Ode to a City – Art Journal

For this spread I used my new foam stamps and acrylic paints. These were actually all kinds of test stamp sheets for our product photos but I loved the vibrant colors and thought it would be fun to layer them up.

Here is Hydrant looking very cute in pink and of course Lady Liberty in green. I stamped both Powerhouse and Brownstone along with my Powerhouse Rubber Stamp and Brownstone Rubber Stamp.

I was journaling just random thoughts on why I love living in a city.

Here is Church and Row Houses too. I just layered them as I wanted and then added a double sided adhesive to the back and cut where the journal fold is so it would be easy to open and close.

Time Traveler – Art Journal

“See… I am a time traveler… I travel 60 mins an hour to the future.”

For this art journal spread, I was playing with my new ArtFoamies on a Gelli Plate.

I rolled out magenta acrylic paint on my Gelli plate, then pushed the foam stamps into it to lift the paint and let it dry. Then I rolled out white paint on top and pulled a print while the paint was still wet – this takes off the dried paint as well. Also bits and pieces that were dried to the plate before I rolled out the magenta color came up too here and there and I love the grungy look that resulted.

and here is Church peeking through some yummy grunginess.

I pasted these prints into my art journal and then also stamped some of the foam stamps inked up with Versafine ink in there too to add some other elements.

I used my E-Train rubber stamp with black archival ink for some detail and also my Love Knots rubber stamp with yellow ink from the Embroidery set.

Hydrant Feels – Art Journal

“Some days you’re the fire hydrant, and some days, you are the dog.” 

This quote made me laugh hard so I just had to use it to show you my new Hydrant foam stamp in action.

I kept the page pretty simple – just stamping in a complementary color scheme with Versafine ink pads, layering them up.

I really like how big and bold the Hydrant stamp is and I’m excited to use it not just in my art journal, but other projects too.

Better World – Art Journal

“It is in your hands to create a better world for all who live in it.” – Nelson Mandela

… Use your damn hands!

I used my new Lady Liberty foam stamp – a nice big stamp with the oomph that I wanted for this page. To get my color I rolled out two acrylic paints with a brayer – soft acrylic paints in teal and green – and then stamped. I wanted the look of some patina – like the statue itself.

I added some stars with my Star Tag rubber stamp.

…and used a Fude pen for the journaling.

Scary Either Way – Art Journal

“It’s scary when things change. It’s scary when things stay the same.”

Isn’t that the truth.

For this spread I just stamped with different versafine stamp pads using my new Foam Stamps like the Church. I also used some of my other stamps like the Solid Triangle Small from Triangle Love and the Fan-fare rubber stamp set.

I filled in some of the details with markers like here in the Brownstone foam stamp.

And here is the Powerhouse foam stamp with some details highlighted.

And here is Row Houses looking lovely in yellow.

Here is a tip – After using ink, clean your stamps with water and a soft brush to make sure ink does not transfer to your next project or other inkpads.

    You get such a clear and complete image when you stamp.
    I have had some luck using Julie’s suggestion to stamp with a mat underneath, but I still get bothered by incomplete images.
    Maybe it’s the “perfect” side of my brain. I continue to strive to let go. Nice new set of stamps Nat!

Interrogating Fear – Art Journal

“We climbed slowly towards the greatest of our terror of that time, we want to expose ourselves to fear and interrogate it. ” – My Brilliant Friend

Are you interrogating your fears? Pretty hard to do but they say it’s one of the best ways to overcome things. I was mulling it over when I created this page.

I still have paper from my Suminagashi Session so I used one of those prints as a background. Suminagashi is a Japanese paper marbling technique that is very doable at home and yields some beautiful results for collage, bookbinding, art journaling etc.

For the facing page, I used a sheet I made with my Kyoto and Tokyo stencils along with Distress Oxide inks and a blending tool. The sketch I made on normal printing paper, and then adhered on top with a glue stick.

What Does it Matter? – Art Journal

“Most people barely know themselves. So what does it matter what they think of you?”

I took this pattern from Pattern Monday 3 using my Floral Tile Small, Mini Motifs, and Fan-Fare rubber stamps – unfortunately I laid my hand into the still pretty wet ink and ruined the white space in the middle. I tried to fix it with some white paint and water color but – mmhhhhh not sure if that actually made it better but oh well… moving on …

I overpainted a catalog image with acrylic markers and then used posca markers for the journaling.

Little but Fierce – Art Journal

“And though she be but little, she is fierce.” – Shakespeare

I used two gel prints that I pasted into the art journal for this spread – done years apart but I felt they would work together because of the similarities of color. On this side I used my Versailles stencil for the print, then layered my figure with markers on deli paper over top. 

I added some of the colors to the other side to tie it together as well and I picked up the circles and used them all over too – I stamped the circles with white Moonlight ink pad and my Circle Jumble stamps.

Good Energy – Art Journal

Give this world Good Energy!  It can always use more :)

The pattern is some papers that I made from stamping off my Triple Play foam stamps with different acrylic paints on a StampBuddy. Watch a little StampBuddy video here on how that works. I used those as collage elements for the background. Then I added a catalog imagine, painted over with Liquitex Markers for a focal point.

I used a Fude pen for my journaling.
