Julie made me draw my first Sketch and I had a lot of fun with it. I think I will get a bit more into doing so. I never thought I could draw – and I do not think this is going to be my strongest asset, but I had fun – and that is the thing that counts…so here..show and tell- LOL – my first one

I have not even the slightest clue how to wrap up the fun visit by my friend Julie Fei Fan Balzer as this week was packed with so much fun, laughter, art, sightseeing, discussions, inspiration, birthday celebrations, insane amount of food and girlfriend stuff.

We took photos in a photo booth each day – gosh we were laughing so much – I cannot even walk by this booth anymore without giggling.
Girlfriend time- I tell you – so refueling ! Nowadays it is rare that you spent so much time with a friend and I think it was the best way to slide into my 40s – I felt like 20 LOL. Thanks Julie for making my birthday so special and thanks to my hubs for treating us both like princesses for a week ;)

I agree that you obviously had a great time celebrating your 40th for a week but remember, in my world you get to celebrate for the whole year hen you hit 50 so start planning now girlfriend!

oh man, SUCH a fun post. I love that you went into the photo booth every day. They should have Photo Booths in every town, all over the place!! There is nothing I enjoy more than time with the ladies in my studio – you’ve inspired me to get a date set for laughing, creating, and probably sipping wine!

This canvas was a birthday present for a close friend. It was also published in the Paperhaus Magazine – Summer Issue – where I was, amongst others, featured as a Mixed Media Artist. I love working all in white once in a while and then add some color here and there. I was a bit nervous to give it as a present though – but I think it was well received ;)
I wanted to add only some small color spots and let the texture speak out.

It seems like I like doing canvases like this for weddings ;) – See here is one I did for my husband’s and my wedding a year ago. That is as romantic as you get me in my work- LOL.

I recently have been having problems seeing photos on Blogs, not yours, but others. I switched to Google Chrome and no more problems. Your canvas is stunning and I am sure the Bride and Groom will cherish it forever.

This layout was published last month in the Paperhaus Magazine and I had loads of fun doing it. The picture shows me with my new glasses…I guess my eyes are getting older- snigger
I painted the background with Luminarte Silks and also stamped with bubble wrap after applying some of the Luminarte Silk on top- love the effect. I also used my Circuit Stencil and a pencil and just traced through the stencil -I love the effect.
The faux sewing I did with the Sew Easy Tool- which I love a lot- but always forget that I have it. You basically trace the stitching down and then I use a black journaling pen and just trace along- looks pretty real and makes it easy for some small stitching areas ;)

And your glasses look beautifull. I also have glasses, since my teenage years. Tryed contact lenses, was oké for a while but now i weare my glasses every day. Can’t see without it. That means, when i’m behind my laptop and reading a book and too look in the far. Anyhow, it soots you well. Hope you had fun with Julie. :) Have a great week.
Yes, I’ve been wearing glasses since third grade. I recently got progressive bifocals and it took me two weeks to get used to them. Each time I get a stronger lens it takes a week or so to get used to them. Those frames look good on you and the LO is quite fun. I really like the faux stitching.
Your new glasses are nice and really flatter your face. I have been wearing glasses since I was 7 years old… more years that I chose to share. I really enjoyed your layout too!

When i started at 48 using them, i did not accept the change!…and was always putting them away!…but now i can not do anythi;ng without that “silly piece” on my face!… The layout reflects your feelings! love it!
Forgot to tell you how much I love this layout. The colors reached right out to me….beautiful.
(sigh) yes I have glasses, progressive bifocals (huge pain) and I long for the past days of my perfect 20/20 vision. The only time I dont have to wear them is when on the computer. I too had the dizziness but that goes away.

Funny story…. The last time I had to “upgrade” my lens I treated myself to new frames – transparent dark turquoise Jimmy Choo’s with rhinestones. They were a little pricey but were just crying to go home with me. As I was debating the cost vs. need, a customer in the optical store broke out her iPhone and calculated what those frames would cost me per day for 1 year and told me “honey, if they make you feel good, go for it…you deserve it”! The cost breakdown and her comment made so much sense to me, I bought them. Moral to this story….I will be wearing turquoise rhinestone Jimmy Choo glasses when I am 90 years old….but I’ll be a hot mamma at 90. ;) ROFLMAO

