Stroll Through The Hood

Stroll Through the Hood – August 2016

NathalieKalbach_Strollhood_Logo

Time for a Stroll Through the Hood . Strolls through my hood get me out of my studio, they help me unstuck and often I get inspired by what I see and to get new ideas to create something.

Strollaug_01

I cannot get enough of all the beautiful and different views Jersey City offers from the water front!

Strollaug_02

Our neighbor hood bakery not only makes really yummy bread, they also love to use stencils on the bread- and this one: LOVE!!!!

Strollaug_03

Look at this stink eye …he is not interested in any strolls through the hood …he rather spends his whole day exactly on that chair sleeping!

Strollaug_04

I love the iron work we have downtown in some areas around trees.

Stroll02

I have walked past this alley way a million times and never noticed it- and when I went through I found this mural.

Stroll01

The biggest Sunflowers I have ever bought at a farmers market – I had to carry them over my shoulder like a log and my arms were aching- but for 8Bucks they are like having the sun four times in your living room – plus, sunflowers are my favorite flowers .

Hope you liked the little stroll through the hood- until the next time . Have a gorgeous day

My Own Drum – Gwen Lafleur

CS June My Own Drum

Happy Tuesday! It’s time for my Creative Squad to share a project with you with this month’s new theme: “My Own Drum”. Throughout the month of June, the team will use my new Fashion Dame Rubber Stamp Set to interpret the theme. This theme is all about inspiration, creativity, and personal expression. I asked my squad to create something that celebrates the power of individuality. March to the beat of your own Mixed Media drum this month!

We are kicking off with an art journal page from Gwen Lafleur. This is a super inspiring reminder to us all to do what we love, even if it means covering stuff up :)

—————————————————————————————————

Gwen June Headshot

This month’s theme, “my own drum” was perfect for me, and lots of fun to work with! I tend to be a bit of a loner – I’ll go off on my own or join up with tour groups where I don’t know anyone else and go on crazy, exotic adventures. I’m also usually one that follows what I like rather than what’s trendy in clothes (even as an 80s child in elementary school, I knew parachute pants weren’t a good idea for me. LOL.) I’m the same with music, food, and especially with my art! Don’t get me wrong… I love to see what new things other people are doing and what tools and techniques are cool. That’s how we learn, right? But more and more, it’s important for me to take whatever I learn and go in my own direction as much as possible; to be true to myself in my work, even if no one else likes it.

My-Own-Drum-Art-Journal-Page---Final---Gwen-Lafleur

For this month’s project I took those thoughts and used them to create this art journal page. I used the Fashion Dame stamp set and created three silhouettes as my focal point – in my mind, they’re three different aspects of me. There’s a bit of a double meaning to the color and pattern on this page… first, something I like to do a lot in my work that really bothers some people is to cover things up. Second, I love the idea of the inside of the silhouettes being full of pattern and bright colors while the outside is extremely subdued. I think that speaks a lot to my own personality (and the rich inner life of an introvert. Ha!)

My-Own-Drum-Art-Journal-Page---Steps-1-4---Gwen-Lafleur

To make this page, I started out by stamping with the Fashion Dame stamp set – I did different combinations of the body and clothes to get the three silhouettes. I just stamped them on copy paper and then cut them out. Next, I prepared my background. I gesso’d and painted, then I collaged on pieces from a sewing pattern (I couldn’t resist the tie to fashion!) I did some stenciling on top with some of Nathalie’s StencilGirl stencils. Once I had a nice hot mess of color and pattern, I took my three silhouettes and adhered them securely with repositionable adhesive. Next is the part that upsets some people… I took some Payne’s Gray paint and mixed it with satin glazing medium, then proceeded to paint over the entire page.

