Special Feature: Interview mit Elsie Flannigan

I’m so thrilled to say Hello to the girl whose blog and work brightens my day every morning: Elsie Flannigan!

Elsie lives in Springfield, Missouri, is married to T.J. and has an adorable pug named Cocoa.
Elsie is a contributor to Creating Keepsakes Magazine, the Book ScrapCity as well as to The Me Book. Her own Book 52 Scrapbooking Challenges will be out in July and she also designed her own Stamps and Fonts. On top of that, Elsie is a Design Team Member of KI-Memories, a part of the Art Group Red Velvet and a Garden Girl for Two Peas in a Bucket.

Elsie, your work is admired by a lot of scrappers overseas, so let me ask you some questions:

You started scrapbooking only two years ago. What did you think about Scrapbooking when you first heard about it?
I used to think it was pretty cheesy. I didn’t get into it until I saw some idea books (Designing with Words and Designing with Photos) that had a more organic, art-based style to them! :-) At that point I was addicted!


What did you do before Scrapbooking became your main profession?
I was a wedding photographer. I was very stressed out, so I feel like this is a huge blessing! I love my job now!!! :-)

How did Scrapbooking change your life and do you like it?
Yes! I love it! Scrapbooking has changed my life in so many ways! I love that it makes me more aware of the world I live in. It makes me appreciate details more and it makes me so excited to move forward to the future! It is a very fulfilling hobby!

Elsie, would you show us your very first Layout?
My first layout (called Bridal Portraits) will be featured in the CK Annual Idea Book this year! :-) I am so excited!

You are part of the art group Red Velvet – was that before you started scrapbooking? And what can you tell us about Red Velvet?
Yes! We had Red Velvet before I started scrapbooking! It is the most fulfilling thing I have ever done in my whole life! It is for girls our age, to inspire them and give them courage to create art and be real! :-)

Your Blog is called A Beautiful Mess, is there a story behind this name?
It is from an old album by Sixpence None the Richer. I love the name because I feel that it really describes my life. It is very messy, and very wonderful!

Can you tell us something about your new book 52 Scrapbooking Challenges?
Well, there is a challenge for every week of the year! I am so excited about that! They are fun challenges that are meant for anyone from a beginner to a very advanced scrapper! I will be doing these challenges on my blog also! :-)

I know you have been asked many times how much time you need for a Layout or where you get your inspirations from. So I skip that question and ask what makes Elsie tick?
What makes me tick? I love this question! Um- I love everyday life. I love it when I wake up and have bed hair. I love getting a red tea with honey and reading magazines at the bookstore. I love it when my puppy plays with me. I love creating something and then waking up the next morning and still loving it! All these things and more are what makes life good! :-)

Elsie, what, scrapbooking-related, is your proudest accomplishment?
I am very proud to be a Garden Girl for Two Peas in a Bucket! I am also thrilled about my new book for CK! :-)

What is your favorite technique or material you use right now besides ribbon and buttons?
Paint! I love paint! I love how messy it is!

What do you think is becoming a new trend?
Well, this is different for everyone- we all connect with different things. I am really into stars and hand stitching right now! :-)

My husband used to call me this! I love it!

Bling-Bling Baby: Sparkle!

Hier mal eine ganz andere Variante, Vicki hat mich an diese Technik, die vor Monaten mal Teil des ScrapMuse Kits war, erinnert!

Bei diesem Layout habe ich mit Stencil Paste gearbeitet und glitzerndes Embossing Powder hinzugefügt.
Hierzu benötigt man ein Behältnis zum Anmischen, ein Stück Cardstock (Papier reißt leicht ein und wellt sich, da die Masse feucht ist), glitzerndes Embossing Powder, Kreppband und eine Schablone mit dem Muster seiner Wahl sowie einen Spachtel.

Mit dem Spachtel entnimmt man etwas Paste, fügt ein wenig von dem Embossing Powder hinzu und vermischt das ganze in dem Behältnis. Vorsichtig mischen- sonst seht Ihr hinterher wie Lametta aus ;-)

Die Schablone mit Kreppband leicht auf dem Papier befestigen. Sodann mit dem Spachtel eine gleichmäßige Schicht über die Schablone auftragen. Je mehr desto plastischer das Ergebnis am Ende – paßt übrigens noch hervorragend in eine Schutzhülle, wenn man denn eine hat ;-)

Nicht zu lange warten und die Schablone vorsichtig abziehen

Zunächst kann man das Geglitzer nicht sehen – das tritt erst zum Vorschein, nachdem man das Ganze ca. 3-4 Stunden hat trocknen lassen.

Die Schablone, das Behältnis und den Spachtel umgehend mit lauwarmen Wasser und Spüli säubern. Das Zeug trocknet fix und wird steinhart!
Im Detail sieht das zum Schluß so aus:

    Hier in Deutschland heißt das Zeug, wie Andrea mir sagte, Schablonier-Paste. Wenn ich mich richig erinnere, dann gab es welche bei Jerwitz – Künstlerbedarf im Kleinen Schäferkamp. Gibt es aber sicherlich auch in jedem Bastelladen.

