How to use a StampBuddy

I want to share with you one of my favorite tools to use with foam stamps – a StampBuddy! It’s a nice soft nappy foam surface that you can use with paint media so that it becomes an ink pad for your foam stamps. This is my go-to technique when I want to do a lot of repeat stamping for say making a repeating pattern, background, gift wrap, and such. If I know I want to stamp the same color over and over in an efficient and clean way, I use a StampBuddy.

A Stampbuddy holds your paint media, keeping an even amount ready to go for your stamping. I generally apply paint to it using a paintbrush or an old gift card/key card, spreading it around in the area I need. You can get a good overview of my process in this blog post where I use my Versailles Positive Negative set and a few colors of acrylic paint for a colorful pattern. Check out the post here.

See a StampBuddy in action – here’s a recent video I made for the Beyond the Paper workshop that shows how you can use a StampBuddy for complex patterns with multiple colors. In the video I am using the Triple Play stamp set.

In the video, you see a trick that I use often – stamping onto the StampBuddy with an archival ink to have a guide. This helps me use multiple colors at the same time and it helps with registration. You can see me doing it in this video as well:

Of course you don’t have to do this. Creative Squad alum Michelle Rydell shows us in this post how she stamps the Versailles set with excellent results:

Using one color is a snap too – it helps make crisp, efficient impressions. In this post Creative Squad Alum Emilie Murphy uses her StampBuddy to stamp my Valley Road and Buenos Aires Border stamps with black paint.

Maybe fabric paint and sewing projects are your jam? I’m a fan too and I recommend taking some pointers from Creative Squad alum Marsha Valk in this post – she uses a StampBuddy with my Mid Century Squared and Groovy foam stamps, along with acrylic paint and fabric medium. After stamping on her fabric, she creates a really cool tote bag.

However you use your StampBuddy and Foam Stamps, here are a couple tips:

  • The StampBuddy will hold a lot of paint, so use it only if you have time to actually use it up in one session or when you want to do the different color method.
  • You can store the StampBuddy with paint in a ziploc bag for a day or two if you want to continue stamping the next day but if it is not a lot of paint in there, it will dry into the StampBuddy and then you cannot use it anymore- be careful
  • I used the paint up by stamping a sheet of gift wrapping paper – boom – one sheet down for the next presents.
  • Clean the StampBuddy when you are done with your creative time, wash it out with water until the water is clear. The stamped archival ink impression will remain on your StampBuddy. Do not let paint dry on the StampBuddy
  • Clean your Foam Stamp – I know there are different approaches- I do not clean it super crazy scrubby, but I want most of the acrylic paint off. For me this is a foam stamp and it should remain cushiony as this is what creates this kind of impression and it also lets me use other paint media than just acrylic paint on it.
  • Only use a small amount of paint with your StampBuddy – you will be surprised how far it will get you and it also prevents paint from seeping into the creases of your stamps- which a) wastes paint, b) makes it harder to clean up your stamp, and c) gives less nice stamped images.

I hope this has helped you see how you can use a StampBuddy the next time you get your ArtFoamies out for some fun.

April ArtFoamies Challenge – Day 29 & 30

Last two days of Nat and Sarah’s April ArtFoamies Challenge! Can you believe it? April flew by and now I have a nice bit of my vintage ledger filled with different ArtFoamies patterns. Today I’m recapping April 29 and 30 but I definitely recommend checking out all the action on instagram to see what Sarah and I and all who played along did with the challenge. Thank you for joining in!

April 29 – Lines – Definitely had to use my Central Ave Positive and Negative Stamp for this one and wanted to fill in and layer with my Broadway Fan Stamp …apparently this pattern was too hard for pre coffee stamping LOL – I had to pause several times to get my act together. Sometimes the simple patterns make your brain tangle ;)

And here is a look at April 29:

April 30 – Friendship – Woohoo right on time I got Sarah’s gorgeous Abstract Sunflower ArtFoamie – and you know  we are not only friends because I love Sunflowers too :) I used my Love Story Foam Stamp which is a limited edition for Creative JumpStart 2021 with it. Check it out:

Another look at April 30:

My heart is full for having had such an awesome time with Sarah this month playing with our stamps together and seeing so many of you join us. Thank you Sarah for the fun …until next April LOL ;) Don’t miss Sarah and me for our next ArtCollab ZoomCast on May 4th where we talk about “I can’t do that” and show you what we did with the challenge we gave each other in the last episode.

April ArtFoamies Challenge – Day 27 & 28

We’re in the home stretch of Nat and Sarah’s April ArtFoamies Challenge and today I’m recapping April 27 and 28.

Day 27 – Tile – Blue tiles …they make me think of Lisboa and make me long for a nice long vacation there. I do miss traveling but until that works for me again… I will just live through my visual cues provided by my foam stamps that were often inspired by my travels. Here I used my Van Vorst pos neg set.

