CREATE event and family fun in New Jersey

Are you ready for a last round of pictures of my journey this July? NO? Well….LOL- sorry…I can’t hear you ;)

From Chicago I flew to New Jersey to vist my family and attend the CREATE event.  At Newark airport I was greated with this sign, which always makes me laugh but this time the more, since United let me check in an empty suitcase – as the full suitcase in the empty suitcase was 3 pounds too heavy. I was asked to pay 120 Dollars extra- so I just opened the bigger suitcase and took out my smaller suitcase and checked in the extra empty one for 35 Dollars. No need to voice my opinion- as always… a pleasure flying with you, United Airlines!

I had an amazing time with my family and friends- I miss them so much- family dinners, days playing with the kids, having fun times with my sis in law heading to antique stores, some fun time with my parents in law, an afternoon with my friend Joe, a lunch with my friends Bill and Karen – it was wonderful and I hope I see them soon again.

The classes at Create started with an amazing inspiring sight- at our hotel took also an Indian Wedding with four hundred guests place. The clothing and colors, the music, the smell of yummie spices – AMAZING!

My first class with Michelle Ward. I so love her work for many many years- and it was awesome to finally meet her and take a class in person. I had lot’s of fun.

I wrote about why I think it is good as a workshop teacher to step once in a while into the shoes of a student in my July newsletter. I absolutely loved the time in those shoes :) I will show you my finished book later- I need to finally get some studio time.

Next I took a class on colored transfers

 

and then I had a lovely evening with my friend Julie Fei Fan Balzer and Cheryl. Here is a photo Julie taking a photo of her food ;)

The next day I took a class with Jenn Mason – Monoprinting with the Gelli Arts Gel Printing Plates– lots of fun- and can’t wait to play more!

 

It was a whirlwind visit in NJ – but I loved going on a little motorcycle ride with my brother in law- he so rocks :) right before heading out to the airport.

    Yes, teachers should take classes to remind themselves of what it is like to be a student. I enjoyed the video from yesterday. Sad and beautiful at the same time. The last class I took in person was a zentangle one. I am excited to be signed up for one of Julie’s classes at AE later this month.

Chi-CHA-Town Summer 2012…or simply Summer CHA 2012 Part 2

Here we go with the second part of CHA Summer 2012 in Chicago :) BTW- did I mention that it was HOT in Chicago and COLD? Well, hot as soon as you left a building, it hit you like a wall and then you started freezing because the AC was so cold. I carried a woolen jacket with me to wear inside…shaking head- LOL

This was one of my favorite Christmas Lines at the Show . My Mind’s Eye – Rhonna Farrer. Loved the awesome mix of trendy chevron with vintage postcard and notebook paper patterns.

Sneaking behind the cute Mou Saha– haven’t seen her since we both taught in France years ago.

Loving the stamps!

Loved what I saw from this new company Farmhouse Paper Company which came out with some amazing new papers and chipboard and albums. The quality was awesome and I can’t wait to play with it – will show you more soon.

Per and Mia from Sweden – we laughed so hard because on the small floor we said good-bye a million times just to see each other five minutes later ;) It was fun though- they are sweet and awesome!

I had a blast with my Prima Marketing peeps :) They are so fun and I had a great time doing my Make n’ Takes there – see me in action- LOL

 

I will show the Make n’ Take as a tutorial in a video very soon :)

 

One of my favorite new products from CHA- these lightbulbs by Prima. I used them on this canvas here– and it was hard to use them…I wanted to keep them- just for me and hidden from the world- LOL

 

LOL- this picture is cracking me up ;) Not sure what we wanted to do…but it was funny.

 

Here is the Ruby Rocket booth- loved the wedding kinda decoration and see this:

VELLUM- shriek. Probably the biggest surprise of this show. Making a come back and you know what…I like it! (you have found me playing dead whenever someone asked me to use vellum the years before ;) )

These patterns are so cool- can’t wait to get my hand on these- I have lot’s of ideas!

And I loved these with the fitting paper by My Little Yellow Bicycle.

 

All in all it was a nice show – I loved meeting everyone and working at the show, it was inspiring and fun to see the new products and booths, but it was a small show and it was EMPTY. A lot of manufacturers were not there. As a CHA-Designer I will make sure to voice my opinion (hope they won’t put something on the bar code of my badge next time, if I do so ;)) . There are definitely things that are not going in the favor of neither CHA, nor the manufacturers nor  the retailers. If I would take the plunge to go there again with outraging airfares in summer from Germany? I doubt it …unless it is tied up again with something else.

    “Playing dead” if someone asked you to use vellum! Hahahaha! I laughed so hard at that! And your “special barcode” on your badge if you voice your opinions–too funny! But, I think it would be for the greater good if you did share your thoughts and opinions about the show. I agree with Sue, that it may be a sign of the economy, with so many of our favorites having to close their doors , or get absorbed by larger entities, and the expense of participating in a trade show. :(

    Thanks for the peek into the show, and that MME Rhonna Ferrar Christmas is gorgeous! Can’t wait! Fun to add those lightbulbs in with it!

