Jumping with… Cheiron Brandon – A CJS Interview Series

So happy to share today another great interview with one of our Creative JumpStart 2020 teachers: Cheiron Brandon. I have known Cheiron now for a while and she was also a wonderful addition to my Creative Squad a few years back.

A little about Cheiron: Cheiron works by day in the world of finance but returns to her studio at night to refocus, rejuvenate, and explore another important aspect of her life – creating! She is an extremely talented card maker and mixed media artist and both teaches classes monthly in NYC and enjoys taking classes to expand her artsy skills. In this interview she speaks about balancing her career and her art, and she talks about how creative activities improve all aspects of her life – from ways of dealing with problems at the office, having the courage to try new things, and even realizing the power of artmaking to bring joy into your life and surrounding relationships. Wow. Yup there’s a lot of great stuff in this interview :)

Please enjoy this Jumping with… Cheiron Brandon Interview!

Thank you Cheiron!

Jumping with… Tonia Jenny – A CJS Interview Series

So happy to share with you today a special video interview I did with one of our Creative JumpStart 2020 teachers: Tonia Jenny. This is Tonia’s first year with CJS and because I have known her a few years already, I am very excited that she is joining our awesome lineup this year.

A little about Tonia: Tonia was an editor for many years for North Light craft and art books where I met her, before she started her own editorial, writing, and life coaching biz. And of course she is also a super talented and versatile mixed media artist, who is very attuned to self exploration and also seeing the potential in everyday materials and items. I think you will love seeing her talk about her creative philosophy and also you may find it inspiring to hear how she approaches tackling new tools, media, and artistic challenges, because hey, Creative JumpStart is all about having fun while trying some new things :) And… she talks about the most creative job application I have probably ever heard about. You don’t want to miss it LOL

Please enjoy this Jumping with… Tonia Jenny Interview!

Thank you Tonia!

You can learn more about Tonia Jenny here on her website and also here on Facebook and Instagram.

Art Journal Flip Through – 09/2019

I wanted to share a little Flip Through video of my newly finished art journal.

I keep about 4-5 journals at the same time so they are always filled with an eclectic mix. This one brings back some good memories (from just a few days ago lol) from the Stencilbop Challenge – the place to go if you need inspiration for using those stencils. Looks like there’s also some playing in there from my rubber stamp release this past spring – loved making patterns with those.

Do you keep more than 1 art journal? How quickly do you fill them up?

Outside the Box – Art Journal

“Sometimes trying to think outside the box ends up in thinking right in the box!”

I began this page by sketching a figure… but sometimes what you don’t know is how an art journal spread came together- see me fighting off my cat and spilled ink – and then just deciding to live with it on a weird Monday afternoon in this video:

Although it was fun to have Pretzel’s paw make a cameo, arting with your cat can be tricky. I don’t recommend it lol

But I do recommend just going with what happens when you are working. The spilled ink and all! Actually to bring my page together I used my Paint Splat Mixed Media Chip as a stencil (very fitting with my messy process that day). And I added a stamp from the Fanfare set too.

Here are some of the supplies I used:

Art Journal Flip Through – 05/2019

I wanted to share a little Flip Through video of my newly finished art journal. I started this one in September 2018.

I keep about 4-5 journals at the same time. This is an art journal I made by hand, from start to finish. It’s something I’ve gotten more into and it’s a fun skill to learn. You can take my online workshop BYO Art Journal and start binding your own unique journals too.

Hope you enjoyed the flip through!

I love looking over your shoulder while you flip through your journal.
How did you film this? Do you put your camera on a tripod and angle it down?

    Loved it Nat!
Be brave enough to let yourself be bad is a hard one for me…really need to let go of the need to do things “right”.

The Small Things in Life – Art Journal

I created this Art Journal spread on a snowy day last week – as you can probably guess :)

The lady is drawn on deli paper, stamped and pasted into the journal. I stamped with different of my ArtFoamies Designs and then painted with grey and white. I like how it came out.

For the journaling I used a bamboo sketching pen and ink – I love using a bamboo sketching pen – have you ever seen my video I once made of the match made in heaven? It is a bit older but you might still find it interesting to see how I use those pens with the ink

Art Journal Flip Through 12/2017

Just in time for a new year I finished one of my art journals. I am keeping about 4-5 journals at the same time, sometimes I send one out to a publisher and then it takes a couple months before I get it back or I work in several at the same time – anyway- this one in the video started in 2015 and it ends in December 2017 – some pages make me cringe- some I would love to do similar stuff again.

I think it is interesting to see how my style changed in one book and a good way to check on your progress :) Hope you enjoyed this!

Great journal! Is it the large Dyan Reaveley one? Are most of your art journals that size or do you work in smaller ones as well.

Thank you Lisa- this is the letter sized /A4 sized Dyan Reaveley journal. I do mostly work in that size even when I make my own journal -and I always work double spread.

The Sketchy History of Pencils

As some of you might know I live in the old Pencil #2 Factory in Jersey City. While there are no more pencils being made in my building, there is still the General Pencil Company which still operates here in Jersey City. I try to buy a lot of pencils (and also brush cleaner) from General Pencil Company because I love that they are right here and produce locally. No wonder I was totally happy to see this video by NPR’s Skunk Bear “A Sketchy History of Pencils” .

I love seeing how art supplies are being made. What art manufacturer would you like to visit to see how they make things?

Enjoyed this video! Fascinating to see how pencils are made. I’d love to visit the Golden paint factory and see how they make all those fabulous colors.
