Blog: Jersey City

When Artsy Friends Take Time Off

NatKalbach_AHG_01

One of the greatest things is when your art making passion that you share with others, turns into friendships …over Continents and States. Two weeks ago my friend Birgit Koopsen came from The Netherlands not only to teach a workshop together with me but also for a  week long visit.

NatKalbach_AHG_02

And what better reason to get the Art House crew back together- and have Jenn Mason coming from Boston and Julie Fei-Fan Balzer from NYC. The four of us had a great time touristing in New Jersey and New York City just taking a time off from everything and have some good old girly fun. So here is some picture overload …

NatKalbach_AHG_03

Birgit loved playing with her panorama mode. Sometimes it worked…

NatKalbach_AHG_04

and sometimes it didn’t when she tried to get all four of us into the picture at the dinner table – LOL

NatKalbach_AHG_05

Strolling around in Jersey City…can’t beat our view of the city :)

NatKalbach_AHG_06

and our street art is also pretty cool. (mural by Fintan Magee)

NatKalbach_AHG_09

Lot’s of evenings on our deck enjoying sunsets

NatKalbach_AHG_07

The Brooklyn Bridge had to be stepped on

NatKalbach_AHG_08

Dim Sum had to be eaten in Chinatown …lot’s of it…

NatKalbach_AHG_10

And Bubble Tea had to be drunken …once….and never ever again as Birgit and I agreed on – LOL

NatKalbach_AHG_11

We took the ferry to Ellis Island

NatKalbach_AHG_12

and showed AMAZING photo skills taking photos of the FOUR of us WITH the Statue of Liberty

NatKalbach_AHG_13

We waved at Lady Liberty and the long lines to get to her

NatKalbach_AHG_14

By which time one of us had finally figured out how to shoot a photo of all five of us :)

NatKalbach_AHG_15

We found Julie’s grandparents inscribed on Ellis Island

NatKalbach_AHG_16

and had Jenn sing Country songs to the amusement of the two Europeans in the group.

NatKalbach_AHG_18

I took Birgit to a walk through Liberty State Park while the two Americans made their way back to the City.

NatKalbach_AHG_19

And joined the two the next day again where we decided at MoMA that art is often taken way to serious

NatKalbach_AHG_20

I mean… WAY TO SERIOUS

NatKalbach_AHG_21

And because Birgit and I were by then used to daily 14 miles walks…we walked the Highline…where she became part of a billboard

NatKalbach_AHG_22

…and we walked

NatKalbach_AHG_23

and had even my husband joining us walking…it was a whole Forest Gump Troop

NatKalbach_AHG_24

And made sure to fulfill Birgit’s wish to find a Yankees Shirt. That is one triumphant face for Julie…who is a Red Sox Fan – hey Julie: Take that – we rubbed the Yankees Shirt onto your TV sofa…LOL

NatKalbach_AHG_25

And got an amazing shot of the three of us and the Rockefeller Center

NatKalbach_AHG_26

And looked from the Top of Rock over all the areas in Manhattan and Jersey City we had been walked through.

NatKalbach_AHG_27

And that is the end of a fab inspiring and relaxing week with my girls …It was loads of fun and I miss Birgit a lot.

But I know we will see each other next year…for sure ;)

What did you do the last time you took some time off?

Have an amazing day!

Love all the photos and how cool that Julie found her grandparents on the plaque. I always enjoy the pics of street art that you find Nat. The last time I hung out with my girlfriends we took the dogs for a long walk on a beach and it was a blast. Followed by some delightful food of course.

Whose Front Yard? – Canvas

NatKalbach_WhoseFrontYard01

A new canvas finished – I had a great time painting. It took me quite a while to finish it deciding when to finish :) That is always the hardest part, don’t you think?

NatKalbach_WhoseFrontYard02

I used Liquitex Soft Body and Heavy Body Acrylic Paints as well as Markers, Inks and Spray Paints. I made a lot of marks with the Liquitex Freestyle Palette knife – I love using it to create texture and marks into the wet but also into the dried paint.

NatKalbach_WhoseFrontYard03

I am thinking about having this one scanned, too, and make it available as prints. What do you think? (I will add the prints to my shop as soon as they are ready.)

Wishing you an amazing start into the week!