Here is a look:

April 28 – Abstract – I used the hexagon shape as a solid stamp and then added some Wabi Sabi on top with Neato and Far Out. I am a bit sad that this challenge is coming to an end – I haven’t really gotten to the end of making patterns… Oh well, I still have another million pages in my ledger to go and I’m working on some new designs so I think they will move in here with some patterns as well ;)

April ArtFoamies Challenge – Day 26

We’re recapping Nat and Sarah’s April ArtFoamies Challenge today with April 26 – are you playing along with us? Be sure to tag #artcollabChallengeAccepted – we’d love to see what you are making!

April 26 – Bird – Oh man …honestly not my favorite of all the prints- I was thinking the positive and negative Fairview Fan stamps that slightly look a bit like bird heads would be perfect for this in brown and red …kind of like red robin …but it really did not come out the way I wanted it to…the yellow “beak” printed with one of my rubber stamps made it slightly better but I would rather just put a bird on this one and move on ;)

April ArtFoamies Challenge – Day 24 & 25

Recapping Nat and Sarah’s April ArtFoamies Challenge today for April 24 and 25. You can follow along on my Instagram feed daily with videos and photos too.

Day 24 – Castle – Another stamp from my Mini Motifs Stamp set inspired by our fireplaces. This one always reminds me  of a little castle – maybe because it is part of our home. I thought the triangle stamp from the Triple Play set would make a nice addition to the pattern …if only I could have stamped more straight …boy oh boy ..but it is cool- I see this coming up in the future again.

Here is a look at April 24:

April 25 – Print – My MidCentury Squared Stamp is always reminding me of wallpaper from that time -so I wanted to play a bit with stamping layered on top in different directions and different colors. I really like this- I would take a printed wallpaper like this :)

April ArtFoamies Challenge – Day 22 & 23

Are you playing along with Nat and Sarah’s April ArtFoamies Challenge ? You can follow along on my Instagram feed daily with videos and photos, and I post updates here on the blog too. Today I’m recapping 22 and 23. Enjoy!

Day 22 – Fantastic –

Not a surprise here…since I have been creating a ton of fan shaped stamps for a while. The shape and possibility to add pattern to it just makes me super happy! So here is a bunch of fantastic stamps ;) including Broadway Fan, Fairview Fan, Jewett Fan, and Van Vorst Fan.

Here is a look at those Fantastic Fans!

April 23 – Grid – Had to be the Manhattan Positive and Negative Stamp set. Of course I screwed it up in the middle of the stamping – just like you get lost in Manhattan when you do not pay attention. The trick is to just pretend you wanted to go that route anyway… and then all is good and you are mastering the grid.

Here is a look at that April 23 Grid:

April ArtFoamies Challenge – Day 19, 20 & 21

Are you playing along with Nat and Sarah’s April ArtFoamies Challenge ? You can follow along on my Instagram feed daily with videos and photos, and I post updates here on the blog too from time to time throughout the month. Today I’m recapping 19, 20, and 21. Enjoy!

Day 19 – Circle – These Mini Motifs foam stamps are inspired by carvings in our fireplaces. Every one of the four mantles has different carvings. That Dude went all out with the chiseling. He must have known that 140 years later a weird lady from Germany would become obsessed with the patterns on the fireplaces …and there we come full circle.

Here is a look at April 19:

April 20 – Stellar – Started out with the Beacon Stamp from the Mini Tile Set as it makes excellent start patterns but then I thought it really needed more and added the Santiago stamp as an accent on top. Stellar decision if I dare to say so …patting myself on the back – LOL

Here is another look:

April 21 – Hip Hop – Mixing the very graphic Space Oddity hexagon stamp up with one of the triangle stamps from our Triple Play stamp set created by Marsha Valk, Birgit Koopsen and me. The design for this Triple Play triangle is actually by Marsha and I love how those two go together. Nice fusion.

April ArtFoamies Challenge – Day 18

Are you playing along with Nat and Sarah’s April ArtFoamies Challenge ? You can follow along on my Instagram feed daily with videos and photos, and I post updates here on the blog too from time to time throughout the month. Today I’m recapping Day 18!

Day 18 – Pattern – Playing with my stamps and making up new patterns is one of my favorite things to do as a breather moment. I rarely plan it out – which is probably a huge difference to anyone who is a pattern maker but I just love the random grabbing of two or more stamps and giving it a go. And well, I really like this pattern with my Manhattan and one of the Triple Play stamps… I take it ;)

Everyone approaches Challenges differently. This ArtFoamies Challenge that Sarah Matthews and I came up with has had me thinking about how I want to approach it. In the past my Foam Stamplifier Challenge #foamstamplifierchallenge I used all kinds of different media, so I didn’t want to repeat myself. I also thought about how Sarah usually uses ArtFoamies with ink pads, while I use acrylic paints and the first parameter became clear: I will only use ink pads for the challenge. The other challenge is that I purchased an old ledger journal and I want to turn it into a pattern book. I usually make my own pattern books by binding loose printed papers into a book. This method has the advantage that if a print doesn’t turn out too great it can be discarded. By printing directly into this 125 year old ledger I have no out. So using my foam stamp designs to create patterns into a ledger book with ink pads is my challenge for this month.