Chi-CHA-Town Summer 2012…or simply Summer CHA 2012 Part I

My next stop on my journey was Chicago – I flew over with Bettina from My StampBox and we had a good time…two Krauts at the border from Canada to the U.S. …interesting….I must have come across pretty krautish too, because voicing my opinion over United Airlines Costumer Service (why the heck do I get yelled at that I didn’t check in again at the kiosk if I checked in online and have a boarding pass that says- go right to baggage drop off?) ended up in having my luggage receipt glued down right on the boarding pass bar code…which lead to a lot of waiting time in any following line. Thank you, United, always a pleasure flying with you….NOT ;)

    So jealous of you! I live about 90 miles from Chicago, and had it marked down on my calendar to go to CHA, but summer chaos got in the way! What great products! I especially love all the vintage pieces–those wired feathers w/text are the best! Hope they’ll be available in stores soon!

Workshops at Bizzy B’s in Toronto, Canada

I had an amazing time teaching at Bizzy B’s in Toronto. I love the store and Toni and Barb are amazing hostesses!

The photo above (by Bizzy B’s)  shows the “Nat-Wall” based on the material list for the workshops I sent them. They put all supplies I used during my workshops up on a special wall – I loved that! Such a cool idea! Thumbs up!!!

 

I taught four workshops over three days: Portrait of a Lady, Tag You are It, Daily Observations and Free Your Creativity. It was so much fun. Prima Products, Derwent Artbars, Spray Paints, PanPastels, Gesso, Gel Medium, Stencils, Acrylic Paints and more were part of the classes – I think the students enjoyed it- here are some pictures during the classes

The students were so so talented and awesome! After spending three days with lot’s of them, it felt like a mini-family- I miss you guys! But I know I see some of you soon again ;)

I gained about 20 pounds due to this guy here….Toni is the best cook and…. man did I eat – LOL. I guess some serious workouts are in order now ;)

    If you ever have a chance to take a class with Nathalie – DO IT! She is tons of fun – she has tons of product knowledge, will teach you lots of technique and she is great at helping you unleash your creativity – and did I mention she is lots of fun? Whoosh…or whirlwind traveling

There I am…back from what feels like several months and not 3 weeks of traveling- LOL. I did so many different things in different places that the feeling makes sense ;) First on the list was Canada Toronto – Sightseeing, Meeting Friends, Teaching Workshops, then off to the U.S. for CHA, Meeting Friends and then to New Jersey for Family, Friends and Taking Workshops :)

And you know I love to share my photos, thoughts and experiences from my travels- so I will dedicate several posts to this past journey ;)

so my frist stop was Toronto – where I was picked up by my wonderful friend Bettina who also owns myStamp Box . We had lot’s of fun- and she and her family made my stay so sweet and wonderful! Thank you!!! Here is Bettina showing off that she was driving around the whole time during the European Soccer Championship with the German flag (she is German too)…oh brother- LOL

We did some fun sightseeing – and I have to say I love Toronto. I had no real picture in my head, although I heard before that it is a beautiful city- and I loved it a lot. It had a European but still huge North American City flair, lot’s of green, cute houses and very clean (I know it is strange to think that…but yes…that was my impression ;) )

We went to this really cool area called Distillery District. I loved the brick buildings- I want to own one :)

Lot’s of fun stores there too

Marilyn was made out of bobbins and Bob out of Rubik’s Cubes.

 

 

We took the ferry to Center Island- wonderful there and spent a couple of hours walking on the island enjoying the weather and coolness on the lake.

On Friday Barb, the wonderful owner of  Bizzy B’s took me to the CN-Tower.

Barb and Toni are the coolest and warm-hearted store owners ever …but that I will talk about in a different post about Canada :)


 

The view from the CN Tower was amazing and worth the wait.

I was also introduced to the Canadian dish Poutine. Very yummy and very unhealthy- LOL. Somehow it is always that way, right?

We did walk a lot and it was HOT – and I mean HOT with a huge humidity…wow…and I liked it ;) I am a summer person- I do miss real summers in Hamburg.

I will show the pictures of the workshops and talk more about the trip soon.

    So Nat, how would you re-purpose that car? A scrapbook storage item?
    My latest trip was to Washington, DC and really I got more than my share of McDonald’s. But we did have some yummy tofu pad thai in Chinatown.

    I loved Toronto too when I visited…we did many of the same things you did…CN Tower, the ferry to the Island, the Poutine. I thought my husband was going to immigrate when he found that Poutine was on the menu at Costco. That man would eat an old shoe if it was covered in gray.

    Loving the photos. So glad you had an ace time across the pond and how fun that you got to meet Bettina!
    Have to say though that the Poutine do not look appetising…I thought it was maple syrup and candy on top of them which would have freaked me out even more…hahahah

    I love Toronto especially the Distillery District. The only thing I do not like is heat and humidity so go in the fall. Next time you go you need to walk Queen Street so much to see.
