Whatevers Round 2 #5 or Good Advice

the WHATEVERS 2 A

Are you ready for the 5th photo of the Second Round of Whatevers? If you missed what the Whatevers is all about or want to see all the past photos and takes…check it out here.

Click here to see what CatVickiMartha and Cuchy made out of the photo and which story they tell.

Here is my take:

_NatKalbach_GoodAdvice01

Journaling: Mother told them to be proud of their legacy! Being born into a circus family was special and most of the time people would be very interested in them and their life. But sometimes they were treated like outcasts. Mother said: “Chin up, straight look, shoulders up and onward…Leave them behind.” It was good advice!

_NatKalbach_GoodAdvice02

Loved using  Liquitex Heavy Paints and Spray Paints as well as my Elephant March Stencil for StencilGirl Products.

And here is the photo of this month’s Whatever for you:

  • There is no rules on the length or the form of the story– it can be a short sentence, an essay, a poem or a soap opera – WHATEVER
  • There is no rules on the artform you choose – it can be a scrapbook layout, an altered art project, an artjournal page – WHATEVER

Do More of What Makes You Happy or….The InkPad Workshop

NatKalbach_InkPad01
I taught a class called Über*Media Backgrounds at The Ink Pad in New York City. It was a bit different in format as I did this class in two parts- the first part was at the end of October and the second yesterday.

NatKalbach_InkPad11

The first part was dedicated to creating with all kinds of background techniques and making your own paper for an later art journal. It was loads of fun.

NatKalbach_InkPad09

We used lot’s of different media

NatKalbach_InkPad14

NatKalbach_InkPad03

and played a lot with my StencilGirl Product stencils

NatKalbach_InkPad12

NatKalbach_InkPad08

NatKalbach_InkPad06

the second part was about layering and taking the backgrounds even further and of course finally using them – in this case for an art journal

I had a blast and loved the colorful creations of the girls. I also like the concept of an ongoing class – it gives you so many possibilities and is a great way for everyone to deepen the learned stuff and then take it further. And on top- I met “my girls” again . This might be something I will be doing again ;) – who knows ;)

What kind of classes do you prefer: One time and in person, on-going and in-person, online and just a short block or an ongoing online class?

Have a gorgeous day

WOW! What fun Nat! It would be So Cool to be able to create with you- therefore I’d like an ongoing face to face! When can we schedule it for?!! LOL Wish we had somewhere around us that you could come teach at- no privately owned stamp/scrapbook stores within 75 miles from me :(
Seriously, I would prefer face to face with instructor, on-going for sure or ongoing online. Thanks for sharing with us! hugs xo

I like both online and in person. I’ve only had in person once! It was a few weeks ago in Charlotte when Julie taught there. I loved doing it live with the teacher’s inspiration right there. But there is something to be said for taking your time in your own studio, pausing when you need to and rewatching when necessary. I’d love an ongoing class.

No Elevator…or…Stair Decor

NatKalbach_NoElevator01

Our new apartment is spread out on two floors and my studio is actually located on the second floor. The stairs itself are not that bad – given the fact we used to live on the 6th floor in Hamburg with no elevator but those stairs are pretty step and remind me a bit of Amsterdam.

NatKalbach_NoElevator02

I do love this saying ” There is no elevator to success. You have to take the stairs” and I think it is also a very fitting one to be on our stairs climbing up to my studio. And it makes the very clean and a bit boring stairs more ours. Here are some tips in case you want to try this yourself on your stairs:

1. don’t be scared – keep in mind the worst thing that can happen is that you have to paint white over it again. We will have to paint this when we move out- so what…in the meantime we have something we like as a decor.

2. Use a cosmetic sponge to apply the paint. Less is more – dab on…dab off…so that not too much goes underneath your stencil. I used acrylic paint.

3. It is ok if it doesn’t look perfect – it is hand stenciled!

4. here is how you can do the spacing easily:

NatKalbach_NoElevator03

Prepare each word you want to apply – I used the spacing that the stencils provided. I applied a piece of masking tape throughout the whole length of the word on the bottom and on the top.

NatKalbach_NoElevator04

Prepare and measure how much spacing you want from the bottom of the stair to the letters – and prepare a cardboard piece or sturdy panel that has that height. I was lucky and the green ruler in the picture was exactly what I needed. Flip the stencil word over and apply the spacer to the bottom masking tape making sure it lines up right to the edge of the letters.

NatKalbach_NoElevator05

Put the spacing tool centered onto the bottom of your stair and apply the top masking tap – make sure it is nicely and evenly pressed down. Then you can easily remove the space-helper and press down the bottom masking tape- and voila an even and right spacing :)

NatKalbach_NoElevator06

Then apply masking tape to the left and the right of the word- so that everything is nicely and flat attached to the wall. And then you can start. :) The taping work takes the most time for this project- take your time with it.