My-Own-Drum-Art-Journal-Page---Steps-5-6---Gwen-Lafleur

For the next step, I use baby wipes to push back a little of the wet paint. I wanted most of the page to be at least somewhat veiled with the darker color, especially near the silhouettes. Then I peeled off the masks / silhouettes (do this while the paint is still wet so it doesn’t seal down the edges of the mask.) I love the contrast of the areas that were masked off versus the dark background with just hints of pattern and color showing through.

My Own Drum Art Journal Page - Final 800x800 - Gwen Lafleur

To finish it off, I took a fine line painting pen and filled the well with white acrylic ink. I used this to add the journaling around the silhouettes and to put a border on the page. I added the dots with a white paint pen, then used red fluid acrylic paint mixed with airbrush medium in a fine line applicator to sprinkle some dots around the page. Voila! A finished art journal page that shows how I like to march to my own drum both in my art and in life.

—————————————————————————————————

I think it is so cool that Gwen followed her instincts with the dark overlay – this is what the  theme is all about and the results are gorgeous.

Besides the supplies listed below (some are affiliate links), Gwen also used a vintage sewing pattern and Hermafix temporary dot adhesive:

Maybe you will even play along with us -I would love to see how you interpret our monthly themes. Email me how you used my stencils and stamps with the theme and email me an image – I would love to share your projects in my next “n*Spiration From Around the Globe“!

See you next Tuesday for another project from the Creative Squad!

Inspired by New South Wales, Australia

KalbachNSWcollage

After our time in Melbourne we went on a road trip and drove about ten hours to Sydney which is located in New South Wales  which is a pretty big state…bigger than Texas, sorry Texas ;)  And on this long long ride the “Wombat” Signs here and there were quite the most exciting view …if you do not count the radio news that a dingo tried to steal a baby in the Western Territory (and that is no joke- it happened! )

KalbachNSW01

I loved those road signs.

KalbachNSW02

And of course when you spend time in Sydney you have to see the opera house -which btw- several years ago when I was in Sydney before, I visited for a concert. Last row seats – amazing sound- I can totally recommend this!!!

KalbachNSW03

We visited to the Botanical Garden which I love so much. I wanted to show Julie the Flying Foxes that I had seen there a couple years ago, but they were gone. I was told that they were not good for the trees and plants in the garden and were therefore relocated. Here is the blog post with a photo from several years ago . I think Julie was kind of relieved ;)

KalbachNSW04

KalbachNSW05

Awesome flower bud sculpture

KalbachNSW06

KalbachNSW07

And more giant trees – where is Julie?

KalbachNSW08

KalbachNSW09

This was the entrance to our apartment in Sydney- we referred to it as the jungle. Unfortunately it was so humid and full of mold in the apartment that it felt a bit like a jungle too. I wasn’t sad when we left since I have a terrible mold allergy and I could not stand being in the place for a long time. Too bad- it was a beautiful place.

KalbachNSW10

So was this house – ohhh – I so want a house that is painted orange and has a turquoise iron work balcony – I mean…helloooo – this is beautiful!

KalbachNSW11

Oh wait …who are those people again …yep …goof balls ;)

KalbachNSW12

No idea what is growing out of my head but I love the picture of the two of us. We were just sitting there, relaxing and chatting and enjoying some warm sun rays.

KalbachNSW13

On our way to Berkeley Vale where we taught our second workshop at Darkroom Door, we stopped at a reptile zoo.

KalbachNSW14

These little critters sleeping in the sun spreading out their legs (lol- it makes me laugh) are Echidnas – they are ant eaters and the only living mammals that lay eggs.

KalbachNSW15

ANNDNNNDDDDDD – Squealllll – a Wallaby – – ohhh – yeah- I so love them – they are so cute.

KalbachNSW16

They were just hopping around with us and they were super fluffy. I know they look as if their fur is kind of scruffy but no no- they are so soft and these were very cute. BTW- do not try to touch one in the wilderness …they can get quite vicious, but these are used to people.

KalbachNSW17

And a little snoring Koala ….this didn’t look so comfortable to me but on the other hand …if you do not have anything else you even fall asleep on an economy class seat on a plane, right?

