A lot of times I get asked what inspires me. And one of my key answers is always “a stroll through the hood”. It might be street art, it might be thoughts or feelings connected with certain sights, it might be stuff I find to buy…in one way or the other you might find the photos, the thoughts, the feelings, the colors or anything from those strolls in my art journal, a mixed media project or a scrapbooking layout.
I would love to show you once a month what inspired me while strolling through my neighborhood. I hope you like the little insights into my daily life where I live (at the moment Hamburg, Germany). This is also a wonderful way for me to remind myself on the inspiring things in the hood. Maybe you get inspired by those posts and even invite ME to a stroll in YOUR hood – feel free to grab the logo and leave a comment for me on the post and share!
I love these pillars that some of the houses have around here- this one is my favorite as it has also so much texture – ahhh – I want to create a background that looks like this
This is outer wall to a garden of a kindergarten in the hood. I love this – it is funny and I am sure the kids love it too.
I was rushing to go out with some friends when I passed by this clothes stores and the decoration made me stop. Love the clothespins lamps- such a cool idea – it is formed chicken wire and attached to it are the clothes pins
Love this view out of the window of the train right before you roll into my neighbor hood train station. BTW…notice T-Shirts ? Yes…the ONLY day so far in this spring there it was warm enough and I spent it in train….LOL
I thought this was such a fun idea – in this shop which sells things from local designers and artists you step up from the shop into the window display and you can walk around the display and check the things out in the window. Great idea to make it part of the shopping experience.

Played a bit around in my art journal using my new Oldtimer Stencil and Liquitex Acrylic Inks. I collaged a bit on the background and tried some new stamps I found in a junk yard kinda store in the neighbor hood and then sprayed with Liquitex Spray inks over the oldtimer stencil and then rubbed over the Acrylic Inks-
Love how intense the colors got and how the spray painted areas got so much dimension.

This is the first of my canvases I did for an exhibition here in Hamburg in August. Since I am moving to the States soon – I want to say good-bye to Hamburg by using things that are gone by now in Hamburg too or things that are Hamburg for me. Hence the exhibition name I chose- It is a wordplay which cannot be translated really ;)
This beautiful house was in a street that I worked and lived for a long time – it just got torn down- they are doing it as I write…I worked in this street for 13 years and I lived next to this house about 8 years. Every time I passed this house I thought how beautiful it would be to own this place. It had a little portuguese cafe in the front where I spent many fun hours with different friends drinking a yummie Galao and fresh pressed orange juice and eating delicious little pastries like Pastel del Natas.
I loved creating this canvas- it let me indulge in all those memories connected with this place …and unfortunately also crave portuguese pastries- LOL. Off to work on the next canvas :)

At the Baltic Sea event I taught a Scrapbooking – Layout class. I only had 1 1/2 hours for this and that made it a challenge for me- LOL. I usually do not teach workshops that short- especially since mixed media related workshops need way more time and…I do usually not teach Layout classes. But hey…sometimes it is fun to do something different- and I was told the students liked it :) It was also a good way to start the workshop event since most of my students NEVER did anything Mixed-Media related…so I started slow and then had them bath in paint full force by sunday- LOL.
So …here is the layout…I had three samples- so the students could see how choosing different ways of colors effect the layout differently.
We used Ranger Dylusions and Distress Paints in many different ways incorporating different techniques for different effects.
And now…what does Farbtupfer mean? mmmh – interesting enough I cannot find a real word for this in English – It means spots of color or specks of color – which wouldn’t make a good title for a workshop in English- LOL.
I tell you, sometimes the challenge for me is finding a name for workshops that would work in both languages and it is not always possible ;)

Thank you all for your amazing and wonderful words about my move to the U.S. As some of you stated, it is a scary yet pretty exciting thing ahead. I have been a bit tense the last couple weeks as there is just so much to organize and do for the move, and one of the things that totally relaxed me for a couple of days was my workshop event at the Baltic Sea. Walking at the beach in the morning for a couple of hours was one fo the best things I have done for just calming down and actually also getting my mantra back into my head “Everything will work out perfectly” .
The crazy background is a result of several things that I was showing in classes or where I tried things out in my art journal page. Lot’s of layers and different paint media and materials, tied together with my new Circuit Stencil and Crackle Stencil :)
I usually do not use photos in my art journal- but somehow this was telling me I should because the photos in this case would speak more to me then the background or the journaling and remind me on how relaxing this all was :)

This Oldtimer Stencil makes the third stencil with Stencil Girl Products out by me :) The stencil is actually 6×6 inches big- and on my layout you see the bigger version- which we decided not to use- I like it smaller better. But nonetheless this is the design :)
I did a layout using the stencil with Dylusion Spraypaints.
I love oldtimer cars and I love how you can use it also for more male oriented layouts as well as on art journal pages in the background. Especially when it is the 6×6 size. I will show more samples as soon.
I used the photo before. It totally cracks me up. My great-uncle Hans is in the background, in the front is a friend of him and my aunt Margot with a fishing rod and then…hahahahahah- I tell you what- I didn’t even notice last time I used the photo …my aunt is sitting in the car!
So why would you take a photo of two dudes on a fishing trip, the car placed in the picture and have the wife sit in the car? LOL. Makes me crack up!

I have been wanting to ask you how you have maintained the commitment and momentum of being a professional Mixed Media artist?? Do you have any regrets? What would you do differently? Do you struggle with being stale? [and that doesnt mean that I think you are!!!! :*]

Hey Nat, thanks for letting us ask you holes into the stomach (haha, you know that german saying, right?). I read your blog since a year now and I really love it! You have so many great techniques and ideas. And it is always a pleasure to look at your creations.
You often share what inspires you. Do you ever have times when you can’t get into the creative mode? If you have that: what do you do to get over it?
What are your top-tips for beginners who want to start with scrapbooking or mixed media? What supplies do you think are must-haves for the first steps of someones creative life?
How did you you make the decision to start a career in the business? Was it hard? Did you have a lot of fears? What did you do to fight them?
What makes you sad when you leave beautiful Hamburg (also my hometown; and I am also leaving this year to live elsewhere.)? What will you miss the most? How do you handle all the stress and “Nervkram” that comes with the move? And what about your aunt that you take care for? Will she be ok with your leaving to the US? What are you looking for the most in the US? Here also: what about fears? How long did it take you to make the decision to move?

Hi Nat, Love your work! You have inspired me MANY times!! I worked in an art shop for 3 years before it closed. :-( I got a BUNCH of oil bars in many colors but haven’t a clue as to how to use them. Any ideas? I worked the scrapbook side of the store, btw, but do mixed media also. I know I need to just “play” with them but since they are OIL and clean up isn’t like watercolors, I thought I would get some info first. Thanks for letting your fans ask you questions!!!! You are a rockin’ sister!!!!!! LOL. Hugs, Harriet

I would love to know how what for most of us is a hobby became a profession for you. You have mentioned that you previously worked in the legal profession. Please share how you became a professional mixed media artist. I’d also like to know what your biggest challenge is art wise.
