I designed this stencil because I love typewriters. When I grew up I had this gigantic old office typewriter from the 40s which I used to write my first novel on. The novel never made it to more then 11 pages, when it was replaced by a new idea- but anyway- I loved my typewriter. I am also one of those people that learned proper blind typewriting and I am quite quick and good at it – LOL. I bought a nice old one at a flea market and it must weigh a thousand pounds. There is a lot I connect with typewriters: vintage, office, notes, letters, work, messages….

Here is what I created for today:

It is a crazy art journal page ;) I do love to use random pages in my art journal and scrape off leftover paint, try out on an small area a little technique and often times I get this huge dimension and depth in a background which is ready to finish. I used the typewriter Stencil with some acrylic paint that stenciled through onto some marbleized paper.

I cut out the typewriter – added a slid through which I put a piece of canvas with with a “note to myself” tag and then mounted it on small 3D Foam Pads. The journaling reads “Seriously don’t take others or yourself too serious!”

I also love using the typing keys of the typewriter by itself for mark making -and you can see I did it throughout the spread but also around the pages as a frame.

Oh, what a lovely stencil! I am a secretary and also learned how to type at home on such an old mechanical one. It was painful for my smallest finger, because sometimes it slipped between two keys. Nice, colourfull artwork. Greetings, Cindy

you just keep getting better and better. i love all your stencils but i have to say that this has to be one of my favorites, i have always loved old typewriters and you did just an awesome job making a stencil out of this one. i will go to all the other blogs cause i love seeing what they did with it and get to meet new artists that i might not have ever found besides thru you. remember we met at CHA last year?? i sure am hoping that you are coming again in january. would love to see you and of course give you a hug. thanks for doing these blog giveaways, i cant afford to buy much living on disability so it is uber cool to have so many chances to win. you are the best! much love. xoxo

Elephant March or…New Stencil with StencilGirl Products

So excited about my new 9×121 inch stencil called Elephant March that I designed for StencilGirl Products (and yes- the art journal page is called elephant waltz ;) )

I do love elephants and I had such a blast creating this stencil. I also wanted the pattern of the elephant blanket to be possibly used just as is – so it is like a two in one stencil.

You can also get a peak at another stencil I just released in the background ;) but more about it later.

Sketch Show

Hamburg

Still sketching along. I love it – I am not about to sketch faces..not my thing (yet- LOL- who knows ;) -but I do love to sketch things that I have seen many times. It is amazing how many things you discover when you look closer because you want to sketch them. For example I didn’t realize that I could see the roof of the convention center from our roof terrace, or how green our city really is or …

I cannot wait to also explore my new home next month through sketching. It is fun- try it!

Hamburg*End(Si)e or…my very first exhibition

Exhibition Hamburg Mixed Media Painting

So last friday was the day of my first exhibition. If you are a regular reader of my blog and newsletter you know ow long it took me to do this and how scared and excited I was about the whole thing :) For the first time showing a bigger amount of my art work to friends and other people who have nothing to do with Mixed Media usually. Also most of my friends never really saw or got what I am doing anyway – not that they are not interested – they just couldn’t grasp the concept ;)

Let me say right away – IT WAS AWESOME! – so you are done reading, if that is all you want to know – LOL – for the rest…let’s get into the details why it was one really cool experience!

1. Creating Process

Once I had the theme of the Exhibition in my head – a mixture between all Hamburg-Related things -mixed with a good bye twist – I had ideas for more canvases to create. I spent many days from early morning till late night in my studio painting and it was awesome. I loved working with my favorite techniques – and as I said many times before- if you master the technique it is quite easy to just let creativity flow.

My obstacles were of other nature …painting on canvases that are bigger than my usual surfaces…

and I tackled that too and I loved it. I want to do more of those!