KalbachNSW18

The horror on the side of the path …oh man ….spiders big like houses- my nightmare….

KalbachNSW19

better look at the next koala.

KalbachNSW20

or at this Tasmanian Devil … yeah not quite like the one from Bugs Bunny …but …I saw one with it’s mouth open …also not one you want to touch – LOL

KalbachNSW21

This one was just passing by and ….

KalbachNSW22

Sorry- gotta go back to this little wallaby – did I tell you they were super cute?

KalbachNSW23

On our last day in Berkeley Vale, our friend Rachel took us for a little tour on the coast. It was beautiful.

KalbachNSW24

KalbachNSW25

KalbachNSW26

And because Anzac Day was coming up, there was this beautiful red poppy arrangement . Anzac Day is a national day of remembrance of all Australians and New Zealanders who served and died in war and on operational service.

KalbachNSW27

It was a wonderful time in New South Wales- the flora and fauna, the animals, the landscape and the amazing blue sky are so remarkable and inspiring, I am sure some of this will be part of my artwork in the future in one way or another.

KalbachNSW28

I hope you like this little trip :) I wish you a wonderful day!

Elephants Never Forget – Michelle Rydell

CS May Elephants Never Forget

It’s Tuesday and time for a project from my Creative Squad and this month’s theme: “Elephants Never Forget”. Throughout the month of May, the team is using my new Elephant Foam Stamp, Rubber Stamp and Stencil Set to interpret the theme. I asked them to draw from a childhood memory, and to use the elephant as a symbol of something that fascinated them as a child. And if you want to hear a little bit about me, you can read about my personal connection to elephants here (just scroll down to “WHY an elephant…”)

Today we have an art journal spread by Michelle Rydell. Michelle used the theme as a jumping off point for this colorful page.  I love her inspiring message!
—————————————————————————————————

Michelle May Headshot

When I heard the theme “Elephants never Forget,” the first thing I thought of was my daily entries in my art journal. The ones where I record little bits of my life each day, so I don’t forget them! I decided it would be fun to let Nat’s regal elephants guard my memories for the week! Here’s how I did it…

I painted my whole background with black acrylic paint, and then covered up the black with squares of bright colors. Next I stenciled the foam elephant stamp with white paint onto black cardstock – twice, and then cut them out.  You know how sometimes people wrap a thread around their finger to help them remember something? I wrapped a little crochet thread around one elephants trunk, and the other ellies leg to symbolize that! After that I pasted the two elephants onto the journal spread.

RydellElephants1

RydellElephants2

I felt like the page needed something to make the colored blocks work cohesively together; so I glazed the whole page (except for the ellies) with a thin coat of Golden’s fluorescent chartreuse paint.

RydellElephants3

I used the stencil that comes with the kit to create a border with black paint. My page was then ready to add memories as the week progressed!

RydellElephants5

Here’s how the week looks all finished. I just love my elephants parading across the bottom. I really feel like it makes the page special!

I love Michelle’s color block background and the very fun way she tied reminder bows on the elephants!  Here are the links (some are affiliate links) for the supplies Michelle used:

Inspiration from Around the Globe

This Tuesday we’re taking a break from our Creative Squad (don’t worry, they will be back next week with a new theme to play with!) to bring you some super fun projects from around the world.  As you may know, my stamps and stencil designs are available for purchase online and maybe even in your local craft store, so crafters and mixed media artists and art journalers from around the world are using them.  I am always excited to see how YOU use my products in your own projects.  I am even more excited to share some of the beautiful and creative examples of these projects with you today. Enjoy this inspiration from around the globe!