    Die Schablonen sind ebenfalls von Stencil Ease – sie sind aus Plastik. Ich bin mir sicher, diese gibt es hier auch in jedem größeren Bastelladen. Vielleicht hat Christiane ja noch Tipps – Du hast doch sowas auch im Schrank ;-)

Bling-Bling Baby: Glitter

Obwohl mir heute mein Mojo fehlt und ich das LO echt verhunzt habe – egal hier ist es…es geht ja um die Anregung!

Bei dem Titel und dem Herzen habe ich goldenes Glitter in Klebstoff eingemischt und dann aufgetragen. Wenn der Klebstoff klar getrocknet ist, kommt der Glitter richtig zur Geltung.

Bling-Bling Baby: Die drei Fragezeichen???

Vor dem eigentlichen Eintrag heute, möchte ich drei in den Kommentaren aufgeworfene Fragen beantworten:

Barbara hat gefragt, ob ich überhaupt jemals schlafe.
:-) Oh ja – nur leider nicht mehr so lange, weil sich mein Hirn seit geraumer Zeit ausschließlich mit dem Thema Scrappen beschäftigt. Das ist etwas anstrengend und das Schlafdefizit macht sich leider auch bemerkbar.

Britta hat zunächst gefragt, wie ich bei dem “Emma Krabbe”-Layout die Beads befestigt habe.
Einfach mit weißem, klarklebendem Kleber, meiner heißt Tacky Glue und tacky ist der auch im wahrsten Sinne des Wortes. Er hing natürlich teilweise eher an allen anderen Orten als an den Beads. Man darf das Layout während der Klebstoff trocknet nicht bewegen, damit die Beads nicht verrutschen. Die Zwischenräume zwischen den Beads habe ich übrigens mit Liquid Pearls gezogen.

Britta hat weiter gefragt, ob man für das Embossing und Stempeln eine Grundausstattung braucht.
Ich gebe sofort erstmal zu, daß mein Wissen über das Stempeln SEHR begrenzt ist. Für normale Motive jedoch reicht ja ein Stempel und ein Stempelkissen, sowie etwas zum Reinigen der Stempel – ich nehme zumeist ein Baby-Feuchttuch (ohne Alkohol).
Für das Embossing benötigt man dann zusätzlich Embossing Powder oder aber Pigment Stempelfarbe, sowie einen Bastel-Heißluftfön oder einen Toaster.
Wer der Stempelfrage noch etwas hinzufügen möchte, ist herzlich willkommen zu schreiben!!!

    ich kann nichts konstruktives beitragen, wollte nur mal schreiben, dass in meinem hirn im moment irgendwie auch kaum platz für andere dinge ausser scrappen ist. das mal ein hobby so extrem von mir besitz ergreift hätte ich nicht gedacht. umso schöner finde ich deinen blog, in dem du immer absolut geniale ideen mit uns teilst, danke!!!

Bling-Bling Baby: Razzle Dazzle

Razzle-Dazzle – cooles Wort!!! Bei dem nachfolgendem LO habe ich ein rot glitzerndes Embossing Powder mit dem Namen: Red Razzle Dazzle Embossing Powder von Funstamps benutzt:

Für den Glitzer-Rand habe ich zunächst mit einem Versa Mark Watermark-Stempelkissen das Motiv aufgestempelt, dann das Embossing Pulver drüber geschüttet bis das klebrige Motive bedeckt war. Das überschüssige Pulver aufgesammelt und wieder dem Behälter zugeführt. Sodann das Pulver vorsichtig mit einem Bastel-Heißluftfön zum Schmelzen gebracht. Fertig!

    An das Stempeln habe ich mich bisher noch nicht so rangetraut- geschweige deann, an das Embossen. Ich schätze, so eine kleine Grundausstattung ist dafür schon von Nöten, oder?

Bling-Bling Baby: Beads

Außer Glitzer- und Funkel-Akzenten ist ja derzeit auch das sogenannte “Doodling” in. Bei diesem Layout, das meine Ur-Ur-Großmutter zeigt, habe ich mal beide Trends vereinigt ;-) Also erst rumgekritzelt und dann Beads draufgeklebt.

Bling-Bling Baby: Rhinestones

Ein großr Trend ist zur Zeit alles was glitzert und funkelt. Eigentlich nicht mein Ding aber ich ertappe mich dabei, daß ich Rhinestones, Beads, Glitzer-Klebstoff o.ä. immer häufiger verwende und es sehr schön finde. Es peppt die Seiten richtig auf.

Bei diesem Layout habe ich Rhinestones – unechte Diamanten – benutzt. Fand ich recht passend für ein Layout zur Diamantenen Hochzeit meiner Urgroßeltern.

Rhinestones gibt es zum Beispiel von HeidiSwapp und MakingMemories. Es gibt sie in verschiedenen Formen und Farben. Man kann mit ihnen auch Rahmen um ein Bild gestalten – die Möglichkeiten sie zu verwenden sind vielfältig.

