CREATE Dallas Photos

CREATEDallas_01

I had a great time last weekend in Dallas teaching at the CREATE Mixed Media Retreat. I taught 3 classes: “It’s All About the Layers- Art Journal”, “Encrusted Shrubbery- Canvas” and “Texture Heaven-Art Journal”. We used loads of fun Liquitex goodies- thank you Liquitex for the wonderful goodies I was able to give away!

CREATEDallas_02

I also brought my new stencils – that I just released and it was so much fun to see them used for the first time- wohoo!!! And there was a lot of hands on paint moments :)

CREATEDallas_03

It was great to spend so much time with my students in the day classes- and we laughed a lot…especially about my wrong doings in using “Y’all” …I guess “You’s” is wrong in any event in Texas- LOL

CREATEDallas_04

It was also wonderful to see some of my fellow teachers and friends at the event- we had a lot of fun in our “Liberace-Hotel” (that’s an insider for everyone who was there and a little side note about the hotel interior ;) )

Thank you to all my students- you were awesome and fun and super creative! A special shout out to Bill – rock on man!!!

If you are in Seattle – I will be teaching at the CREATE Seattle event coming up next month. I will teach four workshops

CREATESeattle

“Acrylic Media Demystified”, “Texture Heaven Art Journal”, “Texture Galore Canvas” and “It’s All About The Layers- Art Journal” Class. I will bring loads of fun Liquitex paint media , stencils and stamps to play with . You can sign up here

Photos of CREATE New Jersey

CREATENJ01

CREATE New Jersey was so much fun! I had a great time teaching three days- here are some photos of my classes :

CREATENJ02

Had a great time with my 20 students in the Texture Heaven Art Journal Class, mono printing, stamping, embossing – playing

CREATENJ03

So many beautiful pages – and everyone was quite busy experimenting

CREATENJ04

Loads of Acrylic Paint was used during all the classes

CREATENJ05

And of course every class had to opened with a funny face of mine ;) – here the “It’s All About The Layers – Art Journaling Class”

CREATENJ06

My sweet students were able to get over those faces and made beautiful art journal backgrounds and pages in this day long class…even with a broken a/c and 90 Degrees in the room …

CREATENJ14

CREATENJ07

It was wonderful to get to know so many of my students during the three days and also see how they were connected, some made friends during the class, some have been friends for many years (college room mates, being in the same guild) or mother and daughter, siblings together on a fun creative outing :)

CREATENJ08

CREATENJ09

CREATENJ10

And it was wonderful to see my stamps and stencils used by my super talented students.

CREATENJ11

CREATENJ12

CREATENJ13

Lot’s of wonderful smiles in my class – you girls were awesome!

CREATENJ16

The last class I taught saturday night was not “Walk like a zombie” as this picture might indicate …rather “Texture Galore  Canvas” and loads of texture we created :)

CREATENJ17

It was a small class with 12 students which was fun …it gives me more time to walk around and talk to students ;)

CREATENJ18

and they had quite some exercise going back and forth between demos

CREATENJ20

And it was also fun to have a special student in the class ;) you would think she was sick of me spending so much time with me ….and yes…she behaved and was  a great student ;)

CREATENJ21

I also took some classes and had an amazing time in Natalya Aikens class, where I learned how to  manipulate photos in photoshop and then print them out on all kinds of different fabrics, like organza, silk etc. Super inspiring and totally out of my usual scheme …I mean fabric…hello!

CREATENJ23

And I took a class with Diana Trout – love her -what a great personality and it was fun to be forced outside of my usual box in my art journal and collaging approach. That is btw the reason why EVERY person who teaches should once in a while take some classes …it is good to be in the student’s shoes and see how this feels.

CREATENJ24

And it was fun to bump into my legendary artist friend  Suze Weinberg at the Artist Faire at the event

CREATENJ25

and as mentioned I enjoyed every single minute and all 500.000 meals (or so it felt) at the hotel in which we were trapped without a car with Julie Fei Fan Balzer

CREATENJ22

I am looking forward to my next CREATE events I teach at in Dallas – September 17-21

10627-Teaching-TX

and in Seattle October 22-26

10107-Create-teaching-SE

I hope to see some of you there – I promise we will have loads of fun !!!

Have a gorgeous day

It was so FAB to meet you in person!!! That alone made my create experience the best! I had so much fun in your class learning about acrylic paints, which I really had not done much with, but am inspired to do more. (Even bought more supplies and paint colors to play with) thank you, thank you for a wonderful class, and for sharing your talent with us!!

I love that pic of you and Julie with Suze, did you all call each other and decide to dress in the same colors? ha ha
Gorgeous art journal pages. It seems like I’m working in my art journal way more than making LO’s these days.

