Wunder…or Art for Myself

Banner

Siri Skoog, Märta Ruus, Camillha Wäfors Fahlberg and Cecilia Ekström, have started an inspiration blog with great prompts for your Art Journal called Art for Myself. They introduce a new theme each month during 2013. The topics are about yourself, such as my thoughts on 2013, my family and my home, this is me, things that make me happy and so on. I am thrilled they invited me to play along as a guest inspirer this month on the theme “What makes me happy”

NathalieKalbach_Wunder01

Wunder gibt es immer wieder – is a song which literally translated means: There will always be miracles
When I read the theme I thought of this song. So after creating the background- layering different colors and stencils I started the journaling which reads:
What makes me happy? That’s a good question…The every day wonders is the answer I would say. Like waking up with my husband and starting the day with a laugh and good breakfast, the cat acting like a 2 month old kitten, my work, colors and paints on my projects and my hands. My friends who love me as I am – their emails or small messages during the day. My family – always there- no matter what. Traveling but also home sweet home – the amazing world we live in – music, art, movies, literature – pretty much makes me happy. And the best
Wunder gibt es immer wieder.
So even when live throws you lemons, the next wonder to make you happy is waiting.

NathalieKalbach_Wunder02

such a fun concept and if you need inspirations or prompts for art journaling- you gotta hop on over to the blog- it is wonderful!

What makes you happy?

hugs

    Normal is a relative term.
    So is happiness.

At the moment some of my happy triggers are smells like roses, garlic, sandalwood, hot fresh coffee, early morning fog, and apple juice. Since I’m pretty much house bound it’s the little things that “spice” up my day.

The bigger happy things are the relative good health of my family so we can laugh together. At the moment I can sleep through the night (instead of not sleep at all, or sleep all the time). For the next little bit there are two professional bicycle races being broadcast on t.v. and one of them is super exciting. And I’ve just started up with a round robin journal exchange which give me fear as well as happiness (I love these and this one is international).

Small things of beauty in nature makes me happy. This morning, the spider webs with dew drops made me happy and I had to get my camera and take pictures of them. There were lots and lots everywhere.

Stunning art work! Thanks for sharing.

Fragmented II or Hamburg*End(si)e Canvas

This is my favorite canvas that I created for the exhibition. Actually not only for the exhibition. I created it already with a place to hang it in my mind in our new home in Jersey City. It is a wall that is in the middle of our dining and living room – there is a little fireplace in the wall. So the plan is to hang this canvas on one side and make another one the same size  70x80cm (27.5×31.5 inches) – or the other side of the wall but with a Jersey City or NYC theme- have to see ;). mmmh- now I wonder if that is a size I can get in the States- better inquire – LOL .

NathalieKalbach_HHMax01

Again symbols, landmarks and typical Hamburg-related things on this canvas.

NathalieKalbach_HHMax02

I painted with Liquitex Heavy Body Acrylic Paints, Markers and Spray Paints.

NathalieKalbach_HHMax03

After this canvas I am almost striving to do even bigger canvases…but then there is the question, where to hang it – LOL.

Have a colorful day today :)

I Love St. Pauli or…Nachtschattengewächse

2013
Acrylic paint, marker 16×18″ – SOLD

Only four more days till my exhibition…I am “slightly” totally utterly super duper excited ! And yes… I am also “peeing” (sorry!) my pants – no kidding ;)

NathalieKalbach_Nachtschattengewächse03

By now I should have decided which title this canvas- which is 20″x 24″ (60x50cm) has –  Naming the canvases is sometimes easy sometimes it is like Canvas 1, 2 , 3 …which is so boring – LOL. And did you notice….I said I SHOULD have decided ….

