Artfusion 2013 Recap or…Going Dutch is fun!

01ArtfusionNatKalbach

Birgit and I had so much fun with our Artfusion Mixed Media Weekend in Utrecht, The Netherlands this last weekend!

03ArtfusionNatKalbach

We had students from The Netherlands, Finland, England, Israel and Spain in our classes – 33 girls – all super sweet and mega talented and with lot’s of fun. Lot’s of smiles this whole weekend! Even when the wind hit back and splashed paint into faces ;)

02ArtfusionNatKalbach

Loved seeing all of them taking their own twist on the projects- like here in my Season Canvas Class – they did such beautiful canvases!

04ArtfusionNatKalbach

And it was awesome seeing my stencils being used by my students – Loved that so much- can’t even tell- LOL

05ArtfusionNatKalbach

We had a very artsy location and a good time during the classes, during lunch, dinner and at the saturday evening crop.

06ArtfusionNatKalbach

Here is a couple of us girls- some are missing on the picture – I had a blast with you all – I hope so much I will see you some day again …maybe…maybe… at…mmh who knows ;) (sorry Minna  – I had to steal this and the next photo from you :) )

Thank you all for coming from far and close by to our event and make it truly awesome!!! You rocked !!! It was amazing to see so many of you again and to make new friends. As we had talked with a group – it is an unbelievable inspiring hobby that brings people from all countries together.

07ArtfusionNatKalbach

And here is finally a picture of sweet Birgit and me- we totally forgot to have one taken  . I miss her already. Thank you Birgit for all your non-stop work to make our event happen! You are the best!

08ArtfusionNatKalbach

Wishing you a wonderful day and huge hugs…from truly happy but exhausted Nat :)

Jersey City and New York City Short Trip

NatKalbach_JC_01

Last week I went to the States to prepare some things for our move in September. We spent two days in Jersey City where we were looking at some apartments. On Wednesday I was strolling through Jersey City on my own and I have to say…I fell in Love with this city and now I am totally looking forward moving there!!!

NatKalbach_JC_02

Jersey City lies right across Lower Manhattan and with the Path (kind of like a train-subway) or with the fairy (update: some call it also Ferry – hahahha) you are in 10-15 minutes in Manhattan – pretty pretty cool.

NatKalbach_JC_03

Lot’s of old factory, warehouse and brown stones are part of the city and many are turned into amazing live or work or cultural areas. This power plant above is restored right now- I hope it will be a public space but who knows. Such an amazing building.

NatKalbach_JC_04

Lot’s of street art around and I loved the edgeiness of this city which reminded me of my neighborhood here in Hamburg 20 years ago.

NatKalbach_JC_05

NatKalbach_JC_06

NatKalbach_JC_07

And then in between those amazing amazing neighborhoods, just beautiful – did I mention I fell in Love with JC? LOL

NatKalbach_JC_08

I can so see myself living in this city- and that makes me also looking forward even more. It was a bit of a back and forth as we didn’t know where we would in the end move in NJ and so some days I was excited and some days I was a bit sad to leave Germany, now I feel like – whoooo – this is going to be so cool and it is going to be the right place for us. We are not ready yet to move totally out of a city…gotta face it ;)

NatKalbach_JC_09

The next day I took the path to Manhattan and strolled a bit around in the West Village. I found The Ink Pad – actually almost by accident- LOL.

NatKalbach_NYC_01

Lovely store, wonderful products and…ehem…..I got a bit of a joy infusion when I saw my crackle stencil hanging in the store :)))

NatKalbach_NYC_02

The best part of my trip was that I was meeting Michelle Hernandez. We had a blast – well I had- hehehehe ;) We went to a cuban restaurant and had a really good time, lot’s of chatting, lot’s of laughing and good discussions.