Photos of the Acrylics Demystified Workshop

NatKalbachAcrylicsDemystifiedWS

It was such a great and fun day teaching my Acrylics Demystified Workshop for The Ink Pad in New York City. As with most of the bigger group workshops it took place at the Westbeth Community Room which is the perfect location for those kind of workshops- huge space, lot’s of light, outdoor space and a little kitchen included.

NatKalbach_AD01

We talked a lot about Liquitex Acrylic Paints and Acrylic Inks and Markers. About art supply labeling and the main groups in acrylics.  And then started playful by pooling, puddling and stringing with Liquitex Pouring Medium and String Gel. I showed how to make acrylic skins and demonstrated several possibilities of using them. Perfect way to get over the White Canvas Horror :)

NatKalbach_AD02

Then we sculptured our way up using Liquitex Flexible Modeling Paste -look at Karen’s awesome canvas on the top right and then we explored the possibilities of making your own glazes and playing with layers, translucency and colors in collages.

NatKalbach_AD03

We used Ceramic Stucco, Super Heavy Gesso, Natural Sand played with different Transfer Techniques and it was fun to see how all these little techniques and informations sparked a load of creative ideas for future work and exploration in the heads of my wonderful smiling students.

NatKalbach_AD04

Lastly we did a bit spray painting with Liquitex Spray Paints in the end to cool down outside  .

NatKalbach_AD05

To finish the workshop off I asked everyone what their favorite Acrylic was and which techniques. I was happy to hear that about everything was mentioned at least once with some clear winners on the Liquitex String Gel, Liquitex Super Heavy Gesso and the Liquitex Gel Medium & Varnish and for the techniques Glazing, Texture Creating and Painting with Newspapers

NatKalbach_AD06

thank you girls for such an amazing and fun workshop day . An extra thank you to Linda Brun from Norway who was on vacation in NYC and when she heard I was giving a class signed up. This really touched me especially since she has taken a couple workshops with me in Paris, Belgium and Norway already…so she totally knew what she got herself into ;) Thank you for spending your vacation day with me!!!

I wish you a gorgeous and creative day

Artvergnugen: PanPastel WS at The Ink Pad Photos

NatkalbachWSInkPad_Artvergnugen

This friday I had the pleasure of teaching anotherArtvergnugen Workshop at The Ink Pad in New York City. Artvergnugen is an ongoing Evening Art Journaling Class – once a month I teach with a different medium or tool and it is loads of fun. I love our little group of girls! This time I showed all kinds of techniques and ways on how to use PanPastel, a wonderful pastel medium, in your art journal.

NatKalbach_Artvergnugen01

As you can tell I am very enthusiastic about PanPastels and the girls looked at me first as if I am a bit goo-goo..well I am ..but ha- I got them excited too ;) (Thank you Pamela Young for letting me use the picture)

NatKalbach_ArtVergnugen02

Soon they were playing and trying all kinds of applications and techniques

NatKalbach_ArtVergnugen03

Pamela loved how she could layer all kinds of different techniques to build up a page

NatKalbach_ArtVergnugen04

Wendy obviously loved playing with the Versamark Techniques I showed ;)

NatKalbach_ArtVergnugen05

Jane loved the Stamping Techniques :)

NatKalbach_ArtVergnugen06

Lisa loved playing with Stencils and PanPastel

NatKalbach_ArtVergnugen07

Sandra really liked being photographed ;) just kidding- she liked the stenciling best too I think :)

NatKalbach_ArtVergnugen08

And Sandy loved the vibrancy of the colors

NatKalbach_ArtVergnugen09

Ana loved how you could blend the colors and also the stenciling

NatKalbach_ArtVergnugen10

And finally Diane really loved her page with all kinds of different techniques ..and I love it too :)

NatKalbach_ArtVergnugen11

The next and last Artvergnugen is on June 27 – I believe there is one seat left – the theme will be Oilpastels/Artbars – I would love to see you :)

If you would like to learn the techniques and actually many many more  then what I taught in The Ink Pad on how to use PanPastels, sign up for my Online PanPastel Class.

