CHA Winter 2013 – Part I

It was an awesome show -really- the best one I have been so far. All in all I would say the mood was optimistic and good and you could feel a vibe of “Let’s do this thing and we will rock it!” …if that is an indicator for the overall feel for the industry…it is going upwards again :)

It was fun taking a class for myself instead of teaching. It was a great time playing with some old and new products and reuse techniques in Dyan’s Class.

Loved sitting next to Michelle :)

I also had a wonderful helper for my designer showcase – very exciting. I didn’t do any decoration and first felt it might be too plain looking at all other designer’s tables, but in the end it was me, my work and you either hate it or like it, so the decoration wouldn’t really change any of that, I thought ;)

There is something wonderful about seeing your business name in print on the show floor – I have to say and I was very happy that my little school science table was received very well :)

I had awesome dinner with amazing friends …it was wonderful to spent a lot of quality time with friends in the evening and talk about future plans and worries and actions…It was the best thing of the show.

these are two altered books that I created for the Prima Booth- I will show them in more detail soon.

I also loved bumping into not only people I met before, but also people who I know for ages online but never met in person. Like Sharmaine! It was so good to hug her and squeeze her and call her my own!

I loved the artwork all around, although what I found interesting – I might be wrong …that all in all the emphasis in most booths was on the product display not on artwork as it seemed to be in other years. I would love to hear if other attendance’s thought the same way.

Here are some of the stencils- that I worked with at the Crafter’s Workshop Booth – as you can see Julie also has the same stencil design as with the stamp – I love love love that!

And I loved spying this layout by Ronda with her new awesome stencils too – hehehe- this photo is from Summer CHA 2012 in Chicago.

Here are two awesome ladies taking my make’n take at the Crafter’s Workshop booth – from Australia and Canada- so wonderful to see them booth :)

You think this might be my favorite design having it photographed in all different ways? LOL- I love love love it!

And this post will be finished with this wonderful photo of Joe Rotella, who wears this corset for a good cause. It was for a charity, you had to make a bra yourself and then dance in a flashmob and then that bra/corset was auctioned off. I love this sweater with this awesome corset painted on. And I tell you what- Joe was the ONLY man who agreed doing this- because it was for charity and so he got over the fear of feeling embarrassed just for that. BIG kudos for this and I love him even more for that!

This is the right street for celebrity spotting or…Sightseeing in L.A.

Not to lead you wrong with my title- but I kid you not, that was the sentence that Birgit and I heard most on the hop on-hop off bus we went on for sightseeing in Hollywood. It was hilarious, essentially there is also a Celebrity GPS…oh well… ;) We didn’t see one celebrity although we were in all the “perfect” streets LOL.

I am so glad Birgit convinced me to get in a day earlier and do a little sightseeing day together. We had so much fun together. We stopped at Mel’s Dinner – love the interior!

We indulged in a huge breakfast after we traveled almost 24 hours and then woke up the first time at 11pm after going to bed at 9pm…and then hourly. Kind of like “hey, I don’t care you only slept only 2 hours and it is only 11pm now…it is 8 am in Germany and you gotta get up now”…it was pathetic.

BTW taking food photos was our favorite…LOL- especially when you get a piece of chocolate cake which we had decided to split- that would feed about 20 people!

I think the waiter was laughing secretly at us as we repeatedly asked if that is really a portion for one person. We couldn’t even manage to eat half of this but it was delicious!

We did some shopping, well…actually read: I spent my yearly clothing budget in 50s dresses and I love every piece I bought and then we did the before mentioned hop on-hop off bus tour.

We saw some beautiful stuff – like this lamp-post sculpture at LACMA – love it!

So glad we did this extra day. We laughed so much and it got us in the right mood after some stressful weeks to go to CHA. That will be next :)

Rod Stewart at the Saratoga Race Track in Saratoga Springs, New York. He was eating french fries at a concession stand and when my friend and I saw him we were close enough to pick a french fry from his plate. We were stopped in our tracks with our mouths hanging open because we had been listening to his music on the trip to New York. He started laughing and gave us a huge smile. Stupidly we smiled back and stumbled away to tell our husbands.

Mick Jagger, Downtown Julie Brown, Dustin Hoffman, Meg Ryan, Patricia Clarkson, Ali McGraw, Colin Powell….there were more, but I can’t remember. All were spotted on NYC streets except for Colin Powell, who was in the gift shop of the Waldorf Astoria (where I was meeting a friend, not staying there – who could afford it?!). The most fun was Dustin Hoffman. I was wearing white pants with a black shirt. He was wearing black pants with a white shirt – exact opposites. He looked me up & down and gave me a nice smile. That was back when I was younger and thinner. I don’t think he’d look me up & down today, but he’d probably still smile.

When I was an acting student in NYC years ago, my best friend in school was Lisa Roberts, Julia Robert’s sister. Julia was just working at Ann Taylor and didn’t have plans to act, yet. She definitely had the charisma and groundedness to do it. She was wonderful. I also went on a date with their brother Eric Roberts, and my massage partner in voice class was Dylan Mcdermott. A lifetime ago.
I want to see the dresses too!

