Song Bird or… In My Art Journal Today

Free after E. E. Cummings “My head is a living forest full of song birds.”

I made this page based on a background that to be honest was really really bad. The colors were just awful on the spread, so I used some gesso here and there to tone it down and then I layered my new frond masks which are part of my new Bird StampSet on top of the background. You can pop the fronds out of the plastic and that gives you a stencil and masks in one :)

I then used Carbon Black and Parchment Spray Paint and sprayed over the masks, which revealed after lifting them, the really cool colors and designs. I used a brayer to layer some white paint on top of the foam stamp and the patterned and the solid side to stamp the birds onto the spread.

An easy way to make something nice out of a really ugly beginning :) And a great way to start the day with a little art journaling warm up.

I tend to nibble all night long in the winter, there-by gaining weight. But of I am doing art projects between 8 and midnight, I can’t eat at the same time!

Designed by n*Studio: NEW Stampendous Stamp Sets

I am so excited that there are four new stamp sets coming out this year designed by me through Stampendous. And I am even more excited that these are something that I have been wanting to do for a couple years now- I am a huge foam stamp fan and I have been including foam stamps in a lot of my classes throughout the years. Over the years I told many people I would love to do my own foam stamp designs and I so hope that you will like those 3 Sets (Elephant, Bird and Urban Scribble) including 1 foam stamp with 2 stamping surfaces,  and the Fashion Dame Set with 1 rubber stamp and 1 Stencil and the one set with layering rubber stamps.

    Instant fave was the urban scribble, but the longer the video played, the more I shifted from one to another. I can only say that my conclusion is that I love your art and can’t wait to integrate the stencils (ALL of them) into my own work. So exciting to anticipate their release.

    Ahh – loved that video showing the ways you used them. I have never seen a foam stamp like that Nat. Wow. I can tell you what I love… it that the foam stamp can go either way. For instance… I get so frustrated because I have a bird but he only faces the WRONG WAY!!! So that is very exciting. And YOU KNOW… I love the city scape the best…. because your city scape artwork is always my fav!!! They are all four wonderful… truly. I am soooooooooooo excited that you have these. I just used once of your floral stamps on my Matisse flower!!! Thanks bunches for such a great post – loved reading and watching it ALL. Congratulations – sooooo proud for you!!! j.

      Thank you so much Joi for your super sweet comment ! Yes- I know- the facing the wrong way…I hope that this will help! BTW- easy solution for facing wrong way …you can always stamp on a geli plate or mono printing plate and then use the plate image- it will be reversed then :)

    Hallo Nathalie,

    Well, first of all I have to tell you that “Kaffe Klatch” was my all time favourite stamp set last year. Out of this release, the first one I will buy is the elephant (on a budget otherwise I would buy more!). But! I love the city scape and the bird as well. And I can see so many uses for the fashion doll….Hmm, as one of my new years resolutions is to loose weight, perhaps I can buy stamps instead of sweets? Two flies in one swat? Have a lovely and prosperous 2016!

Listen, Smile …or In My Art Journal Today

Disclaimer: This post includes an art journal page with a swear word – I know….OMG!  Please …get over it, it is called personal expression . Sometimes an art journal is a the best way to get some grumpy feelings out …and this was just the right thing for me to write down at the situation I was in. So there, I felt better right away :)

But besides that I was dumping my grumpiness onto this art journal spread – I had a pretty fun time painting :) I had used some colors, mixing and brushing them on and also doing some marks with my brush.

The white splatters were done with a fan brush and white Liquitex Acrylic Ink.

For the stamping I used my Stampendous Mark Maker Set and the Hero Arts Ink Pad – I love the chalky look of it and how it gives a nice layered look.

For the journaling I use a Fineline Applicator filled with a mixture of Liquitex acrylic ink and soft body paint.

The orange-purple-brown texture pieces are actually acrylic skins which I applied with Matte Medium – I love using those in  my art journal.

designed by n*Studio features: The Envelope, Please! By Judi Kauffman

Thank you for inviting me to be your guest designer, Nathalie. When I saw your new Fiesta stamp set, the first thing I thought about was envelopes! A decorated envelope makes any card or letter extra special and the stamps and stencils in the set are the perfect fit in every way.

The stamps provide a great combination of lacy and floral elements, bold as well as soft-edge, large and small – just right for mixing and matching, layering and overlapping. The silhouette stencil and masks of a lady and gentleman dressed in their finery sparked all sorts of ideas and added to the possibilities.

Given that envelopes are meant to be ephemeral, tossed after they’ve done their job of carrying correspondence, I like to decorate them quickly, working in big batches. Ideas beget more ideas; before you know it there are a couple of dozen envelopes ready to use, a series of one-of-a-kind creations that take only a few minutes each.

Sometimes all I do is stamp and smudge and call it a day. But other times I take the envelopes beyond the initial stamping and smudging: Markers and pencils and pens come out to play!

Instructions:

  1. Spread out some newsprint to protect the work table. (Save the newsprint to use for collage, it will have partially-stamped images and lots of smudged color on it!)
  1. Temporarily mount the stamps on acrylic blocks. Using a dark color dye-based ink (sepia, stream, or denim, but not black) stamp a series of envelopes making sure to leave an area for writing the recipient’s name and address. Envelopes shown are A2 size. Substitute #10 or any other size you prefer.
  1. Using artist’s sponges smudge the same ink and other ink colors over and around the stamped areas.
  1. Use the silhouette masks to create open areas toward the center of some of the envelopes as shown.
  1. Stamp some more envelopes using lighter colors.
  1. Use markers, pencils and pens to add bold accents or subtle color blends, highlight and bring out areas within the design, and create doodle patterns. If you enjoy wet media make sure to stamp with permanent inks and use watercolors, acrylic paints, and mists to accent the envelopes (in addition to, or instead of, the markers, pencils and pens).
  1. For the finishing touch, choose postage stamps that coordinate with the colors and designs on the envelopes.
  1. While you’re at it: Stamp some cards, create some collage papers, or work on art journal pages using the same design strategies and supplies.