In five lessons you will learn the basics, all kinds of surfaces and techniques you can use the PanPastels with and I will show you several projects including a nice wooden canvas and a scrapbooking layout using them too. And you don’t have to travel to New York for this…although…it would be fun, right? You can take the class in your Jammies, whereever you are , whenever you want :) More details on the class here

Wishing you a wonderful day

Artvergnugen: Spray Ink Splash at The Ink Pad Photos

NatkalbachWSInkPad_Artvergnugen

This friday I had the pleasure of teaching another Artvergnugen Workshop at The Ink Pad in New York City. Artvergnugen is an ongoing Evening Art Journaling Class – once a month I teach with a different medium or tool and it is loads of fun. This Friday it was all about:

NatKalbach_AVMarch02

The Dylusions and Lindy’s Stamp Gang were both equally loved- since they are different but both are very vibrant and beautiful it was fun to explore the different techniques and applications you can use them for in an art journal. I do love them both a lot – for different reasons  :)

NatKalbach_AVMarch03

I must say I love the ongoing concept of the Artvergnugen Class at The Ink Pad – it is a good challenge for me, because I constantly have to adjust to a new medium, it is very technique based and I do have people that have been in the last class but some are new and cannot just pick up at pages from the last Artvergnugen class.

NatKalbach_AVMarch04

Nice ghosting here, Diane …

NatKalbach_AVMarch05

and yummie abstract backgrounds that are a perfect base for an art journal page – love it!

NatKalbach_AVMarch06

I love those girls- they all love to experiment…and get their hands messy ;)

NatKalbach_AVMarch07

Plus I come out every time inspired by a color combination I have to use in my next project :) Green, Yellow and Pink..oh yes!

NatKalbach_AVMarch08

Lot’s of stencils used

NatKalbach_AVMarch09

and smiling faces :) – I cannot wait to see how Karen will finish up this page …

NatKalbach_AVMarch10

Awesome page by Cheiron picking up a page from last week and continuing with the new techniques- love it!

NatKalbach_AVMarch01

The next Artvergnugen class will be about: Stencil Madness on April 25. There is a waiting list for this date. The May and June dates and themes will come out soon – Artvergnugen…it is what makes your journal a piece of art :)

If you could attend an Artvergnugen class by me…which medium or tool would you like to play with? We had Stamps, Mono printing and Spray Paints so far :)

Have a gorgeous day

Photos of Taste of Collage Workshop

NatKalbach_ATOC01

Julie Fei-Fan Balzer and I taught our Taste of Collage workshop yesterday at The Ink Pad in New York City.

NatKalbach_ATOC02

We had an amazing group of 25 students – some coming from pretty far away and some are from the New York and New Jersey area :) In a way it reminded me a bit of our 2011 Mixed Media Circus Julie and I had organized in Germany …the room, the fun, the creativity…just not the temperature ;)

NatKalbach_ATOC03

We taught our collage class alternating throughout the day with the same supplies but with our own approaches in techniques and theories to collage. We have taught with this concept before and I do enjoy it every time. It goes pretty much with our philosophy that there is no right or wrong…there is just different. Just as everyone and everyone’s taste in a class is different…embrace it – as I always say.

NatKalbach_ATOC04

The other advantage of teaching with two teachers is that you can be VERY hands on with students during the class – even if the class is bigger. I love this. The personal interaction and being inspired by my students is my favorite part of a class and I had several moments where I was itching to get to my studio and play during the class (I was fair though and stayed- LOL)

NatKalbach_ATOC05

Teaching with someone else means a lot of trust and respect for the other person…I am very picky about my workshops – I put a lot of thought into them and I want to make people happy and have them have just a good creative, valuable time – so it needs to be someone I know is equally minded AND well it helps of course if you have a close friend being on the same page as you :) I just love Julie – with all her teasing- LOL – and I couldn’t think of any better co-teacher – Julie, you inspire me constantly and I think we make a good team ;)

NatKalbach_ATOC06

I think you can tell we had a great time – and we do hope our students had too. The collage results were amazing! Splish, Splash, Paint, Rip, Cut, Cover, “Killing Babies” and “Getting” over the Pretty…no problem for those girls! And what you cannot see in the pictures because we are good in hiding this all ;) – the heater did not work and we were sometimes shuttering our teeth and working with coats and hats on and using the heating guns as heating stations . Another thing that I admired about our students – they knew that there was nothing we all could have done about it and they just lived through it with a real NY/NJ attitude and created the heck out of their supplies :) You rock!

NatKalbach_ATOC07

Thank you also to The Ink Pad for organizing and having us- you are wonderful and I am looking forward being back this Friday for more Artvergnugen :) and on June 8, 2014 for a day long class called “Acrylic Media -Demystified” . It is a class I always wanted to teach in person…here is a sneak – all details will be up the next days on The Ink Pad website  and you can sign up already by calling the store.

Ostsee Scrap in Germany – May 23-25, 2014

Einfaches CMYK

So looking forward to be back at this wonderful event – since it is in Germany …and in German…I will post the details about it in German…:)

Freitag – 13.00-16.00 Uhr – Haptik-Nicht-So

HaptikNichtSo
