So excited & I just can’t hide it! Liquitex Acrylic Painting Sets

Wohoo- finally I can share. I am so so stoked that Liquitex included some of my art work on four of their new Michaels Acrylic Painting Sets. I am sure some of you might recognize quite a couple familiar images :)

As you know I am a huge fan of the Liquitex Products and use them for a couple years now because I really love how the products emphasize my artwork and because they are innovative and fun and make me create out of the box! So thank you Liquitex for asking me for some artwork :)

I have not seen the finished sets in the stores yet myself as I have no car and Michaels store in walking distance but my friend Meike from Texas sent me those pictures- so much fun!

    So lucky to have those! I can only order them online, in Romania there is only one shop I’ve seen to have these amazing acrylic paints. The prices here are much higher as we work with euros…well, art is not something cheap, either! :)

Witnessed – Canvas

A new canvas is done- I call it “Witnessed” . It shows the Stanley Theatre on the right – a very beautiful theater here in Jersey City- right across another beautiful one- the Loew’s Theatre.

As the story goes the theatre was terribly neglected and falling apart, until it was purchased by Jehovah’s Witnesses. Loads of volunteers worked on brining it back to old time glory- and I heard it looks beautiful inside.

I find it fascinating how a building can be saved and used for something else as it was intended when it was built. It reminds me on the many discussions if it is ok to use a church that falls apart and turn it into an apartment building.  I am glad this building is still here and I stopped when I walked by and enjoyed and witnessed it’s outside beauty.

    Not in my neighborhood, but in the historical part of my home town, there are old cottage homes that are now little stores that sell vintage and antique goodies or homemade cup cakes etc. It is always fun to stroll their sidewalks and shop till you drop!

I met Keren in my class at CHA this January  which was awesome, but I  have been seeing her wonderful work for quite a while now. I was super thrilled that she was using my stamps and including templates – so let her show you what fun Scrapbooking Projects she did with them

My name is Keren Tamir and I’m 39 years old. I am a wife to a wonderful husband who is very supportive of my scrapbooking and a mother of two amazing kids; a 13 year old boy and a 7 years old girl. I’ve been scrapbooking for 11 years and I mainly scrapbook about my family. I love to create and experiment with many different mediums and techniques.

My style incorporates a lot of mixed media but I love to use lots of flowers and vines in my projects. I also love using lots of different mediums on my layouts as well as stamps and stencils. My style is always evolving and that’s one of the things I love about this art.

One of the main reasons I started scrapbooking was to preserve memories and photos for my children. However over the last couple of years, I’ve started to enjoy another aspect of scrapbooking. I love the artistic outlet that it gives me. I love to create and I’m passionate about what I do.

These stamps are just so amazing because they create texture on my projects. I love using them to create different types of backgrounds on my designs. The stamps are so versatile and can be used for many different types of projects such as layouts, tags or OTP’s.

I met Riikka several times online and offline as my student in my Mixed Media classes and it has always been a delight to have this super talented girl. I love what she did with my stamps and templates so without further ado..here is what Riikka has to say and show herself :)

Hello there! I am Riikka Kovasin. I’m a mixed media style scrapbooker from Finland. I adore getting my hands into paints and mists! To me the process of creating is equally important than the finished page. I think that scrapbooking is a form of self-expression and I’m creating pages partly because of that and partly because I want to document our lives to my two children.

I was fortunate enough to meet Nathalie during an event by her and Birgit Koopsen in the Netherlands. There I got the chance to see her stencils live and bought myself one of them. I immediately fell in love with the crackle stencil and now I only regret that I didn’t get other designs, too! I’ve used the stencil in several projects already and my husband was inspired by it when he was designing his guitar. In these projects I used it to make an embossed piece of vellum.

I like how versatile the pattern is and how you can create a subtle effect with it or go bold. It goes perfectly to vintage style, but can also be used in modern ones!

When I first saw Nathalie’s stamp designs I knew I had to get some! They are so perfect for backgrounds and layering! They’re unique in their designs and have a lovely mixed media feeling in them.

I love the circular designs and my absolute favorite is the stitched style circle.

And who wouldn’t like something extra – I love the fact that all the sets include a stencil, too!

I used the extra stencil in the other layout to create the background and the “Wired” stamp set in both layouts and the cards.

Thank you so much Riikka, I love how you used the Crackle Stencil on the vellum and the beautiful colorful way with embossing powders you used the stencil in the Wired Stamp Set as well as the Stamps. Gorgeous!

Judi and I met several years ago at CHA and ever since I have been blessed by her friendship, advice and honest opinion in many fields of my artistic life. About Judi:

Judi Kauffman wears, and has always worn, many hats at the same time. She is a designer, writer, and teacher who has worked in the craft industry for over 25 years. She has also been a graphic artist, art director, photo stylist, illustrator, and weaver. She has an undergraduate degree in printmaking and a master’s in fibers. Judi’s projects, articles, and reviews appear in a wide variety of magazines, she works for several manufacturers in design and product development. She is a frequent guest artist for Elizabeth Craft Designs, Walnut Hollow, StencilGirl Products, and other manufacturers. She has also written five books (alas, all now out of print).

Thank you for inviting me! My project: Cards made with nothing but rectangles! But there are other options for stamped and stenciled Shimmer Sheetz: Mat and frame your creations instead of using them for card fronts. Incorporate pieces into art journals and mixed media projects. Stamp and stencil with alcohol inks formulated for non-porous surfaces instead of paint (StazOn). Stitch the layers instead of using adhesive (set the machine to 5-6 stitches per inch, or use a piercing tool and hand-sew).