NathalieKalbach_Nachtschattengewächse02

Thursday we will hang the pictures – I already planned out which canvases go together and in which rooms they will hang- and put the name tags on the side of them (again…Nat…you have to decide the names by Thursday!!!) and then we will see ;)

What would you call this canvas? If you are German…German is good- LOL- go ahead ;)

Have a gorgeous day

Cranes or…Hamburg*End(si)e Canvas

NatKalbach_Kraene01

Another Canvas for my exhibition- which is going to be part of a small series of three and belongs to this canvas I showed already. I find the Hamburg Harbor very interesting – I love the cranes, the big container ships, the containers. Hamburg is actually called “Tor zur Welt” too, which means “Gate to the World” – a second name of Hamburg which apparently has been mentioned in 1888 already (I didn’t know – LOL). I have to say the harbor has  indeed this little taste of a gate to the world. BTW – if you are ever in Hamburg as a tourist…do not go to the harbour on the weekend – it is unbearably full there in the summer…the best time is in the middle of the week at 10 am – and then take a boats tour – beautiful!

NatKalbach_Kraene02

Off to work on the third canvas in this series.

What second name is there or would you give your home town/city?

Have a gorgeous day

In our valley there is a master-planned community (Valencia, CA) that ran an ad campaign calling themselves “Awesometown.” We refer to the valley as a whole as “The Bubble”–very clean, unadulterated, piped-in music, low crime–niceties, but I think it lends to a shocking reality when the kids grow up here and then head into the world.

My quiet, beachside hometown of Pacifica, CA was referred to as Pathetica by the sulking, brooding teens. Lol!

Charleston (SC) is known as The Holy City mainly because of the many old churches, which are really visible on the skyline. It is a very pretty and old city and one you would like, Nat. Downtown Charleston is full of old buildings and houses with beautiful gardens, streets lines with palmetto trees and even a few cobblestone streets. I could see canvas inspiration for you in Charleston!

My memories from Hamburg is huge parcs/places with small lakes, where people walked their dogs.

Deserted Island Question or…Nat’s Emergency Art Kit

NatKalbachEmergencyArtKit

Have you ever been asked what art supplies you would bring to a deserted island? I always had fun answering this question – of course in a light hearted way *yeah-easy-duh!*. But now…although I am not really going to a deserted island, I actually have to give this question some serious thoughts. In less than nine weeks I will move to the U.S. which means that my art supplies and my whole studio will be in a sea container from 4 to maybe even 8 weeks. I will also not be able to ship certain supplies like my beloved Liquitex Spray Cans, Alcohol Inks, certain adhesives, oil paints etc. which means I will have some serious expenses on art supplies once over the pond. So in a way I am going to a deserted island and I pretty early came up with the thought to put together an emergency art kit to ship ahead of time to the States, to keep me able to work and the costs low in the beginning.

NatKalbachEAK01

As you can see I was going back and forth a bit on my list. For example I decided against taking embossing powders or an embossing ink pad because my heating gun won’t come with me to the States (220V) and I have to buy a new one there- so that can wait a couple weeks. The first item is my art journal- so the surface question is answered right away ;)  I picked a shoe box and a 12×12 flat box to put all supplies safely in, which also makes it safe to ship with some of our other emergency items we need in the first days (some kitchen stuff, towels etc.).

NatKalbachEAK02

I packed some of my favorite Liquitex Heavy Body Paints and then also some of my Ranger Distress Paints-. They are so different that it made sense to pack two different kinds of acrylic paints and they do not take that much space. I packed actually 4 Dylusion Ink Sprays – it was hard to decide on the colors . All these supplies are perfect to use on their own for backgrounds, with stencils, or with each other. The Gesso bottle was actually an extra. I had Gesso along with Gel Medium, Cosmetic Sponges, Liquitex Spraypaints and the Heating Gun on my list to buy in the States, but since this bottle is brand new and still sealed I decided it makes just sense to bring it and safe on that bit of money. Plus remember – Gesso is my Dumbledore ;)

NatKalbachEAK03

I then also packed a Gelli Plate- actually it is a cut piece of a Gelli plate – so just a small piece in order to be able to do some fun things with stencils and perfect also to use with the Ranger Distress Paints. As I always love to incorporate text and lines and love to use alpha stickers for titles, I decided to pack a small text background stamp, a stamp with wavey lines and my wooden alpha stamp set – which gives me more freedom when a couple packs of alphas where I will be missing the most important letters pretty soon. Going along with it, my Archival Ink Pad- of course re-inked. You see my three favorite Distress Inks with a Blending Tool – I love to use it to give depth and it is also perfect for stencils. Then a black journaling pen, my favorite foil writer, a white Signo Pen and a Water Mister -as you can use it with so many techniques for with the Acrylic Paints, the Distress Inks and the Dylusion Sprays in the kit. Furthermore you see in the picture my two favorite scissors – the bee cutter for finer cutting and the Tonic Scissors for heavy duty stuff.