NatKalbach_NYC_03

NatKalbach_NYC_05

Michelle then took me on a little fun tour – and I saw some areas of the Village and Soho that I hadn’t been to before. And of course there was some street art spotting ;)

NatKalbach_NYC_04

And this one made me laugh so hard…LOL – so I leave you with this ;)

NatKalbach_NYC_06

It was a great and necessary trip, besides getting a lot of things done, it made me feel so much better about moving and we also saw an apartment that we fell in love with. Cross your fingers we get it…It would be the icing on the cake :)

And now off to prepare the next trip to  Art Fusion next weekend for my workshops with Birgit in the Netherlands :)

huge hugs

Ah It’s just my evil luck that I have to leave New York just as you arrive. Thank you so very much for the lunch and for answering all my annoying questions and for handling my obnoxious opinions of the past in stride. :) I had a great time and learned a whole heck of a lot. I LOVE Jersey graf- it’s so optimistic! You picked a hell of a town- it’s growing and picking up all the artists who can’t afford Brooklyn- in other words- you are going to find many friends and be very happy. YAY!
I plan to visit my town often so I will send you email updates and maybe we can meet up. HA! If you are in town that is! :)

One of the things I like most about your blog is that you always take and share the best photos, especially street art pics. My brother used to live in West Village – what a great area! I have heard about The Ink Pad but have never visited…do they hold classes? I would so be on a plane for a trip to NY and a Nathalie workshop :) Love that you “ran into” your own stencil….the price you pay to be a celebrity :)

Baltic Sea / Ostsee Scrap Event – Photos

What a beautiful weekend teaching at the Ostsee Scrap Event (Baltic Sea Event). The location was awesome – just a 15 minute walk from the beach, wonderful room with our own private terrace, wonderful students, great organiser and co-teacher and filling yummie food. What more can you ask for?

Here are some pictures of my morning stroll to the beach – it was awesome -almost no one at the beach – sun shining already – calm and relaxing. I walked for two hours and it totally relaxed me – good way to start then off the workshops :)

Lorraine, ohhh I love them too :) Yes those beach chairs are very common at the Baltic Sea and also the North Sea here in Germany. I looked into this after your comment and it looks as if actually those beach chairs – which we call beach baskets literally translated, were first made in Warnemünde Germany :) So I assume we can call it a typical German thing- which I wasn’t aware of. Fun :) Thanks for your question- it made me learn something new too :) huge hugs

Stockholm Scrap & Pearl Event- Photos

NathalieKalbach_SPE02

I had such a wonderful time in Sweden, Stockholm last weekend at the Scrap & Pearl Event. Sofia and Peter organized this amazing event where about 1000 people came to crop, craft and have a good time. 21 stores were also making sure the shopping fun got included. Here is a photo of the place before the event – add some table lines to the left and you might get a little feel of how big it was ;).

NathalieKalbach_SPE01

It was massive and I have the biggest respect for Sofia and Peter putting this event together. They did an AWESOME job organizing it! I have never seen such a huge amount of goodie bags and since I am used to packing kits which takes FOREVER – I can only imagine how much time went just into packing these – well actually I know how long it took the two of them plus their kids to pack them…you don’t even wanna know!

NathalieKalbach_SPE03

I taught 3 classes that were all sold out – and I had so much fun with my super talented and fun Swedish students. We laughed a lot. Here are some pictures of my Be Awesome, Be a Book Nut Class which I taught two times.

NathalieKalbach_SPE04

And here are a few ladies I caught to take a picture off after my Portrait of a Lady class, I still have to get better at taking photos at workshops ;)

NathalieKalbach_SPE05

Another highlight was as always meeting many wonderful new and also some people I know. Here is one of my most loyal online students Anne Kristin. It was so wonderful to finally meet her in person!

NathalieKalbach_SPE06

And Sara, who shared her beautiful book with me where she played along with our The Whatevers! So much fun to see this !

NathalieKalbach_SPE07

Kattiz from K-Designs who creates wonderful paper- lovveeee it- and I will actually teach a layout class with some of her paper soon at the Ostsee Scrap Event. Wonderful personality too! I will share some work with her papers soon :)

NathalieKalbach_SPE08

Anna Björklund who was one of my super talented Jumpstarters in this year’s Creative JumpStart. She is wonderful and I am so happy I had the chance to spent some time with her at breakfast!

NathalieKalbach_SPE09

And Sofia of course who rocked organizing the event and who makes me laugh a lot :)

NathalieKalbach_SPE10

Many many other amazing people I loved to meet- including my sweet Danish Friends and Mia and Per- too bad we didn’t take a photo! It was wonderful to see you again!