I saw Willie Nelson in the airport one time – he came up behind me in line – we chatted for a few minutes – he was going to Hawaii and i was going to Nashville – we laughed. I didn’t ask for a pic – i was being nice. I’ve regretted that ever since.

Love diners like Mel’s and we have a couple around here.
Celebs? No big names since they don’t come to mind, but I did win a trip to NYC to tour the All My Children (soap opera) set and it was fun. I had lunch with a hunk from the show. BTW, I could eat most of that cake I’m sure. YUM!

Ha ha ha… really made me laugh… and had a butterfly or two in my tummy!! In october we went from Denmark to California and on our trip we stayed in Venice Beach for 8 days and of course visited Los Angeles. We have been exactly where you have shown pictures from!!! Even Mel’s Diner :-) :-) Loved that place and the 50’es decor. And my two oldest boys took pictures of ALL our meals. I kid you not :-) :-) We have SOO many food pictures! But we just had the greatest trip and I really wish I could go again. (allthough me body wouldn’t like to eat like that all the time :-) :-) ) Enjoy, and have a safe trip home, when you’re done!

I have met a football star he was really lovely my son who has autism ran into him and he was so sweet and very gentle also some tv stars here in Australia Kate Richie from Home and Away and other shows
but my son when he grew up went to England and met David Tennant [talk about me being jealous such eye candy]

About 20 years ago (maybe more!) I was in Aspen, sitting in a bar having a beer with my husband. I looked across the bar and there, sitting in the corner, was John Denver. My heart melted.

And I also got the autograph of Mickey Dolenz’s sister…way back in ’67. That was really thrilling!

Oh, your pictures are really lovely, and you did a LOT for one day!!! I have a daughter who has lived in LA since graduating from college in 1996. Whenever we visit her, we will be somewhere and she will say “Oh, there’s…..” or, “did you see who just walked past us?” I never did…they look totally different in ‘normal’ clothes and no makeup!!!
Wasn’t Mel’s awesome? Now you can see why Americans are so overweight…..our servings have become way too generous!! Glad you had a great time!

Many, many years ago I saw Bob Hope driving. We waved at him & he even waved back. I saw Dinah Shore at an event I was working at. And I met Burt Reynolds & got a photo with him. I also saw Barbara Eden at a restaurant I worked at. That was all a very long time ago & I haven’t seen anyone famous since then! Hope you are having a fabulous time in the USA!

In my next life I wanna be a kitty …or Prima Canvas

I simply adore the ability of cats to sleep totally relaxed everywhere in the most fun or adorable positions. I wish I could do the same. Like on a plane…I soooo can’t sleep on a plane. Maybe it is the fear of sleeping and starting to drool on my neighbors shoulder lol ;)

This photo is of my brother in laws kitty- don’t get fooled by this sweet innocent sleeping face…this cat is an attack cat – LOL. Nonetheless very cute ;)

LOVE this canvas….so much texture..its perfect. The black & white theme with just a splash of color really makes the kitty stand out. I too have issues with sleeping on a plane. I have been on only 1 overseas flight and I was MISERABLE.

Sorry to admit it Nathalie – I too am like a cat. I can sleep anywhere…even in the noisiest of places. Sleep is such a precious commodity – I squeeze it in wherever I can…yet I was also too wound up to sleep on the plane…so I’m feeling the jetlag today. Hope you have a wonderful break before your travels home :)

Waving from L.A. …or Kermit The Frog

Only in L.A. can Kermit have his own star :) Love it.

Birgit Koopsen and I arrived after almost 24 hours traveling in L.A. and had a lot of fun doing a bit sightseeing for a day. Now we are at CHA and it is crazy crazy busy and fun. I will post some pictures soon.

Roadtrip or…Prima Prima

I had a lot of fun creating this layout for the CHA Prima Booth – I love the new Engraver Collection ! Perfect for some snapshots with my cellphone camera from last year in January. As it was posted on the Prima Blog I can now share it with you :)

Although I do love black and white- I have a hard time sticking to it- LOL- as you can see I adjusted the paper to my style – added a bit of my favorite colors.

I used several Distress Stains on top of the paper and also added a tiny bit of Liquitex Spraypaint – and voila – the grunge is back ;)

I also love that the packaging of the metal embellishments is made to use it too. I love things you can recycle and upcycle.

Wisent and Elk or….n*Studio Day Recap

Last Saturday we had an n*Studio day – first one of the year with workshops.

It was a small but cozy group and it was wonderful to start the new year with a workshop like this.

I love doing workshops with “my girls” .

Having a group of people who come regularly to your home is precious.

This time we did the Über*Media Acrylic Paint Class (mini version) and the Altered Book Workshop Be Awesome Be A Booknut.

We laughed quite a lot too, seriously weird when you taught classes several times in English and then you can’t remember German words for certain tools all of a sudden-…LOL

the other side of the table looked as concentrated ;)

Fun books they brought…like “Wisent and Elk” ;)

and the results were fab

Thanks girls for the fab day! My schedule for spring is coming soon -.