Global Inspiration Asia King Fashion Dame Card

From the UK:  I absolutely love Asia King’s use of my Fashion Dame stamp set for this mixed media panel.  Her combination of neon green, that cool Caution stamp, and my Fashion Dame really made for an image with a lot of attitude.  It goes great with my word of the year ;)

Global Inspiration Frieda O Fashion Dame

Frieda Oxenham also from the U.K. paired my Fashion Dame stamp set gal with a funky car and some great colors for a really nifty art journal page.  I love how she built up all those layers in the design to give a real sense of dimensionality.

Global Inspiration Sarah Donawerth Stampington Art Deco

Stampington Magazine based in California, featured a free project using my Art Deco Wallpaper stencil on their website and social media.  You can follow along to create this beautiful journal with a super nice textured cover!

Global Inspiration Janelle Stolfus Urban Scribble

Janelle Stollfus in Idaho created this gorgeous card using my Urban Scribble stamp set.  I love how she filled in the cityscape to make it her own.  The little touches really give it a personalized look that is so unique.

Global Inspiration Eeva Urban Scribble-2

And finally, here is Eeva from Sweden, purchasing one of my Urban Scribble Stamp sets at her local craft store!  So fun to see all of you shopping for my designs and inspiring us with your creativity :)

Join us again next Tuesday for another great project from one of our Creative Squad members!  They will be working with a new theme for April.  And in the meantime, share with me what you’ve been working on with my stamps and stencils.  I would love to feature your project in an upcoming post!

Art Stroll: Malba – The Latin American Art Museum of Buenos Aires

Art Stroll Malba Collage

It’s been a couple months after coming back from Buenos Aires, but I still would love to show you one the highlights of my trip, which was my Art Stroll through Malba the Latin American Art Museum of Buenos Aires.

Kalbach MalbaBA 23

The Malba is actually a really funky building…and someone laid an egg in the basement too ;) It is a beautiful museum – the permanent collection is small but wonderful – the running exhibitions were amazing, but are not part of this post. Let’s stroll through the permanent collection:

Kalbach MalbaBA 01

Emilio Pettoruti, La cancion del Pueblo (The Song of the People), 1927 – Oil on wood

Kalbach MalbaBA 03

I love this one – it reminds me a lot of Picasso’s Three Musicians which is from 1921- and I wonder if he saw Picasso’s painting while he was in Europe. I love the patterns and the colors -it makes me want to create my own version :)

Kalbach MalbaBA 02

Joaquin Torres-Garcia, Calle de Nueva York (Street of New York) , 1920

MoMA has an exhibition with Torres-Garcia right now- which I will post about later – but I was happy to see more of his work after seeing these pieces in Buenos Aires.

Kalbach MalbaBA 05

Joaquin Torres-Garcia, Compositon symetrique universelle en blanc et noir (Universal Symmetric Composition in Black and White), 1931

Isn’t this gorgeous? I love it – and it would be so much fun to do an art journal page in this style.

Kalbach MalbaBA 04

Luis Ortiz Monasterio, El espiritu de la rey, 1933 – this bronze sculpture reminds me a bit of Fernand Leger’s Paintings –  I love it!

Kalbach MalbaBA 06

Frida Kahlo, Self Portrait with Monkey and Parrot, 1942

Kalbach MalbaBA 07

Maria Martins, O Impossivel (The Impossible9, 1945 “It is nearly impossible to make people understand each other,”

I found this one a bit disturbing and yes aggressive but also faszinating and for some reason it made me think of Magritte’s “The Lovers” – just evoking different feelings.

Kalbach MalbaBA 08

Antonio Berni, Manifestacion (Public Demonstration), 1934 – Egg Tempera on Burlap

In the thirties art and politics were often a topic by artists. Artists engaged in collective work, political activism and debates. Images of rural and urban workers, as well as figures protesting or engaged in traditional celebrations, began to appear in often monumental pictorial works. The artwork made use of materials that gave artistic expression a social  dimension. Burlap from a potato sack or tempera paint of the sort used murals were often chosen by politicized artist.

Kalbach MalbaBA 09

Maria Freire, Sudamerica N10, 1958

I love those polygonal forms – pretty amazing pattern.