Today I am turning 40 and I am looking forward celebrating my birthday with some of my best friends here in Hamburg and my sweet friend Julie Fei Fan Balzer who is here visiting me.
A couple of weeks I had asked you which questions you always wanted to ask me and I collected those and some of the questions I got via email all the time for my F.A.Q site- and here you go -some things some of you wanted to know about me…why not post that on my birthday- LOL.
Q: Where do you live?
A: Right now in Hamburg, Germany…but I am transitioning soon to New Jersey City in the U.S. You can see some posts about my Strolls around the neighborhood in Hamburg here:
Q: What inspires your art work ? Is it the products ? or a combination of things ?
A: I think it is indeed both. Sometimes when I get new art supplies and try them out it, it totally inspires me to some art work I would have never done. some supplies just make me want to use them over and over again and I get excited – but there are also many other things that inspire me. Often it is a stroll through my neighbor hood, there is so much that inspires me here. But also listening to a song, or reading a book. I love when I stumble over a quote or line in a book/song and it makes me think and this is often then the starting point for my work. Most of my work is very emotional as guided by the emotions and the thoughts I have while creating in my mind.
Q: Does your creative mojo ever get blocked? What do you do to unblock it?
A: It does! And now the answer is really a weird one. Sometimes it helps to just keep going…with a little “WHATEVER ” attitude and that sometimes turns out to be the best work ever…probably because I let go. But sometimes this fails too or I just feel like I cannot even do “WHATEVER” and then I just go and let it be. I do something totally different. Go out, do something I wanted to do for a long time , clean, meet friends…and when I come home mojo is usually back
Q: How do you get started with a new product and figure out all the ways to use it?
A: I analyze it a lot before I open it. I read all I can find about it, make the necessary connections to products that are the same or similar and then start testing the things that do work with the similar products first. After realizing what the unique features of that products might be, I start experimenting new techniques and check those. It is a long process but I enjoy it and makes me feel I really know the product. If I like it and feel it is a good fit to my work- I use it and I teach with it too.
Q: I would love to know how what for most of us is a hobby became a profession for you. You have mentioned that you previously worked in the legal profession. Please share how you became a professional mixed media artist.
A:Yes indeed I studied law and worked as a paralegal for 17 years. I loved my job – but in 2004 I stumbled across scrapbooking and very soon over Mixed Media Art where my heart is. In 2006 I was asked to teach my first workshops in Berlin, Germany and I have come a long way since then. It wasn’t a light-hearted or fast decision and a lot of work over many years went into this. Over the years my obsession with Mixed Media Art and my teaching opportunities grew so much, that I spent almost all my vacation days traveling to different workshop venues. So in 2011 I decided to take the plunge and become a Professional Artist. I let my readers know back then in this post: Life Changes…And Change is good.
Q: Do you have any regrets quiting your job as a paralegal and becoming a full time artist?

Q: What were some challenges and/or unforeseen changes you faced making the jump from hobbyist scrapper/artist to pro?
A: There were two major challenges for me. One was fear – you can read all about it here: Thoughts: The key to chance is to let go of fear. The other hardest struggle for me in the beginning was that from having a very structured day and times in the law office going to a way on deciding how to organize self employment. In the beginning often times I would have a hard time starting in the morning – then work till after midnight. Now I start early in the morning and still work till midnight- LOL- so hopefully soon this gets even better .

Q: How do you choose the colors that go together the best in your work?
A: I wrote a series of posts about colors and my relationship to them- called Colors are Your Friends which explains a lot how I choose colors and why for my work.

A: ahhh tough question…there are several attempts – and probably it will be all different once I moved- but meanwhile I leave you with one of my last organization posts when I bought a letterpress cabinet.

Cuchy and my 3rd Artmesa Event was awesome! We had a great time!
I taught my Season -Texture Canvas and it was a lot of fun as always to see all the different colors and outcomes and also see a lot of my stencils in use !
Cuchy’s book class was so really cool! – I loved it!
I have laughed so much that day and also later at the dinner – my belly still hurts. I learned essential spanish sayings and flamenco fan moves- LOL – as well as I was sung way ahead of my birthday birthday songs until the whole rest of the restaurant came over to congratulate me too…probably just to make sure we stop singing ;)
I also ate about every other minute…nom nom
And Cuchy took me to some sightseeing in El Escorial – beautiful town with a gorgeous royal monastary -the town built around.
Thank you to all our wonderful students, and to Cuchy and her amazing family! Cannot wait to see you next year ;)

I love this quote and it makes me fall even more in Love with Robert Ryman and his approach to art.
Lot’s of fun playing with my What’s The Point Stencil and some silhouettes I cut.
I had cut out the silhouettes and played with the mask and the stencil which I got out of the two figures. I layered the stencil over too and sprayed with Liquitex Spray Paints over it -I like the effect.
For the paper I used some Distress Inks – I just love how the Distress inks make every color pop.

The quote is a good reminder as it is so easy to compare art (and see how mine is not up to par). Like the colors that you used and love the stencil.
I know as soon as I get my hands on this stencil ….it will become one of my favourites!! Oh and the crackle and…OK all of yours!!!! This is a full weekend in Toronto..we have Canada Day on Monday and it is also Pride weekend….so I will be creating a rainbow tribute to Pride and a red and white for my spectacular country….ART ON!!!!!!

What do you mean, you can’t draw/sketch? For your first one, it is awesome. I would have never known that it was your first time. I always thought/believed I couldn’t draw/sketch, but since I’m a believer that one can do anything with practice, I’ve started sketching/drawing for about 9 months. I love it. And I love seeing how I’ve progressed :-). The funny thing is that my best sketches happen when I am on a time limit (like at lunch at work) or when I don’t worry about “perfection”, like in front of the TV.

Pretty good for a first try. I have done just a few sketches (after seeing the ones that Julie’s posted) and I feel really unskilled in this area. I will keep trying but it does not make me feel too confident when I see the finished result.

Long time not sketching! But i think that is not forgotten as ” taquigrafía or riding bycicle!… i will be trying! thanks for refreshing my mind…for instance, as soon as i saw this, i realized it was a deck!…that is the idea of sketching! TFSNat!
