Sounding my barbaric YAWP over the rooftops of the world

My last trip going to Toronto, Chicago and NJ was really good for me. I came back with a lot of affirmation that things are good. I thank my friends, my family, my students and the people/manufacturers I work with. You made me happy! I was in a doubting slump – too many things have been not working out the way I dreamed off and probably also because one of my most loved relative is going through a hard time right now…which weighs heavy on me – I had this nagging feeling of “I suck” and “Are the things I’ m doing right now are leading in the right direction?”

I thought it wasn’t good to go away on the trip  – the timing was not good – but actually this whole trip came at the right time- It refueled me and gave me back power in many perspectives. I feel loved and valued by my friends and family and I feel creative and good-enough again thanks to my students in Toronto, artsy friends and the CREATE event. And this makes me stronger to be strong in a situations someone else needs me.

I started this book in Michelle Ward‘s awesome Frond Chronicles Workshop at Create. I love her way of using selfmade stencils and her beautiful way of layering. It was a wonderful class. At home I gave the book my own twist- made it my own and filled it with quotes from my favorite movie “Dead Poets Society” -because…it fits …it is what this trip was telling me :)

“Now we have all a great need for acceptance, but you must trust that your beliefs are unique, your own, even though others may think them odd or unpopular, even though the herd may go “that’s baaahaaad”. Robert Frost said “Two roads diverged in the wood and I, I took the one less traveled by, and that has made all the difference”!”

Watch the scene this is from here:

Awesome- isn’t it?

“I sound my barbaric YAWP over the rooftops of the world!”

Watch the scene this is from here:

YAWWWWWWWPPP

“I’m exercising the right not to walk!”

“I stand upon my desk to remind myself that we must constantly look at things in a different way”

“this is a battle, a war, and the casualties could be your hearts and souls”

“There’s a time for daring and there’s time for caution and a wise man understands which is called for!”

“What will your verse be?”

“No matter what anybody tells you, words and ideas can change the world!”

CARPE DIEM

“Believe in yourself. Do not abandon your convictions because it is not what others believe!”

Supplies: Watercolor Paper, Acrylic Paints, Tyvek, old Spanish Newspaper, Liquitex     Spray Paints, Liquitex Acrylic Inks, Molotow Marker, Letraset Fineliner, Sari Ribbon, Dylusions Stencil

Loving the roughness of this—Might have to take it out whenever the voice in my head tells me again that I suck  ;)

When was the last time you yelled your barbaric YAWP over the rooftops of the world?

Have a gorgeous day

Nat

Typical Northern German or…Weather Talk

A couple of days ago I showed you the amazing project by Janna Werner which was the result of our collaboration regarding Typisch Norddeutsch or in English “Typical Northern German”

I would like to share my page with you too and also my video on the process for this artjournal page.

When Janna and I thought about which theme we could choose for a fun project day together on our blogs, we realized that we both live in Northern Germany.

So what is typical Northern German for me? Well…first of all the weather…hehehehe – we are constantly saying that there is no bad weather, only bad clothing. Here is a typical summer week in Hamburg

And then also typical northern german for me is that we are for southern germans sometimes a bit cold and maybe also arrogant. Well..but on the second glance we are pretty cuddly ;)

And then …for me personally – Hamburg , my city- is pretty typical northern german – and there is a German song that kind of features all those thoughts and sentiments above in regards to Hamburg and that was my inspiration :)”City Blues” by Beginner

The song starts with the sentence:

This is Hamburg…and the sun shines….NOT (we put the not always at the end of a sentence, which cracks my mother in law in the States off…like ohhh long long sentence and then surprise ….everything is different from what you expected…NOT ;))

You can hear the song while watching how I made the page in this video

[vimeo 44299123 w=400 h=300]
BTW…did you know that Hamburg has more sun days when Munich? Pretty unbelievable ;) So hey…if you are ever in Germany – please come to Hamburg- it is a fun city, just take some warmer clothing with you ;)

Have a gorgeous day

hugs

I loved seeing the video of how you put it together :) It sounds like Northerners in Germany and Northerners in the US are seen the same way by the Southerners in each country. People from New England in particular are seen as being very cold and we sometimes say “standoffish” or rude. I always figured it’s because the weather there is cold, so you don’t have time to stand around talking to people when you’re out, because you want to get home where it’s warm and comfortable!

I enjoyed watching you make this while listening to the music. Funny to be moving to the song with the hip hop pop sound without understanding the music. We New Englanders seem to discuss the weather too…every day…too hot, too muggy, just right with a slight breeze…

The Whatevers #2 or Today

Are you ready for the second Whatevers? If you missed the what the Whatevers is all about…check it out here.

Click here to see what Cat made out of this photo and which story she tells

Click here to see what Vicki made out of this photo and which story she tells

Here is my take on it

TODAY

“Women cannot be trusted” he had shouted and ended the discussion why women should not be able to vote. She was so tired of this – maybe she should join Virginia, Mary and France to the next Suffrogette Meeting! If he would ever get done with taking the photo?

