Perfect is the enemy of Great …something to keep in mind when you are struggling to get something just right. Maybe it doesn’t need to be perfect…
My background was a bit of a struggle on this one. I had added leftover acrylic paint from another project to my art journal since I do not like wasting paint and in the process the background just became a bit wild and dull. In order to push the background back – well where it belongs :) I then added my Art Deco Summit stencil and that began to bring it together. Next I stamped one of my Mini Motifs stamps with the white side of a Moonlight Duo pad – it fits nicely in the stencil pattern – and then one of my Fan-Fare stamps. I finished off the pattern with some new Posca markers I am loving – you can see the link for those below.
It’s a pretty wild background! I added gesso in the quote area and finished it off with a signo and fude pen.
I hope you had a chance to tune into my Instagram Thursday and Friday for a takeover from the super talented printmaker, book artist, and artfoamies designer Sarah Matthews!
When Sarah and I talked about the process and got to know each other we decided we would want to challenge each other by sending each other a background which then the receiving artist would finish up – A real Collaboration …passing the brush so to speak. Here is what Sarah sent me!
I loved it right away – in one of our conversations I had mentioned that I had a garden and some lettuce and she thought of her carved lettuce stamp.
I love the background and cool layering – It was sooo precious- But then I got to work.
I felt I needed to add just a little bit more and thought the intersections of the lettuces make a fun triangle area …and well …a garden has flowers…sometimes …if you do not forget to water them ;)
so I used the Tulip Triangle from my Triangle Love Set and added this to the print.
And then I felt I would really not want to cover it more as I wanted to keep Sarah’s background alive and so I went for a final addition of adding some text.
I pulled out my woodblocks and some Speedball inks and added this …
I am quite in love with our collaborative piece. And if you want to see her take on my background -she will share it with a video on Monday. I do hope we get to make more art together in the future and as I said Lettuce build a better tomorrow.
I hope you tune into my Instagram today and tomorrow for a takeover from the super talented printmaker, book artist, and artfoamies designer Sarah Matthews!
Then tomorrow at 12noon EST Sarah and I are having a live chat on Instagram.

Hello from my Creative Squad! Today we have Maura Hibbitts sharing with us an art journal spread that makes me want to go to the beach RIGHT NOW :) Maura is using my Far Out, Batik 1, Batik 2, and Fairview Fan foam stamps along with this month’s theme: Under the Sea – There is something so fascinating about water. We love being in it, floating on it, relaxing next to it, and it remains one of the last frontiers here on the planet. Create something that is an ode to the sea.
I love the sea! I look forward to journeys to the ocean, and the time to sit on the beach and just contemplate, listening to the sound of the waves ebb and flow. I am always curious about what life is like in the ocean for the amazing creatures who call it home. What is under the sea, in the deep depths? And yes, my imagination runs to the likes of 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea by Jules Verne, the lost city of Atlantis, giant Kraken…to me the mysteries of the sea are definitely waiting.
I headed to my large Dylusions art journal, and swiped on paint across the pages, from purple to blues to green, working my way up from darker to lighter. I blended a bit between color layers, trying to recreate ocean layers from the depths to the surface.
I am using the Far Out stamp and black paint to add some texture to the deep waters. I like to use a gel plate to stamp off of when I am using paint. I can push the stamp onto the paint, or apply it directly with the brayer.
I decided to stamp a bit around the edges with the Batik 1 stamp and black ink.
Now it is time to create the waves in the upper waters. I started with the swirl on Batik 2, and using the Cobalt Teal, I made a series of swirls across the top of the pages. Then, I mixed some teal with the purple, and used the lower part of the stamp to add a bit of a wave pattern in the darker area. I feel like this gives the water a feel of flow.
I used the Fairview Fan stamp to continue with my wave theme. I mixed some white and purple to get this gorgeous lavender, and stamped this under the teal swirls. I stamped two rows horizontally, then did a row with the Cyan.
I mixed a bit of Cyan with water, and splattered some drops on the pages with a brush. Once that dried, I flicked a mix of Peacock Pearl (metallic paint) across the pages. I think they look like bubbles rising.
I edged the pages with washi tape to finish it off.
For the final step, I hand lettered a quote about the ocean with a paint pen.
When you are next at the ocean, will you just look out at the waves and the horizon, or will you stop and wonder at what is under the surface?
I know I will continue to be amazed at the diversity and complexity of ocean life and the many moods of the seas. I have a feeling, there is still so much of the deep ocean we have yet to discover, and maybe, just maybe, the ocean should be allowed to hold on to some of that mystery. Let’s continue to protect our oceans and the wonderful life it holds. – Maura
Thank you Maura! I love how you used the different stamps to capture the motion and beauty of the sea :)

There are over 70 videos to binge watch and enjoy in celebration of Mary Beth’s Birthday – how fun is that?
A Look Back – This time I’m looking at drawing inspiration from that universal emotion – Love. I like to use quotes for my art journaling because hey, sometimes a powerful quote exactly captures what I am feeling. Love is something that inspires me again and again and if you happen to look for quotes, you will see that there are plenty to choose from. I thought sharing some of my art journal pages through the years would be fun here.
A Look Back is a blog series to show you some projects and posts that you may have missed – sometimes going WAY back in the archive. I think it will be fun to revisit a few ideas that we haven’t seen for a while. I’m excited to see how a little look back might inspire something new in the future :)
“I have loved the stars too fondly to be fearful of the night.” – Sarah Williams
In 2014 I created this page using my Crackle stencil and spray paint.
“Courage, like love, circles back around and finds us again. Love, like courage, only blooms when there exists so many reasons to be afraid.” – Tyler Knott Gregson
In this bold spread from Valentine’s Day in 2018 I used some transfers of a photo of my great-aunt Margot and my great-uncle Hans, along with my Love Tag, Tread, and Grannies rubber stamps.
So excited and honored to be participating in “Pass the Brush” here on my blog and on Instagram too!
“Pass the Brush” is the artistic community’s version of “Share the Mic.” The objective of this event is to show solidarity within the mixed media community and to amplify black mixed media artists so their voices can be heard and art can be seen in a broader audience.