NatKalbachEAK04

I also packed some of my favorite Paint Markers – as I use them for so many different techniques in my work nowadays and they really do not take that much space.

NatKalbachEAK05

I packed a brayer- I love using a brayer for many different background techniques, with the Gelli Plate and even to smooth out adhesive – so that was a given thing to pack. The Paper Cutter wasn’t actually super necessary but I am a klutz when it comes to cutting straight lines with a craft knife – so I am sure I will be pretty happy to find it in my kit later ;) I also packed a craft mat. Also some brushes – different ones and a palette knife -not a necessity but it really wanted to come with me because I love using this one ;) I also threw in a roll of Crafty Power Tape (not in the picture) – as this is my favorite adhesive for mixed media stuff.

NatKalbachEAK06

And at last stencils- and I decided to just pack my six stencil designs and a set of alpha stencils. As I am a stencil junky it was hard to leave the others behind for now but I am also looking forward to work on new fun projects with my own stencils.

And here is the whole list of what I take in my emergency art kit:

nSupplies

I hope this will cover me till the container arrives  plus it is going to be fun to be so restricted on supplies :)

What would you take with you ?

Suggestion? How about a preprepared travel journal? Something for the last few days before you leave, during the flight, and a few days after you arrive. Sort of transition journal?

My travel kit and “couch” kit work together. A flat pencil pouch with clear pocket and two zippered compartments. In the unseen part I have a tiny cutting mat, a folded paper towel and piece of waxed paper (“craft sheet”), and a tape runner. In the compartment that can be seen there is a cutting knife, Fiskers spring scissors, a black ball point pen, a .5 black Micron pen, a mechanical pencil, 6″ of a clear plastic ruler, a small Uhu glue stick. In a 4x6x2″ tupperware I have a small pan water color set, several cut down brushes, a wonderful small water container that folds flat, a mini mister, 5 pieces of water color paper cut to fit, several kleenexes (work better than paper towels for water color), and a spare tape runner. Since I mostly do collage I have an index card box with labeled dividers with all sorts of papers in a range of solid colors and patterns. If I can fit it in I take a 1″ black or brown ink pad and several small clear stamps.

As you can guess I’ve been doing this for awhile!

For plane travel I take another pencil pouch (on the plane–the rest goes in luggage) with a small selection of pens (jelly, permanent, ball point), mechanical pencil, tape runner, a few travel theme papers, water color paper cut to fit. Nothing sharp, pointy, toxic or wet. All my other papers are from travel brochures, airline magazines, tourist flyers, street finds, receipts, ticket stubs, etc. I have not been on a single trip domestic or international that I couldn’t find free collage supplies that documented my trip or whim. Paper are torn not cut. And I do pre-prepare a journal with backgrounds. On my last trip I was totally jammed for time so I did some quick gelli prints on tags, and took my Polaroid 300 camera to supplement found papers.

    Ta-dah!

I had to do the exact same thing 6 weeks back. I actually put off the decision for a month till I absolutely had to pack or I would have been totes nekkid. I packed white SC mist because it’s the shiznit and 5 colors Dylusions because they can be watered down for softer colors. I left the spray cans. I’m not happy to hear they won’t even ship by sea. Will have to have them brought by husband in car along with our furniture. Hmmmm. My list looks the same except I packed all my 6×6 stencils ’cause I wasn’t sure I could find them easily in SLC. And I brought all my water color pencils, my Silhouette Cameo and lots of Thickers. My bag had more crafty stuff than clothes! i had to leave my crazy huge stash of Hambly transparencies since they freaking weigh a ton. That hurt. I wait to see you in NY in the fall! Michelle- ok…so reading your answer …and then my heart stopped at “had to leave my hambly transparencies” – WAHHHHH. I hope you get those with the spray cans in the car! The restrictions are pretty high because of customs – and you have to avoid dangerous goods. For example we have to super duper clean our city bicycles – because they want absolutely no dirt on them which could contaminate. Of course no food, but then also restrictions on the spra ycan. I cannot bring my resin or stuff like this- pretty sad :(