And here is a picture of the yummiest sweetest gift I have EVER received by a student. This cake is to die for and my husband agrees…I have to hide it from him – LOL – Thank you so much Ulrika- you are AWESoME and I still think you should open a cafe with homemade cake…maybe with a little craft area? !

Also thank you Gerd for the wonderful book you gave me and Tammy for the yummy Chocolate! I am sooo spoiled – I have the best students EVER!

NathalieKalbach_SPE12

And I know by now you might be tired of my pictures…but I cannot leave you without showing you this picture of my loved ones while talking to them online from Stockholm….the look at our cat makes me laugh soooo much. Poor guy- he could just not comprehend where the voice was coming from -LOL

Wishing you a gorgeous day

15 minutes plane rides, fairy tales and shadows or…Luxembourg Sightseeing

As promised I show some pictures of my half day sightseeing tour with Lydia in Luxembourg. Luxembourg is the 7 smallest country in the European Union – but oh it is a beauty. From Hamburg I flew in a small airplane, landed in Saarbrücken (still in Germany) after 1 hour and 10 minutes, when about two-thirds of the passengers left and we flew for 15 minutes (no kidding) with five people to Luxembourg. LuxembourgTour01_NatKalbach

Official languages are French, German and Luxembourgish – making it interesting to read street and shop signs, as there seems to be no consistency as to how languages are displayed. Sometimes you have all three, sometimes you have a street sign warning you in french that there is a curve ahead, just to be followed by a german sign telling you to slow down.

LuxembourgTour02_NatKalbach

The first sightseeing stop on monday was Echternach where we went to the Abbey of Echternach which was founded around 700.

LuxembourgTour03_NatKalbach

This sculpture fascinated me- especially with the shadow !

LuxembourgTour04_NatKalbach

I fell in Love with the windows- I love the pattern – I am sure you will see it somewhere again ;)

LuxembourgTour06_NatKalbach

Echternach is located at the River Sauer, you walk over a bridge and you are in Germany- so I went for two seconds ;) (note the entry sign with the unofficial abbreviation of Germany…very outdated)

LuxembourgTour05_NatKalbach

From here we went to Luxembourg City. This is a fortification also called Three Acorns in front of the Museum of Modern Art. Actually this is almost all that is left of the fortification. It was super pretty- and each of the towers had an acorn on top.

LuxembourgTour08_NatKalbach

This is the Gëlle Fra – luxembourgish for the golden lady which is a war memorial.

LuxembourgTour09_NatKalbach

Very fairy tale like are some of the views- I was amazed at all the old buildings, some built into the rocks- and it was wonderful having Lydia as a tour guide as she knew so much about the city and history.

LuxembourgTour10_NatKalbach

Loved this old tower called hollow tooth

LuxembourgTour11_NatKalbach

And there is a last view of the old part of Luxembourg before I head out to my weird bus-stop-like flight back to Hamburg ;)

LuxembourgTour12_NatKalbach

And the moral of the story…Luxembourg is definitely worth a trip. I am so happy Lydia talked me into staying a day longer after the workshops to do some sightseeing!

Hope you enjoyed the little journey with me .

huge hugs

nat

    Hey Nat,

as pleased to read a posting on my home country I am, I have to say I’m not too glad about the order of the languages ;)
Luxemburgish should be mentionned first as it’s the language spoken by each Luxemburgish person and very important for national identity. French and German are – although very frequent – still second languages to us that we only learn in school (therefor far from beeing mother tongues). We have been struggling for ages to get our language accepted as a language and not as a German dialect and the struggle is still going on…

Concerning the consistency it is to say, that Luxemburgish didn’t have a lobby as written language until the early 80ies when Luxemburgish officially became a national language. The division although is rather clear: Luxemburgish is used for all kind of spoken language (radio, tv), German as the language of print and other media (press, internet), French as the language of administration and official documents, although there is a law that says that administration has to reply in the language it was addressed to. The impression that French is the most common language results from about 60% foreigners working in the country (mainly Portuguese and French people) and particularly in gastronomy and retail, but no Luxemburger will ever speak French with his family as far as they are all Luxemburgish ;)

And yet another small correction: the Three Acrons are by far not the only remainings of the fortification. Actually the whole city is built on the fortification. The surrounding wall is still there and so are the 23 km of casemates and bomb-proof rooms within them and yet other smaller remains like the Spanish Towers or the Heiliggeist Citadel. The historic center and the fortification are even part of the UNESCO World Heritage.

