June 22-24, 2018 3 Day Workshop in Coventry, UK

Birgit Koopsen and I are so excited that we are coming back to teach another 3-Day Workshop in Coventry in the U.K for Art Workshops.

Take a Stroll Around the Block with Birgit and Nat and discover that inspiration is all around you!
In this 3 day workshop, we’ll embark upon a creative scavenger hunt to seek out inspiring clues in our environment. You’ll learn how to turn these inspiring clues into artwork by using inspiration maps, some of Birgit and Nat’s favorite techniques and tools, and your own personal style.

Based on what you have seen on your stroll and how you apply these tips and tricks, you’ll come away with very unique and personal art journal pages that work. In the end, you’ll have learned about pattern design, composition, and other Elements and Principles of art and a new technique for gathering inspiration for your art-making.

After these three days you’ll know how to find and look for inspiration in architecture, street art, nature and museums and how to translate all this into meaningful and creative artwork.

I hope you will join us, we had such an awesome class last year in Coventry- you can see some pictures of the 3Day Workshop back then here.

Here is a little video where Birgit and I are talking a bit more about the workshop and what we will do:

Workshops at Runaway Art & Craft in Oregon

Last weekend I made my way to Oregon to teach at Runaway Art & Craft – look at this cool view I had from the plane of Mount Hood!

It was so lovely to meet Christy the owner- she has an amazing store – you have to check it out when you are in the area. Can you tell I loved her:

And such a cool classroom as well – spacious and well organized and hey…a brick wall …you gotta love a brick wall as well!

Saturday I taught my Stroll Through the Hood Workshop and a Master Art Express Art Journaling Workshop

Loved all the cool color combinations people started out with on their Ampersand boards in the Stroll Through the Hood Class.

Love this gorgeous swirly sky and the patterns on here

So much fun to see the different interpretations .

Loved how this was stamped with the back of my ArtFoamies Midtown Stamps and then using the door stamp from My Home is My Castle stamp set as a window- as well as my new art deco house.

It was so cool to see all the new stamps in store as well – it was the first time I was using them in a workshop – woot woot.  A lot of them sold out but she might still have a couple!

We even did a group photo- yeahhh!

Loved the art journal classes as well- loads of pattern play and color exploration.

Look at all the stencils and stamps- It is still a weird thing to see- seriously!

Here is my wonderful sunday crowd – they were so much fun too!!!

This weekend made me super happy- I just love hanging out with people that love to create and smile a lot :)

Art Journal Spread before some color hit it

Thank you so much to all the students for coming to the classes and spending such a fun and wonderful time with me and thank you Christy for having me! I hope I will be back some time :)

If you want to take a workshop with me in-person – some of my 2018 workshops are posted here – some i still need to add – I would love to see you ! I am super excited that I will actually be also teaching in Europe 4 times next year, I will be teaching in The Netherlands in April,  in the U.K in June together with my sweet friend Birgit Koopsen, in Germany in September, and in the U.K again in November with my wonderful friend Julie Fei-Fan Balzer. Workshops in San Jose – January 17th & 18th!

I’m coming back to A Work of Heart in San Jose in the New Year! I had an absolute blast the last time I was out there, so I’m really looking forward to returning. Hopefully I will see some familiar faces and meet some new ones too :) Here is what I have planned:

Mono Print Painting

Wednesday, January 17th, 10am – 5pm

Join me for a day long class in Mono Print Painting. We will dive into the basics of mixed media mono printing first and I will introduce you to the Mono Print Painting technique inspired by H.N. Werkman. I will show you different ways on how to create elaborate and layered mono printed paintings using self made tools as well as stamps and stencils. I will share with you my thinking process on developing the technique and how we you can put your own personal spin on it, so that you can take your art to a whole different level.

Art Rules: Art in Translation – Art Journaling

Thursday, January 18th, 10am – 5pm

In this day long class, we’ll explore several master artists and get inspired by their artwork and techniques to create wonderful and unique art journal pages. Whether it be the Impressionist’s amazing color combinations or some of the Surrealist’s fun collage techniques, there are many different Master Artists whose skills can serve as a starting point for your own artwork. Find out what you like and what works for you. Learn about opacity and layering, colors, troubleshooting, mixing materials, making your own tools, creating backgrounds and patterns. We will work with acrylic paints, inks, markers, wax bars and other paint media to create dimension and texture. We will make the most of stencils, stamps, mono printing plates and generic tools to make our own mark.

Get ready to Rule Your Art Journal!

Photos of my Workshops in Maryland

Last weekend I was back at  The Queen’s Ink in Maryland to teach two classes to two wonderful and super talented groups of ladies!

Saturday I taught my Art Rules- Art Journaling class and we talked about several wonderful artists and let them inspire us to pursue different styles and techniques.

Look at those gorgeous windows in the classroom – The Queen’s Ink is located in an old Mill and it is just an amazing facility.

Lot’s of color and pattern coloration in this class and lots of super sweet and happy smiles

And look- is Lea hugging her self made foam stamp?

Tough to get a photo of the group- but here they are.