1. Stamp and stencil three 5” x 12” pieces (one package) of Fire Opal Gemstones Shimmer Sheetz using acrylic craft paint (shown: Primary Yellow, Sea Breeze, Metallic Bronze, and Traditional Raw Umber – or choose your own combination).

2. When the paint is dry, cut 2 of the pieces into thirds, each piece measuring 4” x 5”, for six of the cards.

3. Cut the remaining piece into assorted smaller rectangles, at least 5 of which are sized at 2.5” x 3.5”.

4. Cut a piece of cardstock measuring 9” x 5.5” for each card base (make seven). Score and fold in half (card size: 4.5” x 5.5”, folded at the left).

***Use double-sided adhesive strips for steps 5, 7, and 8.

5. Center and adhere a 4” x 5” Shimmer Sheetz rectangle on six card bases. Center and adhere a 2.5” x 3.5” piece of solid color cardstock on the seventh card base.

6. For added texture, emboss some of the small rectangles with Lots of Dots embossing folder, lightly sand to tone down the shine and highlight the dots.

7. Mat some of the small rectangles onto solid color cardstock, leaving a narrow border.

8. Arrange and rearrange the pieces, layering them as shown or as you prefer. Attach the layers. (Use the last couple of scraps for the seventh card.)

9. Using strong-hold Tombow Power Tabs to secure embellishments (found objects, beads, gems, charms, fibers).

10. Cards with low relief, unbreakable embellishments can be mailed in standard envelopes, others should be delivered in person or mailed between sturdy cardboard in a padded envelope.

Note: Shimmer Sheetz is reflective and difficult to capture in photographs, it changes color depending on the light and angle at which it’s viewed! Fire Opal is my favorite, but there are over 20 other choices (including sampler packs).

    I think I have that butterfly :P I’ve never worked with shimmer sheets, but I love that change of colors from different angles. I love the patterns you made with the stencils, stamps and inks.       Brenda, Shimmeer Sheetz is waterproof, colorfast (garment-quaity) Mylar so it can be used for projects like these cards as well as to make embellishments for art quilts, mixed media – and I’ve made custom sequins for clothing, too.     Wow, love these cards! I’ve used Shimmer Sheetz a lot, and I think the use of these stamps with acrylic paint shows yet another cool use of those Sheetz. I know the cards must be even more stunning in person when you see the shine of the Shimmer Sheetz come through between the paint. Very cool stamps, by the way. The one that looks like a sunburst looks really cool on the cards. Well done, both of you! :-)

Abstract Mini Canvases

I am on my way to NAMTA Art Materials World in Pittsburgh today. Stampendous! will have a booth there too and these are some mini canvases I created using my Stampendous! Signature stamps.

Basically I created a background for each canvas with different color combinations using Acrylic Inks or Soft Body Acrylic Paint – having some fun dripping and dropping

Using the templates that are included in my stamp packages with Soft Body and/or Heavy Body Acrylic Paints I added another layer.

For the third layer I used the Stamps with an Embossing Pad and added various Aged Embossing Powders on top of it.

Carefully heat embossed it as to not burn canvas and/or acrylic paints

I then used the stamps with acrylic paints and added some colors here and there and tied some elements together

Put a Bird on it …or Playing with Transfer Techniques

I was working on a fun assignment and created this grungy transfer for it. I printed out a nice photo of a graffiti wall which I had taken back in Germany and blew it up and then did the Transfer using Liquitex Gloss Gel. For a nice and even sheen I glazed over the transfer with some Liquitex Acrylic Inks mixed with Gloss Medium & Varnish – filling in the gaps too . I love the kind of torn poster wall effect this gave . This was exactly what I was going for.

I collaged over some parts and painted in the bird with a brush and black ink. Also sprinkled some of the ink with a brush on the paper. I glued down some bird feathers with the Gel Medium and voila – done. Love it.

I will teach this as part of my upcoming class “Acrylic Media – Demystified” at the Ink Pad in NYC -so if you want to join – I would love to have you. The class will take place at Westbeth in the West Village and we will explore loads of fun media and techniques.

Limor Webber is a mixed media artist and educator.  She is a mother of two beautiful little girls that absolutely rule her world and a wife to a supportive husband. Limor is a technique and art medium addict! She can sit in her studio for hours trying to come up with new ideas and techniques that she can share with the world.

I met Limor on the Prima Education team and it has been great fun to be around her and her contagious smile and talent!

For all you Mixed Media junkies, you know how we all have that one stamp set we keep on reaching for every time we create any project and we say to ourselves,” it’s just not complete without it”.  Well that’s how I feel about all three of these stamp sets!! They never get put away, they have a permanent spot on my craft desk since the day I got them.  The reason I love them so much as you can see is because they make fabulous background effects but can be used in a subtle way or as a more bold focus point on your project.  Do you want to know a little secret that would make your heart sing?! The first day I opened up my sets and I pulled them out…. hiding behind the stamps were some fabulous bonus Stencils!!!!!.  Needless to say they have become my new favorite staple in my creation! way to go Nathalie!!! you sure rocked these stamps sets out!.

    Love those tags and yes, Limor does always have them very close at hand. Such depth and texture can be created with these stamps, I can see they’d be used often. Fantastic stamp sets…. They’re on my soon to be fulfilled wish list.

    Those tags are so colorful and full of texture. I’m not sure which stamp set I need first. Mish Mash or Wired as they are both calling out to me.