In short it is one of the prettiest cities in central Europe and I’d be glad to show you some more places at your next visit :)

    Bye
    Nadine

Workshops at J.P. Morgan in Luxembourg

Last weekend I had the pleasure to teach 3 workshops at J.P. Morgan in Luxembourg. I was invited by the Social Committee and it was so much fun. It was an amazing crowd of people- very international and with lot’s of languages involved. I was sticking to my two- English and German…my attempt to learn Luxembourgish was poor ;)

Luxembourg01_NatKalbach

We had a really great room…the canteen- which was PERFECT for a workshop – lot’s of light, lot’s of tables, lot’s space, lot’s of yummie snacks ;)

Luxembourg02_NatKalbach

The first class was my Yawp PanPastel Class on Saturday afternoon and we dabbled into a lot of techniques and the students loved playing with the different yummie colors and techniques.

Sunday morning I taught the Über*Media Acrylic Paint Class first. We covered lots of techniques and made a big pile of background pages for art journals. Not many pictures here- obviously I forgot to take pictures

Next up was the Season /Texture Canvas Class. It was awesome. Most of the students never worked with Acrylic Paints..some even stated to never have held a paint brush in their hand (hard to believe- I know) and they had so much creative fun!

Everyone was very open to try out things, but the best was…they had no finished picture in their head when they started, which made them more open to try new things – I loved that.

So we had a little Monet inspiration going on here

and some Pearl Jam inspired texture galore here

Thank you so much everyone who took the classes- it was a wonderful weekend with you and you inspired me a lot too :)

Thank you also to the J.P. Morgan Social Committee for inviting me and to Lydia for inviting me to her home and taking more than good care of me ! You are fab!

I will show you some of my sightseeing pictures in Luxembourg next…what a beautiful little country!

BTW – if you are interested in having me come and teach at your event, store or for a certain private or company group – please feel free to contact me !

You can also check out my In -Person Workshops here and see if I am close soon to where you live or check out my Online Workshops here to take classes whenever you want.

Have a gorgeous day

iTravel…or…my favorite apps and tools for traveling with my iPad

iTravel

I wanted to write a little bit about some of my favorite apps and tools for traveling with my iPad. Two years I bought my iPad …and it is like my super friend ever since. Especially since I travel so much for workshops it became of a huge value. As you know luggage restrictions are tight and especially when you teach you have a lot of stuff in your suitcases: Kits, tools, supplies…if you ever saw my suitcase when I came teaching at your local store you saw it all. When I closed my accounting for 2012 I was shocked at the amount of costs of extra luggage and shipping I paid for last year to get my supplies and kits to workshop locations.

iTravel01

Before iPad or BiP ;) I used to pack stacks of books and magazines in my suitcase because I love to read. BiP I had a travel journal and an idea journal. A book with stuff about the workshops. Pencils, a little bag with art supplies, my laptop for emails and if I needed to work on stuff, tickets, calendar, travel papers, maybe a dvd so I could watch a movie of my liking when on a longer journey…well you get the picture.

Nowadays I pack for all the mentioned above just my iPad. And since I know there must be people out there that love their tablet too-  let me show you some of my faves. I will not state the “obvious” like the kindle reader, the magazine reader- although you might wanna know which magazines I heart – LOL – instagram etc.

Travel04

I have a lot of creative or fun apps as you can see- I love them all- LetterMPress – if you love Letterpress- and that was actually btw how I created my logo for Creative Jumpstart 2012 and some other logos. ArtRage pretty cool- but also VERY intense. A nice app if you want to play with different brushes and paint media and with painting over photos and such. Zen Brush was one of my first apps- and I still like it a lot. Also awesome for just drawing and sketching thinks or doodling along while waiting for the journey to end or start…

Travel09

but my favorite one is my Paper 53 App– which my husband showed me several months ago and which I bought every single update for it like a crazy chicken and I am probably the only one who is always hoping there might be an update for it when opening the update folder

With this app you can draw and sketch, do watercoloring etc.

