scherz – LOL. Wenn Du Deine eigenen Materialien verwendest, sag einfach Tschüßi zu sauberen Materialien. Wenn Du mit Acrylfarben arbeitest, versuche immer einen Schritt voraus zu denken …Kids vergessen einfach wo die Farbe überall drauf ist und schieben versehentlich alles rein. Am schlimmsten ist es, wenn sie ihre eigenen Werke reinschieben (sei auf ein paar Tränen vorbereitet – erzähl ihnen einfach, dass das ok ist und überleg Dir ganz schnell eine Lösung! – LOL) – Nicht so schlimm wenn es sich um Deine Werkzeuge handelt (was solls – Du kannst sie ja wieder saubermachen und…es ist ja doch nur ein Werkzeug… ;))
6:
Feel prepared to feel extremely warm and fuzzy after the workshop :) Really! Imagine all those cute little girls saying how much fun they had and holding up colorful awesome and fun projects. They tell you how they liked it…into your face …and it is a good feeling.
Bereite Dich auf ein ganz warmes Gefühl nach dem Workshop vor :) Wirklich! Stell Dir all diese kleinen niedlichen Mädels vor, die sagen wie viel Spaß sie hatten, während sie ihre farbenfrohen und wunderschönen Projekte in die Höhe halten. Sie werden Dir einfach erzählen wie sie es fanden…ins Gesicht…und das ist ein schönes Gefühl.

Hallo Nat,
diese gefühlten 20 Kinder bei 11 Kindern in einem Workshop kann ich gut nachvollziehen. Ich leite mittlerweile fast jeden Dienstag einen KinderKunstKlub, der sehr viel Spass macht, aber auch teilweise anstrengend ist. Die Kids sind in der ersten und in der zweiten Klasse und selbst bei den Erstklässlern sind sehr große Unterschiede festzustellen. Aber jede Stunde lohnt sich, es macht Spaß mit den Kindern zu arbeiten und schöne Dinge zu gestalten.

You are so right on with everything. I was exhausted by the end of the night, but the kids had a blast and Trouble #1 declared it her best birthday EVER! And I have to hand it to you…. you and kids? perfect combination!
So true about attention spans and the huge difference between different ages (I usually work with a 4,6, and 7 year-old on crafty projects). I’m glad that it was rewarding! Working with children usually is tiring and rewarding;-)

Zauberhaft, was Du da schreibst Nat. Erst mal find ich das sehr mutig von Dir – ich weiß, wovon ich rede … Und dann, ja – Kindern beim “arbeiten” zuzusehen ist etwas, was einen auf den Boden zurückholt, die Welt und sich selbst wieder in richtige Relation setzt. Unbezahlbar!

How funny- I spied this on the scaffolding.

It looked like the end of the world. When I came back from teaching a workshop for kiddos at Liz’ and got out of the train it went dark and started pouring. As you can see nobody is on the street- we all tried to hide under roofs and shop entrances. It was crazy. I got soaking wet, well I was better off then the skydiver at the harbour birthday who was found 40 km (25 Miles) away from the point he was suppposed to land (he was ok!).

And the next day – gorgeous weather. We went to buy even more plants and stuff for the terrasse and had a very good day outside. So the summer can come :)

Every five years I get the urge to take a look at the harbour birthday – where you usually only find tourists. I didn’t like it as usual – too crowded , to many drunk people early on the day and to cheesy music. But the fairy wheel right next to the train station with an overlook over the harbour was pretty cool! So…see you in five years- LOL
