The Stencilfied Journal – Prompt 6

My wonderful friend Tina Walker is at it again – she invited several people to join her Stencilfied Prompts. The prompts are music related and each week she is posting a song. You can be inspired by the lyrics, the video, the album cover or anything related and the only restriction is that you have to use StencilGirl Product Stencils. Here is my take on Prompt 6:

This week’s prompt was Alanis Morissette – Thank You. That one was tough – neither do I like the song- LOL- nor did the lyrics really do it for me- but I found a small part of the lyrics and I pulled them out :)

I used my Santa Fe Stencil on top of a really messed up background. I sprayed in white over the Stencil and I love how it made the otherwise already dull looking colors pop again.

I love how crisp the spray painted stencils sets off the textured grungy background.

Be Bad – Art Journal

Ha- lol – I am not sure if I like this or if I feel slightly pushed into a psychedelic 60s comic – but I sure had fun playing ;)

I loved mixing up a hand cut stencil, my hand carved rubber stamp and my new Groovy Foam Stamp. I used spray paint with the stencil, an ink pad for the rubber stamp and acrylic paint with the Groovy Stamp.

Once all was dried brushed on yellow acrylic ink over the whole spread – and there you go …you feel like you landed in a 60s Bugs Bunny comic LOL.

The Stencilfied Journal – Prompt 5

My wonderful friend Tina Walker is at it again – she invited several people to join her Stencilfied Prompts. The prompts are music related and each week she is posting a song. You can be inspired by the lyrics, the video, the album cover or anything related and the only restriction is that you have to use StencilGirl Product Stencils. Here is my take on Prompt 5:

This week’s prompt was Led Zeppelin’s Stairway to Heaven.

I added a bit to the lyrics ;) You know Led Kalbach – yeah stupid joke LOL

For this art journal spread I spray painted in grey over my Toledo Stencil and then layered the Beacon Stencil on top and sprayed with pink and beige as well as purple over it.

I love how the layered stencils come together. I tried it first with a lighter color as the background and then the dark color on top  but I realized that it was too hard for the eye to read the background pattern that way. Always fun to play around with stencils and see how far and different you can push them :)

Wish you a Rock ‘N Roll day !!!

The Stencilfied Journal – Prompt 4

My wonderful friend Tina Walker is at it again – she invited several people to join her Stencilfied Prompts. The prompts are music related and each week she is posting a song. You can be inspired by the lyrics, the video, the album cover or anything related and the only restriction is that you have to use StencilGirl Product Stencils. Here is my take on Prompt 4:

This week’s prompt was She Used to be Mine – Sara Bareilles – another song I am not really familiar with …I do have a very grungy, alternative music style- but it was fun to listen to the music and use part of them.

For this Spread I started by using my Mesa Verde Stencil on top of a partly painted background and spreading a thin layer of Heavy Gesso over the stencil. Using a palate knife makes sure you can apply the gesso pretty evenly.

After the gesso dried I layered my Granada Stencil on top and used spray paint to create a second layer – i love how the two stencils work together. I used the Millie Stamp from the Actually I Can Stamp Set on a piece of tissue paper and then added it to the background with Fluid Medium. This way I could make sure to still see the background shining through but was also able to add the stamping regardless of the texture.

Added the journaling and there it is. Here are some of the supplies I used:

Let’s Jump with the Creative Squad – Maura Hibbitts

Today we have Maura Hibbitts with us sharing a project that is sure to brighten up any home – a lovely little Kokopelli figure! Maura is using my Downtown, Mesa Verde, Toledo, and Crackle stencils and this month’s theme: Let’s Jump! – The Creative Squad is joining the fun of Creative JumpStart 2019 this month. They’re creating objects for the home, inspired by the CJS19 theme My Home is My Castle.

We are focusing on home decor this month to brighten our personal “castles”. My husband drew a Kokopelli design years ago, following one of our epic summer camping trips to the Southwest, and then cut a number of them out of wood. I decided to use one of these figures and alter it with paint and stencils. I chose Kokopelli for a couple of reasons – one, he carried his “home” on his back as he traveled between pueblos, and two, we grow a number of cacti and succulents that have to come inside our home each winter, and they remind me of Kokopelli.

I started my project by painting the wood with gesso, and once that dried, painting him turquoise, a color I associate with the southwest. (I love the turquoise jewelry from this region.)

I laid the Crackle stencil onto the figure and using a cosmetic sponge, lightly dabbed Ultramarine Blue all over the front and back and edges. The edges were tricky to do, I had to wrap the stencil along the edge, hold it with one hand and dab the paint. It might have been easier to tape it on, now that I think about it.

I wanted to use stencils with designs that remind me of the southwest, and Nathalie has several. I chose to use the Toledo stencil next, and mixed Titanium White and Cerulean Blue, then dabbed that on with the sponge.

Now that I have all of my blue layers on, it’s time to add the gold. I used the Mesa Verde stencil with Pale Gold.

Kokopelli needs a bit of contrast, and I chose to add copper and gold to his hair, flute and loincloth. I started by rubbing on the Copper Metallic paste with my finger, and then rubbed on some Quinacridone Gold to bring out the color, and decided to add a bit to the base too.

I went back in to add more design on the loincloth area with the pale gold and the Downtown stencil.

I decided to add a bit more contrast, and went back in with some embossing powder on the flute, hair and back area. When I did my final look at my project, I still felt like it needed a bit more definition, so took a small brush and edged the figure with Payne’s Grey.

Kokopelli is playing to the sun among the cacti in our front window. Listen for the song of his flute! – Maura

Thank you Maura! Loved hearing your personal connection to this little guy and seeing him transform into something with a lot of positive energy for the home :) You can find all my Stencils in my Online Shop. In addition to her wooden figure here are some of the supplies that Maura used:

The Stencilfied Journal – Prompt 1

Tina Walker is at it again – she invited several people to join her Stencilfied Prompts. The prompts are music related and each week she is posting a song. You can be inspired by the lyrics, the video, the album cover or anything related and the only restriction is that you have to use StencilGirl Product Stencils.

This week’s prompt was Queen’s Bohemian Rhapsody – such a great song! So many great memories – how about you, do you have special memories when you hear the song?

I decided to choose a Freddie Mercury quote and create an image of him on stage – he definitely wasn’t boring that is for sure :)

I used my Hamilton Stencil on the right with some acrylic paint and then added also added to some areas parts of my Van Vorst Stencil.

I painted Freddie with my new Liquitex Gouache colors which.

Here are some of the supplies I used besides regular acrylic paint:

If you play along and post on social media- use #thestencilfiedjournal so we all can find your work! That would be so much fun!

One of my favorite songs ever!
Reminds me of singing in the car with friends when I was a teenager and then again when my son was younger and he and his friends sang it with me. This song will live on forever since it’s just that good.

A New Adventure Begins – Art Journal

“…and so…a new adventure begins…”

I am excited for the new year …yes still LOL

I used a magazine image and painted over with my neopastels- I love doing that when I am a bit lazy painting my own image- and the neopastels are just soooo yummie ….

I used different stencils with acrylic paints and gesso to create the background – stippling paint through the stencil and taking paint off through the stencil as well.

Besides acrylic paints and gesso, here are the supplies I used:
