Trust or Bust … or In My Art Journal Today

True, I guess …sometimes it is hard to trust…but what else is left over?

Some texture play in my art journal. I used flexible modeling paste through my Crackle Stencil, let it dry and then applied some Glass Beads here and there.

After the glass beads dried I used Liquitex Spray Paints and sprayed over – sometimes going back in while the paint was still wet and blending some of the colors. I finsihed the spread off with some white ink splatters and the “trust” sticker as well as some writing.

Glow – Mixed Media Painting

I finally finished this painting – I had a good time painting with Inks, Acrylic Paints, Spray Paint and Markers . It has quite some texture created with Heavy Body Paint but also with Natural Sand which is hard to capture on photos and the color choice was first a bit unconventional but then started speaking to me :)

    Wow Nathalie. So much to keep coming back to in this as a viewer I mean. Complex and wonderful. I do like the unusual color choice–it makes me as a viewer want to put a story to it. Bravo!

Color Your City Event – Winsor & Newton Pigment Marker

A couple of weeks ago I was invited to attend an event by Winsor & Newton for the launch of their new Pigment Marker. Since all colorful new art supplies attract me like shiny objects the magpie – I was super excited to go with my friend Kim.

The event took place at the Society of Illustrators in NYC. Several wonderful and well known illustrators were showcased with their work using the new Pigment Markers and even did some life drawing. Will Broome did these adorable figures.

The images below by Thomas Cian were my favorite – I love the collage like effect he draw – sooo cool!

I also loved these by Katie Rodgers – the colors and the beautiful little specks that add some texture <3 – she uses sometimes glitter or gesso or other media on top of the Pigment Marker or Watercolor when she illustrates.

I loved that we were able to play with the new Pigment Markers. Here is Kim giving them a try. She and I totally loved the white and clear blender Pigment Marker which give a huge possibility while drawing – creating nice tints and blending colors together. The talent around us was amazing … you could definitely tell who was there for the food and drinks and who was there for playing and seeing some beautiful illustrations ;)

I will show you soon how I played a bit with my new sets of Pigment Markers even though they are not acrylics (psshhhh don’t tell anyone ;) ) – they are wonderful especially on more glossy paper – think of awesome possibilities with coloring stamped images!

Used to be ….or In My Art Journal Today

For this spread I painted the background with Liquitex Brilliant Yellow Green, Yellow Light Hansa and Brilliant Blue – mixing the colors with a brayer. I then used my Lilly Wallpaper and Batik Stencil with some of the colors in the Background and used the Mish Mesh Stamp with some Titanium White. The image is painted with Liquitex Markers as well as the Journaling. An easy but fun spread – the right amount of work to get the morning creativity flowing.

Inspired by Chicago Architecture

As you might know, a couple of weeks ago, I meet some dear old friends in Chicago and we had a fun weekend. One of the repeated recommendations to do in Chicago had been the Architecture River Cruise and since this is one of the few “touristy” things that even my friend A. who lives in Chicago loves – we were in!

It was pretty pretty awesome! I am interested in architecture but there is a lot of mid century and more modern building where I am a bit at loss as to the initial appeal. Hearing a lot of background motivations and ideas for buildings was a total eyeopener. It started with this building which was in my “love it without much explanation” range. The Wrigley Building built in 1924 shining in it’s white terra cotta facade inspired by Seville’s Cathedral.

333 West Wacker built in 1983 – I love the reflection and the fact that the curved facade is mimicking the curve of the river as well as it’s color. That I can see and it made me kind of like it more :)

Lake Point Tower – 1968 – by John Heinrich and George Schipporeit, two students of Mies van der Rohe. It looks elegant with it’s curves. It probably has the most stunning views in all directions -but I still wouldn’t wanna live there, I think.

Marina City 1967 – by Goldberg (another Mies van der Rohe student) who believed since no right angles exist in nature, none should exist in architecture. I looked at some floor plans of those corncobs and found them super intriguing. Think living in flower petals.

Finished in the 80s is this River City building also by Goldberg. While I found the windows fascinating and they reminded me of some Gaudi buildings in Barcelona – this one looked like a nightmare to live in especially upon coming closer with the boat. I don’t know – but the shapes – intriguing again and inspiring.

After the river tour we walked to The Rookery 1888/1907  – Frank Lloyd Wright – which was unfortunately closed already -but boy did I love all the details on the facade. It contains decorative elements reminiscent of late Roman, Venetian, Moorish and medieval-European architecture

This building is the Chicago Board of Trade – 1930 – a breathtaking art deco building which makes me think of old Chicago Gangster Movies and Gotham City :)

And the famous Chicago Theatre built in 1921.

All in all I felt pretty inspired by the architecture of Chicago – the shapes, patterns, reflections and I am sure some of them will move into future artwork :) Time to get into the studio. I hope you enjoyed the little tour. Have a gorgeous day!

Stroll Through The Hood – October 2015

This golden month was filled yet again with lot’s of bicycle trips. I will for sure miss those little rides in the colder months but let’s see what was inspiring and fun in October!

Bam  – a really cool new mural surfaced near Mana Contemporary done by Shepard Fairey – amazeballs!

And there he was with the mayor and some other peeps early in the morning when we took our bikes to see the mural. We had no idea he was there and that was quite cool …I did not say hi though … I am having art crushes and then get like super shy …and think he probably really doesn’t need a person jumping like a 3 year old telling him “love your stuff, so cool ” hence nothing more intelligent went through my mind at the moment ;)

I am still fascinated by horseshoe crabs – this one is a mini baby horseshoe crab- it was smaller than the palm of my hand.

    I do love your strolls and to see through your camera lens. This time I really enjoyed the beach photoes – there is something about beaches “off season” that I love. I can see the Yoda face when you mention it, but for me it was a Teenage mutant ninja turtle on the Shell …

    First of all, how totally awesome to come across that new Shepard Fairey mural, then to see him there in person…wow!! I would have been completely tongue tied like you…lol. I continue to be completely in love and impressed with street art and would have been swooning at the sight of the artist..ha ha! Thanks for sharing as always!!

    Love your monthly strolls and seeing the murals. I’m certain they so much more impressive in real life! Shepard Fairey is from my hometown (Charleston SC) and he did some beautiful work here back in 2014. And absolutely Yoda!!! You nailed it ?

    Not sure if I would have come up with Yoda on my own, but I do see a face for sure. It continues to amaze me that you have such a view of Lady Liberty and you don’t even live in NYC. Love that first mural and how the brick gives it such a perfect texture (goes along with the strong lady).

    I so enjoy the view through your lens, Nat! Wonderful perspectives, beautiful composition. I MUST take a drive up to see this artsy city you call home! And I enjoyed seeing the horseshoe crabs—-I grew up on the southeastern CT shore and these babies were everywhere! I actually saw Cirious George in yours here! Thanks for starting met Saturday off with a smile.