Stroll Through The Hood – July 2014

DISCLAIMER: In this Blog Post I make fun of Americans…or maybe more about their vegetation…or maybe it is just nothing – anyway– some might think that nothing is totally inappropriate . If you have a problem with this, you might be better off reading something else . Don’t email me to complain and don’t visit my blog anymore because I might post things like this again  !

NathalieKalbach_Strollhood_Logo

This Paste Up made me smile

NatKalbach_SAug_01

And for the next one I had to do a double take – so fun!

NatKalbach_SAug_02

And I love the frog by Mike Maka

NatKalbach_SAug_03

And mural next to it is by Case

NatKalbach_SAug_04

Other than that I really enjoy the summer here ….and you know since everything is bigger in America …

NatKalbach_SAug_07

This flower is as big as my head- and believe me – my head is not that small!

NatKalbach_SAug_08

The tomatoes grow like weed and they grow so fast…they need to develop stitches to keep intact. This one is probably a Frankenstein species. Delicious – Jersey Tomatoes are awesome!

NatKalbach_SAug_10

And these are …Red Noodle Beans …I mean come on…these are not beans anymore…these are gigantic NOODLE Beans  -very yummy and the whole name is Chinese Red Noodle Bean …so maybe they are not really from America ;)

And now the kicker for my European friends….

NatKalbach_SAug_09

They put LOBSTER in a sandwich roll! Yes…you heard right…Lobster- the stuff that is super duper luxurious and expensive in Europe. The stuff you eat at a fine dining restaurant …they sell that out of a food truck in a sandwich…and it is pretty delicious ;)

Guess they have enough Lobster here .

And what does the Cat say to all this?

NatKalbach_SAug_06

Oh ..sorry Niles-I forgot you are on a diet and you are mad with me

Well -I wish you a gorgeous day and see you soon for the next stroll…I promise I won’t make no fun anymore…;)

Witnessed – Canvas

NatKalbach_Witnessed01

A new canvas is done- I call it “Witnessed” . It shows the Stanley Theatre on the right – a very beautiful theater here in Jersey City- right across another beautiful one- the Loew’s Theatre.

NatKalbach_Witnessed02

As the story goes the theatre was terribly neglected and falling apart, until it was purchased by Jehovah’s Witnesses. Loads of volunteers worked on brining it back to old time glory- and I heard it looks beautiful inside.

NatKalbach_Witnessed03

I find it fascinating how a building can be saved and used for something else as it was intended when it was built. It reminds me on the many discussions if it is ok to use a church that falls apart and turn it into an apartment building.  I am glad this building is still here and I stopped when I walked by and enjoyed and witnessed it’s outside beauty.

NatKalbach_Witnessed04

Do you have a building in your neighbor hood that was turned into something surprisingly?

I used Acrylic Paints, Inks, Markers and Spray Paints, as well as some water-soluble wax bars – and some collage items. Here is a list

Have a wonderful day!

Stroll Through The Hood … the new and old one

DISCLAIMER: This Blog Post contains a picture with a peeing panda – some might think of it as totally inappropriate . If you have a problem with this, you might be better off looking at something else . Don’t email me to complain, don’t visit my blog anymore because I might post things like this again and for sure shield your precious kids’ eyes !

NathalieKalbach_Strollhood_Logo

A lot of times I get asked what inspires me. And one of my key answers is always “a stroll through the hood”. It might be street art, it might be thoughts or feelings connected with certain sights, it might be stuff I find to buy…in one way or the other you might find the photos, the thoughts, the feelings, the colors or anything from those strolls in my art journal, a mixed media project or a scrapbooking layout.

I would love to show you once a month what inspired me while strolling through my neighborhood. I hope you like the little insights into my daily life where I live . This is also a wonderful way for me to remind myself on the inspiring things in the hood. Maybe you get inspired by those posts and even invite ME to a stroll in YOUR hood – feel free to grab the logo and leave a comment for me on the post and share!

This time I am showing you some pictures of my stroll through my old hood in Germany – Hamburg (as I was there in May) and through the new hood in Jersey City :)

NatKalbach_SHJ03

Love this paste up by El Bocho and yes it was so right …because I saw it the morning I came into Hamburg right after the red eye flight…gotta love jet lag…not ;)

NatKalbach_SHJ01

Love this – one of my favorite junk stores with this fun sign reminding me of how much I miss German costumer service …not ;) – Sign reads: “The letters cost 1EUR and up! If you want to bargain because you think that is fun, you pay a higher price!”

