Mixed Media Classes at Scrap N Crop in Malaysia

I had a wonderful time teaching at Scrap n Crop in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. I taught my Über*Media Acrylic Paint with loads of techniques around making your own background papers, as well as a Texture Season Canvas and a PanPastel Class. Here are some pictures of the class

Scrap n Crop is an amazing store. A two story house filled to the brim with awesome products and a nice workshop room. It is massive. The coolest- not only awesome new product- but also older out of stock products that are still on high demand. If you wonder where all the cool Hambly Transparencies went…you can sniff those beautiful screenprinted beauties right there…and yes, some of them fell into my suitcase. With all the mixed media supplies and special treasures…makes your heart beat a bit faster!

Of course seeing my Stampendous! signature Stamps and my StencilGirl Products Stencils in the store made my heart beat faster too. It is kind of unreal to see those things so far away from home – pretty pretty cool. And oh we used them all in the classes too.

The first thing I learned myself on the first day was…you cannot talk to long when you have the acrylic paint laid out already. The paint dries so quick in this climate…unbelievable. Without a Slow Dri Medium it is really really hard to get anywhere. I have taught in pretty hot weather …unforgettable is Israel and Greece and one summer day in Spain makes me still faint, but boy this one beat it all. I had to change my teaching style instantly in order to make the demos work .

We created a lot of texture with my stamps, stencils and acrylic paint – and stacked loads of papers

and I loved seeing the results

The girls were so talented and it was fun seeing them play with different acrylic media

Of course we had to do a photo session the last evening.

This photo of Val, Penny and me cracks me up…apparently Val too- LOL- she couldn’t stop laughing.

It was sad to say good bye but we were sent of with freshly home made waffles and a loaf of yummie bread to the airport in the crack of the dawn. Thank you to all my wonderful students- it was wonderful to meet you. A special shout out to Saza who had her contractions during my class but was going to finish the first class because she waited so long for it. But then she really had to go…Congratulations to her wonderful baby she gave birth to the next day! I for sure will never forget this ;)

Dare to Be Different or Blog Hop with Catherine Scanlon

Art Journal

Today I am playing along with some other wonderful designers in a blog hop with my friend’s Catherine Scanlon’s Stamps. I am so proud of her for having her own designs out and I loved playing with them in my art journal.

You can see all of her fabulous stamp, stencil and die cut designs in the AGW Catalogue here

I used her Annie Paisley Stamp for the background and I loved coloring it in on a piece of music sheet to make one design stand out going along with my sentiment. I also used the Clara Paisley stamp on the right hand side as a nice playful border.

The background was spray painted and I colored in the music sheet after stamping with Derwent Inktense Blocks.

Photos of my Asia Trip: Kuala Lumpur

Kuala Lumpur Malaysia

After staying in Hong Kong for a couple days we flew to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The flight is about four hours – so easy peasy after the 16 hours flight from New York to Hong Kong ;)

First glimpse of Malaysia. After a good nights sleep at our wonderful hosts, Val, Penny and their gorgeous Mom, we had a great breakfast the next morning with Val and then went sightseeing. You know for 1 Dollar this was pretty pretty delicious and the coffee was a good starter too :) I will get into food a bit more …hehehee

Since I was teaching at Scrap n Crop for two days (photos are coming soon) and that was actually the main reason for going to Malaysia- I have not done as much sightseeing as my husband but I saw a couple things thanks to Val!

Kuala Lumpur- the Petronas Twin Towers. Pretty impressive as the tallest twin towers in the world. Kuala Lumpur itself is pretty modern. I saw a bit of China Town and Little India- but again- it was more a fly by. It was fun though. It was different from what I would have expected of K.L. I also had some interesting talks with expats living in K.L Besides that there was a lot of talk during the classes. Since the incident with the plane which we all still don’t know what happened with, a lot of people in Malaysia are worrying in how other’s are perceiving Malaysia. All I can say is: You cannot make a judgement about a country, if you have never been there. There is also not a way to put Malaysia into one scheme. Malaysia is a very diverse country and it was interesting to see a glimpse of this. I had a wonderful experience. If you feel the urge to hear about my perspective – I am happy to talk about this in person.

One stop were the Batu Caves in which there is one of the most popular Hindu Shrines outside India. It was impressive and beautiful to be there.

Some of these photos are actually taken by Val…because Knucklehead aka Nat Kalbach forgot her camera in the house! Good one ! So I was taking photos of my cell phone – which well..yeah – ok…whatever ;)

It was quite a hike up those stairs- but beautiful. You have to imagine that at the Thaipusam Festival this becomes a pilgrimage for Hindus worldwide. I am not up for a disclaimer today (kids please do not do this at home!) – but if you wanna read more about the Thaipusam Festival- go ahead! All I say is, I am not complaining about this hike…it can feel worse going up there then just with no burden and without spikes and skewers through my flesh!

Inside the caves were these beautiful temples and figures and the most awesome thing was that there were little natural windows in the caves – giving a beautiful light – it was just stunning

Besides tourists like us

there were also a lot of people praying – so we didn’t take too many photos as to respect this.