I am ready for it ;)

2. Preparing the Exhibition

It was pretty amazing how much work even in such a small exhibition goes – I never really thought about it…see it is all a learning process for me. Gathering the artwork which I thought would fit best for the rooms and theme…

planning out in which rooms which art work can hang …trying to take into account space, wall size, windows and light – I didn’t do the best job on the light in one room as at a certain point the light was glaring on the pictures distracting the view a bit- but oh well…that is why you do your first exhibition in a small and familiar place then ;)

The hardest while preparing…coming up with names and …prices…the never ending discussion for an artist how to price your work. I was told I priced it to low by all of the people at the exhibition…I also talked a long time at the exhibition to a friend who is working at the Art Academy here in Hamburg and she stated that in her experience it is mostly the women that have a problem pricing their art work, while the guys just do it. She has seen rows and rows of art students and it is always the same issue. Interesting…why is that? Well…I guess I fulfill the norm here ;)

Transporting and packing the artwork…some are super easy, some are causing problems because of fragility. I also learned that huge canvases do not fit in a smart car…and I also learned that carrying a huge canvases for half an hour in about 90 Fahrenheit (32 C) is quite straining…Note to myself: ASK friends for help next time ;) On the other hand – carrying canvases around in a bag and having strangers ask you if they can take a look to hear them saying “Oh that is so cool, where did you buy that?” is also pretty fun…

Hanging the work…it is good if you have a friend who is 6.76 feet tall (2.06m) – you do not need a ladder and hanging stuff is a breeze ;)

3. The Exhibition

It was the hottest day ever and the last day of the school vacation – so only 1/3 of the people we invited came – it was small but yet wonderful . Sorry for not many pictures of the exhibition and people itself – I was way to busy and excited to take any…

It was special to show my work and the coolest part was hearing what others thought of my work, what they saw, what they liked (very different tastes- so fun to notice that once again ;) )

I loved when they discovered the tiniest details, asked questions and told me what they thought or felt seeing a certain canvas.

And after a while I started relaxing too and joining the party that formed on the balcony later that evening when it got a bit cooler outside when the sun started to go down

and we even got a nice firework to see to top off the exhibition :) What a great way to say an early good bye to Hamburg -even though we won’t move for another five weeks ;)

4. Conclusion

It was awesome. It was special for me and I am sure I will always remember this first intimate moment showcasing my work life. I had the feeling people liked my work and I even sold five canvases. I am stoked to know that four of them will be hanging in three different law offices throughout Hamburg (St. Pauli, Eimsbüttel and Altona). I am so giddy about it -I wanna go to all of them and look at them there- LOL. I would absolutely do it again and I hope there will be a chance to do so in my new home one day too :)

5. Thank You

Thanks to Klingner & Kollegen who invited me and made it possible to exhibit my work, to Liquitex for the support with their awesome paint media, to my wonderful readers that kept me going with my first exhibition, my awesome husband without whom this whole art adventure would have never started, my friend Julie Fei-Fan Balzer for her pushing and brain picking sessions and to all those that came to the exhibition on a very hot and murky day and who made me a really happy trooper. Thanks to A. to whom I sold my first two canvases – wow- that was so cool! Thank you!

When I was thinking about my stencil designs – I thought about the stencils that I would love to own – and the Crackle stencil idea has been in my head forever! I wanted the closest possible pattern to real crackle effects and also in smaller sized cracks or bigger ones- so that is why there the stencil is 9×12 inch – which gives you lots of options.

Here is what I created for today:

I created these three canvases for the hallway of the place where my exhibition took place last week. The writing is from a German song by Hildegard Knef and it could be translated into:

“I need a change of scenery”, said the birch tree and set off at the crack of dawn

I used the Crackle stencil throughout those canvases in it’s most simple use – with some Liquitex Modeling Paste spread over.

I love the simple texture effect you can archive with it. I had used my What’s The Point Stencil underneath with some heavy gesso directly on the canvas, then spray painted with Liquitex Professional Spraypaint, added the texture with the Crackle Stencil and applied a birch tree panel, some moss and a sprayed tree branch to the canvases.

Photo Booth Wall Art or …Blog Response

If you are a reader of my friend’s Julie Fei-Fan Balzer you probably saw her fun post about what she did with those photo booth strips that she and I took during her visit here in Hamburg. I totally love what she did with them – and I cannot wait to see it in person. At the end of her post she asks “What have you done to display your photo booth strips?” – and here comes my Blog Response :)

A couple of years – many years ago – my husband and I took a photo strip at a booth in San Francisco. It was one of our first really big trips together and I totally love this little photo strip. I went to a professional photography studio and asked if they could print it on a very large and long canvas. The photo strip itself on the canvas is now 4.5×24 inches- just to give you a reference – here is a pic of me sticking my finger out- so you have a reference ;)

At first the photoplace wasn’t weren’t sure it would work because of the resolution of the photo booth strip (my photos here are actually a bit blurry but the print itself is not) and because it is so much smaller than I then actually wanted it to be printed – but it worked – And I love love love it. It wasn’t cheap as I remember – I am sure you can get it cheaper nowadays – even just scan it in at a very good resolution, maybe play a bit in photoshop and then upload it to any of those services that do print photos on canvases. It is a great memory :)

