I don’t ask for much but …or … in My Art Journal Today
“I don’t ask for much but enough room to spread my wings” – I love this – and isn’t that the truth as an artist and as a person – all you need is room to spread your wings.
While thinking of the quote, I painted the background loosely with soft body paints: paynes grey, brilliant blue and yellow azo and then stenciled with green permanent using the What’s the point and Ornamental stencil.
Stamping in white was done with a pigment ink pad -loved how it popped off the page. I should have heat set the stamped images though as it took forever to dry on the acrylic paint and I smeared it accidentally when adding the images. Markers were used on the images. The wings are chipboard wings which I found in one of my drawers …I have to use up some of my chipboard- I hoarded a lot of chipboard shapes thinking one day I will have the best opportunity to use it – hey but the best opportunity is now ;)

Inspired by H.N. Werkman … or Creative Play
Remember the blogpost of my museum visit to the H.N. Werkman Exhibition in Groningen in The Netherlands? When Birgit and I came back from that trip, we were so inspired by Werkman’s artwork, that we went right into her studio and played. Instead of using a printing press we used a mono printing plate. I later continued playing and refining some of the Werkman inspired printing techniques in my own style at home.
This is the first print I made inspired by Werkman.
I call this “Man with hat between houses” :) LOL- titles are also inspired by Werkman- I loved that he just described what you see in his titles and it was kinda funny.
The Werkman exhibition inspired me, because his prints talked to me. I love how simple shapes combined tell a story.
As you can tell- the following one was inspired also by The Netherlands trip :)
“Windmill with 5 sheep”
Werkman worked with Stamps, Stencils, Paints and texture Tools – I loved the combination of these tools and media as that is what I use all the time too.
“Blue Skyline with watertower”
I loved his color choices – He was very bold in his colors which as you know speaks to me too.
This print is inspired by my visit to Toledo, Spain. “Passing on the Toledo Bridge”
Most of all, Werkman was inspiring to me because he dared to try new things. He was a printer by trade…who wanted to be an artist, and he combined his knowledge of printing with experimenting with new and revolutionary techniques for prints. Amazing!
This last print I did was a bit tricky with all the different elements and I am not super happy with the colors- but still fun! “Lady Liberty on 4th July”. I learned a lot from experimenting with this.
It is wonderful how a visit to a museum can expose you to artists you might not have known before and then give you a huge push to try something new and fun.

Oh wow – I missed this post. How in the world did I miss it. These are wonderful Nat. YEAH – I just knew you would get lots of use out of all those incredible pictures and memories from your trip. My favorite it the first one – Man Between Houses – rather describes our lives – always between something!! I just like the colors and the layout and symbolism of this one. But they are all FABULOUS. Even Lady Liberty is GREAT. Keep this up… these are just so inspiring, creative, color intriguing and delightful. LOVE them all. And I just have to say… blessed today to see you creating!!! Hugs j.

Stroll Through The Hood – July 2015
WoW it has been a while since I took you on a Stroll Through The Hood. Time to show some of the photos that inspired me while walking around in my neighborhood :)

Wow – should I be thinking that going on a stroll thru the hood is a brave thing to do Nat? Dear me… that’s whats in the back of my mind!! BUT… I must say – I love these pictures. Of course the skunk and the goat totally made me laugh!!! But every picture was sooooo enlightening and wonderful. Needless to say – I have never been anywhere that looked like that. This resonates with me right now a lot. Very quick spread – I brayered the colors on then stamped and stenciled using my Batik Stencil and Wired Stamp Set.
I cut out some shapes out of deli paper that I had used to print off access paint on the Printing Plate. I love deli paper as it makes for wonderful collage elements.
Now that I am back for a while and cut back on traveling for the second half of 2015, I cannot wait to dive into creating more – I missed my studio :)

Water Tower Fun
A couple weeks ago I stumbled upon these cardboard water towers on an instagram feed by Boundless Brooklyn. They come blank, are made out of 100% recycled material and you can paint and decorate them as you wish. I was super excited as I love those iconic water towers around NYC and Jersey City. I ordered them right away and 12 hours later I had them in my hand. Nice flat envelopes with scored chipboard pieces and glue dots inside, easy to assemble.
I had ordered two different sizes – The Medium Water Tower comes in 10 3/4” H x 5” . I spray painted the chipboard using my Elephant and What’s The Point Stencil and added the text on the water tower roof.
while adding layers to the chipboard I made sure that I would move the folds so that the cardboard would not become stiff. It was really easy peasy and the whole design made it to simple to put together in a very short time once it was painted.
For the small water tower which comes in 5 1/4″ H x 2 5/8″ W x 2 5/8″ D, I used Spray Paint and marbled it on the background by spraying wet in wet and then moving the pieces around. Then I added parts of the Batik and the Lilly Stencil with some acrylic paint.
I sealed off the water towers with some Pouring Medium which gives them a nice shiny glass finish. You can take of the top and put some small stuff in there. Loved this. I have one more water tower and a billboard sign to play with – cannot wait for it.

I would use them as centerpieces for tables for an event.
Names could go on them such as “friends”, “family”, “bride’s side”, etc…