If you know the rules you are fine, don’t you think? LOL

NatKalbach_SHJ02

Fun fun fun colors and tile art

NatKalbach_SHJ04

Miss this old squatted theater in the hood…yes, I know some of you might think of it as a terrible eye sore…I love it because this building is it’s last domain standing against tearing down wonderful old buildings in this hood and putting up new unaffordable apartment houses or another expensive empty office building.

NatKalbach_SHJ05

This paste up just made me laugh ….a lot

NatKalbach_SHJ06

and this

And now back to Jersey City – I love my new neighbor hood – there is so much to discover still:

NatKalbach_SHJ07

Here is a street in Little India- so colorful and oh the food ….so good!

NatKalbach_SHJ08

I love this probably 50s sign – and the fire stairs…

NatKalbach_SHJ11

The cast iron around the entrances – so beautiful – I guess it makes sense that this is also referred to as the New Orleans Alley. I met Walt who lives here all his life and is a “bit” older, he told me that the steel workers that lived here a hundred years ago, didn’t like this at all because this reminded them of work. I find it so fascinating how these things change with different people – I sure love it but I might think different if you would put computer screens around my entrance or easels !

NatKalbach_SHJ12

I love this mural by Alice Pasquini  – the colors make me swoon!

NatKalbach_SHJ09

Some pictures of a recent bicycle tour on Liberty State Island. It was beautiful -just a couple minutes and you are out there in some nature and you see the city skylines (Jersey City and New York City) and it is amazing – what a million dollar view…for free :)

NatKalbach_SHJ10

and another one for free

NatKalbach_SHJ14

and this…this is the old train station in Liberty State Park. After the immigrants arrived at Ellis Island and went through the whole ordeal of immigration, all the people that would not stay in New York would start their journey to the rest of America from this train station. Which is now falling apart. Sad…such an amazing place, so much history and so many stories behind it! You can almost hear the hustle and bustle.

NatKalbach_SHJ13

And then there is time for a picnic…with a free view of the Lady and crowded tourist ferries landing at her feed…or mine …or whatever.

I hope you enjoyed this stroll through my old and new hood , you must have liked it…I mean… I showed you a peeing panda, that is pretty impressive, don’t you think?  ;)

have a beautiful day!

An Afternoon at MANA Contemporary in Jersey City

NatKalbach_MC01

My wonderful neighbor and new friend Elena (left) volunteers at Mana Contemporary here in Jersey City and told me that I’d had to go and visit it with her. She offered our friend Kim and me a private tour and so we did. We had a great afternoon – three artists – different fields: an actor, a furniture designer and mixed media artist – spending time together. Now, what is Mana Contemporary? Let me explain this cluster of warehouse buildings in the middle of my city or better Wikipedia explains:

“Mana is a cultural center that opened in May 2011. It provides services, spaces, and programming for artists, collectors, curators, performers, students, and community. It includes artist studios, exhibition spaces, and storage and on top an extension of the fine arts transportation department of Moishe’s Moving Systems.”

And so it could go on. Let me show you a video by Mana Contemporary from last year explaining some planned renovations- some of them already nowadays done – and you get a little sense of how huge and amazing that place is:

Future Renovations at Mana Contemporary from Mana Contemporary on Vimeo.

So – as said we arrived at this amazing building and Elena took us on a tour  and we started with this exhibition by Milton Resnick :

NatKalbach_MC02

The scale of the work and the rooms, the light – just incredible – I am just posting some pictures to tell the story- but in truth- they do not do justice at all- you gotta go!!

NatKalbach_MC03

Be still my heart at the texture and brushstrokes of Milton Resnick. There is so much energy involved in this acidic color palette used . Love it.

NatKalbach_MC04

NatKalbach_MC05

Love how his signature is part of the painting .

NatKalbach_MC06

Amazing.

