Need some ides? I’ve got Rubber Stamp sets like fan-fav Embroidery that includes a nice mix of stitch-inspired stamps. And of course my Stroll Through the Hood stamp sets – based on buildings and just fun little streetscape elements that I love.
Artwork is included in the sale – both giclee prints like my This Too Shall Pass and original paintings like Tacheles. Artwork is a pretty special gift imo.
So you get the idea – everything is included in this sale except gift certificates. Come, see, shop, and enjoy some special items that have been lovingly designed and created by an artist. Thank you so much for looking!
Looking for something solid? Like a nice solid shape that you can depend on? How about some solid stamps like my Solid Square, Solid Triangle, or Solid Hex! Haha I’m just joking around but they are pretty nifty stamps to play with.
Mix them up and layer them. They are building blocks for something bigger.
They can be a base for additional stamping with shape and pattern and in fact they can even be used to “kiss” other stamps before they go on the page. Check out that simple process here and enjoy the results:
Pattern and texture are two elements of artwork that always catch my attention. If you know me, I am pretty big on using both in my own work too. I think they add so much – movement, complexity, and that little something that makes you want to look more closely. They invite the viewer in and hey, that’s a good thing.
One way I add pattern and texture is through stencils and a favorite is my Signals stencil. It is definitely abstract and a little bit random too. The pattern was inspired by a vintage German roller stamp and it is just the thing for instant mark-making.
When I want pattern in a background of an art journal page to balance with some heavy duty journaling, Signals really works. I think it’s so successful because of its smaller scale and also it’s not super perfect with harsh edges. It isn’t geometric – it has a hand drawn feel to it that is very human.
Here my Creative Squad team member Robin uses it in muted tones over book pages for a quiet background that still has interest.
Besides backgrounds, Signals was my solution in this art journal page to give my building a little visual texture. Is it masonry showing through the mural or maybe just a little gritty urban texture? You can decide :) I think it works.
Signals plays nicely with other stencils too for layering, probably because it is more about texture and marks. Here it’s layered with my Space Age Modern stencil in pink and orange Distress Ink for a more complex look. Kinda gives an agitated vibe to the art journal page and fits the pose of the figure.
If you need a bold pattern though, Signals can work in that way too. I love layering it in black over bright colors. It has serious energy here.
Or do the opposite like my Creative Squad team member Maura does here – use the Signals stencil in bold colors over a black acrylic background. I love it!
Hope you enjoyed seeing how you can use the Signals stencil to add pattern, texture, and interesting details to your mixed media artwork. Give it a try! Here are some of the supplies used in these examples:
The Triple Play foam stamp set was designed by myself, Marsha Valk and Birgit Koopsen – three artists coming together to make a 7 piece stamp set. Yup – 7 different stamps make up this nifty set. Originally we designed it to go with our Beyond the Paper online workshop (all about working on mixed media surfaces other than paper) but it turns out this set looks pretty fab on paper too.
We each designed two of the six different triangle stamps and then included the hex stamp too. I bet you can pick out my two designs but I’ll let you guess on the others ;)
As someone who loves playing with patterns, I reach for this set all the time. The triangles work together in so many ways and whether you stick with just one design or begin combining several, it’s a great way to build a background.
They almost make a kaleidoscope like effect and when you start stamping and rotating and stamping some more, cool things begin to happen with those shapes.
The triangle shape can disappear and the pattern becomes whole in the background, something new.
The geometry of Triple Play creates the versatility. And we kinda knew that going into the creation of it.
We also knew that we wanted a very adaptable and useful set. Each of us was to use it in our lessons in the Beyond the Paper workshop, so it had to be interesting enough to show it in action in a lot of different ways.
Once we started playing, it totally exceeded our expectation though – when you start playing with those patterns it is almost addicting LOL
We realized that the Triple Play set could be very bold or also used in very sensitive and beautiful ways.
It all depends on what mood you are going for in your piece. But in the end, you will have a lot of fun creating with them no matter what you do. Here is a link to learn more. Enjoy!
I’m running a big blowout sale on some of my products and you can save 50% off! Starting today, just use the coupon code nowsave50 at checkout to save on my CJS22 Limited Edition LOVE Foam Stamp and all of my Mini Cardboard Model kits. This offer will be good as long as supplies last :)
Here is what’s on sale:
The cardboard kits are a blast to make and paint on a rainy day. We did have the Creative Squad play with those one month and look at some of the results:
They would also be a great gift idea for a young or young at heart creative in your life ;)
And then the iconic LOVE stamp. Don’t we all need some more of this in the world?
My neighborhood is a constant source of inspiration for me (have you seen my Stroll Through the Hood posts?) and that was just the case when I designed the Central Ave foam stamps. I was out and about looking at all kinds of drainage grates, manhole covers, and iron fences. I was getting inspo from all the municipal patterns out there that often we just overlook. Lots of them, especially the old intricate ones, are very ornamental and beautiful. Central Ave isn’t beautiful per say, but I love the intricate geometry of it and its urban and gritty vibe.
Central Ave is a two piece foam stamp set – a positive and negative of the same design. If you’re really fussy, you can line them up and play off that. I personally love using them together in an art journal page – doubling up on the design in my compositions – but not necessarily lining them up.
In the above art journal spread I stamped them onto the patterned inside of a junk mail envelope, as well as stamping them directly in the background. The junk mail pieces were nice to cut up into different sizes, repeating the circle shape but adding variety to the composition too.
Patterns are another way to go with the Central Ave foam stamp set. You can watch me make this pattern HERE for the April ArtFoamies Challenge back in 2021. This would be an excellent background for an art journal page or maybe an idea for a fabric project…
Even as a delicate addition to a page, the Central Ave pattern works nicely. It was just the fine linear detail that I needed to finish off this art journal page.
My Creative Squad is no stranger to the magic of Central Ave either. Here Robin finishes off a sweet nocturnal cityscape with the stamp in a deep shimmery blue. It reminds me of how lights flare and radiate through the darkness.
And Creative Squad alum Josefine keeps it clean and simple in this art journal page, highlighting the Central Ave foam stamps. I love the complimentary colors in this page and how the center of the flower also uses the center of the stamp.