Travel05

I use it a lot to play when I travel and sketch down some ideas- you can even mix your own colors- which I think is brilliant and I love it sooo much.

Travel07

(see the tool? The brush…I will talk about this in a second ;) )

itravel11

some of these ideas get more played with on real paper or in an art journal later

aj

you can also create several journals and I often write into them too – with my sensu brush& stylus- which I will tell you in a second about

Travel06

OK- now I told you several times I would tell you about this brush and the stylus…well here is my favorite tool right now for my iPad. It is called sensu and it is a brush and stylus in one.

From their website: “The rubber stylus is exposed when the brush is closed. This stylus is great for sketching and writing or as a general navigation tool. Grasp Sensu near the nib section and pull it out of the protective cap. You will reveal the capacitive bristles of the artist brush. Insert the rubber stylus into the cap and the cap becomes a handle for your brush.”

Brilliant! It really does give you the feel as if you handle a brush. Yes it is still digital what you do- but it feels way more natural. If you do some sketching and painting on your tablet  – this is the best thing I have found so far! I love that it is so small and you have the protection too – I am just in Love! I saw at Paperworld that they will also bring out just the brush for the tablet  – without the stylus which will be much cheaper then. But for me the point is actually having both because I write and sketch on my iPad too. I am very pleased with the stylus too. If you have a good stylus though you might want to wait till the sensu with just the brush is on the market.

Travel03

Another one of my faves is Dropbox – might be boring for some of you- but oh I love dropbox. You can save files on dropbox, share folders with other etc. If you don’t know dropbox at all- you have to figure it out: But what I love about the app for the iPad is that I can upload files in my Dropbox folder- pdf, word documents – so I can for example upload the lists for the materials for my workshops etc. And once I have opened those documents while still online on my iPad…I can actually open them from now on even offline on my iPad. And that is pretty cool. I cannot tell you the times that this has saved me lot’s of problems and headaches when traveling and without my computer at home.

Travel02

Oh and another tool -is my keyboard case for the iPad- I got it from my husband for christmas. It also serves as a closure and protection which is really good- but of course the best thing is that you have a keyboard when you write emails or text that is longer. Doing this on the iPad I find just hideous and annoying.

itravel10

The only funny and weird thing is- that as soon as you see your iPad more in a usual Monitor way- you forget that you still need to touch it as there is no mouse. I cannot even tell you how often I have tried to find my mouse pad or the mouse next to it…ahem ;)

oK- now – there is more apps I love – but I think that should do for now. I hope you found it a bit interesting :)

If you use a tablet what are your favorite apps or tools?

Have a gorgeous day

also I recommend you try a Jot stylus by Adonit (some minor maintenance is all that is required to keep this puppy in top working order) and another awesome, albeit minimalist app is SketchTime . I am attaching a link so show you what I have done in sketchtime this past year. http://www.margilaurin.ca/Site/Digital_Painting.html

Thank you very much for sharing Nat! The apps you enjoy seem very cool, so I’ll definitely have to check them out soon! I did just recently get my iPad though, so as of right now there aren’t too many apps that I would consider to be favorites. There is one app called DISH Anywhere that I’ve really enjoyed as of late because of all the traveling I do for my job at DISH. That app lets me watch all of my TV shows from home, live or recorded, anywhere I go in the world! It’s perfect for a TV addict like me because with it I always have entertainment, and a way to keep up with my shows when I’m half way across the country.

I am a bit behind the iTimes, :) but got my first iPhone for Christmas and I LOVE IT!! I can’t believe how amazing it is, and that my old Droid was really that crappy! Haha! So, I still live in the age of BiP, but hope to make the jump at some point. You’ve made a great sales pitch, and I love the drawings you’ve done with the different apps and the organizational tips, too!