Her Name: Myrtle – Mother of Maria and Mathias

You can see how I created the background for the pages and the supplies I used in this Post: Sgraffito

added some ripped Donna Downey Prima Canvas and 7 Gypsies Tags and Tape.

And here is the photo for you:

Here is how it works if you want to play along:

  • Vicki, Cat and I have made a one-year commitment to each other and picked twelve photos with Whatevers whom we will give a story.
  • Every month – if possible always on the 15th –  each of us will do a post with an individual story that goes along for us with the same photo.
  • If you want you can play along and we will have the photo for you – just right click on it to safe it to download and show us your version of The Whatevers.
  • There is no rules to the story itself- it can be funny, sad, uplifting, breathtaking- WHATEVER
  • There is no rules on the length or the form of the story– it can be a short sentence, an essay, a poem or a soap opera – WHATEVER
  • There is no rules on the artform you choose – it can be a scrapbook layout, an altered art project, an artjournal page – WHATEVER
  • Here is a rule though: if you take the photo you have to link back to us andshow us your story.
  • These pictures are from our personal stash and are for personal use for you only! If you want to use them for a publication whether a book or magazine in print or digital form please ask for permission!
  • If you want to participate we’ll have a linky list for each Whatever Post.

Keep your Eyes on the Stars…or/and Your Feet on the Ground

Theodor Roosevelt said this…well- without the “or” in between – smart man  ;)

I had some awesome opportunities coming up this year…and sometimes they would just vanish, or they would just be not as awesome at the second glance or they would be just under ridiculous conditions or they would be just not doable. It is always a crashing experience…because from the high feeling of YEAH-double-fist-up-in-the-air comes the bad fall to reality that hurts a lot.

But ….I start to realize that it is awesome that the opportunities were even showing up…even if they weren’t really opportunities in retrospective LOL – because you know what? There will be always some opportunities coming and some will be just the right ones for me. Actually an awesome opportunity just showed up and it might be really really cool :)

With each of those shattered opportunities I learned something…I learned something about myself ….I learned what I want and what I don’t want…and that is pretty cool… Without those shattered opportunities I wouldn’t know myself that much and hey….I spent most of my time with me….hahahahah- so better know this person, don’t you think? LOL

I am not reaching for the stars. I am just reaching for mine. There is one personal star out there shining for just for me…and one just for you, and you and you!

Hope you star is shining bright for you today!

huge hugs

Nat

Dylusions Ink Sprays and the Derwent ArtBars are amazing each by themselves but put together….they make the colors SING :) A complete Supply List of what I used can be found below

On a Paint Media High

Lately I have been playing a lot in my art journal- it is the place to try new things, to don’t care, to have happy and funny accidents- careless, fun, emotional…..

I love this- it makes me happy to play with old and new stuff- trying color combinations – new techniques….my studio is my happy place- no doubt about it! :)

I might have a little yellow orange crush right now ;)

I do insane stuff- hahahha- like layering up 10 or so different paint media- so much fun. Just because I can….just because I want…just because I know how they react but I want to know more about the interaction of those media….Just because….

The above image contains: Derwent Artbars, Derwent Inktense Blocks, clear Gesso, Dylusions, Maya Mists, Liquitex Spraypains, Liquitex Heavy Body Acrylic Paint, Eco Green Crafts Artist Medium, Liquitex Inks and Perfect Pearl Mists….can you say INSANE- LOL

Having some amazing vibrant paint media helps…you gotta admit, that these here trigger creativity right from looking at them

These Liquitex Spraypaints will be available in Germany in Fall- they are AWESOME!

well…and the Liquitex Inks….HEAVEN in liquid form…truly…making me HAPPY :)

Just 10 minutes a day….such a wonderful feeling….try it :)

What are you doing lately that you makes you happy but might be insane?

——

My new Über*Media Online Workshop is here – Learn the whole Shebang about Acrylic Paints. Starts the coming monday!

wishing you a truly happy and colorful day :)

Second Floor Challenge # 3: Truth

Are you ready to take the second floor this time? If you have no clue what I am talking about- read all about it here :) The Second Floor Challange

So today is our third Second Floor Challange: Truth

Click here to see what Julie did http://balzerdesigns.typepad.com/balzer_designs/2012/04/second-floor-challenge-3-truth.html

Whatever that means to you or however it inspires you.  The prompt is simply meant to get you started.  The level of challenge you aim for is entirely internal and up to you.

Truth..yes -when Julie proposed that theme I didn’t think it would be too difficult! Yeah…right. Little did I know. Just the word truth as a start…ok…

First step for me was to get an idea at all as an inspiration as to what to do….and I googled it…nothing too new for me…nothing to inspiring…I even asked Siri and that is what she told me:

mhhh great Siri, that doesn’t help – I mean I do a lot of open statements in my work….I try to stay true to myself…I show true feelings, thoughts etc…so now what?

