Workshops in Kentucky in May 2018

I will be teaching 2 workshops at Ephemera Paducah in Kentucky May 18-20, 2018 so mark your calendars. One will be my very popular Mono Print Painting all day class where you can learn a really cool way to make mono prints. The other is my 2 day Artful Adventures in Art Journaling class which will cover all kinds of techniques to help you find inspiration in your art journaling. And if you sign up for both classes, you will save a bit, so I hope you will join me!

Mono Print Painting

Friday May 18th: 9am – 5pm

Join me for a day long class in Mono Print Painting. We will dive into the basics of mixed media mono printing first and I will introduce you to the Mono Print Painting technique inspired by H.N. Werkman. I will show you different ways on how to create elaborate and layered mono printed paintings using self made tools as well as stamps and stencils. I will share with you my thinking process on developing the technique and how we you can put your own personal spin on it, so that you can take your art to a whole different level.

Artful Adventures in Art Journaling

Saturday & Sunday, May 19th & 20th: 9am – 4:30pm

Let’s go on an Artful Adventure together and explore all the different ways to find inspiration for our Art Journaling! Pack your bags with the basics for this 2-day adventure. We’ll explore color theory and ways to master composition with the Principles of Art. As our journey begins we’ll meet some of the great artists of the world and see how their style and methods can inspire our own creations. Then as we travel together we’ll spend some time exploring transfer techniques, collage and layering processes, and ways to create both visual and actual texture. All along the way, we’ll be gathering inspiration from the sights we see and the people we meet. We’ll pull everything together when we reach our destination – the pages of our Art Journal!

Photos of my Mixed Media Workshops in California

Last weekend I taught three mixed media classes at Scrapbooking Forever in Westvillage, California.

It was a wonderful time there with the students- I taught my Artvergnugen, as well as my Master Art Express and my Walk With Me Class.

Here are some wonderful patterned pages from the Artvergnugen Class.

It truly was a lot of Artvergnugen :)

I also taught my Master Art Express Art Journaling class which is taking Art Journaling a bit further and takes inspiration from different Artists imaginary traveling through Europe.

I loved all the different ideas and approaches the students tried out!

My altered book class Walk With Me was super fun as well and the ink drawings some of my students added to their books.

I did not take many photos as some of my students wanted to remain private – a request I happily follow- but here is one of Winkie and me. If you ever happen to be in a class room with Winkie prepare yourself for a life story ride that blows your mind. My favorite thing about teaching is, that besides that it makes me happy to see people being creative, what wonderful and interesting people I meet along my way. Everyone’s story is worth telling and I am truly grateful that I am meeting so many amazing people.

Hope to see you in one of my classes in the future. Check out my in-person-class schedule. I will be in Florida next weekend at Everything Scrapbook and Stamps and then fly in October to the U.K. to teach at a retreat with my friend Birgit Koopsen in Coventry – there are still a couple spots left.

Hands-On Acrylics at Kremer Pigments, NYC

A couple weeks ago I took a 1 day class on how to make acrylic paints at Kremer Pigments in NYC.

They usually only held classes so far on how to make watercolor and oil paints, and I found out about the acrylic making class a day before it took place and had to jump right on it.

The class was held in the basement – it has a little closed off area where they make their Kremer paints.

Below my workspace :)

Roger, who held the class, explained that this was the first time teaching it, as acrylic paint is one of the hardest paints to make.

It all starts with making a color paste out of pigments and water , sometimes also alcohol is needed to break the water tension.

Roger showed us how to mix the color paste and how the consistency of the paste should look like.

and here I am mixing orange

using a muler for another color to grind out the last lumps

look at this luscious ultramarine blue

the green pigment below was accidentally in the pile- it turned out this wasn’t suitable for acrylics – but it was for sure pretty (bummer)

Here are my color pastes

After making the colors pastes in the first half of the class it was time to make acrylic medium in the viscosity and sheen of our liking.

If you wonder about some German labels, Kremer Pigments is actually a German company :) The medium making part was harder for me than the color paste as there are so many different ways to make it.

The next step was to combine the color paste and the acrylic medium

and voila – I got acrylic paint. I mostly strived to make thick and soft bodied matte paint. Some of them turned out pretty cool – some of them I think were a bit weak in their consistency of the color paste and one of my mediums was really off and changed a bit later (guess I didn’t do it the right way- LOL)

But all in all I love my new acrylic paints and I definitely will do this again by just using pre-made mediums to get the colors and the consistency of my needs. It was a really awesome class, Roger was incredibly knowledgable and so patient – answering a hundred million questions from us (we were all there for different reasons – to make paints for different needs). If you are in NYC and you feel you would like to learn about making paints check out their class schedule. And …the store is worth a visit in any event for some color therapy :)

Workshops at Scrapbooking Forever in SoCal

I’m super excited to be teaching 3 workshops at Scrapbooking Forever in Westlake Village in Southern California:

September 9, 2017, 10:00am – 6:00pm: Artvergnugen – Art Journaling Workshop

It starts the moment you sit down, an experience that is distinctly art journaling. A quick exhilaration, a sense of control, the art media’s surprising responsiveness as if they were simply an extension of you. There is a word for this creative experience: Artvergnugen! Artvergnugen is what makes your journal a piece of art. Join me and play with different art media and supplies; discover fun layering techniques with stamps, stencils and acrylic paints. Let’s talk about colors, composition, love-it or list-it to truly reveal your own style, and learn techniques, tips and tricks to take your art journaling further and turn it into Artvergnugen.

September 10, 2017, 9:00am – 1:00pm: Walk With Me – Altered Book Workshop

There is something so beautiful about a book – the cover, the spine, the paper, the typography and it makes a beautiful companion on a journey. Walk with Me and give an old and maybe discarded book a new colorful life. Learn fun stenciling, stamping and book altering techniques, how to draw when you can’t draw and use the book as a wonderful substrate to create a beautiful keepsake. Use acrylic paints, and inks and fun tools and techniques and be ready for a fun ride.

September 10, 2017, 2:00pm – 6:00pm: Master Art Express – Art Journaling Workshop

Imagine you could take a trip through Europe and at each stop one of the many masters of European art would materialize and invite you to explore their art to implement into your art journal. Let’s take this imaginary trip together and explore different European artists at each station, taking their artwork as an inspiration for mixed media techniques and colors. We will discuss why some things work and why some things don’t work and will solve the little “problems” that sometimes occur while creating art. Work with acrylic paints, acrylic inks, different tools and materials and gain a deeper knowledge about the versatility and possibilities of your art materials. Let the travel itself be part of the journey and take the elements of art in to push your own art journaling style just a notch further.