Great post Natalie! My husband has an iPad and uses like a madman. Truth is, I bought for myself, but at the time — it was right after it came out — there weren’t that many apps and I found that I just did not utilize it so I gave to him. Now I am thinking about a mini in the not too distant future, so it was fun to read all that you do with it. Thanks.

Paperworld Frankfurt 2013 – A different kind of experience

Paperworld2013

Many people and manufacturers from the States asked me to tell them about Paperworld in Frankfurt in Germany. Since the last years CHA Winter and Paperworld were ALWAYS on the same weekend, I have never been able to attend Paperworld, since I went to CHA the last four winters. BUT this year the CHA convention was on purpose and with regards to Paperworld scheduled earlier. Good move CHA- now just move the thing two weeks AFTER Paperworld- that would make all of us even happier ;)

pw_01

What is Paperworld?

It is the leading international fair for paper, office supplies and stationary with an extra exhibition area called creative world, which is the world’s biggest trade fair for the creative sector. Based on the Paperworld Creative section, the fair is the highlight for the hobby, crafts and artists’ requisites segments. There is also Christmas world…but I have not even set food there…so I spare you with details…I think we all get the picture ;)

pw_02

So here are some observations from the Creativeworld at Paperworld in comparison to  CHA:

  • This convention is HUGE – the whole area is unbelievable…CHA is like a super-duper mini dollhouse in comparison. And if you think your feet hurt after being at CHA…pffff – LOL…peanuts
  • You will meet many people you met at CHA at Paperworld – mainly Europeans
  • Allmost all booths are huge – tall and in a very simplistic but in a beautiful way set up
  • The focus is definitely on the product – almost no projects in the booths – unless there is a demo or an artist playing

pw_03

  • although gaining new costumers is a goal at every trade show, the focus here is equally on cultivating existing business relationships
  • networking is key here – all people are treated nicely – I actually liked this and found this a very big difference- at CHA I often sense that you are only treated nice if they know you or they have the feeling you could be beneficial. But I still remember those days when nobody knew me there and I was treated not nice by certain people or manufacturers – it is not a good thing to do…You should be nice to people and not in a fake way plus…you always meet twice in your life…don’t forget!
  • Everything is orderly…yes I know…what to expect, it is Germany- LOL- but there is also a lot of rules that are very german – the way how to talk with people etc. Although we are not flowery…we have lot’s of unwritten rules. The most known one is the informal and the formal You…but that is the easiest one- LOL

pw_04

  • Almost every booth has tables and chairs- often several – that are for meetings and talks, most booths have a fridge and coffeemaker or even a little serving station – as it is key to sit down and talk business
  • Most of the times those tables and chairs are occupied at all booths- and it is a lot of appointments ahead
  • Scrapbooking is not really a big element in the Craft and Hobby and Art Section in Europe yet. Booths dealing mainly with Scrapbooking Paper or Scrapbooking Supplies were tiny and very different from CHA (besides our booth – at Scrapbook Adhesives by 3L – that booth was WAY bigger, but also because you need Adhesives in all kinds of areas in the Craft Section :) )

pw_05

  • Trendwatch in Europe was a bit similiar as to the US – lot’s of homedecor, Washi Tape (gosh I am outwashi-taped- really!) and wearable art (upcycling recycling)
  • taking photos is not very common during the convention – in fact most booths even do not let you take photos and it makes it calmer – there is a lot of competition there and everyone is checking out the newest products – some are not seen before, some are only announce online (some manufacturers work directly releasing toward paperworld)
  •  A huge amount of retailers etc from Eastern European and Asian countries were at the show

pw_06

  • The food is way more healthy and better than at CHA in the Convention hall (I know you expected only sausages there…but no ;) )
  • Most booths are fine art manufacturers and wholesale booths and then comes wholesalers for craft supplies and then a whole lot of different little booths from all kinds of craft and art sections
  • The show hours were very long…to tell you the truth too long, we were all exhausted. 9 am to 6 pm were the show hours -CHA is mostly 10 am – 5 pm. Add the time for booth prep and booth closing and you are on your feet, talking non-stop for 10 hours a day.