Now I am packing and I am leaving tomorrow for CHA. I am looking forward seeing some friends, see the newest “stuff” of the industry . I will try to post some sneaks in between here – and maybe I am allowed to show some of the CHA Projects soon too ;) – first let’s see how I can cram them into the suitcase – LOL.

WOW This looks like SO much fun!!!!!
Natalie…is jump start still happening?
I haven’t received a video for a week…the USA one (company) was only their products with no video but other than that, nothing since day 3??? Please let me know so I don’t keep looking for them :( I LOVED THEM!!!!!! Lots of Hugs and fun for you at CHA.

Shriek….or …5 more days

Shriek is all I can say…five more days till I fly out to CHA.

And in between I stil have to work on some projects for CHA, teach two workshops tomorrow and take care of my Designer Show Case at CHA (come by and visit my little showcase if you are there ;) !)

OH …and things need to be packed, laundry to be washed, people to be cared off, christmas decoration to be stored away, hairs need to be cut and households need to be cleaned.

Which means….: I will have to put this part of my blog for a couple of days on a little hiatus – you get enough of me – LOL- at Creative JumpStart 2013. It is awesome- I see so many wonderful things – and people are excited about the event and being creative and there is a huge amount of positive feedback.

But there is also a lot of questions about the event on all imaginable platforms:

And THAT means…since I have worked on that project for months now and the last days nonstop from early morning till late night...if you have any questions regarding Creative JumpStart – I won’t be able to answer you!

SORRY!

Not because I am a mean evil person…as some seem to think…no, just because I think I have worked very hard to provide you with a nice and free event and there needs to be a point where you are on your own.

It is massive and the signups are massive.

If I could I would hire someone to take care of questions…but alas – no such thing because this event is FREE!

So that means – if you have not received the newsletter, make sure

a) you signed up for the RIGHT newsletter. Not my n*Studio newsletter but the Creative JumpStart Newsletter- Sign up here!

b) If you signed up and you still didn’t get the newsletter or you have any other question – go to the FAQ page. 99.9 % of the question are answered by reading this.

If you after that still have questions- I am sorry, but I won’t be able to help you! Again- not because I am an evil person- but because I need to take care of the things that are my living – the ones mentioned in the second sentence. Only if I do that, I am able to offer things like Creative JumpStart also in the future- and I am sure that is understandable :)

He who has a why to live for can bear almost any how… or… My word for 2013

There is a lot to think and say about Nietzsche…not here though- LOL- but this quote above by him…is a smart one! So…let’s get a bit philosophical…sigh ;)

I have thought long about my word for 2013. Last year it was “transform”. I transformed in different ways, than I anticipated. But still I guess I transformed…2012 was a hard year for me…in many ways. A lot of questioning in different directions…and over the question how to do certain things, I lost my reasons why I was doing them.

Why did I quit my job, why did I become a mixed media artist, why do I blog, why do I do Creative JumpStart, why do I take care of my great-aunt, why am I on the house condo committee, why ….?

Everything last year was just about : How? How to manage financially, how to get further with my art, how to keep up with blogging, how to organize Creative JumpStart and how to take care of all things related to taking care of an elderly person, how to …HOW..?

I lost myself in the how… and that although I do so perfectly know WHY! I do know all the why’s to those things. I do ! I just need to keep my focus on that instead of how…the rest will just come …hopefully LOL. Just today I had to remind myself again on the why I do something…

that’s WHY! ;)

Ah- and the canvas…well it is the old one from last year – “transform”- was transformed- so there ;)

What so you don’t want comments on the shriek post Nat.
Why you are almost evil and mean (totally kidding of course).
You give so much for free that a few days off is just fine.
CJS rocks as usual. Thanks for doing it. A donation will find it’s way there by the end of the month for sure. It’s like a super online class with variety and inspiration!
Happy CHA even though I’m sure the deadlines will be stressful the community of artists will lift your spirits (and keep you up late). Who knows, maybe you’ll find a new pair of
shoes?

Love it! It really is easy to get too bogged down in “how” when you’re overwhelmed. I like this idea of having a word for the year. My mom has started doing it too. I guess my word for 2013 is “better,” because I really need things to be better than last year!

Hi Nathalie! I like your word for 2013! “Why” The perfect word to keep you focused on what is important. Focus is not my strong suit! I’m sure you are very busy … but if you get a chance, do you think you could email me Creative JumpStart #1? For some reason I found JumpStart #2 in my inbox but not #1. I checked my Spam and Trash folders but it was not there. I’m not sure why I got the 2nd jumpstart just fine and not the first? Crazy right?

i love that you quoted Nietzsche – I have a degree in philosophy and it was this quote that pulled me into studying it!

Thank you all for your amazing support throughout 2012!

Hello, I was wondering about the Jumpstart class starting. Didn’t recieve any emails yesterday for it? I know I’m signed up on the first day you announced it?? Any idea what could be wrong?