As you can see there was also some monkey business going on. These little critters weren’t too friendly btw- they looked cute…but if you came to close they would show you two nice rows of teeth with a kind of a growling “get the heck away from me…or hand me all your food in your bag you upright walking idiot”…at least that is what I heard ;)

The Batu Caves were definitely one of my very faves of the whole trip.

We also visited the Cultural Center in K.L. where we picked up Val’s daughter from a field trip. We played a long like the kids and did some batik coloring- fun! There were lot’s of artist studios in the Cultural Center, most of them are doing batik or wood carving but also quite a lot painting in oil- mostly realistic . It was quite interesting.

We also brought some long awaited rain with us and we spotted this guy on a motor bike in the rain who is a bread seller going from village to village. Speaking of Bread…

Not only was Teo, Val’s and Penny’s Mom an avid bread maker which lead to several hours of conversations between her and my husband (who happens to love to bake bread too) but also did they all love to eat as much as we did and we went to the coolest yummiest places. BTW- I love that picture of Penny and her Mom- too cute!

And ate and drunk non stop – at places we would have probably never found or picked if we would have been there by ourselves.

I can in all honesty say that the food was another one of my faves and I think I have never eaten so much in my life…and…HA…I even dropped weight (cool because the workout clothes never left their initial spot in the suitcase – I am all in for the dumpling-hawker-street-food-diet ;) )

I also learned that some meals that might sound …ahem..as if you might not like them …like “Fish Head Soup” are actually the most delicious meals in the world (and you can get the soup with Fish Paste – which makes for an easier visual experience). I kid you not, I am still dreaming of this soup…drool. The soup is not in any of the pictures- LOL- but other delicious stuff.

And here I am – relaxed and ready to start teaching my Mixed Media Workshop weekend in Malaysia. Note to self: Tug in your blouse hanger before taking a selfie, knuckle head! ”

Val, Penny and their Mom were just the most amazing hosts! I learned so much about the people and the life in Malaysia…and the food ;) They opened their house and hearts and it was really special for me and my husband. Lot’s of things that we talked about and shared that are hard to write on a blog. I will always cherish this experience and I do know that I will see those 3 again somehow. They will always have a special place in my heart! Thank you!

I’m so glad to hear you had a great time! Aren’t Val, Penny and their Mum the best!! I went to Malaysia to teach for Scrap N Crop in 2009 and had the most wonderful time! I agree about KL, such a city of contrasts and diversity :) And we loved the food too!!!!!

Love seeing these awesome shots and hearing your wonderful stories. Makes me want to visit this beautiful part of the world….except for the long flight! Food sounds yummy…..you are very adventurous and I should be likewise!!! Looking good in your selfie, blouse hanger and all (which I would NOT have seen if you hadn’t pointed it out—but why I always cut them right off when I buy something—LOL)!!! Stampendous Stamps

One of the things that make me really giddy is when I spy someone using my new stamps by Stampendous or also my Stencils with StencilGirl Products So I thought once in a while I would feature the work of those wonderful talented people with a new Series called: designed by n*Studio features:…..

And today I feature: Limor Webber

Limor Webber is a mixed media artist and educator. She is a mother of two beautiful little girls that absolutely rule her world and a wife to a supportive husband. Limor is a technique and art medium addict! She can sit in her studio for hours trying to come up with new ideas and techniques that she can share with the world.

I met Limor on the Prima Education team and it has been great fun to be around her and her contagious smile and talent!

And here are some amazing projects that she created using my Stampendous! Signature Stamps and what she wrote about them:

For all you Mixed Media junkies, you know how we all have that one stamp set we keep on reaching for every time we create any project and we say to ourselves,” it’s just not complete without it”. Well that’s how I feel about all three of these stamp sets!! They never get put away, they have a permanent spot on my craft desk since the day I got them. The reason I love them so much as you can see is because they make fabulous background effects but can be used in a subtle way or as a more bold focus point on your project. Do you want to know a little secret that would make your heart sing?! The first day I opened up my sets and I pulled them out…. hiding behind the stamps were some fabulous bonus Stencils!!!!!. Needless to say they have become my new favorite staple in my creation! way to go Nathalie!!! you sure rocked these stamps sets out!.

Love those tags and yes, Limor does always have them very close at hand. Such depth and texture can be created with these stamps, I can see they’d be used often. Fantastic stamp sets…. They’re on my soon to be fulfilled wish list.

Powerhouse Canvas

Acrylic paint canvas Jersey City

The last weekend I buried myself into the studio to work on this canvas – and it made me pretty happy – I think you might see I was inspired by all the wonderful colors I had seen during my travels.

The building is an old powerhouse here in Jersey City, which is boarded up and there is work going on there- so we will see . I do love this building – I find it fascinating and since I am a big fan of the Tate Modern in London, which is housed in an old power station – I can see an art gallery in here, art studios and some open public space…but probably it will be shops and lofts or a mall – who knows.

