I designed these stencils with just this layering possibility in mind – they share the same fan design and scale and can be used together nicely. They also both include open areas for adding more of your own personal style through stamping, colors, or hand drawn elements.
Today I am releasing 8 new stencil designs with StencilGirl Products and am very excited to share them with you! You can check them out now in my Online Shop. I’ve been playing with them for the past month and I just love the diversity of the group – some art deco fan stuff for you pattern lovers, abstract stuff for layering and texture, and more Mid Century motifs because we love modernism :)
Here are the new designs – hope you are as excited as I am to create with them!
First up is Art Deco Empire – I’m showing it here oriented upside down because I think it can work either way and I love how it kind of looks like crowns here.
Next is Art Deco Summit – A nice mix of pattern and solid shapes that I think is perfect for creating a balance of color and open space.
Here is Art Deco Fairview – another that I am showing here upside down to show how you can use it either way. Love this pattern.
Art Nouveau Wallpaper is another that mixes pattern and solid areas so you can really play with color here.
Kyoto is a fun mix of abstract marks that can oomph up your mark making in backgrounds and such.
Tokyo is a more energetic field of marks and again, really awesome for backgrounds.
Space Age Modern is a funky cool modernist pattern that is another fav.
Finally we have Signals – a field of abstract pattern that is ideal for backgrounds, layering, and creating visual texture.

Here is an overview of Prompts 1 and 2:
Day 1 – Standard Let’s start with my standard way to use my stencils – with acrylic paints. The reason I love using acrylic paints is that there are so many fun ways to apply different colors and blend them or mix them up making for some awesome backgrounds or even just small stenciled areas of a page.
My preferred way to apply acrylic paint is using a soft cosmetic sponge or a foam wedge and dab into the paint, then dab off the excess paint and dab over the stencil. The trick is to not have too much paint on your applicator otherwise you won’t get crisp lines and the paint just seeps underneath your stencil.
For the art journal spread here I used three different colors and lined them up next to each other and mixed them up through my Versailles Stencil. Since the application is quite thin it also doesn’t become too muddy and I love how this pops and came out. I just added a little bit of journaling and some of my circle stamps and there you go – an easy peasy art journaling page.
August 2 – Eye Candy
Well to be honest I think anything with stencils looks like eye candy – LOL- but I especially love the way how spray paints applied of stencils look like and how you can apply different colors in different areas.
Since I spray a lot inside I mostly use low odor acrylic spray paints in a well-ventilated room. If I spray a lot I actually wear a mask. The trick is to hold the stencil nice and firmly down – sometimes I use different brush ends to add extra fingers and hold down my stencil and then spray evenly and not too close. Always start spraying off the page to make sure the cap is not clocked or weird things are happening.
Here I used white with my Amsterdam Stencil on a background I had painted with acrylic paint- I love how the the white makes everything pop.

This time the song was Lightening Crashes by Live – a grunge classic you could say. And although it is a bit of a bummer, I chose some lyrics and went for powerful colors and a vibrant spread.
I used my Lily Wallpaper stencil – one I designed years ago now but still love so much. I used spray paint, acrylic paint, and a fude pen. I paired it with the coordinating design – the Lily Fan stamp from my Fan-tastic Large stamp set. Mixing the same motifs together in different forms creates some nice unity.
It’s a pretty intense background (“like a rollin’ thunder”?) so I toned it down some with gesso.
And the lyrics found their spot in the center of it all ;)

This week’s prompt was Back in Black by AC/DC – a real rock n roll standard. I thought I would sketch a bit of a dangerous looking girl and use a fiery color palette.
I used my Hamburg stencil for the background with acrylic paint and spray paint.
I sketched the girl using Art Graf Kneaded Graphite – a water soluble putty-like stuff that you can draw with and then reactivate with water. It’s an interesting material to work with that I’m digging right now.

This week’s prompt was Hotel California by The Eagles. I had fun playing with my Manhattan Stencil on a small gelli plate – using the plate to stamp into the art journal.
I sketched the figure over the background and then painted him partly in with Inktense Blocks- I love how the stenciled areas areas creating a pattern and texture for the clothes.

This week’s prompt was Beautiful – Christina Aguilera . The lyrics are awesome- as to the music…well by now you might have guessed I am a total grunge-rock-alternative kinda girl. LOL …but hey …I am in here ;)
I used my Broadway Stencil with some ink pens – I was in our new house waiting for a contractor and this was what I stuffed in my bag and thought “make the most of this, a journal, a 4×4 stencil and three pens” and there you go:
I actually plan on doing this more often – just pack a really limited amount of stuff and see what happens. It was really fun to do – easy but occupying and as you can tell since it was finished – the contractor was late. All in all better than a coloring book ;)
Is this only being done thru Instagram? I know alot of people don’t do Instagram including myself.
