Art Stroll: Max Ernst at MoMA

The week after Christmas or as we Germans say “in the week in between the years” my friend Kim and I finally made it to the Max Ernst Beyond Painting exhibition at MoMA. It was on my bucket list ever since it opened and we just made it as it closed at the end of the year.

The Gramineous Bicycle Garnished with bells the Dappled Fire Damps and the Echinoderms Bending the Spine to Look for Caresses, 1921 – Gouache, ink, and pencil on printed paper

Max Ernst (1891-1976) is a huge inspiration – his art is funny (just read the title for the painting on the top)  and above all- a huge amount of Mixed Media techniques we know are coming from his genius experimentations. Ernst was a key member of the Surrealist movement

The Hat Makes the Man, 1920 – Gouache, pencil, oil and ink on cut-and-pasted printed paper

Here Ernst overpainted a page from a millinery catalogue showing women’s hats

Below are some of Max Ernst’s Frottages

These images are created by placing paper atop of various materials, e.g., wood floorboards, twine, leaves, wire mesh, crumpled paper, crusts of bread, and rubbing the surface with a pencil or crayon.

Inspired by the resulting textures, he added details to transform them into fantastical landscapes, objects and creatures.

Frottage is the french word for rubbing.

Can you see the leave rubbing in the eye?

What an amazing idea to create something new or just start from a blank page.

Max Ernst art work shows over and over again birds.

He also did sculptures- I loved this one so much:

Bird Head – 1934-1935  – Bronze

Birds above the Forest, 1929 – Oil on Canvas.

Ernst began this painting by scraping pigments across the surface with a toothed plasterer’s comb. This technique is also called Grattage.

There is a similar painting using this technique by Max Ernst in the Kunsthalle in Hamburg – showing flowers made with those grated heads- I just love it so much.

Sun and Forest, 1931 – cut-and-pasted cardboard with oil, gouache, and pencil on paper.

Kim and I called this one donut in a bag.

To the Rendezvous of Friends (The Friends become Flowers, Snakes, and Frogs), 1928 – oil

For this painting, Ernst built up paint in stages, then used grattage or scraping with hard-edged tools like spatulas and palette knives to expose the underlayers and create surface textures where exceptionally fluid paint is pushed to he tool’s edge.

I love this – it is something I sometimes do in my art as well but of course working with acrylic paints, limits the time and amount of layers due to the fast drying time of acrylic paint.

Mundus est Fabula (the world is a story), 1959 – oil on canvas

look at the amazing dimension and depth he created by using a squeege to scrape off the paint – soooo beautiful.

It made me so happy to see it!

Erst also did a lot of book illustrations and I was especially mesmerized by his self invented hieroglyphic script. Isn’t that the coolest?

Another wonderful bronze!

And last but not least those super tiny etchings (about ATC size) with watercolor and ink additions

A wonderful and inspiring Art Stroll for sure. I cannot wait to play with some of the ideas that popped up in my head while looking at his artwork. I hope you enjoyed it as well :)

If I knew… Art Journal

Do you ever wonder, what you would have done if you just knew ….?

I love the color combination, which I was inspired to used by a painting by Marc Rothko. I love breaking away from my usual color uses by exploring other artists and then use their color schemes or combinations.

Lot’s of pattern with acrylic ink applied with foam stamps and stencils.

Here are the supplies I used, besides acrylic paints:

What is your favorite color combination at the moment?

What a Year – 2017 at the n*Studio

What a year this has been! Besides 2017 being a bit of a rollercoaster ride with some health issues with my shoulder and neck and some other world issues, it was a year of mile stones for me for sure.

Becoming an American Citizen after living for four years here and publishing my first book Artful Adventures in Mixed Media were major and weird and awesome and fun! I will never forget the experiences and feelings tied to these two events.

2017 was also a wonderful year because I had my godson visiting me– which was a cool and bonding experience as well, I am sure neither he nor I will forget this.

An epic road trip reminding me to appreciate our world we live in, to respect nature and history and how fortunate I am to have such an awesome husband who shares the same ideas, values and interests with me. We called it the Tour of the American Ancients

And also last but not least a highlight was meeting the many wonderful students and workshop organizers this year at A Work of Heart in San Jose, CA, The InkPad in NYC, OOAK in Salem, NY, Artiscape in Dublin Ohio, My Heart’s Fancy in Oklahoma, Scrapbooking Forever in CA, Everything Scrapbook and Stamps in FL, Art Workshops in the U.K, in Nathalie’s Studio, NJ, Queen’s Ink in MD and  Runaway Art & Craft in Salem, Oregon, thank you all for coming and inspiring me right back! I cannot wait to come back to many of those places in 2018!

Thank you to all of you who joined me on this Artful Adventure in 2017 – you are amazing! I wish you a wonderful, healthy, creative and peaceful year 2018!

Jumping with… Jen Crossley…a CJS Interview Series

In this interview with Jen Crossley, we talk about Craft vs. Art, metal edging, junk stores, her love of cooking and the unlikely likely occurrence of poisonous spiders in Australia ;)

Jumping with… Jen Crossley…a CJS Interview Series from Nathalie Kalbach on Vimeo.