Loving this colorful Mid Town City scape by Kitty creates in this picture.

And in the front seeing a lot of those little n*Studio products made my day – I tell you, it never gets old.

More wonderful smiles

some sketching and stamping

Lot’s of layers later

still smiling – woot woot :)

Look at the gorgeous page by Peggy- lots of doodling and color- LOVE

And at the end of the day a sweet photo with some of the gorgeous ladies with my book Artful Adventures in Mixed Media.

On Saturday I taught my Mono Print Painting class. We started with the basics of mono printing

made our own stencils

and printed more and more

and then went full force into Mono Print Painting.

Loved seeing the different approaches to the technique – so much fun

I think I see a face in this print -but what do you see?

and this is really cool!

And Janene and Lea holding up their books to me …they know what makes me jumping up and down – LOL

Thank you to all of the students who came to the classes- it was so great to spend creative time with you!!! I hope I will see you again! Thank you also to The Queen’s Ink, Katie, Lea and Terry for having me and taking so good care of me.

If you want to join any of my In-Person Workshops a list of them is posted here. I will be teaching a lot of fun workshops in Salem, Oregon at Runaway Art and Craft Studio – December 2 -3, 2017. Color Crush Workshop in Coventry, UK for Art Workshops

Last weekend my friend Birgit Koopsen and I taught our 3Day Color Crush Retreat for Art Workshops in Coventry in the U.K.

We had a wonderful group of 34 super talented and sweet ladies creating an art journal from scratch.

Birgit and I both love color but we both have a different style and we set the mood by putting a lot of colorful stuff out.

we started with some color theory and color exercises and some ink drawings and stamping.

so many happy faces – it was such a great group.

Look at all those colors!

Aren’t those gorgeous? The second day we did a lot of gelli printing techniques

Now if you do not call this a yummie color crush!

And we even had a short session for making your own foam stamps outside- the weather was great…who says it is always raining in the U.K?

And a lot of the new Art Foamies were used as well

And of course there was a ton of opportunity to buy some stuff …always love seeing the ArtFoamies, most were gone after 3 days.

It was wonderful to see Tali, Tsila, Iris and Hedi from Israel again -it is so many years ago that I met them when teaching in Tel Aviv. Thanks for coming all the way to the UK to join us.

The third day we started the day off binding the book and adding the covers. I don’t think Hazel and Shirley were really as scared as they look like in the photo when Birgit explained how to add the covers- LOL

After having the book all together we got a treat.

The food for the event was plenty some and so good and on top of that Sue, B, Leroy, Debbie and Pam made all of us feel really pampered during the whole retreat.

And then it was all about finishing up some pages and showing how we layer on top of our backgrounds

And…seeing a lot of the ladies with my book “Artful Adventures in Mixed Media”  made me super duper extra happy. I know I am a dork but it really does!

Since I came home this week I feel so energized and inspired- it was such a wonderful retreat. Thank you so much to all of the wonderful students who joined us, for Sue for inviting us and to her and her staff for taking great care of us and to my wonderful friend, partner in crime and very tall co-teacher Birgit! It was amazing.

If you weren’t able to join but would like to take a workshop with me check out my In-Person Classes. I will be teaching at the Queens Ink in Maryland  and at Runaway Art and Craft Studio on November 4-5 and December 2 -3 in Oregon. And if you are interested in taking a workshop with me and Birgit – we are coming back to Syracuse July 20-22, 2018 for a three day fun retreat – so safe the date.

Workshops in the Netherlands in April 2018

I’m happy to announce that I will be coming to the Netherlands in the spring to teach 2 workshops at De Scrapheap. Come join me on April 21 and 22, 2018 with some workshops to help you take your Art Journal to new places :) I am so excited to see both old friends and new faces at these workshops!

April 21, 2018

My Master Art Express workshop is a journey through art history that will help you find new inspiration for your art journaling. We’ll look to the work of master artists from all over Europe and then we’ll play with new techniques to help you push your own personal art journaling style.

April 22, 2018

Artvergnugen is all about taking your art journal to the next level! We’ll play with different media and techniques, we’ll use stamps, stencils, and acrylic paints to create rich layers, and we’ll discuss composition and making tough choices. Artvergnugen is what makes your art journal a work of art, and this workshop will get you there!

New Downloadable PDF Art Lesson: Creating Texture

I’m excited to announce that my downloadable PDF Art Lesson 9: Creating Texture Plates Inspired by Nature is now available in the NorthLightShop! For $3.99 it’s a great deal – you get a full step out AND a 10min video :)

As you know, I love playing with texture in my artwork, especially the textures that can be found in nature. In this Art Lesson, you will learn a way to create some super gorgeous textures with a few new materials and techniques, and I will share with you how I use inspiration from nature to guide me. I begin with an inspiration photo of geysers I took at Yosemite National Park, and by using a variety of mediums and mixed media techniques, I create a deeply textured plate that begs to be touched.

You can check out on ClothPaperScissors how this lesson and tips from my book Artful Adventures in Mixed Media inspired Jeannine Stein to create some beautiful nature inspired tags.

The Lesson is available here.