5. Have fun and enjoy your new stair decoration

Cannot wait to see how our visitors will like it :)

Here are the supplies I used

Have an amazing day

Stencil Test Drive Cascading Frames or…Picture Me Happy

So thrilled to be part again of the Stencil Test Drive featuring Jessica Sporn‘s Frames Stencil for StencilGirl Products.

Stencil Test Drive Logo

Today along with some others I show you what I created using her Frames Stencil.

954

Here is my art journal page

NatKalbach_PictureMeHappy01

And here is how I created this

NatKalbach_PictureMeHappy02

I used some Glue N’ Seal over my What’s The Point and while it was drying

NatKalbach_PictureMeHappy03

I used spray paints through the frame stencil on book paper that I had just as a left over from a different project.

NatKalbach_PictureMeHappy04

I added some Ink to the top of the artjournal page and let it run down

NatKalbach_PictureMeHappy05

I cut out the frames out of the book paper

NatKalbach_PictureMeHappy06

and adhered them with a glue stick

NatKalbach_PictureMeHappy07

and then I sprayed through the frames stencil again – quite a lot- I wanted to have a more runny and non perfect image

NatKalbach_PictureMeHappy08

to tone down the book paper a bit I used some distress stain on it

NatKalbach_PictureMeHappy09

and then I used some Distress Ink to pop the What’s the Point Bits and the frames out a bit more :)

NatKalbach_PictureMeHappy10

Now go see what the other artists did with the Frames stencil!  But before you do, be sure to leave a comment  by midnight EST 10/13here because Jessica is giving away a Frame stencil to one lucky winner, and EVERY comment in the test drive will be eligible to win.  The more times you comment, the more chances you have to win!

Heel Porsche or…Put an Elephant on it

Let me introduce you to my newest little helper…my Heel Porsche :)
NatKalbach_Shoppingbag01

That is actually the nickname of those shopping bags literally translated from German. I love my new Heel Porsche. We don’t own a car and the next bigger supermarket is a couple blocks away- close enough to walk but for bigger shopping trips long enough to make my arms feel miserable carrying stuff. I did a lot of research on these rolling shopping bags and finally I fell in love with this Rolser Bag because it folds easily and you can carry it on your shoulder and it also unfolds like a charm. It comes in all kinds of patterns and colors but I chose it so that I could add my own little twist to it.

NatKalbach_Shoppingbag02

I used Liquitex Professional Markers and Liquitex Professional Spraypaints with my Arabesque and Elephant March Stencil on the flap and on the bottom. Here you see it folded together.

NatKalbach_Shoppingbag04

and from the other side- which is the bottom

NatKalbach_Shoppingbag03

It was such a fun and quick project and it also works like perfect – 6 big bottles of Water, a Gallon of Milk, 2 Gallons of Orange juice, and a lot of other stuff…and I had no problem rolling this thing back home on uneven pavement.

NatKalbach_Shoppingbag05

In Germany a Heel Porsche is really uncool- but hey…I think even in Germany that one would work – and actually …I guess with 40 I am kind of over that being uncool-problem anyway ;)

NatKalbach_Shoppingbag06

What image would you put on a Heel Porsche?

Have a wonderful day!

Huge hugs

nat

Arabesque Stencil was born actually the same night as my Elephant March Stencil – I wanted a nice background stencil to go with it and I so love how the bigger pattern of the swirl gives you the opportunity to get the coolest layered results peaking through :)

Check out some samples here:

NatKalbachArabesqueStencilProjects

Here is what I created for today:

NatKalbach_Arabesque01

I layered the stencil on top of a crazily painted background and sprayed over it with some Liquitex Spray Paint.

NatKalbach_Arabesque02

On one of my studio walls I had a couple wall tatoos which I had to take off and then I was a bit sad that I would loose them with the move and then the brain functioned and I added them to my art journal. So love that I could include them in a new function and that I will not loose them :)

WHY an elephant Stencil? I love elephants and we have a lot of family connections with elephants! My uncle Gerd used to work as a zoo keeper at the zoo in Wuppertal. His stories of the elephants always fascinated me the most. And as a little child my grandaunt Margot used to tell me the story of the Tuffi a female circus elephant who jumped out the famous monorail in Wuppertal into the river in 1950 (no elephant seriously hurt!). And I loved all kinds of stories elephant related…and Elephants can be represent so many things..memory, strength,  mental strength, fun, intelligence. Need more reasons or an elephant stencil? Nope- LOL- ok…let’s continue on

Check out some samples here:

I agree on the richness of the colours, I like the contrast too. I have never thought of myself as an elephant fan but your stencil is really inspiring.

I think this elephant stencil is fantastic and I love how you have used it in each of your canvases, especially the layers of colour and the red and yellow stripes ( how do you get that effect?) on the elephants. I love elephants too – your design is my new favourite!

I love how much texture and interesting effects the collaged flowers, die cuts, Fragments, Aged Embossing Powder and other elements added to my spray painted background and elephant.