      Toni, I used Ranger dye based inks for stamping and smudging, then ProMmarkers and Sakura pens and Prismacolor pencils to add more color and line work in selected areas. Smudging was done with a round artist’s sponge, found in the fine arts aisle of a craft store.

designed by n*Studio features: Stampendous Design Team

And today I feature: The Stampendous Design Team – and since it is a bigger design team …here a  couple :)

Janelle Stollfus

Janelle is part of the Design Team since 2011 and I spied this wonderful notebook she created, using my Fiesta Stamp Set for the flower .

Love how she stamped the flower on painted canvas and then cut it out and layered it for a dimensional book mark – so clever and beautiful!

Lea Fritts

Lea is part of the Stampendous DT since 2012 and I found this fun Garden Canvas she created using my Fiesta, Kaffee Klatsch, Mish Mash, Wired and Grunge Stampset.

I love how Lea used all the different stamps and created this whimsical garden – I also love the texture and the happy colors. Here is what she used and how she did it.

Wendy Price

Wendy is part of the Design Team since 2009. I love her darling scrapbooking layout using my Kaffee Klatsch Stamp Set on an acrylic sheet.

I love how the stamps look really lacy on the sheet- beautiful. You can see what she used and how she did it, here.

Pam Hornschu

Pam is part of the Design Team since 2002 – WOW! Given my obsessions with houses and cityscapes – I was delighted to spy this piece by Pam using my Mark Maker Stampset.

I love how she used some of the stamps in the set to mimic roads and how she used some others with embossing powder for the background. You can read what she used and how she created these happy houses here.

I love how all four of them incorporated the stamps in their own styles and so differently. Thank you to the Stampendous Design Team for using them and  doing such wonderful work- you girls rock!

Positive Everything or … In My Art Journal Today

I used Liquitex acrylic inks for the background. In order to make sure that the ink can be blended a bit longer and also does not create big blobs where ever you apply them first, I usually mist the background with some water.

I used my Mark Maker Stampset by Stampendous with soft body paints to create some patterns and tie the different colors together. I love the textured and dimensional look those stamps get when used with acrylic paint.

Attention or… In My Art Journal Today

The page spread I used for this, was covered with different colors and and some collage from a class demo and I wasn’t super keen on keeping it, so I covered the page up with black gesso, giving it a nice smooth black coating. Then I pulled out my Stampendous n*Studio Fiesta stamp set and a white Ink pad and created some pattern repeatedly stamping each individual stamp in clusters – kind of forming a drop curtain.

I also used the stencils and mask included in the stamp set and outlined the man and woman silhouette with a white Signo pen, then added some color with Derwent Artbars inside and blended the colors with a waterbrush. I love the effect of the Artbars (water-soluble wax bars) on top of the black gesso. For the quote I simply dipped my bamboo sketching pen into white acrylic Ink and kept writing.

It was fun – and I love how the white pops off the black and I had lot’s of fun using the stamps in this way.

Photos of the Art Journaling Live 2015 Event

Exactly 48 hours after I landed in Newark after my trip to Europe, I was back at the airport to head out to Arlington, Texas for the Create Art Journaling Live 2015 Event. After a mayor delay  and a pretty insane flight – which I add to my “gotta great travel story to tell ” repertoire I arrived late in Dallas. As I had a dinner date with my sweet friend Julie and Margaret and Jackie, I went by taxi right to the restaurant from the airport. Only…due to a major miscommunication, I went to the wrong restaurant in Plano and not in Dallas. Which left me alone and pretty much throwing a pitty party for myself and exhausted on a parking lot in the middle of nowhere in Texas. But good friends don’t let you hanging and so Julie, Margaret and Jackie drove to get me. In the end my very first huge pile of Smoked Texan BBQ Ribs and a good drink as well as lots of laughter made me feel as if the world was still awesome ;) Thank you girls <3

The next morning the event took place – and Julie Fei-Fan Balzer, Dina Wakely, Mary Beth Shaw and I taught some fun Art Journaling Techniques.

We had 75 students and it was so much fun to see so many familiar faces in the round. Thank you for coming – that was awesome!

The classes and the students were video graphed during the day and in a couple months you can actually purchase the whole event as a class DVD. I will keep you posted.

As you can see we were sitting a bit on a high podest (here is Dina in action) – which was a bit awkward since we couldn’t walk around or move much- and if you know me I am usually bouncing around like a rubber ball  in my classes. But it was the way it needed to be for the filming. The students could see everything on a big screen and followed along and it was fun to see what they are doing too.

Here I am on my “throne” – I was really nervous before the whole thing, I have never taught such a big class and on top being on camera too – but then I forgot the cameras and kept on going …and melting…as you can see the huge light.

What a fun time we had at our Art Mesa Mixed Media Workshops in Madrid. We had students coming from all over Spain – Madrid, Barcelona, Salamanca, Malaga, Valencia etc. We had a fantastic group of students and it was so good to see so many familiar faces again too! As always my sweet friend Cuchy rocked the organization, translated my workshop and held her own workshop – what a trooper and amazing friend she is !!!
