Buzz of the City

I am taking a Drypoint Etching Class and I am so loving the whole process! The powerhouse etching on the right was an experiment and it did come out not as I wished but I still liked it so I wanted to add it to my art journal.

I will share some photos of the class and samples soon. For the print above I experimented printing on a monotyped piece of paper. As some of you might now I love the Powerhouse here in Jersey City so it is a repeating theme in my artwork and I even made a stamp with it :)

I like the idea of adding prints into my art journal – I am still exploring this. I am also thinking of buying a small printing press that is not costing a fortune but I am careful and still investigating.
Does anyone of you have experiences with small converted die cut machines or small letter press to use with drypoint or lino cuts? I would love to hear your thoughts and experiences!

I am thinking that you can add architect to your list of artist and paralegal.
Enjoy your weekend Nat!-

Stroll Through The Hood – January 2018

Time for a Stroll Through the Hood . Strolls through my hood get me out of my studio, they help me unstuck and often I get inspired by what I see and to get new ideas to create something. It is part of my philosophy about Artful Adventures in Mixed Media – which is the subject of my book. Here are some photos that I gathered in the last couple weeks.

Pretty cold her most of the days for strolling but still have some seen some fun stuff. The picture above shows part of a door I saw in Lower Manhattan -it is so cool!

If you remember Ken-No-More – the pumpkin I showed in one of my former strolls this fellow has replaced Ken on a neighboring window. I start to think the guys in that house have a really fun humor :)

On New Year’s Day my husband and I walked down the Liberty State Park- booooyy it soo cold and nobody was out there- but it was a beautiful walk. Never getting tired of the view of the city from the park.

Not all glory and shine the day after a snow day – pretty hard to cross the street as a pedestrian btw – and yeah …you see right …some snow is yellow ;)

but the view from my studio window was quite nice – I love the untouched snow blanket.

I saw the mural above by Seth Globepainter on my way to my art class – I cannot believe I have missed it so far- I guess I haven’t been a while in that particular area of my hood. Love this so much!

And here we are with a friend eating the first ice cream of the year …it really was a bit too cold- but the guys wanted to do it- so why not ;)
I hope you enjoyed this little cold stroll -see you next month – I hope you will join me on my February Stroll.

Of course I love your strolls Nat.
We eat ice cream here in NH every season so it’s never the first one of the year. LOL
Your deck is sweet…and a nice view from your studio for sure.
Your view of the city is gorgeous…I tend to forget just how close to NYC you really are.
Enjoy your day,
Sue-

The Small Things in Life – Art Journal

I created this Art Journal spread on a snowy day last week – as you can probably guess :)

The lady is drawn on deli paper, stamped and pasted into the journal. I stamped with different of my ArtFoamies Designs and then painted with grey and white. I like how it came out.

For the journaling I used a bamboo sketching pen and ink – I love using a bamboo sketching pen – have you ever seen my video I once made of the match made in heaven? It is a bit older but you might still find it interesting to see how I use those pens with the ink

June 22-24, 2018 3 Day Workshop in Coventry, UK

Birgit Koopsen and I are so excited that we are coming back to teach another 3-Day Workshop in Coventry in the U.K for Art Workshops.
Take a Stroll Around the Block with Birgit and Nat and discover that inspiration is all around you!
In this 3 day workshop, we’ll embark upon a creative scavenger hunt to seek out inspiring clues in our environment. You’ll learn how to turn these inspiring clues into artwork by using inspiration maps, some of Birgit and Nat’s favorite techniques and tools, and your own personal style.
Based on what you have seen on your stroll and how you apply these tips and tricks, you’ll come away with very unique and personal art journal pages that work. In the end, you’ll have learned about pattern design, composition, and other Elements and Principles of art and a new technique for gathering inspiration for your art-making.
After these three days you’ll know how to find and look for inspiration in architecture, street art, nature and museums and how to translate all this into meaningful and creative artwork.
I hope you will join us, we had such an awesome class last year in Coventry- you can see some pictures of the 3Day Workshop back then here.
Here is a little video where Birgit and I are talking a bit more about the workshop and what we will do:

Too Many Thoughts – Art Journal

“I am too little butter on too much bread. I am too many thoughts in too little head” – Tyler Knott Gregson
This started actually out as many different approaches to a background and thinks just didn’t work out the way I wanted and once I just started covering it up with the gold I fell in love with the antique- streak look and left it. There -problem solved ;)

The girl is mainly on deli paper with I stamped and painted and layered Neopastels on top. Her eyes are a bit off but I can live with that …Moving on is the motto ;)

Love how the foam stamped pattern shows is slightly visible through the gold layer.

For All I Know – Art Journal

I have been working on a big assignment and some personal tasks lately which have me stressed out a bit …so a little art journaling mantra is keeping me sane ;)

some stamping with my RubberMoon stamp sets and I used Neopastels to paint inside the ink transferred figure. I also traced with a pink Neopastel inside the opening of my Manhattan stencil and while I like the outcome, there was a lot of the Neopastel sticking to the stencil which wasn’t easily to get off or transfer to a different spot – so this was probably a one time adventure LOL.

Here are the supplies I used for this spread.

I read somewhere that a soak in water with dishwasher “liquid” soap would remove dried on paint from stencils. Maybe it will work with your neopastels too.
-
nathalie-kalbach
I will try that Lois. My best experience so far is with Murphy’s Oil- but I usually do not remove paint as long as it is acrylic paint. I will give it a try :)Thank you

Sue Clarke
Do you put something over the neopastels so that they don’t smudge on the opposite page when the journal is closed?
-
nathalie-kalbach
Sue, if the layer of neopastels is not too thick it is not a problem, but in this case where it is very thick I put half a sheet of delipaper in between the pages to keep it from transferring to the other side.

I had to look up drypoint etching :) It looks fascinating and fun. Cant wait to see more posts on it!