pw_07

It was fun playing with Scrapbook Adhesives by 3L new and old products – while watching Jimmy Leslie an  awesome artist from NJ paint at the Liquitex booth – what a nice and down to earth guy.- we chatted a lot (I might have pulled a squeaky excited star crush voice when I talked first to him ;) – always embarrassing to start with “You don’t know me, but I know you” LOL- ) and gosh I couldn’t wait to come home and get my fingers messy with paint.

pw_08

And let’s not forget the fun evenings I had -here with Jing from Quatar, Barbara from Rome and Anna from Poland- it was so good to see the girls again and ….also Rudi from Austria- who took the picture ;) – and spent some more time with them when usually at conventions!

pw_09

And of course spending time and working  with Betina at the 3L booth was the best! The crew from 3L/Scrapbook Adhesives by 3L is amazing and I am very fortunate to work with them for many years.

So…that was probably more when you actually wanted to know about paperworld…and please just because I compared CHA and Paperworld- there is no real comparison since the emphasis in these shows is different…but hey….apple and pears are still fruits ;) LOL-

Have a good one

Nat

Oh Nat, obviously being German, I knew immediately what you meant about formal and informal rules. But you really hit the nail on the head when you said that at CHA you are not treated very nice if you are not well known. Yeah, my first CHA visit (I only have been twice) drove home the fact that even in the papercrafting world it’s a cut throat business. Sad. People who have a “next door neighbor” type of personality online, are totally different in person. I don’t mean that in a “bad” way, but it really broke my heart to realize that this hobby is so cliquish. Anyway, one of these days….. I’m coming home to Germany!!!!

Fantastic post! I’ve often wondered about Paper World and this helps tremendously!! Do they also have seminars (business) and/or creative workshops like CHA? or is it only tradeshow? Are parts open to the public or is it only the trade?

    Reply

    • Nathalie Kalbach

      |

as said it is a trade show only and not open to the public and they take this really more serious then CHA. I assume they do have seminars – but to tell you the truth, I hadn’t even had time to look at it. They had creative mini workshops on the floor – but very short. This is about networking more than learning how to use things – surprisingly. But especially in fine art- they get and pay people to come to stores and teach how to use it ,after purchasing. It is a different approach when in the craft and hobby area.

Leaving on a Barbie Jet Plane…or Short trip to Santa Barbara

After CHA I went to Santa Barbara on the tiniest plane (will show picture later) aka Barbie Jet ever. My hubs had left Hamburg earlier in January to work there and I was going to visit him for 3 days :) He picked me up at the tiniest airport ever – when I sent a short message “landed” , he replied with “I know- I can see you” – and that was not a joke- LOL. When I came out of the plane I saw him at the gate.

CHA_35

I love California- I am a summer and sun girl…looking out of the window to this…makes me happy!

CHA_36

3 days filled with the beach

CHA_37

yummie meals with and without friends and family :)

CHA_38

awesome street art which was even more awesome up close

CHA_39

and funky stuff

CHA_40

and some shopping for head bands and earrings

CHA_41

and sightseeing in the old court house of Santa Barbara

CHA_42

indulging the jurassic park feeling aka- vegetation

CHA_43

and did I mention beach? …

CHA_44

and a road trip to the mountain town Ojai – loved it

CHA_45

Visiting the coolest bookshop I have ever been to: Bart’s Books- which is in and out-side at the same time

CHA_46

spending time with cousin Beth and hubs

CHA_47

oh…and did I mention the beach? ;)

CHA_48

And then it was time to leave Santa Barbara on my little Barbie jet again ;)

CHA_49

to start a torture journey- which I didn’t know of at the beginning. As there was ice and snow in Frankfurt and the trip ended in a 27 hour trip with cancelled flights and 5 1/2 hour train trips in the end…and ….luggage that took 3 days to get home

CHA_50

here is the iced window of the plane we were waiting for kick off for an hour before they cancelled that one too and we had to leave the plane again. But in the end…who cares…LOL- I am home, I had an amazing time and it is good to be home with kitty and hubs…well technically speaking I am right now when you read this again in Frankfurt to work at Paperworld Convention…this time with carry on luggage…might be better ;)

What was the smallest airport you have ever been to?

Have a gorgeous weekend
