Art Journaling Live 2015 – Workshop in Arlington, Texas -June18

AJL_TeachersArt_2

So stoked to teach along my friends Julie Fei-Fan Balzer, Dina Wakley and MaryBeth Shaw an Art Journaling LIVE class on June 18 in Arlington, Texas.

My part of the workshop is called “Tooling Around

Let’s tool around and make the most of your supplies! Use brayers, brushes, palette knives, stamps, and stencils and other inexpensive tools along with acrylic paints and media in different ways. Learn how to create unique and layered backgrounds in your art journal. Create dimension and texture by painting, scraping, stamping, stenciling and glazing. All techniques in this class can be used outside your art journal too—think mixed-media projects, canvases, and even paper crafting projects. The sky is the limit.

Learn how to:
• Get more use out of familiar and unfamiliar tools.
• Work with paints and mediums to create compelling pages.
• Use stamps in new ways to make layered backgrounds.

You can read all details about the workshop the four of us are teaching together and sign up here.

Special Note: when you purchase a ticket to Art Journaling LIVE you will also receive an ALL ACCESS PASS to the Great American Scrapbook Convention happening on-site throughout the weekend at the Arlington Convention Center.

I hope you will join us- cannot wait to see you!

Trying to learn Finnish or … Europe Tour is coming up!

I cannot believe I am leaving for my little Europe tour already in  1 1/2 weeks. I am so excited.

paintsliquitex

All the paints are shipped and waiting for us (thanks to Liquitex for all the help!!!), a new suitcase is ordered after the last one broke on the trip to Oklahoma and I am starting to think of the temperatures in the different places I will be …from super hot to …maybe a bit cold ;)

First stop will be Madrid, Spain on May 30th for Cuchy and my 4th Art Mesa Mixed Media Event !

There are still some spots available- so if you are in the area :) – Sign up and join us!

Then I will stop over in Germany for a couple days to visit my loved ones in my old home :) I am so looking forward to see my peeps and I have a whole list of what I want to eat and where I want to go and…oh wait..I only have 3 days…mhhh !

Next stop is Turku, Finland June 6&7 for Matka Luovuuteen together with my friend Birgit Koopsen.

There are only 2 more seats available- so if you are in the area- come and join us!

After Finland I will spent some time with Birgit in her home in The Netherlands …we have creative fun plans! Maybe instead of just chatting we will actually even paint together- we will see ;)
And last but not least a stop in Ede, The Netherlands on June 13&14 for the De Craftorij Retreat 2015

There are still a couple seats left and you can sign up for Saturday, Sunday or both days!

Working on getting everything ready on time – and trying to learn some new words ….like:

  • Leikkuualusta askarteluveitsen kanssa käytettäväksi

This means Cutting Mat in Finnish …I think I will fail this language …off to learn Cutting Mat in Dutch and Spanish – maybe I am better there – I am sure I will make a fool of myself trying – LOL

DOEI (that means Bye in Dutch …one of the few words I know!) – have a gorgeous day!

About weird paths, art, rejection and on keeping on going

Nat Collage

Connie from 21 Secrets recorded a fun conversation with me with some fun questions about my journey as an artist, about my art itself, persistence, and how to deal with rejection and there is no shame , and other things … I had a great time – I always love when questions make you think and realize things for yourself.

Here is the interview it is about 45 mins long (boy yes…I have a lot to say – LOL)  – hope you enjoy it :)

Thanks Connie for having this fun conversation and also for having me for the 21 Secrets Spring Workshop.

Raw Canvas Staining

StainedMessageCanvas

Lately I am addicted to Raw Canvas Staining and painting. Something about this raw material just draws me in.

You might have noticed – I am not the only one :) You can spot the trend of paint stained material on a lot of clothes and home decor items this season. And some of this- you can just make yourself and have an individuell look – here I made my own pillow cases which fit exactly to our living room style and color wise!

StainedPillowsNatkalbach

I love the texture and layers you can archive through layering acrylic inks, soft body acrylic paints and markers and I love the versatility of what you can do with the stained raw canvas later on. You can stretch the canvas yourself on stretcher bars and hang it up, you can sew something, you can work on raw canvas totes, purses, aprons, you can use the stained canvas for your art journal covers, as elements in your mixed media collage, patches …you name it …endless possibilities.

I taught my Raw Canvas Class in March in Toronto and we had heaps of fun – exploring different techniques and possibilities and then having each of the student create a pillow case so that they had something to bring home as a finished project.

I will teach this Raw  Canvas Staining class again this month on May 16 at The InkPad in NYC. The location is the Westbeth Community Center – so we have lots of space!

NowStainedCanvas

I will show you how to apply the medium and how to use it so that it works, I will bring Liquitex Acrylic Inks, Paints, and Markers and more for you to work with. We will play with patterns, mark making, stamping, mono printing and stenciling. I will bring lot’s of extra raw canvas for you to play with and if you want you can bring a pillow case or a canvas tote or bring muslin as a different fabric – to create a finished project at the end of the class and create something with the newly learned skills and knowledge. I promise I throw in some extra thick german accent and some jokes  ;) and ….on a more serious note- loads of extra tips and tricks :)

You find more infos and details as well as the supply list and sign up info here at  The InkPad. There are still a couple seats open.

I hope to see you there!

What is an Art Journal? or … When the Why is clear the How is easy!

Art Journal …What is this thing? Let me try to explain in this video in my thick dscherman accent ;)

I art journal for different reasons:

  • to try out now techniques or art supplies
  • to get me creatively into swing before I paint
  • to get emotions and thoughts visually out
  • to try something that I will later apply in one form or the other on a canvas

So an art journal for me is a safe creative playground ;)

Now that you know

canbeanythingquotesm

or in other words, now that you know You are the Boss of your Art Journal …wouldn’t you wanna try it out? Come and join me for my new Art Journaling Online Class starting tomorrow – May 1st, 2015 – Art Journaling Demystified

We had a blast and learned so much in such a short time. This has given me confidence to work far more successfully with some of the Liquitex gels and varnishes. It also pushed me to take my work in a much less “safe”and infinitely more interesting direction. Nathalie, you are a wonderful teacher! Please come back to Oklahoma again.

More Workshops: The InkPad in NYC and 21 Secrets

RawCanvasStainingWSAd2

I am teaching this Raw Canvas Staining Class at The InkPad in New York City on May 16, 2015 – 10.30am – 5pm

The technique of painting on unprimed, raw canvas is most often associated with artists such as Morris Louis, Kenneth Noland and Helen Frankenthaler just to name a few.

Color-field artists poured, dripped, or brushed thinned paints onto the canvas that soaked through the surface and stained the fabric, creating a velvet-like appearance.

Join me in exploring fun techniques of staining and painting raw canvas and open a whole new creative world to apply these techniques on stretched canvases, pillow cases, bags and home decor items or even clothes.

You will download an eBook which contains written text, loads of videos and photos. I am super thrilled that I was asked to participate.

What I teach? The Story Within a Story

For me art journaling is visual story telling. It might not be a story that everyone can read but I can read it and that is all that counts. All my stories consist of many viewpoints and layers – thoughts, emotions and the story itself. I love to express the complexity of a story by building up layers and dimension through various techniques and texture.

In this workshop I would like to walk with you through my art journaling process. I will show you various layering techniques and I will tell you why and how I am doing what I am doing.

Join me in telling a creative story within a story.

How much does it cost?

Right now the PRESALE is happening !