Diese Woche gibt es ein paar Inspirationen zum Thema Bling-Bling von mir und für die, die mögen einen kleinen Wettbewerb. Emailt mir Eure Layouts oder Karten mit Bling-Bling bis Dienstag den 04.07.2006 und beschreibt kurz, was Ihr gemacht habt. Die Files sollten im jpeg.-Format sein. Diese Layouts/Karten werden dann nächste Woche von mir hochgeladen. Das Layout bzw. die Karte mit dem besten Bling-Feeling wird ausgezeichnet. Special Feature: Interview mit Vicki Chrisman

Today I’m very happy to welcome my wonderful and talented friend Vicki Chrisman.

Vicki lives in North Bend, Nebraska. She is married and the mother of two boys, both in college now.
Vicki is a Design Team (DT) Member of the magazine Scrapbook Answers as well as for ScrapMuse, Crafty Secrets Heartwarming Vintage and Fancy Pants Designs.

Vicki, I’m just imagining we are sitting here and we are having a cup of coffee together as this is what I would really like to do. Let me ask you some questions:

How long have you been scrapping? How did you get into the hobby? And how would you describe your style?

I’ve been scrapping for about 12 years now. I’ve always loved to create, even as a child, so when I first heard about scrapbooking I couldn’t wait to give it a try. I didn’t take a class, I just started. I did it the way I wanted, and had fun doing it. I look back on some of those layouts now, and laugh, but at the time, I was having great fun!

I don’t know that I have a specific style, I love the idea of being able to do whatever strikes me at that moment. Heritage, and Shabby have always been favorites, there is something about that warm vintage look that I just love. I also love quirky little details, and lots of contrast!

What did you do before Scrapbooking became your main profession?

The most important job I’ve ever had, of course, is being a mom, but before I started doing this full time from home, I worked at a scrapbooking and stamp store, and instructed classes. Before that I worked for 10 years as an Early Childhood Development Para professional for the school system.

Vicki, I saw once your first layout. Would you like to show it again?

This is one of those I can go back and laugh about. But I’m still glad I have these, and that I have the photos and information documented.

Would you also show us one of your latest layouts, just for the contrast and because I love your style!

Sure. I’m loving the new Fancy Pants Designs papers and rubons. Here’s one done with the “Chi Chi” line.

Vicki, you are working for so many Design Teams. Could you tell us what your day is like? How do you organize it and how you can be so productive?

It’s always busier before trade shows of course. The companys need layout samples done with the new products, for displays at the shows. Each Design Team position has a certain number of project assignments due each month, so that is fairly easy to plan ahead for.

Scrapbook Answers Magazine editors contact you with assignments, which you can read over and accept or decline. Sometimes things seem to come all at once, and it can be a bit overwhelming, but I am so thankful for the work.

Often times I think being on the different teams really helps me. For instance, working with the Scrap Muse kits each month gives me the opportunity to try out the newest cool products, which in turn helps me when creating for the Scrapbook Answers magazine. Just one example is texture paste! I may have never tried it, had it not been in our Scrap Muse DT kits. I tried it and loved it. I used it on many of the mini albums in the Heartwarming Vintage books and was asked to do a step-by-step feature for the Scrapbook Answers magazine using it.
Sometimes it all works together really well!

When things do slow down a bit, it’s a good time to work on things like submitting, or to work on something JUST FOR FUN, JUST FOR YOURSELF, without rules!

Where do you get your inspirations?

Oh, all you have to do, is to look around. Inspiration is everywhere…. nature, music, ads, tv, clothing, color, etc. Sometimes I’m just inspired by the products themselves. I really like to try out new techniques and use different mediums. I love being inspired by others people work. Just looking at other peoples’ take on things gets my creative juices flowing.

Vicki, what, scrapbooking related, is your proudest accomplishment?

I gave this question alot of thought, and I think there are three things that I would have to say have definetly put a huge smile on my face this past year. I am very proud of the two books I worked on with Sandy Redburn and Cindy VanKoll for Crafty Secrets Heartwarming Vintage (Get Round with Heartwarming Vintage and Get Creative with Heartwarming Vintage).

I was thrilled to have gotten the cover of the Dec/Jan/Feb 2006 issue of Paper ARTS.

And I was honored to have been choosen as one of the “2006 Scrapbook Answers Magazine” Designs Team Members.

I’m wondering how it works with Scrapbook Answers. It is a very technique driven magazine with lot’s of how-to features. Do they give you a technique and then you work on tips or layouts for this feature in the magazine, or are you come up with an idea yourself?

Well, this can be done either way. If you have an idea, you can propose that idea to them, and they may accept it for a place in an upcoming issue where it would appropriate fit. Or they could either put out a general call to the entire Design Team for something they are looking for, or one of the editors may contact you personally and ask if you would be interested in working on something, using a specific technique or product.

What is your favorite technique right now?

I am still loving stitching alot, and live to doodle!

What do you think is becoming a trend in the future or what would you like to see becoming a trend?

Oh, of course I see “freestyle” as huge, and I’m thrilled about it! I’m just glad to see people having fun, and being able to do what they want to do. Being creative! No right or wrong. I think we are going to see people become more and more creative, and less and less inhibited. I think this also let people find fun and creative ways to use up older supplies, by
using them in new and interesting ways.