Kalbach MalbaBA 10

Lidy Prati, Serial Composition, 1948 (1946)

Kalbach MalbaBA 11

Franz Krajcberg, Sin Titulo (Untitled), 1961 – burnt colored paper pulp on canvas

Kalbach MalbaBA 12

I could not stop looking at this- I wanted to touch it..but I didn’t ;) – the texture – swoon!!!

Kalbach MalbaBA 13

Kenneth Kemble, Suburban Landscape in Memoriam B.N., 1958  – Rusty metal sheet, oil and misc. on hardboard.

Kalbach MalbaBA 14

I loved seeing all the artwork with supplies that were around and on hand.

Kalbach MalbaBA 15

Luis Felipe Noe, Dos mujeres (Two Women) 1963 – Oil and Collage on Canvas

NatKalbachmalba

Kalbach MalbaBA 16

Jorge De La Vega, Pruebe de nuevo (Try Again), 1963 – Oil, paper, glued fabric, and glass on canvas

Kalbach MalbaBA 17

this is a rub off from the face on the right – so fascinating.

Kalbach MalbaBA 18

Jorge De La Vega, El dia ilustrisimo (The Illustrious Day), 1965 – Oil, glued canvases, frottage with charcoal on cut-out canvas, synthetic plaster, jewelry, mirrors, glass and plastic on canvas.

Kalbach MalbaBA 20

Nicolas Garcia Uriburu, Pastel on 4 Photographs, 1970

Beautiful Photo Alteration – I love to alter photos and of course the urban theme is dear to my heart.

Kalbach MalbaBA 19

And now- I had to include this although it wasn’t in the permanent collection. Hello giant rubber stamp!!!!!

Kalbach MalbaBA 21

Eduardo Navarro, The Mechanics of  the Alphabet, 2015

Kalbach MalbaBA 22

It was a great museums visit- and if you ever go to Buenos Aires, definitely put Malba on your list.

What caught my attention was that there was actually quite some artwork by women- making it yet the more prominent how very few women are present in a lot of Museums throughout the world- naming MoMA for example – and it is not as if women in the 20s, 30s, 40s or 50s of the last century didn’t do wonderful and unique artwork.

The other fact that caught my eye was the variety of supplies that were used – my Mixed Media heart was beating a couple beats faster …in a happy way.

I hope you enjoyed this little art stroll! Which of the pieces I showed did you find most inspiring?

Inspired by… The La Recoleta Cemetery in Buenos Aires

NatKalbachBAC01

It might sound weird to have a title that indicates that one was inspired by a cemetery, but if you have ever been to La Recoleta Cemetery, a serene and peaceful, as well as beautiful resting place in the middle of a hustling and bustling city of Buenos Aires, I think you agree with me. I was intrigued by the beauty of the mausoleums, the decay, the symbols, the shapes and forms, the doors, the signs, the light, the flowers at places you would not expect flowers, the texture and more.

Sue, I loved the woman and the dog one too. She apparently got killed in an avalanche while in Switzerland and then when her dog died,he was buried next to her and they put up the statue. As for the snake like creature-I have no idea what the meaning of it is- but I am intrigued. Have a merry christmas too my friend!

Hi Nathalie! I just paid for CJS 2016 but I think I got too much discount. PayPal gave me a receipt for only $40 payment. Very nice, but I want to pay you the correct amount which I believe should be $45 with the earlybird discount. Let me know how to get you the extra $5. Thank you for doing this again. So excited that everything is downloadable this year. Thank you thank you.

I just paid with PayPal. Is there any other kind of registration? How will I know when we are starting? Will I get a supplies list ahead of time?
    Thanks, Gloria

HI Gloria, no worries, give me a couple hours to get you into the database. You won’t get lost and be able to access soon – but there was a glitch in the website, which I am fixing right now.

thank you for your patience and sorry for the website troubles!
