Holiday Market in Jersey City, NJ – Dec. 6th, 2016

ProjectMarketJC

THE JERSEY CITY PROJECT celebrates its second anniversary with Project: MARKET on December 5th & 6th, 2015. I am super excited that I will be there with some of my original artwork but also my artwork as giclee prints, 2016 calendars, purses, and fridge magnets.

The heated outdoor market is located in the Historic Downtown section of Jersey City, NJ and will act as a kick-off to the holiday shopping season highlighting local, celebrating seasonal, and encouraging economic growth amongst small businesses. Melding an old-world bazaar aesthetic with elements from popular culture, the market is not unlike the downtown area where it’s located – a burgeoning neighborhood rich with history and ripe with new development.

If you are in the area – come on by and visit us – behind the City Hall just a 5 mins walk from the Grove Street Path Station! I would love to see you!

A Farewell to My Aunt Margot

Wild-Child-copy

It’s been a very sad day on Thursday when the doctor called me to tell me that my grandaunt Margot in Germany passed away at the age of 95. She was my closest relative still alive and a wonderful cheerful person who made many people in her life happy and laugh.

Margot

She was always a special role model for me and I will miss her more than anything. She was an amazing woman taking for many years care of my very sick uncle and then traveling 5 continents until she was in her early 80s . As a teenager I couldn’t wait for the postcards I would get from her from far away places like China, Australia, Swaziland or San Francisco just to name a few.

Margotcamping-copy

My aunt was a source of stories with an unbelievable stack of family photos which I still haven’t been able to go all through yet. She would tell the funniest and quirkiest stories about family members and I could never get enough listening to them. As a child I remember running into the living room and standing in front of her photo cupboard begging her to take some new photos out and start story telling. We had a very special relationship and when she asked me when I was pretty young, if I would be her care taker when she wouldn’t be able to handle her matters anymore, I happily said yes. It bonded us even more over the years.

Even though I will miss her a lot and it weighs hard on me that I wasn’t with her when she passed on thursday, I know in my heart that she had a really wonderful and fullfilled life and that it was for the best for her as the last couple days were showing that she would probably remain in a terrible state after she suffered another stroke. I was on the brim to fly to Germany any moment, but the doctors had assured me there was no need to come, and that she would be alright.  I am glad at least, that I was able to see her one last time awake and laughing  and talking for her 95th birthday in December and I will cherish this memory.

Margot3

For some this might be a weird and very private post and I admit that I wasn’t sure if I should post about it…and to be honest I wasn’t even sure if I could write about it. But I felt that since I have shared so many stories, artwork and layouts regarding my aunt ever since I started blogging in 2006, that it was appropriate to let my long term readers know. Thank you for letting me share all these years our special relationship – and as I have said on Thursday to a lot of my friends:

Do me a favor today: hug a close relative today or call them and tell them how much you love them!

I’m so sorry for your loss. But so happy that you have shared your aunt with us. Since I just found you with the CJS course, this is the first I have heard about your aunt Margot. Now I will go back and read more about her…she seems like a woman ahead of her time, someone I would have been honored to know. She will always be with you, a part of you. Hugs to you, and thank you for sharing your dear aunt with us.

Although we all know this day will come, we are NEVER prepared. I am sorry for your loss Natalie and knowing how close you were, it’s a more than tough time for you. My thoughts and prayer are with you. The times you had to spend with your aunt and the photo’s you now have are truly amazing memories to have resurface when you need them. By the sounds of things, she had an amazing life, she will be soaring with the eagles now and pitching a tent somewhere to begin another adventure.
    Big hug to you Natalie

Around The World Blog Hop

Last week my wonderful and creative friend Joe Rotella (who also takes care of me at CHA and sees to that I am actually eating my lunch there – and that EVERY year- LOL) invited me to join an Around the World Blog Hop  and so I will answer 4 questions he left me with :)

1. What are you working on right now?

mmmhh – LOL. I am working on a couple projects at the moment which I cannot really talk about …they are all making me super excited …and I cannot wait to share with you :) But …besides that…I have on my desk right now something I prepared and tested for a project I planned to do tonight at a class I am taking at the Museum of Modern Art.

NatKalbach_BlogHop01

I created a face stencil – hand drawn and then used Julie’s Scan N Cut Machine. I will use it tonight to imitate my version of a Roy Lichtenstein copy…well…lol- let’s see ;)

2. How does my work differ from offers?

Oh Brother….what a question – LOL. I think my main difference is that I totally dive into my favorite art media and try to understand every single bit of them to make them my friends and to communicate with them during my creating part. Now that makes me sound like a weird person…but then on the other hand…here you go…I am weird ;)

NatKalbach_NotABattle02

3. Why do I create?

It sounds cliche, I know- but because I have to. It wasn’t always that way but creating art made me a more complete person.

NatKalbach_BlogHop02

I am calmer and more relaxed and happier when I created art. I get cranky when I have days where I cannot create – actually I am a bit cranky right now because a lot of the things I am working on right now have to be done at the computer.

4. How does my creative process work?

It starts with a slight idea and the urge to get started. Then I start creating. I do not let the picture in my head ruin my creating flow …I let the happenings guide me – going back and forth between control and happy accidents. It is a long process but I love it. Here is a piece that I am doing it with right now – it is not finished yet.

NatKalbach_BlogHop03

Of course I should keep the around the world blog hop- chain going…but because I totally forgot about it and I stink…I am probably the bad person who interrupts the chain. I am also just a human being…But maybe the two I list right here will pick it up – in any event their blogs are fun to check out :)

I always love to see what Marsha in the Netherlands is up to and as we are already in the Netherlands…also my friend Birgit Koopsen :)

And with this…I am off …I told you I was cranky, right? I gotta create at least for a couple minutes now – LOL.

Have a gorgeous day