I played with all kinds of acrylic media and techniques-I was in my happy happy place :)

Photos of my Asia Trip: Hong Kong Part III

DISCLAIMER: This blog post contains images of mating butterflies, drunken pigeons and bare breasted buddhas. If you have a problem with this, you might be better off looking at something else . Don’t email me to complain, don’t visit my blog anymore because I might post things like this again.

Last photos of Hong Kong before I move you on to Malaysia ;) One of the days we did a wonderful morning hike …we took one of those little beaner busses out to our starting point and it started off with loads of stairs…

on top we met those guys…that made my day. Afterwards it went through more forresty areas..which had bigger butterflies that liked to fly right at you. They also looked as if they had cowboy chaps on and would carry away little children…that was about all the exciting wildlife we saw..but nonetheless it was a wonderful hike.

One night we went for a fancy dinner at Hutong – it was soooo good

Besides …one dish…which fortunately came right in the beginning of the menu – so I could get over it quick ;)

Yes…the drunken pigeons. When they were served…heads on…I actually wished that I was drunk LOL. I tried to convince myself that looks are not everything…it is the inner qualities that count. Well I tried and I can assure you …not in this case. Drunken Pigeons…been there, done that, don’t have to try ever ever again.

My favorite dish for overall experience (taste and visual appearance) was the so called “Red Lantern” deep-fried soft shell crabs served in a basket of red chillies. Then the lid was lifted my eyes started watering. And the first two crabs hurt as it was sooo hot…after the crabs aired out a bit it was no problem anymore.

This was followed by a couple more delicious highlights. And the bathroom must have been one of the most beautiful restaurant bathrooms I have ever seen – the whole place was just beautiful – just too dark to take a photo ;)

The day after this we actually went to Malaysia- but on our way back to the U.S. we had another 1/2 day stay over in Hong Kong and we went to the Big Buddha

and they weren’t kidding when they said “Big Buddha”

Speaking of big…I have never seen incense this big!

Breathing got a bit heard though

Again the temple fascinated me. The colors, the details…I hope I do not bore you with those pictures but …

Life is too short not to travel and enjoy other cultures when you can. The pictures are beautiful. Just the experience of being able to eat dishes that are not the “common” variety, make for an even better and marvelous trip. You are so fortunate to be able to experience other amazing countries.

That is huge incense for sure. Love the temple pics and glad to see that I’m not the only one who takes pics of mating creatures. I have one from my honeymoon of turtles. Happy Monday!

Photos of my Asia Trip: Hong Kong Part II

Some more photos of my stay in Hong Kong. If you missed the first part- you can find it here.

We went to the Ten Thousand Buddhas Monastery. 430 steps towards the monastery .

Flanked on both sides by Buddhas in different poses and with different face expressions.

Pretty impressive..don’t you think?

The funny thing is …the buddhas outside are not the ones that gave the monastery the name.

12 Thousand+ mini buddhas in one of the temples are responsible for the name. (no photos allowed)

I loved stopping and looking at all those different buddhas. This one reminded me of a very close friend ;) She tends to make this expression every time you want to shoot a photo of her.

We were accompanied by monkeys that jumped around like crazy- all photos of them are blurry – such a monkey business ;)

The closer to the top we came the more elaborate the statues became. I wish I could read the signs – I wonder if they reveal names of them or meanings.

What strikes me most are the colors and the patterns. Just looking at this makes me happy- the colors so bold and so many details.

I loved those little pavillions.

This place was actually built in 1949 and is not really a monastery because no monks are living here. But it seems as a lot of celebrations were going on there.

It was well worth a visit and funny enough it wasn’t part of our travel guide… I would make it part of my personal travel guide. It is a bit hard to find, kind of like…ride to the end of the world , exit, follow this and that street, go to the street with the parking house and just go left up a beaten path that looks as if it leads to a dumpster…and then it doesn’t ;)

I would also recommend an early part of the day… good thing I have been working out a lot lately but the humidity and heat is making the hike up a bit hard.

After this we made our way to the Chi Lin Nunnery. Or lovingly called Chilling Nunnery by us.

While strolling around the temple we could hear the nuns – yes they were actually living there – chanting in a hall – the sound was carried throughout the temple – which was just amazing. We later saw them coming out but I referred from snapping photos. It felt not right.

In front of the Nunnery is the Nan Lian Garden – again an oasis in the middle of high risers. I love how the garden was laid out. Lot’s of small details again

and an awesome rock garden…with interesting signs. I have to admit I didn’t have the idea before I saw the sign…It made me wanna try it ;) I did not – no worries.

I loved these areas paved with these neatly stacked stones. Awesome texture and so interesting to look at.

Hope you enjoyed the monastery-nunnery tour in Hong Kong. Tomorrow some projects but then there will be more ;)

What an amazing trip!! Love all the photos you’ve shared . The colors and designs are so amazing! It would be tempting to make a sand picture in the rock garden! Lol! I agree with KathyP – want to see how you use these in art journals!

The rock garden pic would be a good inspiration for a stencil.
Love all the pics today. 1949, that would explain why the Buddas don’t have that classic look to them.

Fun! The monastery with the buddhas was on one of our favorite TV (celebrity game) shows here recently… It’s so cool to see you went to that place!