Left and right to the gallery you have huge storage space for art work …and you walk past a dance rehearsal space shared by Karole Armitage’s and Shen Wei’s troupes, with a glass wall – because one of the immanent and important things happening at Mana is that you can see the process, visit the artists in their studio, you as a viewer can see the art take shape and that makes the whole thing even way more interesting and exciting. For the artists this is a great opportunity as they come out of their studios and eat together in the Mana Restaurant and talk to each other and can collaborate – what a dream …come true! There is nothing more inspiring and sparking in your work as an artist then the discussion and time with other artists.

NatKalbach_MC07

A wonderful Judy Chicago exhibition – here a prototype of one of the Dinner Plates that is part of her installation The Dinner Party which is on permanent exhibition at the Brooklyn Museum.

NatKalbach_MC08

Here is a part of her triptych Rainbow Man Composite

NatKalbach_MC09

We passed the Richard Meir Model Museum, which I would love to see one time

NatKalbach_MC10

Took a look inside Gary Lichtenstein‘s Screen Printing Studio ( I wanna work there for a couple weeks and learn all about it- sigh)

NatKalbach_MC11

We took a walk through some of the artist studios …hello …you and I have something in common ;)

NatKalbach_MC13

And then we walked over in the rain to the Glass Building with the exhibition

ALL THE BEST ARTISTS ARE MY FRIENDS Part I

NatKalbach_MC15

Besides the stunning artwork – that building is just impressive – the light, the construction – and then you start taking in all the art work – again we had the whole space to ourselves – just the three of us…and the work of an unbelievable array of artists featured

Here are a few of my faves: This is by Serban Ionescu – Dow Isolation Town

NatKalbach_MC16

Ai Weiwei with Colored Vases

NatKalbach_MC18

Jay Battle – The Execution of History –

NatKalbach_MC21

and last but not least I show you this by Will Kurtz

NatKalbach_MC23

NatKalbach_MC24

There is so much more to see – so if you are in the area- go and take in the whole experience. If you are in NYC – it is super easy to get to Mana – and it is well worth it. Am I kinda proud to have this in my hood? – you bet I am – this is cool! You are surrounded by stunning artwork, you get the real deal with the breathtaking building and curation and …no admission…yes you heard right – ZERO…and you get a free tour -so …And btw…guess who is more than excited about the news that in her hood a  Street Art and Graffiti Museum will be opened by Mana too? Yep…yours truly.

And how to get to Mana from NYC? Check out this video ..and if you happen to go…shoot me a message – maybe I will join you and even have a nice coffee with you…because I cannot wait to go again – inspiration right in my hood! And if you do not wanna go…well your loss! ;)

Thank you Elena, for this great afternoon and a great tour – you are such an inspiration !

On The Flip Side – Canvas

NatKalbach_OnTheFlipSide01

My new canvas “On The Flip Side” – Jersey City in the background and “our” Lady Liberty . Why “our”? Well…it is in our yard and faces New York…go figure ;)

What a symbol this statue carries, how much hope and how many dreams are connected with it – amazing.

NatKalbach_OnTheFlipSide02

I can see her from my studio window and from the deck and it makes me always happy… What a view when I had my brand new green card in my pocket and we looked for an apartment…it was like a promise for good times to come. So far there are very good times… maybe Lady Liberty is my token of luck ;)

NatKalbach_OnTheFlipSide03

I played with a different background this time and I like the outcome a lot.

But then I’m a sucker for blues and purples! Lady liberty is also an American icon that I love. Dixon Mills ArtShow

NatKalbach_ArtShow01

A couple weeks ago we had a little art show with artwork of the artists living at Dixon Mills and for the residents of Dixon Mills. It was a fun social event in our Social Club and I think there were about 60-70 people. It was not only awesome to be able to show some of my work, but also to connect with the other artists in our old factory buildings and to connect with neighbors. It wasn’t a public event- so I didn’t invite everyone I knew – but I had my sweet friend Julie Fei-Fan Balzer and my friend J. coming over. Hubs unfortunately had to travel.

NatKalbach_ArtShow02

Kim and Josh from Josh Urso Design showed some of their wonderful knoop (dutch for knots) tables and the gorgeous light below (WANT – I love their lamps too!). They create really awesome furniture and lamps with all kinds of awesome and sometimes unexpected materials and resin.

NatKalbach_ArtShow03

Also one of our Residence Artists is Donna Greenberg, a known polymer clay artist. She brought some of her jewelry and beautiful home decor items.