Jen is also sharing one of her favorite recipes with us:

1 Lge BBQ chicken cooked
1 small Brown onion
1 pkt Bacon
3/4 cup Chicken stock
1 cup Milk
3 Tablespoons Plain flour ( not self raising)
3 dessertspoons Butter

Topping:
3 tablespoons of butter
2 cups cornflakes

Break up the chicken into small pieces no bones. In a saucepan melt the butter then add the onion, add the bacon and cook until done, do not brown the bacon or onion. Next add flour – do not brown the flour. Cook for 2 minutes. Add chicken stock and milk, stir until this thickens then simmer for two minutes. You can add a bit more milk if the sauce is too thick. Mix in Chicken pieces then put it into a casserole dish.

Topping:
Melt the butter and the cornflakes together then spread on top of the chicken base. Bake in a oven on a medium heat till the cornflakes brown on the top.

Serve and enjoy!

Do it Anyway – Art Journal

Be scared and do it anyway …it’s a good motto don’t you think?

In a recent class I had shown my Valley Road Foam Stamps stamped with acrylic paint and then added some blocks of acrylic paint partly over them here and there for a background.

I tried out some of the Finnabair Alchemy Wax – love it- it actually dries permanently and you can see the red/brown areas on the art journal page which are created by rubbing some of the wax on.

I also made some marks with my new Tom Norton tool and walnut ink and it was all in all a playful spread trying out new supplies – fun, fast and educational :)

Are are some of the supplies I used besides Acrylic paints:

did you get some new art supplies over the holidays?

Sweet Noodle Kugel
Serves 10-15
1 cup raisins (optional) – you may substitute other fruits like dried chopped, apricots, or pineapple
12 oz wide egg noodles
6 large eggs
1 lb sour cream (2 cups)
8 oz cottage cheese (1 cup)
8 oz cream cheese, softened – OR farmer’s cheese, crumbled (1 cup)
1 cup sugar
1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
1/4 tsp salt
Cinnamon and sugar for dusting
Nonstick cooking oil spray
large pot, 9×13 baking dish
optional: food processor or blender

Place a rack in the middle of your oven and preheat to 350 degrees F. Cover the raisins with hot water and let them soak to plump while you prepare the other ingredients.Bring a large pot of water to a boil. Add the noodles to the pot, bring back to a boil, and let them cook until tender (not overly soft), about 5 minutes. Drain and return the cooked noodles to the pot. In a food processor or blender, blend together the eggs, sour cream, cottage cheese, cream cheese, sugar, melted butter, and salt. Drain the raisins. Stir them into the noodles. Spray a 9×13 inch baking dish with nonstick cooking oil. Pour the noodle mixture into the dish. Top the kugel by sprinkling generously with sugar and lightly with cinnamon. Alternatively, you can use your favorite kugel topping (streusel, crushed graham crackers, cornflakes, etc.). Bake the kugel for about 60 minutes, turning once halfway through cooking, till the center of the kugel is set and the tips of the noodles turn golden brown. Remove from the oven. Let the kugel rest for 15-20 minutes before slicing. Kugel can be served warm or cold.

Gwen’s Christmas Butter Cookies
Yield: about 2 1/2 dozen
Pre-heat oven to 325 F
Cream together:
1 C softened butter (no margarine or shortening)
3/4 tsp vanilla
1/2 tsp almond extract (if you don’t like almond, just use 1 tsp vanilla and no almond extract)
6 Tbsp powdered sugar
2 Tbsp honey
Add
2 C flour
1 Tbsp milk
Mix just until no trace is left of the flour, then add in 1/4 to 1/2 C finely crushed pecans or walnuts and mix. (Larger nut pieces will make the cookies crumble, so make sure you get them chopped pretty finely.) Roll dough into 1” balls and place about 2” apart – I use a baking stone and cook for about 16-17 minutes, or you can cook on ungreased cookie sheet for about 14 minutes or until very light brown. While warm, roll the cookies in powdered sugar and then set on a cooling rack. Once almost completely cool, roll the cookies in powdered sugar again until thoroughly coated.

Stroll Through the Hood – December 2017

Time for a Stroll Through the Hood . Strolls through my hood get me out of my studio, they help me unstuck and often I get inspired by what I see and to get new ideas to create something. It is part of my philosophy about Artful Adventures in Mixed Media – which is the subject of my book. Here are some photos that I gathered in the last couple weeks.

Always love the sky in winter time from our deck. On a funny side note when I was a kid my mom and aunts would tell me that the sky looks that bright and red in the winter because the angels are baking christmas cookies ….

A couple days with snow already here … I love the lights and the weird foggy skyline of NYC and JC in the background

HA – this is an unfinished painting of mine which I put into our bedroom on my side – so every morning I get reminded that this is not done yet …yeah …cruel- I know- LOL

Yarn Bombing near the Christopher Street Path – keep those poor trees warm and cozy :) Love the pattern and colors

and our Christmas Tree this year- not as tall as usual but I love it-. I was laying laying on the sofa being sick when I took the photo – hence the crazy angle- LOL  (I am feeling better now- just a stupid cold).

Not a hole lotta strolling out side I guess- but Baby…it was cold outside ;)

Hope you had a wonderful month so far and some time to stroll through your hood – see you next month with some takes from my neck of the wood :)

Hope is what keeps us going – Art Journal

This started as a page where I had scraped off some paint at the back of my art journal and while the color combination was first not striking and now feel it works quite well :)

I painted over a magazine image with Neopastels and used my new My Home is my Castle numerals stamps as well as some of the building stamps from the Stroll Around The Block set.

I included the Hope – and Love Tag into the journaling. I like how the buildings stamped with white ink are playing well with the the marks and stamping of the background.

Here are some of the supplies I used for this art journal page.

have a wonderful day!!!
