Special Feature: Interview with Catherine Matthews Scanlon

Catherine Matthews Scanlon‘s book “Sewing on paper” will hit the bookshelves next week and I’m looking forward to it.

Cat , I know you for some time now but would you like to tell something about your art-life yourself?

I always had some creative business up my sleeve, and I think I’ve tried everything there is to try – except metal art…..which is on my list to do one day when I am older and grayer!! LOL. I recently found a piece of art I created in high school – a fabric collage painted with procion dyes and, yup sewing machine quilting. I was surprised and had totally forgotten about it. I love sewing – and even though I don’t make my own clothes I’ve tried, but they just never come as good as what you can find at TJ Maxx (love that store). For a long while I was into watercolor painting, I even won a first place award in a competition amongst some very talented artists. My first love has always been photography. In high school I spent many hours in the dark room developing my own photographs and being creative with photography. That love has always stayed with me – and a natural progression to scrapbooking has taken its course.

My artful journey has been amazing, though I don’t think it would be quite as fruitful to me if it hadn’t been for my Father In Law giving me the confidence to start my own website and market my graphic and web design talents. He encouraged me – and empowered me that I could stay at home with my infant son and create art and make a living.
My first published piece was in Creating Keepsakes magazine eons ago.

Where is the book available other than amazon?

You can find it at Barnes & Noble, MSN Shopping and even my local bookstore has them on order – which was a total jump for joy moment for me. I’ve talked to Absolutely Everything an awesome scrapbook store in Topsfield, Massachusetts that’s going to have them (and I’ll be teaching there on February 10th) – and I’ll be ordering a small number if anyone wants a signed copy while supplies last, email me at luvlife@gwi.net. Paypal only.

What can you tell us about the book? Was kannst Du uns über das Buch erzählen?

Sewing on Paper is a fun hardcover book that talks about including all types of stitching on all types of paper projects using paper, ribbons, fabric and other fun materials. I have included diagrams to show how to create the stitches and tips on using a sewing machine. This is not only about scrapbooking – the projects are mostly photography based but several have none. It’s just a creative way to stitch on paper. The feedback I’ve gotten so far is very positive!

Is it suitable for beginners? Ist Dein Buch für Anfänger geeignet?

I think a beginner Scrapbooker but experienced stitcher would be able to handle the techniques in this book – as sewing on paper is similar to fabric – and the transition is an easy one to make. If a beginner scrapbooker AND stitcher were to pick up this book there may be a bit of a learning curve – but with patience and perserverance they could easily be overcome.

Is it necessary to have a machine or are you talking about handstitching too?

I’ve made it suitable for all types of stitchers to be able to use this book with diagrams on popular hand stitching techniques and tips on successful maching stitching. Machine stitching is much less time consuming than hand-stitching – but both techniques are equally as fun to do.

How did you discover your love for sewing on papers?

I took a fabric Collage class with Susan Carlson and learned a cool layering technique to use with fabric and then the same summer I was in the Scraps Ahoy contest in 2003 or 2004 (can’t remember) and was trying to come up with a unique way to present one of my projects. I created a cool iron on transfer and started stitching on it the way I did my fabric collage – I just kinda went crazy with the sewing machine – and the end result was my signature Crazy Stitching technique that I use a lot. The layout “In Your Eyes” shows how I mix straight stitching with zig zag stitching and nothing is straight – just kinda funky. I love the way it looks – as it shows a little bit about my funky side. I’ve seen the Crazy Stitching done a lot and on some on-line galleries I frequent so I think it’s been a hit!

How long did it take for you to get all those layouts and projects in the book together and write it?

Oh my Gosh – it seemed like forever! Chapelle discovered me in Atlanta while I was demonstrating for EK Success and asked me to set up a meeting with them on my lunch break….I got the signed contracts in may and I started THINKING about on it in May, 2005. I think I actually started working creatively at the beginning of July and finished on October 2006. I celebrated by going to Vegas for Memory Trends with my friends at ScrapMuse!! I made 60 projects for the book – 20 for each deadline – spread 1 month apart. I was so zapped creatively I wasn’t able to create another thing for like MONTHS it seemed when I was done with it. But, that hasn’t lasted long as I am again working with Chapelle on another little book. Totally different from Sewing on Paper – not a stretch for me but I am having fun with it!

Many people are anxious to sew on their Layouts – are there any tips or suggestions you have for them?

My two top suggestions are when you change the thread – whether it be bobbin thread or top thread – ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS do a test run of stitching on scrap paper to make sure the machine is threaded correctly, the tension is set to the right spot and use adhesive in spots where you won’t be stitching with the sewing machine. The adhesive gets on the needle and can gum things up…(do as I say not as I do…..right ??)

Is there anything you would like to add? Gibt es irgendetwas, was Du noch hinzufügen möchtest?

One of the things I like about creating and sharing my work and ideas with others is seeing the light bulb come on and how they are inspired by the ideas – and how they change them to make it a unique and creative piece entirely their own. It’s so wonderful to share, and I hope that I’ve been able to share my ideas and techniques with so many people. I am happy to answer any questions via email if there are any!

Cat – thanks so much for your time and the interview – it was really interesting and I’m looking even more forward to read your book!

Nat – again a great & interesting interview …!!! I had already read about the Book @ Scrapmuse and I really can’t wait to get a copy of it … I LOVE to sew on my Layouts – even tough I’m not doing it very often – since I always have problems with my sewing-machine (as long as the yarn is in, working & where it’s supposed to be it’s fun – but when it’s stuck in the machine somewhere or I have to replace it … I suck when it comes to this point *lol*)!