I started googling songs containing truth …mmhh – clearly still first floor as I did this before ;) I found this one by John Lennon

[youtube=https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aDDJeM5R4PM]

This resonated a bit with me- especially those lines:

I’m sick and tired of hearing things
From uptight, short-sighted, narrow-minded hypocrites
All I want is the truth
Just gimme some truth
I’m sick to death of seeing things
From tight-lipped, condescending, mama’s little chauvinists
All I want is the truth
Just gimme some truth now
I’ve had enough of watching scenes
Of schizophrenic, ego-centric, paranoiac, prima-donnas
All I want is the truth now
Just gimme some truth
Actually…this resonates a lot with me – absolutely the truth…I’m sick of such stuff..wether it be in politics, work life or with people that surround you sometimes.   I also found that Dark blue is the color of truth and moderation.
OK – Challenge is up – the plan was to incoporate the song and only use dark blues…
going up from light blue to dark blue —-as if digging for the truth. And doing it all in one color…was actually my walk up to the second floor- I am really not so much a monochromatic person- LOL
or maybe, I took it to the second floor via journaling ;)
I so can’t wait to see what you come up with ….
What I learned from this challenge:
  1. The moment you think you are not challenged you lost…you are challenged ;)
  2. There is no elevator to an successful page you need to take the stairs and I didn’t – this is a last minute page because I was struggling with the theme.
  3. I usually work in a way that I do the backgrounds darker and then layer them up to get lighter…I like the different way thought…Need to do this more often
  4. Monochromatic is actually pretty cool – it makes you also aware of how many shades of blue are out there.
  5. I used cheese cloth many times before but I actually really like it in the monochromatic layer on top of acrylic paint and then spraypainted – it gives a pretty cool dimension.
  6. It doesn’t help when you start thinking of what your challenge partner…aka Julie might do with this theme…just stay in your own brain, it is hard enough to get that figured out ;)
  7. Siri is as useful as a cough ;) Sorry Siri ;)

If you’d like to show off your response to this Second Floor challenge, leave a link!

 TRUTH

have a wonderful day

hugs

Nat

Heidi Swapp Memory Files – Travel Art Album

Can you imagine how stoked I was, that Heidi Swapp featured my Travel Art Album I made with her amazing new Memory Files for the ScrapArtZine Spring Issue? Between you and me…I actually almost fainted when she sent me the email asking for the pictures for her website… – and I almost fainted again when I read her sweet words about the album. I mean…Heidi..one of my idols when I started with this whole journey…

I love her products and ….shhh….I once bought an insane amount of her Heidi Swapp Chipboard Letters …ahem…and I mean INSANE – I have a whole drawer full in all colors and if you look at my projects you see them actually quite often ;)

As Heidi mentions, our style is totally different and yet- I love her collection – it makes it so easy to work with, is timeless and amazingly adjustable to any style.

You can read how I made the album on Heidi’s Website- I just show you the pictures- you actually might spot some pictures of our awesome California Roadtrip in January if you saw my photos back then.

So fun – I love those Memory Files and definitely will work more with them :)

What kind of project/theme would you use them for?

I would use them to do some fun LO’s about the ladies that i scrap with and crops I’ve gone to. I would also do one on my puppy and my son as they are growing!

Hi Natalie – your file is awesome !!! so much to see I’ve been looking at it for ages.

I think I would use one for when I am blog hopping and wandering around on line or out and about – an Inspiration file would be good – somewhere to put all the bits and pieces, techniques and things llike that that I come across

    Have a great inky day

Gone with the Wind, Macbeth and Dr. Seuss – or what is SHE talking about?

The weekend started and I shortly wanted to say HAPPY WEEKEND to you before I dive into my studio to work like a maniac on a secret project- DEADLINE to turn it in …tomorrow.

And unfortunately not like Gone with the Wind-Tomorrow: “‘I’ll think of it tomorrow, at Tara”– it is more like a Macbeth-Tomorrow: “To-morrow, and to-morrow, and to-morrow, Creeps in this petty pace from day-to-day”

:) It is a very cool project too and once it is done I will finally send out my newsletter and work on a fun new other project that will be something to play along and I think you will love it :)

I leave you with part of an art journal page I made – new habit is playing at least 10-15 minutes every night before bed time in my artjournal- and boy is that a calming and mind easing process- try it :)

Happy Saturday :) See you…tomorrow… as in Dr. Seuss: Today was good. Today was fun. Tomorrow is another one.

Huge hugs

Love your page its gorgeous, I just been checking out your Über*Media classes and oh how I wish I had some money spare so I could sign up they are just what I need especially the Acrylic paint and Gesso one as I have recently got into art journalling. Heard of pan pastels but not used them they do sound interesting :)

I think I’m going to try the ten to 15 mins crafting a day, I do feel crafting is what calms me down and relaxes me after a stressful day with my three boys and house chores.