NatKalbach_ArtShow04

And here is us waving to our friend Anke: we found out that we both know Anke Humpert from Germany quite well. Anke and I have met several times doing Mixed Media things together and now she is super thriving in polymer clay art and knows Donna well. (The world is so small…it is not only a saying – remember- I met Maeghan at NAMTA in Pittsburgh- she was at the Artshow too- Loveee her – and when we talked it turned out she lives in the same building – CRAZY!)

NatKalbach_ArtShow05

There were also lot’s of wonderful photographs, glass painting art, mixed media collages and watercolor paintings – but I stink at taking photos when I talk so much- I always forget to take photos when I am talking with so many people. It was a great little show and a wonderful evening and I got a lot of positive reactions and inquiries about my work – including emails the next day. Yes there will be prints. These originals will not be sold yet as they are part of a bigger work theme. Thank you for all of those there and for being so supportive about my work! Here is my big fat happy grin at the end of the show :)

NatKalbach_ArtShow06

This would be the perfect time to stop this post…huh? Wait wait…you have not seen Julie, right? Well- kind of …she is standing behind the knoop table. But – Julie actually slept over and we had a VERY long night, talking and planning and laughing. And then this is how a joint fashionable jammie day looks like ;)

NatKalbach_ArtShow07

She wrote all about our Art Slumber Party here. I do love her- what a good friend she is – and how awesome , she lives so close now..It is 45 mins – btw- she is a true New Yorker whining, if they have to travel outside their little island, but over an hour traveling inside the city to Brooklyn is totally cool- LOL. It takes me as long to Downtown Manhattan as her = 20 mins ; tsss ;) But sorry, I was shifting away..here is Julie writing down our evil plans to take over the art world …

NatKalbach_ArtShow08

And here is me holding up a hostess gift she painted in my studio, trying out my beloved Liquitex Markers…pretty cool. She made sure I hold it up high enough to cover up my Yankees Hoodie – she as a true Red Sox Fan had a hard time looking at it – snigger (I am not even a fan…I am European – I have no clue about Baseball – it is just a nice cozy hoodie- LOL).

NatKalbach_ArtShow09

And that was it…amazing night, amazing day- I was so inspired and full of energy afterwards (despite the fact we slept about 3 hours and I had to teach Friday night ;) ) – I cannot wait until the next Artshow and Art Slumber Party ;)

Have a gorgeous day

How wonderful to be surrounded by that many creative people in your everyday life. Looks like you and Julie had a fun (almost sleepless) adventure.

Watertower Canvas or The Yea or Nay Question

NatKalbach_Watertower01

This is my latest canvas which is a 24×20″ one.

It is pretty textured as I layered Cheesecloth, Bark and Canvas cloth onto the painted background. I worked with Liquitex Acrylic Inks and Paints on the Background

Then used some Liquitex Professional Spray Paints

and lastly painted and touched everything up using Winsor & Newton Oilbars. (I just bought them and gosh do I love them!)

I will show this canvas among others in my Gentrification series today at an art show done by artists of and for residents of Dixon Mills here in Jersey City.

I am excited and nervous to show my work- it will be a small show but still :) My motto today is “The master failed more times then you have even tried” …so here you go, I am putting myself out there and it will be fine :) I am excited to see what people think of it- I am not planning or expecting on selling the work yet but it is the start of whole series with  lot more paintings on the Gentrification topic that I have in mind .  My dream would be a big exhibition on this topic- one can dream, right? But, since a couple of you emailed me and asked if I would sell the one or the other canvas, I was thinking of doing prints of them though- what do you think? Yea or Nay?

Have a wonderful day !

I’m sorry I never commented before – but I absolutely love your large canvases of buildings and pieces of places you live. They are dynamic and full of marvelous color – I would be surprised if you didn’t sell some-prints – definitely. Good luck with the show

The show looked great! Can’t wait to plan a collaboration. A colorful and other-worldly collaboration! We were thinking something during the fall Jersey City Open Studio weekend… If you haven’t been before, it can be a pretty big deal. Love ya! Kim

I like the subject and layout, but the color puts me off because it looks like the whole place is burning. I would not buy anything that had flames all around the buildings.