Most supplies will be easier and cheaper to get and I don’t have to pay for customs – I am sure you know how bad that is. How does it go for you – are you paying a lot extra? – Nat

I also would bring my liquid adhesive and a small ziploc bag of scrap papers that I really love (great patterns that I could not get rid of). Best wishes on the move and I love that you will have your kit with you as you travel. Imagine how much fun it will be to set up your studio once you get settled.

I have absolutely no clue what I would pack. I dabble in so many forms of crafting (mainly cards and 3D mini album projects) so I would have to make some serious choices. Or I could just decide to take mixed media supplies and use your list ;)

I have moved many times but not to a different country like you… I would suggest ziplock baggies for all liquids as one leak would make a big mess/possibly ruin things… But if contained in a baggie it would be a minor issue.

Defragmented or…Hamburg*End(si)e Canvas

NathalieKalbach_HHFragmentiert01

Slowly getting there- but still a lot to do for my exhibition in August. Here is another canvas I created – I had lots of fun doing this one.

NathalieKalbach_HHFragmentiert02

If you have never been to Hamburg you probably do not get all the references and landmarks in the collage – but there are lot’s of them in there :) But even if you do not know all of them- I hope you have fun spotting some details.

NathalieKalbach_HHFragmentiert03

The canvas is 16″ by 24″ big (40cm x 60cm) – I know it looks way smaller here -. Off to work on some more canvases.

Have a wonderful day

P.S. – Thank you for you wonderful comments and sharing your personal thoughts and stories on my post the day before yesterday! Thank YOU!!!

Hugs

Nat

Nat, I think this is one of my all-time favorites of yours! The colors, the collage-i-ness of the illustration, how FULL and VIBRANT the piece is!! Bet it is magnificent in real life at that 16×24″ size!!

It is wonderful to see the inside or the sub-concious at work. I am not a psycho analyst I just see a lot of references to Hamburg a city that you love, a city where you met your love and a city that you cherisheven though you will mouve out of it, paintings, works of arts speak of wo we are. Your paintings are beautiful!

NathalieKalbach_Iamenough01

I played a bit around in my art journal and I love especially how the left page turned out . Sometimes it is good to just play because accidentally you might find a fun new way for a background – like I did :)

NathalieKalbach_Iamenough02

Standup Bass or…New Stencil with Stencil Girl Products

StandUpBass Stencil

New Stencil in the house and it is a 6×6 Standup Bass Stencil :)

NathalieKalbach_StandupBassLife01

One of my favorite things in our household is my husband’s standup bass- I just love that thing  – and I thought it would be a great stencil using it for everything related to music, or lyrics you quote , or layouts with bands, theater, concerts…etc :)

NathalieKalbach_StandupBassLife02

I used the stencil positive and negative at the same spot – meaning I sprayed over the stencil , then flipped it over at another spot to get the access paint onto the page and then took another color and sprayed over it again .

NathalieKalbach_StandupBassLife03

Love the dimension and the layers you build up with this method. Other than that I used Derwent Arbars, Dylusions and Liquitex Spraypaints with the background. The stamps you see are stamps I found at a store around the corner I am so in Love with them.

NathalieKalbach_StandupBassLife04

I hope you like my new stencil. It comes in two different sizes 6×6 and 4×4 inches.

NathalieKalbach_StandupBassLife05

Here is what I used for this art journal page

Have a beautiful and creative day !

This bass so makes me think of some of the music that you’ve had playing in the back ground of some of your tutorials. And nice that it also comes I the smaller 4X4 size. I must find a local store to get these stencils at.

aah, I so love the sound of stand up bass! I could use your stencil for layouts with photos of when I was expecting my son and listened to pieces of music with this instrument all day long. And I looove your typewriter too, I have some in stamps but not in stencils……….for the moment…..

LOVE the double triple use technique. I’ve been ‘printing’ the excess paint on paper for awhile – never thought of doing it on the same project.
