Something Real – Art Journal

“I knew I was strong, and maybe like they said, “crazy.” But I had this feeling inside of me that something real was there.” – Charles Bukowski

I built up over an existing background using colorful acrylic paint and gesso and stamped with one of the Fanfare stamps. I’m digging the pops of brighter colors showing through here and there. I used acrylic markers for some mark making.

A great quote from an author I was just reminded of the other day. Maybe time to revisit again since I haven’t since I was a teenager.

And I scratched into the gesso for some more marks, revealing previous layers.

Super Power – Art Journal

What’s your superpower? I’m a woman…

I used my Hexastencil Mixed Media Chip to create the hex pattern and then filled in with the Diamond Hex rubber stamp from the Hex Set Large and the Fairview rubber stamp from the FANtastic Small set.

I had a photo of my Aunt Margot from a party (I had so many from the party and was sorting through them recently – such cool images) and just thought it was a perfect fit for the quote and the hex space. Then I trimmed up one of the Hexastencil chips, and applied it with gel medium.

I’m glad I found a way to incorporate the dear photo, in a meaningful way to keep.

Aunt Margot…how nice to see her again on a page.
I must say that I have always enjoyed your stories about her and the warm memories that it makes me feel for/with you.
Hope you’re enjoying this summer weather Nat!

Adventures Begin – Art Journal

“Adventure must start with running away from home… and may result in finding a new home”

I created my background first by painting in different acrylic colors.

I stamped the cityscape using my Powerhouse, Main Station, and Brownstone stamps from my Stroll Through the Hood 1 and 2 stamp sets. And then I added some oomph with a little more color here and there.

As the background was a bit much for me and didn’t really speak to me, I actually painted everything but the area of the city scape with black gesso and stamped part of it with the Jewett Fan from the Fan-tastic Large rubber stamp set.

My night sky was complete with a few Star Tag stamps and my quote. I’m living this adventure right now :)

The Stencilfied Journal – Prompt 21

My wonderful friend Tina Walker is at it again – she invited several people to join her Stencilfied Prompts. The prompts are music related and each week she is posting a song. You can be inspired by the lyrics, the video, the album cover or anything related and the only restriction is that you have to use StencilGirl Product Stencils. Here is my take on Prompt 21

This week’s prompt was Back in Black by AC/DC – a real rock n roll standard. I thought I would sketch a bit of a dangerous looking girl and use a fiery color palette.

I used my Hamburg stencil for the background with acrylic paint and spray paint.

I sketched the girl using Art Graf Kneaded Graphite – a water soluble putty-like stuff that you can draw with and then reactivate with water. It’s an interesting material to work with that I’m digging right now.

Only Knowledge – Art Journal

“People love talking about themselves. For some people that is their only knowledge.” From my shall remain anonymous assistant :)

I made the background pattern with my Gnarly foam stamp and acrylic paint and the Van Vorst stamp in my Floral Tile Small rubber stamp set with red archival ink. The color scheme and the simplicity of it reminds me of Japanese calligraphy.

I put some chalkboard tape down for the quote and wrote in a white calligraphy pen.

Art Journal Flip Through – 05/2019

I wanted to share a little Flip Through video of my newly finished art journal. I started this one in September 2018.

I keep about 4-5 journals at the same time. This is an art journal I made by hand, from start to finish. It’s something I’ve gotten more into and it’s a fun skill to learn. You can take my online workshop BYO Art Journal and start binding your own unique journals too.

Hope you enjoyed the flip through!

I love looking over your shoulder while you flip through your journal.
How did you film this? Do you put your camera on a tripod and angle it down?

    Loved it Nat!
Be brave enough to let yourself be bad is a hard one for me…really need to let go of the need to do things “right”.

The Stencilfied Journal – Prompt 20

This week’s prompt was Godspeed(Sweet Dreams) by The Dixie Chicks. I haven’t heard this song before and it is definitely not my thing, but that didn’t stop me from creating :)

I tripled up on pattern in the background with my Santa Fe stencil and my Santa Fe and Mini Santa Fe foam stamps. Some areas with spray paint, and some areas with acrylic paint and sponge. I like the play between the different scales.

I collaged in and painted and sketched over a magazine image and pulled in some lyrics with a fude pen. Even though the song wasn’t my type, I really like what I made when I got to work. You never know what will spark your creativity when you begin.

Keep the Rhythm – Art Journal

“I need to be alone for certain periods of time or I violate my own rhythm.” Lee Krasner

So true- while I am a very extrovert person – I also love long stretches of alone time :) For my rhythm of the journal page I used the Midcentury Squared foam stamp with UTEE and then added some acrylic ink on top. Then I used ink to draw the lady .

On the left here i used Watercolor and added it to my foam stamp – Love the look. the Signal foam stamp on the right was stamped with acrylic paint.

A true mixed media page :)

The Stencilfied Journal – Prompt 19

This week’s prompt was Danny’s Song by Loggins and Messina which I had never heard before. It’s a pretty uplifting song about love so I was inspired to make a bright and happy page.

I used my Batik stencil with spray paint – one of my favorite stencils that is an “oldy but a goody.”

I wrote out some of the lyrics with a Fude pen and also added my Far Out and Mid Century Squared foam stamps with watercolor and spray paints.
