    Dear Mystele:
I like the way you show the process step by step in a thinking process. You have patience and your imagery shows that the artistic process is part in fact a large part of the process. Thank you for sharing, Leslie

Stroll Through the Hood – June 2017

Time for a Stroll Through the Hood . Strolls through my hood get me out of my studio, they help me unstuck and often I get inspired by what I see and to get new ideas to create something. Here are some photos that I gathered in the last couple weeks.

I found this sign embedded in the pavement around the corner of my home- love it- but I am also intrigued who put it there and why.

Liberty State park always a great sight – it calls for another painting.

Love all the amazing pattern spray painted to the house – I should do something similar in an art journal page with my stencils

Besides that I agree with the sentiment on the wall- I love the font :)

And hey- how can you not be inspired by sweet Winnie’s face  :) Winnie is my friend’s dog and she loves celebrating birthdays with us ;)

New shoes to stroll through the hood …unfortunately they need some serious strolling before they will be comfortable- LOL

A cool old cheese sign at a flea market

I loved this sign at my Physical Therapist – would look great in an art journal too.

And after a crazy thunderstorm this huge rainbow showed up

And I took my new book Artful Adventures in Mixed Media on a stroll with me and my friend and photographer Sarah Baumberger took some photos of me and the book. It was a lot of fun.

I hope you enjoyed this month’s stroll through the hood – until next month <3

    Woof woof Winnie!
Love those new shoes Nat…they will become comfy as the leather breaks in (I hope).
That rainbow is AWESOME and the painted building is uplifting.
    Thanks for the stroll.

Thanks for all the neat pix you posted of “your Hood.” I HAVE to tell you – you’re so cute! And when you & Julie Fei-Fan Balzer get together on videos, I just crack up! My wish (unattainable, I’m afraid) is to spend an afternoon – painting & doodling with you 2! I’d probably be SO shocked, I wouldn’t be able to do anything but just stare at you two.

    A Fan,
    Grandma Nancy

Ha ha Grandma Nancy. I’m with you. I’ve taken an in-person workshop with Julie and it was great!
I’m sure that one with Nat would also be great! The two of them together and I might just faint.
Silly I am but my two art crushes are together a bunch.

Carry this Away- Art Journal Spread

I used a poem by Tyler Knott Gregson for this this Art Journal Spread. I really love his poems- check his book out- it is listed below.

You can see a free video  on how I created the page and my thought process while doing it in the free classroom accompanying the challenge if you haven’t yet. You can sign up here . The videos and class room are still available until the end of July.

I mono printed on acetate and included the printed sheet as a divider into my journal.

Love the texture and light that the acetate shows with the acrylic paint print. I used my Beacon Stencil here.

I also did some photo transfers and created some acetate embellishments.

It is always fun to use different substrates with the techniques you know. You can find more ideas about this in my new book Artful Adventures in Mixed Media.

Here are the supplies I used for the spread -some of them are affiliate links:

Book Signing at The Ink Pad, NYC

Last week my book Artful Adventures in Mixed Media was officially released and The Ink Pad in NYC invited me to have a book signing. It was so much fun!

I was really excited and I was really happy to see so many wonderful people coming to this event.

So cool to see Kathy who I had just met a couple months ago in my class in Ohio at Artiscape made a short trip to The Ink Pad while on a NYC trip. Thank you so much – it was so wonderful seeing you again!

Can you see how giddy I am? We have this saying in Germany: “If I hadn’t have ears, I would have smiled in a circle.” I assure you …I would have ;)

Thank you to all of you who came and celebrate this special day with me and to Anna from The Ink Pad. <3 You are amazing!

And if you are not in the area but still would like to have a signed copy- I will sign Artful Adventures in Mixed Media where ever I teach in the next couple months (See my In-Person Workshops here) . Or order one of my free bookplate stickers, which I will sign for you and send out for free to you.

This would be just the right book to add to my collection because your style of mixed media is fresh, fun and colorful! Plus when I’m reading I will be able to hear your voice like you are right here in person. I look forward to catching a IRL workshop with you again sometime, meanwhile your book will help keep me occupied during monsoon season here in SoFL. :)

Artful Adventures Stroll – Transportation

Subway – Billy Collins 1941

As you fly swiftly underground

with a song in your ears

or lost in the maze of a book,

remember the ones who descended here

into the mire of bedrock

to bore a hole through this granite,

to clear a passage for you

where there was only darkness and stone.

Remember as you come up into the light.

I created this art journal page based on two inspiration photos I took for the “Stroll Through The Hood Challenge” . You can see a free video  on how I created the page and my thought process while doing it in the classroom accompanying the challenge if you haven’t yet. You can sign up here

I love the poem and I liked incorporating it into my art journal. All in all I am so grateful we have such an amazing public transportation system here- unless it is early in the morning and the train is full to the brim. Good think I work mostly from home ;)

Hope your days is awesome filled with easy transportation – no traffic jams- no packed trains :)
