Blog: art journal techniques

Remember or…Excited for the roads to be traveled

NathalieKalbach_RememberAJ01

Played a bit around in my art journal using my new Oldtimer Stencil and Liquitex Acrylic Inks. I  collaged a bit on the background and tried some new stamps I found in a junk yard kinda store in the neighbor hood and then sprayed with Liquitex Spray inks over the oldtimer stencil and then rubbed over the Acrylic Inks-

NathalieKalbach_RememberAJ02

Love how intense the colors got and how the spray painted areas got so much dimension.

Hope you have some time for creating today!

Take a Shower Art Journal Page…or Negative Circuit Stencil

Loved creating this art journal page using my new Stencil Girl Product Circuit Stencil

NathalieKalbach_CircuitShower01

The Journaling says “Shower in the good things of life and your heart will shine”.

I had created a background with Dylusions Spray Paints and had it in my art journal for later usage. Something I do often when I spray a stencil is using the excess paint on top of the stencil for a different project as a negative.

Here I had sprayed  onto a different page in the art journal with Liquitex Professional Spray paint

IMG_4611

I then simply flip the stencil over to a different page- either already prepared with a painted background or onto a white one – and brayer over it to get the excess paint over.

NathalieKalbach_CircuitShower05

Which can then result in something like this

NathalieKalbach_CircuitShower03

And then I took it from there to create my art journal page. And yes…I might be I am biased regarding my own stencil but boy do I love the negative outcome of it too. So basically you get a pretty cool two-in-one design.

NathalieKalbach_CircuitShower02

BTW…did you spy something else on the page? ;) ;) ;)

Have a wonderful day!

    Hi!
I just love this Art Journal. :) And the stencil – WOW! :) I can barely wait for Scrap-Perra to get them at his store.

I wanted to ask you if it is ok, for you, if I borrow this page for a lift challenge for the Swedish inspirational blog http://www.swescrapbook.blogspot.com Me and my DT members will be using it as an inspiration, and create an Art Journal from that. Is that ok?

My note to myself is to keep to my commitment to only go to the few mandatory blogs I have to see every morning (yours and Julie’s), check my email and get off the computer! I unsubscribed from everything (art stores, art deals, other blogs) on my email that could pull me into wanting more stuff. It will all still be there after I take this loong break. : ) More time to create!

Thank Yourself ….OR….Remove the Splinters

Splinters

a new artjournal page. I am one of these people who like to run around with splinters in their feet..kind of like …maybe if I ignore them or pretend they are not there, they will not hurt as much. But …guess what…they need to be removed…and then you thank yourself. I did this this month with a splinter that hurt for many years…I feel better already… I am healing…. :)

Splinters2

I played with a lot of stuff here- with: USArtquest Mica Color and Perfect Pigments, Liqutex Acrylic Paint and Spraypaint, Crafter’s Workshop Templates, Posca and Zig markers, Cocoa Daisy Banner Stamp, 7Gypsies Tag, FastFoodChain-Paperbag with awesome writing on it etc. Essentially everything that was close to me when I was traveling to New Jersey :)

Artjournaling seems to fulfill two main needs for me: 1. Getting emotions out and 2. playing with artmedia for new ideas and techniques

If you artjournal what are your main reasons to do it?

huge hugs

nat

My journal is a visual way of talking. I think in images and colors not alphabets and words. When I work I try to get out what I feel inside. But sometimes I just try to do something… anything… otherwise I feel stopped up and lost.

My art journal is filled with “pouring out thoughts” – thoughts I can crasp or perhaps the subconscious… I love it. Often it shows me a new way or a fun picture of something thats in my mind.

I absolutely love love love love this. The idea of splinters being stuck in accidentally, sticking around with us (sometimes unknown that they’re there at first) and then they hurt to get out– cause they’re really stuck… that hits home! Love love love. Plus, you did pretty awesome things here with your colors… adoring the visual elements of your page. –

I have a journal that I play in. It is for trying and experimenting or just letting go. You have to understand my background— I have a twin sister. She got all the art and music genes while I got math and science. She would paint, draw, etc and I just could not. I had no talent and would get frustrated trying. But you know what? I started trying mixed media last year and now I am having fun trying to play with paint. Sometimes it is still not very good but I try and am enjoying it.

I art journal to use it as a diary and I like the freedom of not having to “get it right” in terms of playing with supplies. I want my LO’s to look nice but with my art journal I can just do what I want. Crazy but true.

Balzer Designs’ Art Journal Every Day – my fast forward video

Julie Fei Fan Balzer has this amazing series on her blog called Art Journal Every Day. You can commit along with her to do something small every day in your Art Journal. It is such an awesome concept and it works. You can play along for just a week or a month or the whole year- it is up to you.

For the next weeks Julie has some Art Journalers as guest bloggers lined up to show in a fast forward movie how they create their Art Journals.  Mine was up last friday on her blog. Here is the video:

Julle also asked me a couple of questions – you can read all the questions and answers on her blog– but I would like to put part of it on here too:

Q: Why do you art journal?

I actually call my art journals: Art Mournals – I usually only art mournal when I feel not good or when I’m angry -in a not so good mood. I am a very happy and optimistic person. Once in a while though there is something that upsets me or is unusually long on my mind. I need an outlet for expressing me that is uncensored and raw. I censor my lot in some of my work because it is used on websites or is work for someone else. In my art mournals I do not care what people think. And often after I worked on my page…I ‘m actually good again – all bad feelings or thoughts are in the page and I can move on and be the happy me again.

Another reason is that for me the process of creating something is often even more important than the outcome. I enjoy creating the art mournal pages as I can also get lost in the process of making them.

supplies used: White Gesso (Gerstaecker – thick gesso), Claudine Hellmuth’s Multi Medium glossy, Brush, old hotel key card, Crafter’s Workshop Stencil Circle Grid TCW203, Tattered Angels Screens, Staz On, Darkroom Door French Script Background Stamp, Eco Green Crafts Acrylic Paints, Eco Green Crafts Artist Medium Matte, Eco Green Crafts Artist Spackle, Eco Green Crafts Artist Glue, Magazine Image, Sassafrass Lass Paper, Typewriter, PanPastel, Derwent Inktense block, Heidi Swapp Chipboard Letters

I am so obsessed with pink red, yellow and also- not on this page orange right now.

Do you art journal/mournal and if so, why do you do it?

Have an amazing day !

Nat

Wear your Adhesives on the Outside

There are so many fun things that you can do with products by SCRAPBOOK ADHESIVES BY 3L . So this month I am teaming up with my wonderful friend Liz Hicks on a month long quest to share with you just how much fun you can have “Wearing your adhesive on the Outside”. I’m really fortunate to work with Liz on several different teams and I love her gorgeous work and amazing ideas and skills! Check out her blog If you don’t know Liz, YOU NEED TO! She is awesome and totally talented, I absolutely adore her.. Check out her blog here. When Liz found out that I joined the  SCRAPBOOK ADHESIVES BY 3L design team she told me about her cool idea of doing a blog hop, asked me if I would join and we decided to make March our month to share some of our favorite techniques using this fabulous adhesive.

Here is my video for this week

Here is my layout *Spring has sprung* using some of the techniques in the video:

Supplies: Scrapbook Adhesives by 3L products: E-Z Dots, Adhesive Sheets, E-Z Runner.

Tattered Angels Glimmer Mist and Glimmer Screen, Webster’s Pages Paper, Rose Moka Stickers

*Details*

Some texture on the background with the E-Z Dots embossed with Glitter Embossing Powder

Butterflies punched through the Adhesives Sheets.

So be sure to check us out each Monday as we share our favorite techniques with SCRAPBOOK ADHESIVES BY 3L products. Next week we will be using the craft and photo tape!

Liz and I will both be doing a giveaway on our blogs for all of you who join in through out the month on our little blog hop. Just take the techniques that we are sharing with you and apply them to on of your projects. The more times you try the more chances you have to win! Link back to your project on a comment here through out the month or you can tag us to your pic on Facebook, both will count. All entries will need to be dated March 1st 2010 or after and we will be picking our winners Monday, April 5th. The winners will be given an assortment of goodies from our stash (and are sure to include some of the wonderful products that we are demonstrating).

I hope you have fun and wish you a gorgeous week!

Technique Art Journal

Warum bin ich nicht früher auf die Idee gekommen – Ihr wisst ja, wie versessen ich auf Techniken bin: Ein Techniken-Art-Journal.

Why this idea didn’t occure to me earlier, I have no clue – as you know I’m totally crazy about techniques: a technique art journal

Oh and in case you haven’t seen it – I reorganised my blog and added two pages – my techniques and interviews – all links on one page. I still have to add some techniques. I thought it would be to sad if it would just vanished ;-)

and… from Lucrecer’s blog:

“Are you what people perceive you to be?
The Game is on!!! And you’re IT! Describe ME in one word… just one single word. Send it to me and to me only. Then send this message to all your friends and see how many strange & interesting things they say about you. This is really fun.
Here’s how to Play:
1. Hit the reply key and send me my one word.
2. Then return to this message, and forward it to your friends (including me) and see what people say about you when limited to one word!!!
The Game is On!!!!!
If you care to play, leave a word describing me and I will do the same for you.”