Maybe I should have the Julie and Nat photo strips printed on canvas for my new studio :)

Stroll Through The Hood

Disclaimer: This post makes a bit fun of “The Lions of Michigan” – if you are a Lion of Michigan and weren’t in this crowd – I am sorry, I do not mean to make fun of all Lions of Michigan, nor all Lions nor the Lions Club nor all people of Michigan! If you are on that photo…sorry- if you hadn’t shouted out so loud..I would have not even noticed you in the crowd- you were almost invisible! ;)

A lot of times I get asked what inspires me. And one of my key answers is always “a stroll through the hood”. It might be street art, it might be thoughts or feelings connected with certain sights, it might be stuff I find to buy…in one way or the other you might find the photos, the thoughts, the feelings, the colors or anything from those strolls in my art journal, a mixed media project or a scrapbooking layout.

I would love to show you once a month what inspired me while strolling through my neighborhood. I hope you like the little insights into my daily life where I live (at the moment Hamburg, Germany). This is also a wonderful way for me to remind myself on the inspiring things in the hood. Maybe you get inspired by those posts and even invite ME to a stroll in YOUR hood – feel free to grab the logo and leave a comment for me on the post and share!

You gotta love a neighbor hood where an artist works on the street – this guy is working on a canvas and is a friend of the hair dresser – the canvas will be hanging there soon. I hope I will see it finished. It is pretty cool!

Our Central Park- LOL – it is a piece of land …prominent right smack at best building location – which is now for several years rented out for a “beach-club” – yup right…in the middle of the city, at the train tracks going above you have a piece of beach with nice chairs and you can hang out there if you want. Totally forgot to take Julie for a break there…oh well…we did so much ;)

The usual saturday flea market from a different angle – it was so hot that day and soo crowded. But fun. Apparently this flea market made it to some travel guides for Hamburg

The Lions of Michigan…we did almost not know they were here…almost ;) ROAAARRRR

One Saturday morning I met my friend Sandra for a breakfast at one of the many portuguese cafe’s in this particular street. It is even called Galao (portuguese expresso with hot foamed milk) Strip . Great place for people watching and catching up before heading out to do the weekend grocery shopping.

Well…gotta say I love Hamburg ;) Only one more Stroll from the hood is going to be from Hamburg. I think I might continue though once I moved to Jersey City- might be a good way to keep me going checking out my new hood. What do you think?

Wasserturm or…today is the day

Today is the day of my exhibition – hahaha- you are probably as excited as I am just because you cannot hear the word anymore ;) Well – bah…don’t be too happy I will still post about it ;)
So this is the last canvas in a trilogy I created – I showed you the other two before here and here. The water tower is a very prominent landmark of my hood. It is set in a park and I can see it from our deck and our sleeping room window. I love this old building. They turned it into a 5Star hotel – which caused lot’s of protests …building wise I have to say though they did a really good job inside keeping lot of the old architecture. Otherwise it would have been awesome if this was turned into public space since it is in a public park…but Oh well ;)

I designed the Circuit Stencil because I do love technical signs in my work -I love when something is whimsy and then you can put some straight technical background to it. I also wanted to have a stencil which you can use as a background stencil but also to frame your work.

Here is what I created for today:

It is a very simple yet colorful sparkling art journaling page :) I used Wendy Vecchi’s Golden Embossing Paste over the Stencil- simply scrape it over with an old credit card or hotel key card.

I let it dry and then used three different colors of Dylusion Sprays over it.

At some areas I dabbed the color off while still wet – so it got sparkly gold again, at some areas I just let the color sit and dry on top of the circuit pattern.

Next I used a water mister and laid out the Circuit Stencil over areas that weren’t covered yet with the pattern, spritzed over the stencil and used a rag to rub through the stencil. As the Dylusions get reactivated by water, you take off some of the colors and get a little Circuit Ghost Effect :)

Voila- a nice background that you can add photos, journaling, stamping etc. I simply used a little quote I liked, by Pablo Picasso – I love filling my art journal with quotes.

Since I am taking a class with Wendy Vecchi this weekend, I was especially interested in your use of her embossing paste and your oh-so-brilliant stencil! They work so well together to create both texture and interest! Love the result, Nat! Bravo!
